MAGIC IS DYING; CAN I SAVE IT? IF THE PRICE IS MY HAPPINESS; CAN I PAY IT?
In the last few generations, only one in a hundred female witches are born with power. So when I came into mine, my grandmother helped me hide it so I wouldn't be swept away by the ISC, our magical government.
The price of discovery was steep; becoming an ISC drone and being paired with their choice of mate for my coven. So I hid in plain sight working days at Maggie's Pet Wash, and nights piecing together the mythical Words of Power.
The only thought that keeps me going is figuring out a way to beat the ISC and hopefully fall in love with a coven of my own... maybe even raise a few little witchlings.
So when my familiar, a pug named Mrs. Pig, screws up my one shot at obtaining the Words of Power, I figure everything is ruined. That is until Pierce, Sam, and their own talking dogs walk into my life. Now that I have them, can I give them up? Even to save magic?
The ISC is coming for me. What they don't know I'M COMING FOR THEM, TOO.
( This is the beginning of an RH series. Which means our sassy heroine may not get all the guys just yet, but be patient!)
Omg! Ann Swan is amazing! She wrote a character who is totally is unique and wonderful! It had a great story, sexy characters and made me laugh and cry for them. Loved it completely!
This is a great example of a well written erotic novel. Many authors fail to find the balance between great storylines and hot hot hot sex scenes. Ms. Swan has succeeded. I was actually invested in the plot of the main story being told, and her telling of it included wittiness and real ness. The sex scenes aren’t as graphic as some in the genre, but still well done considering the extra element of magic that occurs between the covenmates. The relationship between the three felt genuine. I hate when authors turn ménage into two (or more) separate M/F relationships.....they are all living together and sharing certain intimacies would be natural (bonding outside of the sex between ALL members of the relationship).
As a first time author Ann Swan nailed it. What’s not too love a witch in hiding, talking dogs and even hotter guys. Maggie is a confidant women who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid of fighting for it. You guys won’t be disappointed. I’m looking forward to book 2.
This is a delightful read with witchcraft, love, intrigue and pugs. Maggie is a sheltered woman with great spirit who is coming into her own. With the help if Pierce and Sam, Maggie finds her life getting more interesting and the world she lives in much different than she imagined. And of course, Mrs. Pig is there to support them all.
Covened is the debut novel of Ann Swan. Her first novel reads like she has been writing for years. In Covened, our FMC is a quirky, normal sized, funny witch. Hiding her magic from those in power, she works to undermine them. By a turn of fate(or rather at the prodding of her goddess) her life changes and takes a path she never thought would be possible. With her covened mates and their quirky pets at her side, maybe her fate is rather different than the one she prepared for. The world building was pretty cool. Pretty much our world, but with extra really cool stuff added on top. Things are well described but not overly wordy. The rules make sense and are pretty easy to follow. The editing was well done. I didn't notice any issues while reading through though I did not specifically look for them either. Still I didn't have anything draw me out of the story. The continuity was well done. No errors with name changes, descriptions, powers, etc. The characters were probably the best part. Maggie is our FMC and who we spend the most time with. She's an average sized woman with some curves and she's pretty funny. She's not a superhero or karate guru. While she does have some skills, she's also a bit clumsy and pretty normal. Kind of like your funny and cute friend. It makes her more relatable. Her guys, Pierce and Sam, are pretty different but both are great. I loved the dogs. The dialogue is normal sounding. No weird timing or word vomiting. Just dialogue that you could actually hear(if the world was full of magic). The plot is fairly straightforward. There are a few twists and turns thrown in, but it's not an overly complex plotline that's going to need charts to keep up with. Now, that's not saying this is a simple book for a three year old. It just means that you aren't reading about four or five different plots all happening at once. Since we follow Maggie, we are seeing what her life and plans are. I have some hope that in book 2 my theory will come to be, but we shall have to see. The ending was a nice place to end the book. Obviously being that it's a series, we end with some things still left up in the air, but enough things were resolved that you won't feel cheated when it ends. No huge cliffhanger, just a nice break. Overall, I would recommend this book. I am looking forward to book two!
Maggie is on her own as a witch in hiding. She’s a BBW who has spent her life searching for the original language and the ‘Words of Power’. Maggie was raised by her mother and grandmother until her mother disappeared/died when she was a child. Then it was all Mama Jo (her grandmother). They hid her magic so that the alleged bad guys (the ISC) wouldn’t come get her like they did her mom. After Mama Jo passes away Maggie travels all over the world searching for information on these things hoping to fight the ISC. Then she joins a terrorist group that is also fighting the ISC and becomes a terrorist herself.
Ok, I read the reviews for this before getting it in Kindle Unlimited. They were all really good so I was hoping for a good read. The first half was entertaining to say the least. Maggie is a little weird, very quirky and funny. She also spends a lot of time feeling bad about herself and doubting what she can do. Then Pierce enters the story with his dog. They have great chemistry and eventually start a relationship of sorts. Eventually Pierce brings home Sam who immediately joins in.
Keep in mind that this is Ms. Swan’s debut novel and there is a lot of world building here. Now, the Terrorist group she joined she doesn’t actually consider a terrorist group, but she’s as afraid of them as she is of the ISC. Was this book written perfectly? No, there were a few spelling and grammatical errors, but not enough to make me stop reading.
Now, when I see ‘Reverse Harem’ in a description or title I expect it to be (F, M, M, M) at least. At its best this was a Ménage à trios story. Also, other than some sex in the first half, there wasn’t much of it later on. It was insta love which I can live with, but Pierce and Sam weren’t very well developed characters. After Sam was introduced to the story it then plodded along. It became slow, but the story kept me reading.
Finally, I read series all the time. I love reading them. I saw the title and figured it was a series too. No it isn’t. This is a SERIAL. I was so angry at the end of the book I couldn’t sleep! This felt like when you read a romance and the heroine meets the love of her life and you expect a happy ending only to get to the end of the book and the hero is killed off. Disappointing and annoying at best.
What can I say other than this first time author blew it out of the water? A witch in hiding, a few yummy men, and, lest we forget, talking dogs. I kinda want a Mrs. Pig of my own. Pug Life, people! Oh! Yeah! I almost didn’t mention the crooked governing witch council as the bad guys! This was just... everything one could hope for in a RH story. Funny, sexy, dirty (insert eyebrow waggle here), and just really well written. And that ending?!?! I did NOT see that coming.... So... Ann.... about book 2....
I read the other reviews before reading this book and really expected so much. The only thing that I can figure is that she must have a lot of friends who left all those 5 star reviews? So, what I did like. It was an interesting storyline, (original and unique). It was also edited really well. The dog on the cover was cute.
My issues. The cover was weird. Why was her hand in her mouth? I'm not sure about such a big lady on the cover (I overlooked that because the reviews were so good though). *I'm not a small lady so I'm not against plus sized women* just not sure if I like them on the cover after reading about the female character. She was portrayed as rude, fat, spoiled, lazy, and immature (it even describes huge amounts that she eats, how she doesn't exercise, and doesn't clean up). If things didn't go her way it was never her fault. The few times she was actually nice I wasn't really impressed because she had already been such a jerk. I didn't like how she treated the men. It seemed that she was so into the first man (as long as she got her way) until the second man showed up. Once he was in the story she started treating the first man badly. When she wasn't treating him badly or thinking bad things about him, she was making fun of him. I did not like that. The men didn't seem like they were very masculine because of the way the female treated them. It really didn't work. I secretly hoped they would just leave, they didn't deserve the treatment. Also, she worked for a discreet organization as a spy/buyer of rare items, wouldn't that mean that her people skills were better. They would have to be in order to do something like that. So I could only gather from that that she was smart but mature only when she wanted to be or it benefitted her.
A lot of work was put into describing so many things, it was a little overkill in places. All in all, the story had/has potential, it was interesting. I don't understand how it could have not been pointed out by an editor, proofreader, or whoever helped with the book that the female main character was so unlikeable? Those were traits that people don't like in real life much less in a book. I will read the next book just to see what happens.
I read Covened: Mrs. Pig and the Words of Power during its earlier stages, and I am happy to say that the additional content has updated my rating. The story is well written, funny, and keeps you engaged with characters who will make you fall in love.
At a time where magic is dying, Maggie has no choice but to hide her powers. If found, the ISC will force her to work for them and choose her coven. During a fated encounter she meets Pierce and Pugsworth. For the first time, she feels like she can trust someone. Her pug, Mrs. Pig, wants them to stay a while and thanks to a spell gone awry, that's what happens, but is only the beginning. Convened is an adult Reverse Harem of discovery, that sets Maggie's world in to a tail-spin and an ending that sets us up for book 2, Cursed.
Covened is the debut novel of the author which follows the story of Maggie, a witch in hiding and some sort of spy/ rebel against their magical government, ISC. Although she never knew her father and abandoned at a very young age by her mother, she was taken care of and trained by her grandmother, Mama Jo. After her grandma's demise, she turned her focus to finding out the mystery of the dwindling number of female witches and their disappearances. With a spell gone wrong, talking pugs and desperately trying to translate an old text, she will need all the help she can get from her covened mates and an old flame if she wants to see everything through. Will she have enough time to solve these things with the looming exposure from ISC and possibly a threat to her unsanctioned covening?
First off, I loved that in this book it featured a big sized girl. It isn't everyday I read an FMC that features this kind. Major props to the author for putting this out there. The FMC's character is quirky, funny with a bleeding heart for the unfortunates. I feel sad and angry for what happened with her long lost sister. The guys character were believable and for once, not the usual alpha male you read but there was never any doubt that they will fight for our heroine. The storyline and writing is spot on and entertaining. Who wouldn't love a talking pug?
I will definitely keep on reading the series and curious to see what will happen next with that ending of book 1.
Man, this book has a whole lot of good in it. I love Piggers, and the other pups. Gotta love the men, and the main character is the best kind of hot mess around....but probably one of my favorite things about this is that despite ups and downs, their arguments and misunderstandings were reasonable. Above all, this is a story about people coming together and refusing to stop trusting or loving one another, even for the cheapness of a drama plot twist. Instead, the big bad thing that happens is external, and when we leave our heroes they are, assumedly, still in love and still trusting one another. I worry for their futures but I’m also really ready for Mags to kick all the butts.
This doesn’t end in a happily ever after, or even a happily for now....but it also doesn’t really end on a cliffhanger, either. Which I can appreciate. And which makes me hungry for more, but not anxious about it.
Also, there are lots of panic attacks in this book and I swear that every single one of them had me crying because they’re so real. Which I appreciate. It’s a weird thing to approve of but what can I say, this book had me hooked from the jar of peanut butter....there’s a lot of weird and you’d better love it or just get out.
Incomplete series with cliffhanger. Lost a star for the cliffhanger.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I've been looking forward to reading this book so much. Finally I got my grubby little hands on it and it was totally worth the wait.
This book had me giggeling/snorting through the whole book. I could totally follow the #BigGirlProblems and having once been a pug owner I could appreciate Mrs. Pig and her brand of love/craziness. Throw in some hot dudes, magic and enough intrigue to choke a cow and you have a 5 star book. Now I just have to survive until Cursed comes out.
I really look forward to the next book in the series. This debut author does not disappoint.
Favourite quotes:
A stampede of footsteps came pounding up, accompanied by the yodeling howls of two very excited pugs. They loved drama like blonde haired sorority sisters.
Mrs. Pig and Pugsworth bounced around reenacting what was either the Battle of Gettysburg or an episode of the Kardashians.
I. Love. This. Book. I liked the setup, a girl and his guys, this has to be good, right? But it's not just the usual setup with gorgeous man and an extremely beautiful lady, no. This is something real. Relatable. Humanly. And that is why the story sucked me in from the first letter. Ohh... And Maggie - who is a badass hottie - has a pug as familiar. I love it! The story starts with a very funny scene - well with a series of funny scenes - and that is when we meet Pierce and his dog already who are really adorable. The whole story is full with excitement and emotions, and twists too, so you definitely won't be bore while reading. If I haven't convinced you, add the gorgeous cover on top. I want to read further already!
😩*big over dramatic sigh with thrown arms and all* So I’m obviously broken. I’ve read too many books and addled my brain. Here we had an exquisitely written book with fur babies and a big be-boobied heroine, I mean this book used me as its template (😉) I should love it but I didn’t it and I don’t know why. Sassy mouthed heroines are my cup of tea, and a thoroughly thought out and planned world I should be forking panting after this beauty like I do Nutella 🤤 mmm Nutella. Sorry side tracked, so I’m putting myself in timeout until I can straighten myself out, and no Nutella! But if you like a fast paced, fast burn Rh with a sassy Mc (and her owner wasn’t too bad either) then I definitely recommend this book.
I laughed, I cried, and most definitely craved cupcakes while reading this. I might have even flipped a table when I discovered I was out of words. There only thing you need to know about this book is... It's addictive. Much like all those cupcakes I am now dreaming of.
Maggie is a beautiful, delightful REAL character that dosnt apologize for being so. Pierce and Sam are the perfect balance - I never would have thought I would have a hard time choosing a team but Ann made #whychoose a worthy option.
The plot is solid, the characters are loveable and well balanced and Ann does not short us on the LOLs. Mrs. Pigs is by far my favorite character which is saying something.
5/5 hands down best book I've read in a long damn time.
This book was chalk full of goodness. For starters it was hilarious and in a very natural way. The humor wasn't overdone or forced it was just right. And I loved the dogs and I've always wondered what my dogs would say if they could talk so that was definitely a favorite part. I loved how the love in this story wasn't one dimensional. It was like a web of connections with a variety of kinds of love and it really portrayed how love can vary and spread but it remains strong and true. This romantic relationship was truly a no closed doors, everyone loves everyone, no jealousy or allotted times anywhere in site and I loved it. None of the characters shied away from this big kind of love and their relationship felt so natural and beautiful. And the hotness between these characters was just right, with just enough sexiness but not so much it became the only focus. And I'll give it to this author while I was able to guess one or 2 things that happened plenty of the rest kept me on my toes. And I have some thoughts on what or who might be in the future and I'm dying to see what's next. And the ending there are no words. It was exciting but it did leave some things hanging and I did not see it coming. So while I can say it wasn't a world ending or soul crushing ending it also wasn't puppies & rainbows but it was acceptable for now. I would definitely love to see more of Oliver and even Dagger maybe and definitely the dogs. So overall a different take on witches and their world while still being a paranormal reverse harem romance where love knows no bounds, laughter is abundant and the suspense is everywhere. This was a very good book and I can't wait to see where these characters go from here, would definitely recommend.
PS- I loved that Maggie was basically your average curvy girl who worked to her strengths and tried to be better without completely changing herself and that she wasn't a big girl who magically or perfectly had all the right answers or abilities. Because it definitely made her more relatable and believable or just enough of those.
If you are looking for a new twist on the story of good vs evil with a lot of heat and some cute dogs then this is your story. Ann Swan does an amazing job of wordsmithing a fabulous story filled with love, loss, betrayal, humor, and some major heat.
Maggie knows it is in her destiny to keep magic from dying out. With the help of her mates and their dogs she will do whatever it takes to keep them safe and break the bonds holding magic captive.
I am excited to reas the rest of this series to find out what happens next.
There is a lot of things I loved about this book. The talking dogs, OMG so cute!! Sam, Pierce and Maggie are not your typical MC's. They are not "perfect" and I loved them all the more because of it. Sexy time scenes were very hot but realistic. I loved the humor! I loved how Maggie was sassy and confident but real! I even liked the cliffhanger, what a great place to leave off! Can't wait to read the next book!
I really liked Maggie. She is quirky, funny, and I love her dos. I need a Mrs. Pig. In addition, she has a couple hot guys. She has been hiding that she is a witch, but suddenly finds herself covened (I.e. mated) and all sorts of new and dangerous things are happening. The story started a little slow, but picks up speed and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I’m looking forward to seeing where this series goes :)
Fantastic read, well written with a great plot and characters. I was engrossed from start to finish. Ann Swan's debut novel is a page turner, I couldn't put it down! This book has magic, intrigue, love, humor, sexy men. It is Maggie's destiny to save magic. Pierce and Sam and their talking dogs definitely make her life more interesting. Maggie also has has Mrs. Pig her talking pug for support. I didn't see that ending coming either! I can't wait to read the next book!
When I first started this series , I was unsure if I liked it. Then I began to connect with the characters. Maggie is a big girl , who is full of life and magic. Mrs.pig is the perfect familiar for her. Her coven mates add the hotness. This story has humor, mystery, magic and love. It ends in a cliffhanger. I loved this book and I am excited to see how Maggie gets out of the mess she finds herself in.
I love this book and can't wait to read more. The fmc, Maggie makes me proud to be full figured woman. A lot of romance novels say BBW but then the female main character is doing shit, no big woman would ever do, but NOT this one. This is the first time out of 100s of books I have read that I felt like the characters are real people. Deserves more than 5 stars
Maggie was a down to earth, fun loving character. I love the way Ann Swan writes, with a bit of blunt humor and so much sass. The men were sexy and sweet and I can’t want to see how they develop and grow as the story progresses. The dogs really stole the show, they were beyond hilarious and adorable. This was a great read!
Ann Swan blew me away with her debut novel. Her nuanced language and intricate plot kept me turning the pages. This book is fun, sexy and absolutely breathtaking. The main character, Maggie, is beautifully written and so funny. Also... can we mention the talking pugs? I need one. This is an author to follow. Loved it!
Omg! New to me author and she knocked my socks off! I was not prepared for the hilarity that ensues in this book. I have so much love for these characters and their sassy animals I just can't even. The plot was amazeballs, the sexy times were smoking and I am hooked!
Okay, the reason I gave this such a low rating is because there is no second book. It's been 5 years since it was written but no other book in sight. Oh it definitely is a cliffhanger too. I liked it, cute and a little steamy but I wouldn't say spicy. I'd really like to find out if Oliver is to be a part of the coven.
