Creative Career Coaching: Theory into Practice

Rate this book
Creative Career Theory into Practice is an innovative book for career development students and professionals aiming to creatively progress their coaching practice. Without losing sight of fundamental coaching values and practices, it encourages career development professionals to adapt their practice by harnessing imagination, intuition and critical reflection to engage clients.

Hambly and Bomford consider the usefulness of creativity alongside traditional coaching models to reach "harder to help" groups. They consider a whole-brain approach to creativity, emphasising the need for coaches to adapt their client-facing skills for individual cases. They work through how clients make career decisions, how to use labour market information to motivate clients, how to frame a creative coaching session using techniques such as metaphor, visualisation and role play, how to use practical tools and techniques to resolve a client’s individual needs, and how to deliver on digital platforms. Combining the latest neuroscientific research with activities, summaries and case studies, this book provides a practical, skills-based approach to coaching.

Creative Career Theory into Practice is the first book to summarise the Creative Career Coaching Model. It will be an indispensable resource for students of career development, career coaching, coaching psychology and advice and guidance courses. It will also be of interest to career coaches in practice seeking to enhance their skills.

I have been a careers practitioner for fifteen years and am now involved in training both new and experienced careers coaches and advisers. I was therefore curious to read Creative Career Coaching to gauge whether it would be a useful textbook for staff in my organisation.
Having read the book, I consider it to be one to return to again and again. Experienced careers practitioners will find that regularly dipping into this book will be invaluable for refreshing their ideas and prompting new techniques. Those who are new to the role will find the discussion of theories eminently readable and easy to understand. Throughout the book there are well-chosen examples and activities to aid understanding and make it easy to digest new concepts.
The book is attractively presented with easily-digested, well-written chunks of text, case studies which ground the book in reality, and illustrations which help to clarify ideas. I particularly liked the way the Creative Career Coaching Model is considered from the viewpoint of both the coach and the client, and the final chapter in which the coach is encouraged to build their own resilience.
The detailed guidance for each stage of the model will be essential reading both for beginners and experienced coaches seeking to reflect and improve their practice. With a wide variety of practical ideas for coaches to make their practice more dynamic and impactful, this book is sure to become a definitive guide.

I discovered this book in the University library and after reading just a few pages I had to buy it. What I like about this book is that it covers all the theoretical basics in a very concise and easy to read manner. I found many scientific explanations to questions that I wondered about such as the use of personality tests, happenstance.

This book lays the foundations for me as a career coach practitioner and will strengthen my career coaching programs. I recommend this book to every career regardless of their experience, as it is packed with knowledge and best practices. Many thanks to the authors for such an amazing work.
