The official prequel and origin story of the bestselling Extinction Cycle series.
One Marine's End Is The Beginning Of Our Extinction ...
For a dozen years, villagers along the ancient Da River in Vietnam have feared a nightmarish creature who hunts and consumes human flesh. Only in whispers do they mention its name, The White Ghost.
To the United States military, this creature has a different name--Marine Lieutenant Trevor Brett, the chemically engineered experiment gone wrong that they will do anything to hide. Sole survivor of his platoon, Brett has stalked the jungle for prey for over a decade. But the men who made him into a monster are searching for him, and when they find him, the line between hunter and hunted will be blurred.
*Please note* Extinction Red Line is a former kindle world story written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Tom Abrahams. The original story has been expanded and now features new chapters and is available for the first time ever in paperback and audio (narrated by Bronson Pinchot). It is also available to readers in other countries for the first time.
Nicholas Sansbury Smith is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than forty novels with two million copies sold. Before his writing career, he served at Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, a background that inspired many of his story concepts. A two time Ironman triathlete, he enjoys running, biking, and hiking. Nicholas also loves traveling, especially to his cabin in Northern Minnesota where he weaves his tales. He lives in Iowa with his wonderful wife and their son and daughter.
Note: Nicholas is no longer an active user on Goodreads and does not use the platform. If you want to connect with him on social media here are some links. He would love to hear from you.
This is the prequel to ‘The Extinction Cycle’ and the origin story of the Da River beast that hunts humans and eats them. It’s not surprising that it all starts with a chemical that will enhance the fighting powers of American soldiers in Vietnam. It is what it is and it doesn’t try to be anything else— pure entertainment. Five stars from me. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t deserve those stars on the basis of being ‘great’ literature, but I don’t care. I will be devouring the rest of the series over the year.
What do you get when you combine two of my favorite post-apocalyptic authors in one book? Brutal and Awesome. Oh wait, you didn’t want how I would describe Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Tom Abrahams as people? Kidding, of course, this story is both. It’s brutal, like, had me almost pausing it numerous times when the VX-99 soldier was feeding. But, it’s also awesome. Abrahams wrote the original story and NSS added and rewrote some of it with him and you can tell that they have honed in on what makes both the Extinction Cycle Series great and this book so damn enjoyable.
This was one of those books that felt comfortable. Not because nothing happens (because it’s quite the opposite) but because it’s in a world liked and it was written by two people whose work I’m intimately familiar with. It’s like going back to your hometown and still knowing where to get the best pizza or cheapest drinks.
Red Line takes place over two distinct timelines one during the Vietnam war and another in 1980. It also takes place in a few different places. The majority are in a secret bunker in USAMRIID (thank you, thank you, thank you for having Pinchot say the nickname of this place right, that instantly makes me want to put a book down when it’s spelled out instead of said “you-Sam-rid”) and in the jungles of Vietnam. Both the timeline and the location switches were needed and were perfectly crafted to make you feel like a switch was needed instead of feeling like a plinko ball on the way down the board with time and place changes.
I thought that the characters were all well written and thought out allowing you to be scared, feel joy/relief, or even grieve with and for them.
As I said in my intro above, this story was awesome. And that isn’t hyperbole. I was, numerous times, filled with awe as I read Red Line. It was one of those how close to the edge can I get without throwing people over kind of books.
The ending (while not spoiling or giving away anything into the full series) ended in a way that shocked me a bit and allowed immense closure to a book (almost in a standalone way which is rare for a prequel) but also draws you in closer, making the series that much more interesting.
Take everything I said above and throw in the narration by Bronson Pinchot, who did the rest of the Extinction Cycle books and you have an absolute winner. What a book. Damn good fiction. Fiction with and edge… where you feel like you need a drink after you finish a chapter.
The only thing that makes me sad about this is that I want more books where Arbrahams and Smith work together and I’m not sure if there are any more (in EC or outside of that world) in the cards. I sure hope so because they are a powerhouse together.
This novel is a prequel to the Extinction Cycle series. It's poorly written. Every dialogue is either snarled, or exploded, or stammered. Every character who has a nickname has the nickname explained in the exposition. That kind of thing is so much better when it just comes up naturally in terms of show, don't tell. This book is a telling masterpiece. I don't recommend this book.
This prequel takes the reader back to the beginnings and the whys of the EXTINCTION CYCLE series by author Nick Smith.
It starts off in 1968 during the Vietnam War in the jungles of Vietnam with a group of Marines who are lied to about an experimental drug VX-99 they are told to give themselves.
This is an excellent start to the series as it tells of the changes in Marine Lieutenant Trevor Brett and is told mostly from his point-of-view. It ties up a lot of the loose ends of the outstanding series.
This is a great collaboration between post-apocalyptic authors Nick Smith and Tom Abrahams.
This book was riveting. I love Nicholas Sansbury Smith's books. He has an exceptional mind and imagination. I have read all of his books. Tom Abrahams is also an exceptional author. More please.
This was a much better story than I was expecting. This is my first book in my foray into The Extinction Cycle and I liked it very much. Not knowing much about the Erie’s except that it is apocalyptic, I was expecting zombies and such. Instead we have a soldier, a victim of his superior’s attempt to create a super-soldier, being given a hypodermic with a lethal cocktail that turns him into “something” else. Once it is known that he survived the experiment, the story details efforts to catch him. Quite a gripping story, though not much character development.
Well, that was officially it for the Extinction Cycle series. I’ve read all the books. I can easily say this is one of my favorite series ever. However, I can’t say I enjoyed this one as much as the others in the series. It was still really good, and I still really enjoyed it, but it just didn’t have that same feeling that the others did. I ultimately think that’s because this is a prequel and I had already read all the books in the series before this one came out. And, if you’ve read the series before the prequel, then you already ultimately know what’s going to happen in this one. I think if you’ve never ready this series before that it would beneficial to read this one first before moving into the larger story arc.
That Ma Tra...... Oh shit! I almost said its name aloud! What a scary MF! A military experiment goes horrifically wrong and it took them a dozen years to finally realize that one survived?! As we used to say in the military, that's a major FUBAR! I was conflicted about this beast, I mean Lieutenant Trevor Brett. I sympathized of what he became and at the same time hated him for the terror and death he brought to the innocents along his trails of carnage. Great read though.
I have been waiting for this book!!! Initially released as a Kindle World book, it has been expanded and is finally available for people outside the US.
If you've read the Extinction Cycle books, you will be familiar with Marine Lieutenant Trevor Brett. The first book in the series, Extinction Horizon, starts with seeing Brett take an experimental drug that is supposed to make them Super Soldiers, but it does something no one expected and creates a monster! Extinction Red Line is Brett's story and a back story to how VX-99 came to be.
This first takes place when Brett and his team is sent to a village in Vietnam suspected of Vietcong activity. They are given the drug and upon using it, they change. Brett is the only one left and enters the Jungle. Years of tales about a White Ghost plague the region and a Journalist takes up the story. He heads to the jungle in hopes of getting the full story and possibly a picture. What he doesn't realise is that nobody who sees the White Ghost is left alive. When the military see the story they realise that this has to be contained as nobody knows about the experiment gone wrong. They send a team into the jungle to find Brett, but Brett is a top predator now and isn't easy to find!
I have to applaud the authors! Not many times have I read a book that has left me as speechless as this one did. This book was phenomenal!!!! The fact that they make you root for a monster speaks volumes for their writing ability. Brett is a monster, plain and simple, but you can't help but love his character. His strength of character was amazing and the battle within himself was brilliantly written. I felt so sorry for him.
The plot is extremely fast paced and intense, I mean edge of your seat, can't put down, intense!! I didn't just read this, I devoured it and immediately started listening to the first book, Extinction Horizon, again. It just cemented the fact that this series is amazing. I highly, highly recommend you read these books!!!
Bronson Pinchot is amazing. It boggles my mind with how many different voices he can do!! It's almost like listening to a full cast reading it. I also love that he puts emotion behind his performance, which in turn brings the atmosphere alive. Brilliant reading of a phenomenal book.
I didn't get a chance to read the original Red Line. Now I'm able to get the story that begins the Extinction Cycle series. Details are filled in, characters are fleshed out, riddles were answered. This is the story that is needed.
Marine Lt. Trevor Brett and his squad are ordered on a routine mission to observe a village suspected of Vietcong activity. The difference with this mission involved a concoction named VX-99. They were to approach the village and inject VX-99 into their veins to mitigate the effects of Agent Orange.
They realised they'd been lied to when their veins coursed with fire and waves of excruciating pain wracked their bodies, changing them into monsters with an overwhelming urge to consume flesh. In addition to the population of the village, Lt. Brett's platoon killed each other. Only Lt. Brett and one other's bodies could not be identified. Years later rumors surfaced about a white ghost, the Ma Trang, killing villagers, mutilating and consuming body parts. Its ghastly depredations drew a bloody red line on the map of Vietnam.
Amazing story, gruesome characters, this terrific story displays the skills of both authors and is the perfect entry point for the series! This is from the Kindle Unlimited program and I truly appreciate the entrance to fantastic adventures possible through KU, but I'm going to buy the e-book as soon as I can.
Killer story that reveals the begining of the end time!
Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Tom Abrahams are two brilliant authors who own this genre! Extinction Red Line is an imaginative backstory of how mankind became doomed! This book develops realistic science to explain the VX99 agent. This is the first time that the mutation sequence made sense to me! The heart wrenching story of LT Brett, the original variant and his fate to become the not so mythical White Ghost! The Marine is cast as victim of a military biological experiment gone horribly wrong. His hideous torment destined to consume his life, yet he still has some intelligence behind his transformation! A thrilling page turner I read in one sitting. I had to know what happened, as each plotline played out through the book! A grand novel! This is as good as it gets in post apocalyptic sci fi genre! You really need to read this incredible addition the the richly textured landscape of the Extinction series!
What happens when you get two authors writing with the same goal in mind. To put out one hell of a read..I tell you what you get .. a badass read. The detail is not wanting , so the horror you feel for Brett is real , the betrayal is real, and the story feels real. Both authors really pulled it the stops on this book..and now we all know how The Extinction Cycle begins..and the tone is set for the whole series..and the tone is Awesomeness.. I have read every book in the series at least three times and they get better every single time..They are so good that I own the paperback, hardback, kindle, and audio versions. When a book or series is this good, a true reader must absorb every feasible way to enjoy them..and .. I have and will continue too enjoy them..and if you love this genre , don’t hesitate , don’t think about it .. Read it ..and you will understand..
Absolutely love the Extinction books. I was pleasantly surprised to see the announcement of the prequel of this series. Waited impatiently for it's release. This is a story about Lt. Trevor Brett's a Marine who was given a drug to become a super soldier. What a tale Abrahams and Smith has spun.
Super exciting thriller. When you finish enjoy the rest of the story.
Fav quotes....because the words are so powerful. “You,” snarled Brett. “You did this to me.”.... Gibson felt the thick, hard beat of his heart in his chest, neck, and temples. He tried not to look away from the beast. He knew from his studies of predators that he could not show any weakness. “What you did to me is nothing…” Brett hissed, his voice full of gravel...... “What you did to me is nothing…compared to what I will do to you.”
A MAJOR MUST READ BEFORE BEGINNING ONE AWESOME KICKASS SERIES!!!!
I read this book when it was previously published in Amazon’s Extinction Cycle Kindle World and I love that Nicholas Sansbury Smith was able to get together with Tom Abrahams and add a little something extra to this book, to bring it full circle as something you would want to read to the start of one awesome series. This book helps you understand a bit more about 1stLt Brett, the man he still was underneath the monster he was made to be. Without giving anything away, I will say this is one book that I definitely recommend to others, especially if your thinking of starting the "EXTINCTION Cycle Series". You will not be disappointed in the least. Tom Abrahams wrote one amazing story here and letting Nick come in, with both of them tweaking the story up some, this can only be called AWESOME!!!!!!!
I’ve been waiting for the Story of Brett to finally come to life!! This by far in my opinion completes the already great Extinction Cycle series!! NS and TA couldn’t have written this any better. I’ve gone back to “Horizon” and intend to finish the series again! I didn’t want the story to end and it’s not going to!
What I really liked about the book was detailed point of view through Brett. You almost feel bad for the guy. He didn’t ask to be turned into a creature. The voice inside His head was great!! NS and TA really made this creature come to life! I could hear his joint and limbs popping while he got on all fours and sprinted.
I highly recommend this to anybody who loves zombie style books! But be aware, these aren’t your typical zombies!!
I'm delighted to admit I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure I would like it since I'm not at all crazy about Smith's Extinction Cycle series. I'm glad I gave this one a try. Mr. Abrahams makes his story move with excitement and fast paced action. I love the character of the reporter, Jimmy Linh. There's one thing for sure, Tom Abrahams can write characters that come alive while putting the reader in an invested relationship, with his characters, that will be long remembered. Yes, I recommend this book. It's a different slant on the effects of the VX-99 serum. I hope everyone who enjoys hard action will give this one a go. As always, happy reading, and have fun.
War is known to change people, but what happens in this book is beyond what I would have imagined. Because part of this story deals with war there is the expected violence and adult language.
With the Vietnam Conflict in full swing, young men were drafted including Trevor Brett. He was well-trained and inserted into a mission with specific orders that had unintended consequences. What happened twelve years later is an eye-opener for many.
I really enjoyed how the authors blended their worlds together. I look forward to reading the series that this prequel was based on.
I have always wanted to know the events following Lt. Trevor Brett's operation bright burn and the beginning of the Extinction series and this short novel bridged the gap nicely. I feel it was cut a little too short and could have continued further into the future to dive into brief introductions of future characters in the series tie in more tightly with the E series.
I love the Extinction Cycle of books and hadn’t read the RedLine story previously. Even better, this extended re-write is a collaboration between two of my favorite authors. If you have read the series, we only get a glimpse of the Lt Brett storyline. This one will take you through the full story and is a “need to read”. Thank you gentlemen for another great story.
An excellent and frightening prequel to the Extinction Cycle series! The origin of the VX-99 program that started it all. Chilling insights into the tortured life of Trevor Brett, a victim of an insidious secret soldier program and the events that lead our world to the brink.
This is the best prequel to a series I have ever read. It fits perfectly as if it was always a part of the first book. If you haven’t read any of the books I would recommend starting with this one, if you have read any of the other books in the series this is also a must read. An excellent addition to the series.
Grabs you by the throat! This thrilling origin story to the incredibly popular Extinction Cycle series is a pulse-pounding page turner. Strong characterization. Superior storytelling. A real joy for lovers of the post apocalyptic genre.
Brett is a monster, man made, vicious. He is horrifying yet part of me feels sorry for him because he didn't ask to be turned into the predator that he is. Perfect story that sets up the series.
Very good prequel to the Extinction cycle series and how this story originated. Looking forward to reading more from Tom Abrahams, I've already read everything from Nicholas except Hell Divers 4.
I liked the book but was annoyed at the character Gibson as he is being totally tunnel visioned and doesn't care about the people only the project. But how true it could be hey!
An excellent prequel to the 'Extinction Cycle' series by Nicholas Smith, and his creation of a different and dystopian world. The stories in this book, written by some of the best and well-known authors in post-apocalyptic fiction, and their viewpoints are a perfect blend. Read It!
Was pretty good until the Major drew his "Beretta 1911." I'm a gun guy; Beretta doesn't make 1911s. The Beretta M9 was the 9mm replacement for the .45 caliber 1911 in the US military. Stopped reading at that point.
