Sloan left home a year ago, hoping to escape her past. One night, a chance encounter will change her life forever. Sloan crosses paths with a dangerous being. He is ancient. Evil. And she has caught his attention.Sloan attempts to continue with day to day life but soon realizes that she has become his obsession. Not only does he stalk her by day, but he can enter her dreams, tormenting her while she sleeps.Desperate, Sloan searches for answers. And time is running short.
On a night like any other, on nothing more than an off-chance, Sloan sees someone who might be in trouble and decides to do something about it. She was just trying to help, reaching out with a few dollars to someone down on their luck. Except the hand she touched wasn’t human, the man she thought was homeless morphing into an otherworldly being, powerful and malicious. When his usually fatal touch fails to kill her, she receives his immediate and unswerving focus, unable to escape his attentions in daylight or dreams. Yet there is hope in those she finds to protect her, mortal or otherwise. Either way, her old life is gone and Sloan must use everything she has to stay alive.
If there was ever a reason not to help those in need, the possibility that they might be some kind of ancient angelic-style Evil entity that will stalk, hurt, perhaps even kill you, is more than enough to make you think twice. Of course, the first thing Sloan does is convince herself that she made it all up, because that kind of crazy is not easy to accept. It doesn’t take long for it to sink in though, particularly when the pain starts, and the normal day to day she was trying to continue falls apart. Sloan tries to reason with herself about what she’s experiencing, and once she finally comprehends how far this is above her pay grade, desperately searches for help. Her panic and fear, the isolation of her situation, is right there on the page, understandable and real. Her relationship with her best friend, Millie, becomes strained by secrets and they also form the basis for her connection with James, who knows about the supernatural world in which she now finds herself. It has a what-would-you-do vibe to it, that conflict between belief and disbelief, the desperate attempt to hold on to the everyday and the known when danger arrives unannounced and unwanted.
Yet as the book progresses this side fades away, especially as the supernatural character count goes up. There’s a frustrating mix of cryptic pronouncements and too much time spent discussing the background as the big players tell Sloan all the truths she needs to know in large chunks of exposition. The finale was particularly guilty of this, leaving a rather flat feeling that the fade to black ending didn’t help. These last chapters are used to set up big things for the next instalment while also explaining most of this one, but as it stands I’d need the promise of a whole load more depth and emotional connection to continue.
Overall, it’s written a light touch, with a chatty main character of the usual UF sort who shows flashes of verve when she’s searching for answers in the first half of the book, but increasingly is left to react to things and moved around like a doll by those around her in the latter part. As a result, it’s hard to be affected by her plight, placing her firmly in the just-another-UF heroine box. There’s the possibility of a comeback, some of the scenes where the bad guy throws down are chilling, but Sloan needs to up her game to stand among the great UF characters on the market today.
Dark Touch (#1 Glass Start Trilogy) is addictive, I could not put it down! I love how the main character, Sloan, is feisty and does not take crap from anyone! Her troubled past has evolved her into a resilient fighter. By this same token, we are taken through how her past has put up emotional walls, preventing her from navigating and being open to new relationships. You will soon be rooting for Sloan to defeat the Dark One! Cannot wait for the next book to come out. Get to writing miss Elle Lewis!
Sloan left home for Seattle to escape a bad scene. She struggles through a horrible job so she can get home and purge herself through her artwork. She encounters a stranger on the way home and when he touches her, her entire life changes and she becomes involved in an ancient struggle. Teamed up with James, who has seen the murder of others at the touch of these strange, dark beings, they must discover what they are involved in before the dark one's return for her.
Extremely, fast-paced story of good vs. evil, with a twist. You will have to discover the twist yourself, as I do not wish to spoil. There is enough suspense and action for all lovers of the genre. Great debut.
I would have scored higher, but I do not appreciate cliff hanger endings.
I became aware of this book through a reader's group. I found the front cover intriguing so gave it a go. Glad I did! This is a very assured debut by the author and has the makings of a great trilogy. I placed it on my fantasy-urban shelf but perhaps I should make a new shelf, fantasy-supernatural?? Elements I liked are: strong protagonist, realistic dialogue, mystery, powerful beings & a nasty antagonist. But an aspect I really appreciated was the description of everyday stuff. It was clear & concise, yet evocative. It reminded me of why I like Haruki Murakami novels: you read a passage about a guy getting a beer from the fridge, putting on a record, sitting down and then getting a call of his ex-wife. Just normal "stuff" but the author makes it interesting and brings you into the world. Elle Lewis does this very well and her descriptions also help you visualise the setting for any action. I'm not one for sappy romance so was glad the "hot spots" were sexy as opposed to breathless. The ending was very cool I thought, opening up a lot and reminded me of a particular film that I will not mention as it would give too much away, but it's when a certain character looks into the eyes of another. An excellent debut, all in all! Look forward to the next one!
Dark Touch is a great book that has all of the elements that Urban Fantasy readers will enjoy. After being touched by a supernatural being, Sloan finds herself haunted in the real world and in her dreams. She races to find the answers as to how to make this being go away, but the more she tries to understand, the deeper involved she finds herself. Her writing style is descriptive and characterization is captivating. The ending is an epic ride that readers will certainly enjoy. I look forward to the next book!
Dark Touch by Elle Lewis is the first in the Glass Star Trilogy, a paranormal/fantasy series.
First, let me thank the publisher Black Rose Writing and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Sloan Stolar moved from Los Angeles to Seattle, hoping to leave her past behind. It's been a year, and she is starting to feel comfortable.
Then, she encounters a being that will change her life. When she tries to give a homeless man some money, the man grabs her arm. This man is not homeless, nor is he human. His name is Darrow, and he is an ancient being, with black wings, and unbelievable strength. His touch should have killed Sloan, but she survived. He is now obsessed with her, entering her dreams, and physically assaulting her while she is awake.
But there is another force, and they hope to guard Sloan from Darrow's attacks, until they can figure out why she is so special.
My Opinions: I admit to having a problem with the first quarter of the book, which seemed to drag, and the writing seemed a little flowery ("Wet streams poured down the glass, glistening like liquid silver." and "The constant rain created a dark world filled with delicate strands of emerald grass that swayed beneath a stormy sky "). As well, the dialog seemed a little stilted, and the writing a little "simple". Now, I realize that this is her first book, and things did improve as the book progressed.
Although I am not a "romance" reader, I do realize that this seems to be an inevitable part of paranormal/fantasy novels, so I'm not going to complain. It was well-done, and not an in-your-face constant presence. The actual plot of the book took over.
I started to become vested in the characters, and the plot was, if not deep, interesting. Then it was more than interesting, and I was hooked.
Overall it was quite good, and a really fast read (even taking into account the slow start for me).
Now I am on a hunt for the next book in the series!

As a feminist reader and writer, I was happy to encounter Sloan, the protagonist in this story, who proved to be a strong, independent, and brave young woman in her attempts to overcome winged demons. The descriptions are visual and the storyline was engaging and suspenseful the whole way through. It was an exciting and well-crafted story, and I look forward to the next book and the continuation of Sloan’s journey.
This is a great story I read in one sitting, fast paced, intriguing characters. A whole new twist on the good vs evil story. I liked the fact the main character has real responses to her situation and struggles with it. The main reason I dropped a star is that the ending got a bit too confusing and over complicated and it ended with no real answers. I know it’s a cliffhanger but you tend to get some clear direction, but there wasn’t one. I will be definitely looking forward to the next book though, as I need answers.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest review
The book started off strong but I have to admit I was a little disappointed, don’t get me wrong it wasn’t bad just a little slow. For me there was too much world building and not enough action, It took to long to get there, I thought maybe there’s going to be this massive build up and then the good stuff will come and put everything together but as the book went on I found myself getting bored and then when the ending finally came and it felt a little rushed, leaving me confused and not really answering anything. I’m hoping this book was just a build up to the next after all it is a trilogy. My main issue was with the world building at first i was surprised at how well everything was described but then as the book went on i felt like it was starting to get a little repetitive. Sloan’s character development was great, She was easily likeable and I could really relate to her. her determination not to give up was inspiring.
I've been keen to read this book for a while now and was lucky enough to win this book in a giveaway. I was originally worried that a book this size might feel rushed but this is actually a triumph in showing that shorter books can be just as impactful and expressive next to larger novels. I adored Sloan, not just because she is this independent and intelligently strong character but because of how dynamic she is. Sloan doesn't just have a compelling back story thats mentioned and forgotten, you continually see how her past continues to affect her everyday life. Independency is often so romanticized that it is very refreshing to see a character hindered by their own strength. Dark Touch excels past the constrictions of one genre label. This is a suspenseful tale that envisions how truly terrifying and brutal it is to be stalked. I was not left with a sense that ultimately Sloan will defeat this evil and with that, I absolutely want more.
Since I started reading I couldn't put down the book. Elle changes the way I look at fantasy books forever. I haven't read anything like it before. Some of the characters are out of the world, literally. It also has a little romance that blossoms into a relationship that people long for. From beginning to end "Dark Touch" was filled with action that's why I couldn't put it down. The end just made me want more and I'm so looking forward for the next two.
I received Dark Touch as a present, and was not sure what to expect, as it's not a genre(urban fantasy) I would normally pick-up. Once I started to read though, I could not put it down until the final page, as it drew me right in. Elle paints a vivid picture of each of the leading characters, especially Sloan, who goes back and forth between reality and dreamland/good and evil. This is a faced paced read, and the first book of The Glass Star Trilogy. I an now waiting patiently for the next book, as I am excited to learn where it will lead Sloan, and me to next. I would suggest this book to anyone looking to get away from their daily grind, and get lost in a little fantasy.
Dark Touch fits perfectly into the paranormal and urban fantasy genre. What I liked most about it, apart from being my favorite genre, was its original mythology. The market is saturated with stories about vampires, werewolves, and witches (which I love and write about it, too). Therefore, a story that brings in new supernatural creatures is like a breath of fresh air!
This is not epic fantasy, so don’t expect intricate world-building, just enough for the plot to make sense. The characters, on the other hand, are intriguing and the fast pace of the story kept me engaged till the last page. By the way, if you’re planning to read it, arm yourself with patience, because it ends with a cliff hanger! But you’ll get some sort of closure, so it’s not bad, just leaves you wanting for more!
Sloan, the main character is touched by a supernatural creature and is supposed to die instantly. When she doesn’t, she attracts the attention of both the being who tried to kill her and others who want to protect her. A tug-of-war ensues. Sloan finds herself hunted both in the real world and in her dreams.
“Flashes of the battle raced across my thoughts. There were three of the warrior beings. I replayed what was said, trying to piece together information. Give her to me, Dark One. The warriors prevented Darrow from taking me. But it seemed as if they wanted me as well. For what reason, I still didn’t know.” Read more here: https://www.summonfantasy.com/book-re...
Ok...confession....I read too many books at the same time. Occasionally (often), I’ll think that I have got the gist of a plot of a new book and then I might (erroneously) judge it as “not my style” and it’ll get lost at the bottom of my Currently Reading pile. Unfortunately that happened to me with Dark Touch.
One of my preconceived notions was spot on, but it didn’t bother me as much as I thought it might (the romance parts). The other conclusion that I jumped to turned out to be just wrong. I didn’t realize that this was a book that included Angel-ish beings (yes there are huge wings on the cover...back up off me). I’ve never read an Angel novel but already “knew” that I’d hate it if I ever tried. Well that was stupid. Obviously. I enjoyed that aspect, and all of the rest of the characters very much.
I read this book on my kindle. As will often happen, once I get hooked on a story and start tearing through it, I’ll have no ideas how close I am to the end. I made my Netflixing wife jump when I unexpectedly hit the last page and read “End Of Book One” and then yelled out “Noooooo!” Lol. So yeah, despite it taking me two months to read this book, I should’ve knocked it out in that first weekend. I can’t wait for Book 2.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The first book in the trilogy is aptly titled as its a Dark Touch that sets the pins rolling, and in this case sets the story moving. Sloan Stolar works at a law firm in Washington, but its not a job she loves, rather its only a camouflage to help her escape her past life in California. Things get worse when an act of kindness one late night after work brings her into close contact with the dark forces. A simple touch sears her whole being and leads to unimaginable pain and violence. She experiences pain she cannot describe to others.
A man or rather a dark angel with pure black eyes shadow her dreams, turning them into nightmares where she is helpless and defenceless. Bewildered and terrified, Sloan tries to find reason behind these occurrences. All that passes her mind is to survive each day without being hunted or bruised. She keeps this secret from her close friend to protect her from the force that now lurks in every corner of her being. Her hunt for the truth behind the man leads her to a trail of extremely dark forces that will stop at nothing to kill her. Escaping them and finding the truth is what leads the story further.
The way Elle Lewis has written the book is captivating and engaging from the start. The writing is simple and lucid. Though at times some dialogues and swear words(From Sloan) seemed to be added as kick in the teeth, but they seemed jarring to me. Sloan's reaction to the supernatural and the lack of understanding about the same has been the best part to read. She seems realistic, just like us who would be jolted by such occurrences and at a moment doubt their own sanity. But as Sloan accepts the reality around her, she faces enormous turmoil within, having to battle this alone than risk the lives of those she loves. It is endearing to read her inner battle where she struggle to limit her thoughts about the people close to her lest she endangers them as well.
Sloan's past is mentioned in the passing, would definitely want to read more and was disappointed when consequent pages didnt throw much light on her past. But the reason she is pursued seems to be loosely connected with her past, thus making it a large part of her present reality as well.Sloan's character is also well charted and shown as a girl who knows how to handle tough nuts and does not buckle down easily. So when faced with forces beyond her, she is left to her own defence and is pushed around like a rag doll. Would love to see her stand up and give the dark forces a taste of their own medicine.
The old topic of Good vs Evil has been dealt with in a way that its not restricted to fantasy or imagination. The author has made all efforts to make it plausible and logical, such that reading was smooth and characters mature well through the pages. They are not stagnant or linear. The only drawback was that in the last few pages it seemed that in trying to meander the course of the story to an end, Elle has elucidated so much that it becomes hard to take it all in at once. The same was advisable to have done through the story with Sloan discovering the answers rather than being handed down. With a killer on loose and even nightmares draining the life out of you, Sloan couldn't go manage to find the needed answers. But too much at the end leaves you confused and the whole mix of fantasy with science left me reeling under the effect. The book is a quick a read and I finished it in 2 days. The book ca n be enjoyed by not only the young adults but anyone interested in fantasy and the supernatural genre.
Waiting with all eagerness for the next two. Cant wait to know whats more in store. (
Sloan Stolar is trying to leave behind her haunted past in California. As an assistant at a busy law firm in Washington, she doesn't love her job, but things could be worse, a lot worse. Kept late one night at work, she meets a man who with a single touch, will forever change her life. A single act of kindness will bring violence and pain to her doorstep.
A man with pure black eyes now stalks her dreams, turning her sleeping hours into an endless nightmare. Confused and afraid, Sloan tries to come to terms with her new reality. Suddenly passing her latest art exam isn't the most important part of her day, now she has to do all she can to simply survive. She desperately wants to tell someone about the man who's become obsessed, but who would believe her? Especially when that same man has supernatural powers.
This book has a character with the most realistic reaction to the supernatural I have read in a while. Sloan battles with herself to accept the reality of the supernatural, slowly accepting what is happening to her isn't some mental break. And the inner torment she has at being alone in this situation was heart breaking. It really hit home for me.
I would have liked to see Sloan's past be a bigger part of the book. There are moments where it influences her, but it's not enough of a presence. She does seem to have a sort of PTSD from her home life in California and incorporating more symptoms of it would have been an interesting read. While I understand it isn't he focus of the book, it is a large part of who she is and it is only mentioned in full once.
The writing style was simpler than I was used to, and some of the dialogue was clunky and didn't read well. The swears Sloan dropped also seemed a bit overdone, like they were being put on the page just to shock readers. I'm also not a huge fan of sudden romances, even in crisis situations, so when Sloan suddenly finds love it fell short.
The book was a quick a read and I appreciated the new take on good and evil, though the explanations of it were rushed towards the end. Sloan isn't able to do a lot of information hunting in the book, and the reasons stated were believable, but I still would have liked to see more answers founds out by Sloan, rather than an exposition right at the end. Sloan, for the most part, does have her questions answered, but it was hard to take it all in.
I can't say I am interested in reading the next book. I do think people who enjoy fast paced love stories would enjoy this and anyone who needs a quick supernatural read.
I had the opportunity several months back to read Dark Touch by Elle Lewis as a Beta Reader. Full disclosure, I'm also an author with Black Rose Writing. Elle has managed to nail her audience with this novel that delves into her passion for writing Fantasy and Action and has spun it out with her own take and some new and exciting initiatives. From the get-go Dark Touch gets straight down to business. We meet the protagonist in her setting at work and right after departing we learn where the novel's title comes from in a scene that is dark, scary and might give some creeps in the night. This is book one in three and it sets the scene in perfection and comprises an interesting central character with a back story of her own. There are some thrills and spills along the way and if fantastical characters are your thing, then you'll love what Elle has done with them. Dark Touch is fast-paced and doesn't let up with that. There's also an element of Romance so something for fans of that genre also. If you read this book, you'll want to see what happens in sequels. Fun, Frolics, Action, Fantasy and Romance - What more could you want?
I started reading this book in preparation for the second one, which I won in an ER giveaway. Initially, I was curious about what may be in store since the cover was interesting and I'm a HUGE fan of fantasy novels. Ultimately, I did enjoy the book, but it was off to a rough start.
It took me a solid ten chapters to feel invested in the book (too long in my opinion). The main character is relatable, but not quite engaging. By the end of the book I felt like I knew more about what she wore throughout the whole thing than anything actually going on. The writing style definitely reminds me of a new author which some clunky dialogue and info-dumps, but overall not too bad.
By the end (about 14 chapters in) I was decently invested. I think this built a good foundation for the second book. Despite having to wait until the end for a massive info-dump to figure out what was going on, the basis is interesting. I look forward to reading the second one and seeing the author develop.
December 24th,2018 I received my first Christmas gift to myself "Dark Touch" by Elle Lewis. Not only was it my first Christmas gift but it was also my best Christmas gift. Dark Touch is a captivating fictional novel that takes you through many different emotions, from warm fuzzy feelings to heartbreaking moments. I felt that Elle Lewis was able to write a fictional novel while touching on pieces of reality. There were scenes in which I felt that she was writing a book about my own life. It was the perfect balance between horror, love, friendships and hardships. I am extremely excited to have found a book that is unique and so well written, so much so that I looked forward to escape my own reality to be in Sloan's reality. I think that this book would appeal to audiences that truly appreciate a well written book regardless of the age. Every scene was filled with perfect descriptions, verb, adverbs, adjectives that allowed the imagination to run wild...."wet streams poured down the glass, glistening like liquid silver...". Thank you Elle Lewis for a job well done.

You know the film 'The Room', well this is the literary (I'm using that word loosely) equivalent. Despite the tropes (poor little rich girl, insta-love, 'perfect' female with the power to save humanity etc...) there was the potential for an entertaining story, but the style of writing coupled with some poor copy reading (please note I am reading an advance copy, perhaps these will be rectified in the published copy) did hinder my enjoyment. A bouncer is described as 'fowl' mouthed, somebody 'managed to get passed them', Sloane 'pursued' each 'isle' when infact she perused each aisle! Sloane walks into a coffee shop and instantly wants espresso, but two pages later orders a large Americano with cream.etc... etc... I think perhaps the best line though, that pretty much sums up my observations is this little bonne-mot: 'The truck was not brand new but not too old either.'
My thanks go to the publishers and Net Galley for the advanced copy in return for an honest review.
okay wow. So I honestly thought this book was going to be SO MUCH better than it was. The beginning was kind of okay, bearable. But then after a while when even after the 'big plot twist', the book didn't develop in tone- I was immensely disappointed. I basically felt indifferent and separate from the character the whole way, and DID not sink into the book. At all.
Sure it had some good qualities like some of the language was pretty decent with borderline humour, with a sort of sarcastic tone (which is all the rage at the moment). But that's it. Little character development and.....okay plot line. So overall, the book was a waste of time and money, and I would NOT be recommending it.
So far, I must say, Dark Touch is a very well written and easy read. If you're a fan of Twilight, you'll be a fan of Elle Lewis. She writes the main character's experience so vividly, that we could actually feel her pain and confusion, if that's the experience we are traveling in. The descriptions are great, making it easy to be engulfed inside of Sloan's world (...as well as her emotions). The author makes it all believable and truthful, even while we are in the middle of a fantasy battle. The mystery is strong, making me want to keep turning the pages, in hopes I just might find out some more about what is plaguing her body... or more importantly: Who?
Staring as a seemingly cautionary tale about helping those in need, Dark Touch morphed, much as the antagonist, into something else. The protagonist is haunted day and night by this being. She is determined and resolute in not giving up. There is potential for this to develop into a great series. It needs a good professional editing to correct things like “fowl mouth” and “pursuing” when they mean “perusing”. It’s very wordy and more telling than showing. The action takes a while to build which makes it difficult to stay invested in reading. YA readers might warm to this more though. It was a good first start to a series. With a little consistency and editing, it could be great.
This is some book! Despite what some have called glaring holes in the plot- which I couldn't see BTW- the story about trying to change your future despite your past is not a new idea. The switching from real into fantastical serves a purpose, and once you get used to the rhythm, it makes sense because , not despite the story-line.
This is the first of a reported trilogy. If you like dark fantasy, this is a book for you. Well written characters drive an awesome story that when it stumbles, manages to get back on track. Recommended 4/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from it's publisher and voluntarily read and reviewed it] @brwpublisher
I was not expecting an angel/demon novel. Well, they aren't called that in the book, but for the review, that's what I'm calling them. Sloane was seriously scared out of her mind when the Dark One came. Seems like most books/movies/tv shows have at least one character that is the Dark One. When the Dark One comes, you die. But not Sloane. See, she's special. I would compare what is called "The Source" to "The Force". We have a multi-dimensional novel here. Being special doesn't mean you don't get involved with the cute guy who has also sorta been through what you're seeing.
I bought this for a Halloween. The title seemed perfect. Anyway, the plot was good and the thrills were at a level that my Sci-fi and fantasy could handle. There wasn't any rape but there was hot consensual sex. dont buy the Audible book because the voice is to masculine for the main character. Plus he makes conversations between characters confusing. I'm going to return the audio- it was that bad. Its like if a Dad voiced a 20 year old girl. Just ugh!
I really liked this story. It was entertaining and kept me reading. I’m not an avid YA fan, but well-written, fun stories with monsters and mayhem are right up my alley. Dark Touch delivered. The nefarious Darrow was especially well-done and I genuinely feared for Sloan’s plight against him. With a compelling style that keeps the story moving, Lewis has me excited to see where this story goes in book 2!
This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves fantasy. I agree with one of the other reviewers when they say that Lewis has a way of writing that makes the ordinary tasks of day to day living more interesting. Her descriptions bring every scene to life and pulls you into the book. I loved all the characters but i especially loved Nyx. I can't wait for book two to see more of her hopefully!
