A KISS OF MADNESS

Madness - A word defined as the state of insanity. Chaotic frenzy. Crazy.

It doesn’t matter how you define it. It only matters how you perceive it.

I’ve always known things I shouldn’t know. Seen things I shouldn’t see, things no one else sees. But one terrifying vision—and my reaction to it—lands me in Brocker’s Center for the Criminally Insane.
I’m convinced I can make it through my time here unscathed. After all, I’m not crazy. But after spending time with three guys—a schizophrenic with two personalities, a pathological liar who isn’t to be trusted, and a nymphomaniac with a penchant for knives—I’m beginning to doubt my sanity.

Can I separate the real from the mad, or will this place make me spiral further down into the dark recesses of my mind?

Am I crazy?
I’ll let you decide...

*This is a twisted romance novel that’ll leave you questioning if what you’re reading is true, or just a Kiss Of Madness*

**WARNING: This book contains themes and situations some readers may find sensitive including mental illness, assault, and attempted sexual assault.

Oh man... OK. What to start with? This was really a madness trip. In both good and bad ways. But what's most important is that the good way weighted much more than the bad one.

So, the idea is that my thoughts about this book really feel like madness, and I apologize for this, for the way this review is written, but please, try to understand... I had my KISS OF MADNESS. At least for now, I seem to not be able to put the finger on my thoughts. I feel them like things running under my skin. This book, let me wandering myself what did I just read. Is madness really feel like this?

Oh, boy... Guess I'll do this then:
PROS:
1. Some funny scenes placed in the right times, to give you a slight impression of reality, or, sort of.
2. One main steamy scene, which at first I didn't know if I like it or not. Finally, I really enjoy it and saw the purpose of it.
3. Letting you question what is real and what is not, even at the finish.
4. Making you feel the madness like actual things crawling under your skin.
5. Making you feel the madness like things crawling...
6. Making you feel the madness...
7. Or not?!
8. Are you feeling the madness?
CONS:
1. I needed more madness.
2. I wanted more madness.

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
"I was ready to start living. And all it had taken was nearly dying."
I wanted to love this book. It had glowing reviews and as soon as I read the synopsis, I was ecstatic and dying to start reading it. It sounded right up my alley and I wanted something dark that would have me on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, this book just didn't do that for me.

Lydia- While she was an interesting character with an interesting ability, being in her head was disorienting and confusing. I don't know if the authors meant it this way, but she came off very nonsensical and her thought process led her to do some things that I really don't agree with. I felt like she made some stupid decisions that almost got her killed.

Pierce- I liked Pierce, but I felt like his nymphomania wasn't shown enough. Neither was his "penchant for knives". The only ever time him and a knife is brought up is when Lydia sees his tattoo and when they break into Dr. Ferrer's office. I wouldn't exactly call that a penchant for knives. I felt like the synopsis painted him in a light that he certainly was not supposed to be in. He came off as a wanna-be play boy. I did really enjoy his protective side when it came out though.

Mason/Jason- I felt like these two were the most shown. I could clearly tell which was which and their development was more thought out than the other two guys. However, I still felt like I didn't get to see enough of them. The scenes with Mason/Jason felt a little rushed and I feel like there weren't enough of them.

Emmett- I feel like Emmett was the least developed of the guys. He was supposed to be a pathological liar, but he never talked enough to tell any lies. The only time when his lying is even a factor is the first time he talks to Lydia, which she just shrugs off.

What I Liked- I liked the part of the epilogue where we find out that Pierce is a cook, Emmett is a method actor, and Mason and Jason are twins. I thought that that aspect of the story was interesting and well thought out. It was a pleasant surprise.

What I Didn't Like- I knew right away that the guys were a figment of Lydia's imagination. I believe that this obscured my views of them, because I knew they weren't real and I didn't want to connect with them when I knew Lydia would eventually lose them. Also, because I knew this, the "plot twist" at the end was lackluster and I spent the whole book just waiting for it to come out. It didn't shock me at all and actually confused me more than I already was. That epilogue was just awkward and didn't make a lot of sense either. I'm still not sure if the guys recognized Lydia at the end or if they didn't.

Overall, this book just wasn't for me. It had an interesting concept and I feel like if it would have been executed in a different way or maybe written by a different author, the story would have been a lot better.

This definitely had an interesting premise that's for sure and it was that which initially caught my attention here just the uniqueness of the entire situation. This wasn’t a bad book far from it and I did enjoy many aspects of the story. It just also felt very rushed in places as well and also erratic in regards to which direction the unfolding story seemed to want to take.

I just wish there had been more meat and further expansion. I wanted background and context I mean this could have been totally epic. It was also quite transparent in as such that I definitely guessed what was going on and quite early at that. But this still gets points for the twist even if I did pinpoint it and also the fact it does stand out from the crowd due to being set in an insane asylum.

I think honestly for this to work it needed to be much longer and drawn out than it was the guys (Pierce, Mason & Emmett) given more individuality than they were as they did start to merge together in my mind. I also felt that the doctors and orderlies at the insane asylum seemed extremely one-dimensional and also stereotypical.

Overall this definitely had some interesting ideas including the unique setting and the reverse harem aspects of it and also that unconventional finish. But it could also have been so much more than what it was. It’s still worth a read just for the above stated reasons alone and if a sequel was ever written I’d definitely be interested in reading it just to experience where Lydia does go next.

Well that was a bit of a trip. Didn’t figure it out until the end. Spirals out of control quickly. I liked all the guys, although my favourite was Jason. Felt sorry for the MC but I liked the ending. Contains smut, violence, mental illness and whole lot of WTF. Great read.

Really enjoyed this story! It was a page-turner for me and kept me on the edge of my seat and constantly guessing. The twist with the Red Bracelet Man was creepy but totally loved it! It was quite a ride following Lydia through her time in the institution, and how she was descending farther into madness. Just makes you think and wonder how often these kinds of things actually happen. **Shudders** I loved her guys. Really, really loved them. They made me laugh, espeically a certain scene with Mason and Jason. I just wish there had been more time with them. Which brings me to why this is a 4-star and not a 5-star.

Spoilers ahead!

There will be a sequel though! So I’m really excited that we’ll be getting more with Lydia and her guys! I also really love this cover!

This book was interesting. I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong to a certain extent.

I liked Lydia a lot and I was rooting for her to get out of there. I didn't see that ending, I honestly thought that the guys were made up, I knew they weren't in the institution with her, but I never thought that they were real.

As much as I loved knowing they weren't figments of her imagination, I was hoping that one of the guys would have said something to acknowledge that they at least recognized her.

Still, a good read.

Lydia has always seen things. But that doesn't fit into the perfect world her family name requires, so when her visions bleed over into her waking life resulting in a 'scene' she is given the choice, jail time (not acceptable) or a hush-hush stay in a psychiatric facility. Two months and her family will completely pay for the college of her choice. It's really no choice except Brocker’s Center for the Criminally Insane may just strip her of her sanity. The overmedication, the constant bombardment of emotions and visions from the other inmates, the staff members who send out evil vibes; it's all too much. Thank goodness for the three guys; a schizophrenic with two personalities, a pathological liar, and a nymphomaniac, who make her theirs, help keep her grounded, help keep her from falling into the darkness. But do they?

I don't even know what to say! A Kiss of Madness is just that! This is a mindscrew of epic proportions, a trip down the rabbit hole. I've always gotten lost in the idea that there's NO WAY we can truly know reality. Crazy people don't know they are crazy. What if everything we believe to be real is only an illusion? You can only base your existence on your set of facts; surroundings, people, events, but you can't be sure. There's no way to prove anything once you start down that path of thinking. This is complicated even more when the person questioning their existence is intelligent. So this book messed with me BIG TIME! Each page I read, I needed to stop, to question, to doubt. Fantastic!

This story exhibits such contrast. Mental illness, overmedicating, taking advantage of the very patients trusting you for help and protection is unforgivable. In this case, the abuse is extreme, the horrors of your worst nightmare. Yet there is also a sense of ridiculousness and humor throughout. Mysterious Man Bun, Pretty Giant, Sexy Schizo, Snow Angel Sarah, Rob the Chess Licker, Darla the Klepto, Harriet the Remote Hoarder, Red Bracelet Man, and Dr. Terror. Divine Comedy. And amidst the tension, the feeling of impending danger, there is sexual tension on a major level. This is a complex, twisted read. Truly one of the most unique RH's I've ever read. It kept me on edge from the beginning until the final disturbing moment. Now if I don't get more, a follow-up, even just a little bleedover, I can't promise to remain completely sane myself. You two started this, now I need more...

So I can't tell you anything at all that happens in this book. What I can tell you is what I thought about it. This book was EVERYTHING!!! As much as I read I tend to know what's going to happen shortly after I start reading. There's nothing wrong with that and I still enjoy the books. But when a book can keep me guessing ALL THE WAY THROUGH...

This book had me thinking and rethinking everything. Just when I thought I had a small clue of what was going on. BAM, not at all what I thought. Freaking amazing and I loved every second of it.

So there are some points in the book that may hit a sore spot for some people so make sure to take in the warning in the blurb. I didn't find anything that put me off at all. While it is a very twisted romance, there are still those little bits of K.B.'s humor that shine through. Like hello that bar of soap. The nicknames had me cracking up too. I haven't read Stacy enough to pick out her characteristics but that should also tell you how seamlessly these two authors came together to write this book.

All in all, I absolutely devoured this book. These evil women were going to make this a standalone too. Can you believe that? I say NO, we need MORE! So read this book, be prepared to be on the edge the ENTIRE TIME and help me beg these ladies for a little more of this twisted world they took us to.

First off let me say I was a little worried about this book in the beginning, with that being said I am amazed at how much I loved this book! Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Everly have created a dark and crazy world with this first book. Our MC Lydia is a special young lady that has visions and feelings and this gift (yes it's a gift, could be a curse depends on your point of view but this is mine) has an episode at a coffee shop that ends up with her in an asylum for the criminally insane on a short stent that end up being a bit longer. She know with the meds that they are forcing on her that something here isn't right and she's not as crazy as they believe. While locked up she meets 4 very special men who help her cope with the madness. All in all I loved it and can't wait to see what happens next in this series, there is a cliffhanger at the end and I just KNOW that the duo writing aren't going to leave it hanging like this!! Absolutely loved it!

This is my first time reading these two authors together and their writing is flawless together. Sometimes when reading a duo I can sense the break in prose and it takes me out of the book. This isn't the case.

There is so much that I want to say but I can't because it's just a mystery in another mystery.
This book had a certain Hitchcock feel to it as a reader. And I mean that in the best way because he was truly visionary with his "did that just really happen??!!" shocking moments. You know, it's like you're not quite sure if what you're reading is happening or what the writer wants you to think - but it's really not what you're thinking. Hahaha. Get it?
To quote the Princess Bride movie, "I do not think it means what you think it means."

This book is brilliant. Full of mystery, secrets and some pretty 🔥🔥🔥 scenes. Just go read it and prepare for awesomeness.

*WARNING* contains adult situations
Lydia is different. Lydia has visions (I think) about future events, but her very rich, pompous parents think she's crazy. Lydia has particularly real and disturbing vision in public and caused some damaged, so her pompous parents made a deal to put Lydia in the home for the Criminality Insane for 2 months, voluntarily, and her transgression would be forgotten.
This book is not what I was expecting. It's quite different from anything I've read. There many twists in this book, so if you think you've got something all figured out, you probably don't. I read it from cover to cover and still not sure if Lydia is gifted or a bit crazy! I think it takes a talented author to make the reader second guess themselves. If your looking for a great story that's out of the "normal" range, this will fit.

Reality is always changing

This was an interesting boom . It definitely had RH, psychological, romantic, suspenseful feels. It's definitely a book where if you pay close attention you'll constantly have new little revelations and suspicions. For me this book felt like it had a theme of reality being constantly changing & subjective. But I also think this is a book where the less you know when you start it the more you'll enjoy it. So I'm not gonna give a lot of specifics other than there some hot moments, some scary and some questionable ones. I would love to see a novella that have us a glimpse of Lydia's future and shined light on even more of her past. Now I can say the ending wasn't bad it a bad a happy for now vibe. Overall a good book.

Nice Read With a Twist

This book was a would read. I finished it in one day because the plot kept me interested. I figured out one of the secrets of this book in the beginning but that did not deter me from reading. I can say with confidence I glad it didn't just when I thought I knew whatever going on I was hit with a curveball. Truly a wonderful read and a book well with to keep reading to the very end.

This is something you’ll definitely want to pick up and read!

Something about reading this type of book in October is just the right move. Though I thought this was a fine book, I did guess the ending. There was a sentence in the beginning that clued me all the way in. And the ending wasn't bad, it was just not exactly what I wanted it to be. The novel was good otherwise.

(This review will be on my blog All the Ups and Downs soon.)

I love reading books about mental illness, and even more so if they take place inside an asylum. When I saw A Kiss of Madness by K.B. Everly and Stacy Jones, it seemed like the perfect read for me. Unfortunately, I was left very disappointed.

The synopsis for A Kiss of Madness sounded very interesting. It could have been a very interesting book except there's too much going on in the story. Lydia gets sent to Brocker's Center for the Criminally Insane after having a vision and throwing a chair through a window as well as attacking an innocent bystander. She could have chose jail time or to voluntarily commit herself to Brocker's. She chose the latter. While there, she gets feelings about people and doesn't feel like she belongs. She meets three guys who are patients with their own issues. However, she ends up thinking they're hot, and they also think she's hot. The guys all agree to be her boyfriends and end up following her everywhere. When one of the other female patients goes missing, Lydia tries to uncover what really happened putting herself in grave danger. I was confused if A Kiss of Madness was trying to be more of a romance novel, a mystery/crime novel, or a paranormal novel. I got the insane asylum vibe for a few chapters, but soon this book lost its whole mental illness vibe. I felt like the insane asylum setting was just thrown in there to make this book sound more interesting than it actually was. It soon turned more into an erotic novel which made me like the book even less. There was just too much pointless fairly graphic sex for my liking. I feel like all the fairly graphic sex and sexual references really took away from the story. I also didn't like the ending. It just felt too rushed. Actually, the whole story just felt really rushed. I also didn't understand how one character who had a violent past could have such a great job. I won't go into further details because it's a spoiler.

I started out liking Lydia and was on her side for the first few chapters or so. However, I found myself losing the connection I felt with her the more I read. She just came across as being very irresponsible and immature. I didn't really care for Pierce, Emmett, or Mason/Jason either. None of the characters in A Kiss of Madness were fleshed out enough to be likable or believable.

The pacing starts out great in A Kiss of Madness. However, it soon slows down once the sex scenes come into play. Then it slows down and becomes more of a smut novel instead of a decent read. Luckily this is a short read or I would have given up on it when I got to the sex parts.

Trigger warnings for A Kiss of Madness include violence, murder, mental illness, attempted sexual assault, fairly graphic sex scenes, sexual references, and profanities.

Overall, A Kiss of Madness started out great. However, it soon went downhill close to halfway through the book. I feel like this book feels more like a rough draft on what could be a decent read. It just needs a lot more work to be good. Get rid of a lot of the pointless sex scenes and references, bulk up the story and characters a bit, decide on what angle to go with, and give this book some guts! At this time, I would not recommend A Kiss of Madness by K.B. Everly and Stacy Jones.

Title: A Kiss Of Madness
Series: Standalone or not?
Author: K.B. Everly & Stacy Jones
Rating: 3.25 Stars
Cliffhanger:
HEA:
“In my mind, I'd been fighting for my life. In theirs, I was just another mental case having a nervous breakdown.”

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I can definitely say that I enjoyed A Kiss Of Madness and it pulled me right in. I read it fairly quickly which wouldn't have happened if the book wasn't interesting. However, I also didn't feel like it lived up to its full potential.

I loved the idea of the book a lot and was eager to pick it up as soon as I read the blurb. But whilst reading it, it felt a bit rushed and I didn't exactly feel the depth of the bond between Lydia and the guys that Lydia claimed was there.
“Sometimes it was just emotions and sounds. Sometimes it was images that played across my mind like a movie with striking detail.”

The lack of questions being raised was also on the unrealistic side. I understand that some of it might have been due to the given medications and the feelings of isolation and loneliness that Lydia felt strongly, but still....

Overall, I did like the book but definitely did not love it. The ending left me with more unanswered questions, and that is on top of the ones that kept pilling up all throughout the book. I don't know whether it is going to be a standalone or a series, but I can't imagine it not having a continuation due to the many explanations still needed.

This book had me hooked from the beginning, these two authors write exceptional together. I can't wait to see what else they come up with!

The main character, Lydia has rich parents who care more about their money and reputation than her. After having a "melt down" they force her into a mental institution. That is where the story really picks up. Something isn't right with place and you feel the creepiness and darkness along with Lydia. I liked how we found and discovered things out when she did. Within the darkness and wariness of this book, there was humour. Some of the other patients made me laugh out loud and the titles Lydia gave them. My favourite ones were Harriet The Remote Hoarder and Rob The Chest Licker. I could picture them clearly in my head.

After being forced pills, the main character begins to change within herself. She begins to have more outbursts and becomes sensitive to touch and sound, as well as hormone changes. I liked how the more pills she takes the more the reader feels her emptiness and struggles. Due to this, it made me question what was real and what wasn’t as seeing through Lydia eyes wasn’t always how things appears to be; it made me keep guessing what was real and what wasn’t. When she meets her guys, all individual in their own ways: Mysterious Man Bun, Pretty Giant, and Sexy Schizo. I knew something was up. The authors give subtle clues throughout that I had to really look for. I am itching to read book 2. Overall I was pleasantly surprised and loved the psychological element within the book.

A Kiss Of Madness

You're going to need a drink after this book. I cannot even begin to explain how awesome this book is. I completely neglected everything I was supposed to do for the day because I could not put it down. Everytime I thought I had it figured out it was like the Authors thought let's take a left then a right circle around then throw them off this cliff lol. It's like watching a thriller and being on the edge of your seat the whole time. This book is a must read, must buy, one click of pure adrenaline. It's exciting, it's sexy, and all consuming. A kiss of madness will leave you feeling crazy and emotional in the best way. You will literally be asking yourself WTF...

A Kiss Of Madness Kindle Edition
by Stacy Jones (Author), K.B. Everly (Author)

I borrowed this book via the Kindle Unlimited program. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.

One part Wes Craven and two parts Hitchcock, A Kiss Of Madness is a psychological horror story wrapped in a Reverse Harem Romance jacket.

Told entirely from the unreliable viewpoint of Lydia, the story unfolds. After a moment of weakness and an act of violence, Lydia is given a plea deal that places her in a hospital for the criminally insane.
There, she has to fight for every ounce of sanity she can keep. She has visions of the future and sometimes, the present. Faced with a mystery that she needs to solve to save her sanity... and her life, she relies on three patients, three men. A pathological liar, the two personalities of a man with MPD and a nymphomaniac who likes knives.

The story is well laid out, with breadcrumbs that are fairly well hidden. The men don't really get much opportunity to evolve. They appear for some smexy time and a few scenes. The story is mostly about Lydia and the mystery she needs to solve.

The authors' world-building of the hospital is disturbing, claustrophobic and haunting. The side-characters are not filled in, they are more sketches of people. But that fits with the story-telling of the unreliable Lydia.

The ending, an attempt at a big twist, isn't great because it is the oldest one in the book, literally.

Unfortunately, we leave the story when we could happily have another book. This is a stand-alone that is heavy on the triggers.

Wonderfully Twisted

This is a very complex, twisted read. It is definitely the a unique RH novel- thus the 5stars. I felt I was hanging on every word from start to finish.. and oh what a twist.

Our clairvoyant MC and embarrassment of a rich daughter, Lydia Bloom, after an hysterical breakdown in a cafe, is forced to choose between jail time and 2 months of therapy in a mental institution. Who wants jail time? What's an easy 2 months that can get her snobbish parents away from her?
This story is so believable. The authors didn't overexaggerate mental illness but they didn't shy away from some of the ugly truths either. The monotony and routine of being institutionalized, the emabarrasment of having to do things supervised, the other patients afflictions- Rob the Chess Licker, Darla the Klepto, Harriet the Remote Hoarder- everything was so well written and detailed that you felt you were there.

Now enters Mysterious Man Bun, Pretty Giant, Sexy Schizo. Love the names by the way. They help her manage through her darkest times. They were so uniquely well developed for not playing uber major roles. They did not detract from the MC but helped define her character.

This book will have you start questioning if this is really happening or all a hallucination? The danger and creep factor increase so steadily that you don't even realize it until wham... climax. You start to question and doubt your own sanity. What did I just read, what just happened? The authors need to give me closure to this madness, because I cannot take not getting to see more of the guys with Lydia. We are all mad here!
