Stowaways! As Abel and Fox tumble out of Farmington they must quickly land on their feet. The protections of home are gone and they find themselves in a hungry, wild new world.
Skottie Young has been an illustrator and cartoonist for over ten years working for entertainment and publishing companies such Marvel, Warner Bros., Image, Upper Deck, Mattel, and many more.
He is currently illustrating the New York Times Best Selling and Eisner Award Nominated adaptions of L. Frank Baum's OZ novels with writer Eric Shanower. The series has gained acclaim from both fans and critics.
Skottie currently lives in Illinois with his family, Casey, Baxter and their Saint Bernard, Emma.
I was taken by Issue #1 but unsure about where the story was going. There's a lot of setup as we meet Abel and his smart-mouth Fox companion. The book ends with Abel leaving town to escape his father's abuse, but are the fantastical elements meant to be elegant artistic representations of Abel's distress and confusion, or are we in line for an actual fantasy adventure? The talking Fox and the odd futuristic details around the edges of the panels suggest an actual fantasy, but Young keeps his cards close to his vest.
Issue #2 clearly and unreservedly announces that we are on a Quest. This issue is the best example I know of, (apart from "Wizard of Oz"), that demonstrates how you can have a character's whole world turn upside down and inside out, (with strange characters, mysteries, Chosen One hints, wizard guides, and a real live Quest), and still have the narrative be crisp, clear, and compelling.
The dialogue is deadpan, with some funny banter between Able and Fox, and a lot of dry humor in the characters' throwaway lines and observations. This somehow feels authentic and honest even as it becomes increasingly fantastical. I still don't know where this is going, (apart from being more or less a coming of age and finding yourself sort of tale), but I most definitely want to follow the journey.
It should also be noted that the artwork is beautiful and exceptionally well suited to the tale. Lots of times covers don't tell you anything because they are one-off artworks that don't reflect the contents. Not so here. The colors, detail, atmosphere, warmth, and personality that shines from the cover also informs all of the work in the book. This is a gorgeous series.
So, I'm totally sold and ready to follow Abel to whatever end he finds. (Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
This picks up where #1 left off with Abel escaping with the talking fox. They come across some Dumbledore looking dude and Abel is trying to figure out what's making him turn into this comics version of the hulk.
The banter between Abel and the fox are amazing and they make a great team.
While I loved the first issue, something is different this time around. The art is still superb, but the dialogue kills the magic. Attempts at humor fall flat, and the characters fail to come to life. Things feel rushed. Hopefully this won’t turn into yet another series with a terrific debut but mediocre continuation.
Loved both the artwork and how the story develops in a middle pace. It's not so slow that it's boring, neither too fast that you can't follow. I also liked all of the characters in this issue. I'm genuinely excited to see how it's going to continue in 3rd issue.
Really intriguing work from Skottie Young. Looking forward to seeing where this is going; the art is...sharp, beautiful, stylised. I want more of it. I want to know more about the world; it's got something of a steampunk vibe and I need more details!
The second issue of Middlewest was just as striking as the first. I adore the colors this series has been using. They’re so pretty and bold, it’s hard not to fall in love with them. Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s colors perfectly compliment Jorge Corona’s artwork. This series might have to get the best images of the year, in my book at least. But while the artwork always catches my eye first, the plot has been what’s keeping me entertained. Abel is an interesting character. It’s so clear that there’s so much more to him and the world around him than he knows, I just haven’t put all the pieces together just yet. In a way the series reminds me of a warped version of the Wizard of Oz. There’s the child on a journey, the adults being full of magic, some are all-knowing. Plus Abel even has a guide. That’s where the similarities end though. Middlewest truly is its own unique piece of work. There’s nothing quite like it out there. This issue did a fantastic job of further establishing the plot as well as fully catching my curiosity. I can see what some of the characters are up to, but not all of them. I can’t wait to see what will be revealed in the next issue.
We still have no idea what the hell is going on with dad and the scar but colors and lines are soo good and you just want to see more and try to read fast and it’s too short. Takes 10 minutes or less. It’s getting more piquant when we see new characters join the team like jeb. And fox’s sense of humor is also a reason to continue. Their friendship is so warm. Just take a look. You won’t be regret.
A perfect issue. Way better than the first issue, which was already very good. The art is beautiful, colouring included. The story is very intriguing, more mystery and secrets and the journey continues for our two friends. Snappy dialogue. I’m in love with this series
I really enjoyed this issue. The artwork is still beautiful but the adventure is really getting started now. We meet some new characters and see a deeper relationship between Abel and the fox. I'm excited to see where this is going.
