First and foremost, this book delivers exactly what it promises; it does not aim to be an exhaustive study or an in-depth biography, but rather a clear, accessible, and visually appealing introduction to the world of Gustav Klimt.
The text, as is often the case in this series, is concise. It aims to provide a general overview of the artist’s beginnings, his development, and some key aspects of his work. Far from being a limitation, this brevity works in its favor because it makes for a quick read and keeps the focus on what matters most. For those who want to begin exploring Klimt, his life, and his art, it is an excellent choice. Furthermore, the balance between biographical information and analysis of the work is well achieved, without leaning too heavily in either direction or leaving any notable gaps. Where the book truly stands out (and where Könemann once again demonstrates its consistency) is in the visual section. The reproductions are excellent: the brightness, color, and definition do justice to Klimt’s ornamental richness, his golds, his textures, and his details. The paper, moreover, remains of remarkable quality. I own editions from different years of this same collection, and (at least in my experience) there has been no decline in quality: it remains a book that feels pleasant to the touch, sturdy, and designed to be enjoyed as an object as well.
I believe that all the books in this collection share a particular quality: they are ideal for “passing the time.” And that doesn’t make them lesser works. Through their format (images accompanied by brief texts that gently guide us), they create a sort of portable paper gallery, an intimate experience where one can pause, move forward, or go back, without the pressure of academic reading.

For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.
