Definitely enjoyed this one more than the first. Action packed, danger everywhere, romance, friendship, and not knowing who can and can't be trusted. A solid second book in an exciting trilogy.

I absolutely LOVED the first book in this amazing series, the author's debut, 'The Initiation' and was desperately waiting to get my hands on The Expedition. Imagine my joy when I received an advance copy of the book!
I started reading The Expedition yesterday and I just could not put it down - I know the phrase is over used but in this case it is absolutely true. I was up most of the night- I just HAD to finish.
What a book! It has everything - brilliantly well realized characters, drama, action, love, hate, betrayal, loss. It is cinematic in scope, visionary and chillingly real in its portrayal of an apocalyptic world. It is so beautifully written and incredibly well plotted - this series would make a brilliant movie. I felt part of the characters, the action unfolding around me.
I thought The Initiation was perfection and I am awed and thrilled that this book is even better - the author has raised his own bar, improved on perfection.
One of the things I liked best about this book is how the characters are taken out of their comfort zone and as a result of this, come into their own. I loved the interactions between the characters and how real they were, how relatable, despite the intense challenges they faced.
This is an incredibly well plotted, masterpiece of a book.
From the first line: 'They say you don't shoot to kill, you shoot to stay alive', to the last, I lived this book, my heart pounding throughout. And like with The Initiation, I especially loved the the humour sprinkled throughout the book.
This is an absolutely brilliant follow up to The Initiation, and I just cannot wait for the next, last book in the series. Although I don't want it to be the last. I could read about Drayden forever.
My teenage children are also HUGE fans of this series and author and they feel the same way.
This is a powerful series and scarily possible given the way the world is heading today. It raises many questions about our choices and makes us think, ponder, consider.
In my daughter's words - 'This series is the BEST. Hunger Games and Divergent have NOTHING on it. I cannot wait for the next book. I hope the author writes it QUICKLY.' I hope so too. I cannot wait!

Expedition, the second novel in The Initiation series, is set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian landscape with a plot that is all too real and strikingly relevant to recent world events. I loved the complexity of the plot which is intelligently written and makes you think, and there are threats around every corner hellbent on precipitating the demise of characters I have come to love. The tension ramped up over the course of the novel and had my heart pounding at certain points.

Pacing is quick and there is so much action throughout. The descriptive prose was also right up my street and made the world and characters come alive. One of the most compelling and compulsively readable dystopian fiction titles I've had the pleasure to read this year. A very entertaining tale, albeit a little more predictable than the series opener. However, the plot twist at the end was really unexpected and now has me excited and patiently awaiting the third instalment.

Many thanks to Permuted Press for an ARC.

The Expedition is the second book in the INITIATION series and let me break it out to you, it's even better! The first book was exciting enough but the second book outdid itself on so many levels.
The first one being the characters. We get to see real growth in them, and a kind of development that we were seeking since the Initiation. Again, friendship has been highlighted indefinitely throughout the entirety of the novel, and it couldn't get any better.
Second, the plot. Initiation introduced a dystopian world that scared us to hell and back, but it develops into something even more menacing and darker in this one. This book is the epitome of the survival of the fittest in the crudest sense. Packed with action, emotions, and the right amount of thrill, The Expedition will take you places you don't want to visit but yet can't help but stay. It's the kind of dilemma we can't solve but love. If this ain't the perfect sequel, then I don't know what is!

NEWS FLASH : The third book in the series THE INSURRECTION is to be released soon on the 18th of Feb, 2020. 😍

Review-
Drayden and his friends passed The Initiation, all thanks to Drayden and their luck. The Expedition catches the story where Initiation left. As the series moves forward the story becomes easier to grasp and moves at a pace that suits the readers.
I would say the characters grew up experience wise in this book as the author takes us to a journey towards Boston amongst the wilderness of the world post confluence. The story of The Expedition shades some light to the world which lies beyond Drayden's New America, and the condition of the survivors.
To sum everything up, I would say I loved The Expedition more, which the author predicted I would. The plot, the peak to the outside world, the complex characters of the guardians and above all the shocking truth about New America all worked out in the book's favour. I know this book would be loved by readers when it releases on December,4th next month and now I'm more than eager to finish the series.

Thank you to Permuted Press and the author for the advanced copy of The Expedition.

I don't usually write reviews, but this book was just so good. I stumbled upon The Initiation and loved it (5 stars for me). If I could give this 6 stars I would. This book is a quest story, taking the characters on an adventure outside New America, although it retains a lot of the problem solving elements from The Initiation. I can't even think of any other book to compare it to. Like The Initiation, it starts a little slow but quickly becomes unputdownable. Once the expedition began I never stopped reading. I've read so many books where not a lot happens, with pages full of descriptions of feelings and settings. This book is the opposite. So much happens. The plotting is excellent and the pacing well done, especially in the last quarter of the book. I cannot wait till the next one! Seriously, put down the 28th YA fantasy you've read this year and start reading this series.

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.

As a huge fan of book one of the series (The Initiation), I was excited to get my hands on this sequel. And The Expedition did not disappoint! I was curious to see how the author would continue the momentum set up in The Initiation, where the kids faced the Bureau's carefully constructed (and deadly) challenges that left me holding my breath, biting my nails, and unable to put the book down. In The Expedition the the kids leave the walls of New America with their escort of four Guardians, who are the only means of control and manipulation the Bureau has on the situation. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say that the trip does not go as expected (by the kids or the Guardians!), and the kids exhibit the same smarts and strengths that helped them survive the Initiation.

I HIGHLY recommend this series, and am already eager to get my hands on book 3!!!

I received an advanced copy of The Expedition from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I loved The Expedition! It is a well written page turner which I couldn't put down. As the second installment in a trilogy which began with The Initiation, it tells the tale of the teen pledges and their perilous journey outside the walls of New America. The teens, accompanied by a team of elite Bureau Guardians, search the unexplored world in hopes of connecting with another civilization. What they find is danger at every turn and a quagmire of conflict and hidden agendas.

Unlike other young adult trilogies, this one got even better with the second installment. The plotting is tighter, the characters more developed and interesting and the dystopian world even more fascinating. It was a real page turner, well written with very good vocabulary and with good moral lessons along the way. A good and fast read and will keep the attention of all genders. I highly recommend the series and can't wait until the last one is published next year. As a public library director, I'm proud to have the series in our library.

This second instalment takes places almost immediately after the end of the first book. After surviving the Initiation, Drayden and his fellow survivors, Sidney, Catrice, and Charlie, are thrown into a new challenge, tasked with travelling to Boston on a mission crucial to the survival of New America.

Although this second book didn't move along at the pace of the first, there was enough to keep me interested. Several twists and turns to the story and an element of uncertainty around one member of the group kept things fresh, although unfortunately the love triangle aspect still remained. I am still at a loss for the reason all male characters seem to favour drippy Catrice over the more kick-ass Sidney. Overall, it was an entertaining read, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Permuted Press, for the opportunity to review an ARC.

The Good:
- I really like the characters of this book. They're all unique in their own way and they have their strengths and weaknesses as well. In order to survive, they all have to work together. Where one falls short with their weaknesses, another picks up with their strengths. It really creates a bond between the groups that gradually grows on you.

-I read The Initiation and The Expedition back to back so I didn't need much of a recap but it was there for others who may not have read the first book. I'd say it's much easier to make sense of the second one if you know everything that happened in the first, but from Babu's recapping it's not completely necessary. I do recommend the first book, though. It's amazing!

-The group centers around teenagers who are just now getting a feel of the real world. There's love, betrayal, confusion, loss, gains. The story feels fleshed out due to this. The way the characters are exploring their world along with their newfound feelings on love and relationships makes it a great read. You can really connect with the characters because you can look back on when you were just starting out with a relationship and can recognize some of the errors you may have faced as well.

-The scenery! The kids are exploring a brand new world outside of their cut off civilization. The world-building is amazing due to the fact that some 90% of the population has died. Babu writes that the world is lush with greenery and animals you normally wouldn't find in a bustling city roaming around on highways due to Mother Nature's regrowth.

-There's so much humor within the story! Seeing as this is a group of teenagers embarked on a seemingly impossible mission, they rise above and beyond while still maintaining their sanity while they're at it. The bickering and short one liners are what make the story.

-There's a plot twist! I live for those, and I'm excited to see what pans out in the next book! Threw me for the biggest loop.

The Bad:
- I really wanted to yell at Drayden and tell him to stop being so MEHHHH. He aggravated me with all of his internal struggling. I wanted to shake him and tell him who he is and what he's capable of. He went back and forth between who he wants to be and who he really is so bad it started grating on my nerves. I understand that becoming who you are and getting there is a challenge and Babu really showed the internal struggle a lot of people have. So it's not a negative per se, but I needed Drayden to know he doesn't have to be anyone other than himself because he is enough.

What a great follow-up to the Initiation. The continuation of suspense from complex challenges of the subway into the world outside New America was a wonderful second step. This was a great entree to the appetizer of the initiation and I’m looking forward to the dessert. (Yes, I have eaten dinner yet!)

Our consumer society, in Chris's Babu vision, is a mixture of chaos and disorder. The decline can't be stopped by adults who are already caught in the vortex of daily habits, too tired or too bored to act. Showing the right from wrong to the young generation, encouraging them to follow a healty life, and to be responsable, are good reasons for Chris Babu to write a book and for us to read it and think about. Especially when the author uses such a captivating way to explain this priciple.
There is no peace in 'The Expedition' and there was none in 'The Initiation'. The readers will have to practice the breath control and anger management. My personal advice for them is to do patience exercises too, until de third book in the series will be released. I'm going to place 'The Expedition' in 'the can't put this book down category'.

I didn't know this was second in a series. I think it's better if you read the first book. I love the cover. It's like an Amazon adventure. This is a ya dystopian novel with lots of action and drama with great characters. It's a good read overall.

Chris Babu has done it again!!! I absolutely adore this series and the characters. I quickly became invested in them after the first book, The Initiation, but I am even more so now. They grow so much more in this second installment and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The book was a little slow going for me in the beginning because I just could not wait for their adventure to begin. Once they started, I had a hard time putting the book down! I just wanted to keep on reading to find out what happens next.

We get to meet some new characters this time around but I am still crushing on the originals. They banded together once again. So much happens that you will be on the edge of your seat. You will laugh, cry, get frustrated to no end and feel so much concern for them. I can honestly say that this book will bring out every emotion you have.

I thought that the initiation was tough but this adventure is way worse. I am fearful of what they will be up against in the last and final book of the series. I am trying to be patient but feel like I may combust with excitement for when it finally arrives! If you enjoy apocalyptic/dystopianesque reads with tons of action/adventure thrown in, you would really enjoy this series and I highly advise that you pick it up!!

I received this book not knowing until after that it was a second book in this series. After tracking down a copy of the first book and reading it was an interesting story.
The world building is eerily comparitive to a modern day civilisation and human race if paired with a similar fate. This real life comparitive vibe felt throughout the book from the descriptive language and stark vast "apocalyptic" feel was a welcome addition to the overall reading experience.
The characters were well developed and complex though none really blew me away with thier passion or commitment and some were petulant bratty even and possessive.
Pacing was quick and writing was simplistic yet descriptive which made this a very fast read.
I would recommend you give it a go but read book one first.
3.5 Star read.

Full review featured in bonus episode 2 of our monthly podcast, Hello Fellow Kids: https://soundcloud.com/user-476178897...

A book that sets up a ton of questions and answers none of them, without providing a compelling reason to seek the answers in the next volume. The world continues to be intriguing, but the characters are still thin, the dialogue is still stilted, and the plot is muddled in unnecessary twists and lazy romantic subplots. If you loved the first book, this sequel will suit you just fine, but if you were on the fence about the Initiation, nothing here will sell you on the series.

*A special thanks to Chris Babu and Permuted Press for providing me with an eCopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.*

The Blurb:

Having survived the Initiation, Drayden and his gang must go on a deadly mission to contact other civilizations (if they still exist!). The New America’s solar and battery power is failing and they need help in other for the colony to survive. But Drayden has his own plans: he wants to find out what truly happened to his mother and the reason why Guards are accompanying them. It couldn’t really be for their protection now, could it…?

Introduction:

I was offered the opportunity to review the first two books in Chris Babu’s dystopian trilogy by Permuted Press. I jumped on it because, as you lads and lasses know, I’m a big lover of dystopian. The blurb appealed to me. It seemed to have anything I love: logic, realism, courage, quests, trials, a dystopian setting… and I could go on! So, here’s my review of the second book, The Expedition. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for this pleasant opportunity, Chris Babu and Permuted Press!

The Positive Sides:

What did I love the most about this book? The stakes! They’re greater than ever; yes, even than the Initiation! It’s now a deadly mission against the Aeru virus that destroyed most of the human population across the world. It only seems like a simple boat ride Drayden and company need to go on… but you know it’s going to get pretty nasty. Indeed, I enjoyed (big time!) how progressively worse it gets for the characters as the story unfolds. My excitation was high because the suspense kept building on and on. These were delicious steps I had to climb!

Speaking of characters, I liked how they clearly have evolved (like Drayden being more confident in his own abilities and self) to be a more fulfilled version of themselves. I felt as though they were more “complete” to themselves. Plus, their relationships followed the same path, what with Drayden now having a girlfriend in his group of friends. This group of friends is also more tightly knit in the face of danger. It’s fun that they learned from the Initiation and build on it.

Now, something else that I appreciated about The Expedition: secrets are everywhere! You think all’s good but uh! Oh! someone overhears officials talking about a plan and later other secrets come out into the light-Drayden’s light and ours, that is. This was quite entertaining as, while it was obvious the boat mission wasn’t all it appeared to be, it was awesome to catch glimpses of what was truly going on underneath the whole situation.

Moreover, I was happy to find that the puzzles were back and have evolved along with the rest! Indeed, they’re more discreet and while they have you working out the whole plot, there are other puzzles on the side and under (in the subplots!) It was a real delight as I feared the puzzles and general intrigue would be gone… But no, they just took on a different shape!

The Negative Sides:

Frankly, what really stuck out to me was the info dumping. Unfortunately, it happens at the beginning of the book. Even though it’s spaced, it’s still apparent, which is a slight disappointment. Then, the info dumping happens further along the book.

BUT since it’s not big info dumps (they’re cut in smaller bites), that makes them easier to swallow. I told myself “Meh, okay, I’ll roll with it for the sake of this book.”

And I have to admit that the ones at the beginning do help in situating us better, so it’s not that bad.

Of course, if you hate those, it’s a negative point. Most people dislike them, but you can roll with the few in this book for the sake of the awesome story, great writing and the sheer suspense!

And that’s it; I don’t have any more issues with this book.

In Conclusion:

Since I really enjoyed this story, I give The Expedition a rating of 5 out of 5 . I kept wanting to jump back in and read more and more of it. What happened to Drayden? What about THAT secret? Now, now, I’m not trusting those guys…

See? It’s just captivating. I’m genuinely hooked to this series and will be waiting for the third (and last) one to come out eagerly.

Can I read it now?

Oh. What, it’s not out yet?

But maybe… just maybe… I could take a peek at-

No?

Oh.

I WANT THE THIRD ONE, OKAY?!

After surviving the Initiation in Chris Babu’s THE INITIATION, Drayden and the others thought that they could live a happy life in a better place --- yet that could not be further from the truth. With New America’s systems failing, Drayden and his team must venture outside the walls of New America in an Expedition looking for other groups like them. Yet outside those walls are unimaginable dangers, including the superbug that destroyed the population of the whole world years prior.

On top of all that, Austin --- one of the young Guardians who is charming, funny and smart --- appears to be winning over Catrice, the one person Drayden cares about after Tim died. But Drayden has more on his mind, such as figuring out what happened to his exiled mother. He isn’t the only one that is looking for more than simply survivors in Boston as the Guardians appear to have a secret mission of their own. Together, they will journey into the unexplored world outside of the walls of New America to try to save humanity as they know it.

As Drayden, Catrice, Sidney, Charlie and the team of Guardians explore the uncharted world around them, they discover more and more about the world around them as well as the world they left behind. As they go further and further, they realize that nothing they thought they knew about their home in New America is as it seems.

After reading THE INITIATION, I was pretty excited to get my hands on the second book, if only to know what happened next. THE EXPEDITION surely delivered in that regard. One thing Babu always does well is his plotting. As the events occur with the story, I am always intrigued and on the edge of my seat. He consistently has unique challenges and creations for the characters to face. While in THE INITIATION his characters’ main goal was simply surviving, THE EXPEDITION goes beyond that and into the politics of New America, adding a whole new aspect of the world into his story. On top of that, I love all the science-y aspects. Maybe it’s because I am a huge math and science nerd but I love the various inventions and innovations he discusses as well as the plausibility of the various horrors in this new world. They make this future appear simultaneously terrifyingly realistic and fascinating to behold.

Although I did like these various things, the delivery of the story was just not fulfilling. One of the golden rules of good storytelling is “show not tell.” Yet it seems like Babu is just writing a list of the things that happened. He fails to infuse emotions in the storytelling, which ripped away any connection I had to the characters from the first book. The characters don’t feel real because all their emotions are so cliched and spelled out. He writes much like a screenplay. The dialogue and plot is there --- but there is little to no context for who the characters are. I can imagine an actor delivering the words he writes in a compelling way, but I missed that same depth in his prose.

*I was given this book courtesy of TLC Book Tours and the author in exchange for an honest review*

This book picks up right off where The Initiation left off, with the new members of the bureau headed on a mission to see if there is life outside of "New America". Four 16 year old kids are expected to lead themselves and several armed guards on a mission from the old New York City to Boston. Fearing that they will catch the superbug that wiped out most of humanity, fighting for their lives takes on a whole new meaning as they struggle to make it to Boston alive.

I am going to start off saying that I have read very, very little dystopian in my day. Not because I don't like it, but just because I am not drawn to it. I consider myself to be a slightly paranoid person, so reading about a future that could potentially happen can give me the creeps. This one, however, didn't scare me, and I liked that about it.

The characters in this book are really well fleshed out, and I felt like I connected with them more in this sequel than I did in the first book. I found myself holding my breath when one of my favorite characters was in jeopardy and sighing relief when they turned out to be okay. I could identify with different characteristics in most of them, and also find characteristics in them that I aspire to be.

The storyline itself is relatively strong, keeping me engaged and guessing. I actually found some aspects of this book keeping me more on edge than a few thrillers I have read lately but without the spooky vibes that a thriller can bring. I enjoyed the imagery in this book; I felt like I could see the wreckage that America would be a few decades after civilization crumbled apart.

I took off one star because the dialogue in the book was incredibly cheesy, to the point where it was distracting at times. The characters use a variety of their own curse words, calling each other "flunks" and saying "oh shkat." While I definitely appreciate an author that cleans up the language for a YA novel, I found these variations irritating.

I took one other star because the of the pacing of the book. When the storyline picked up and started going, it REALLY went quickly. I read 150 pages one day because I couldn't put it down. But I found myself dragging through and skimming on the days where it went slowly as I was reading about the awkward romance between two of the main characters, the descriptions of the maps the characters were reading, etc.

Overall, I recommend this series to anyone who likes YA dystopian. I also think it would be great for younger readers that are just starting to read dystopian because of the clean language and the easy to follow storyline.

With plenty of breathtaking action, nail-biting suspense, awesome thrills and unexpected surprises, The Expedition by Chris Babu is even better than its predecessor and I absolutely can’t get enough!

I’m not so sure if I should be reading dystopian books at a time like this, but I’m addicted. While the idea and concept are nothing new and seem a bit familiar with other dystopian books I’ve read, Babu makes it his own and takes readers on an amazingly twisty and thrilling ride. I think it’s imaginative, interesting, and such a well-written story.

Drayden and his friends survived The Initiation, but the tests are far from being over. Now, they must go outside the walls and face new dangers such as Aeru, the deadly superbug that wiped out humanity. With secrets, lies, and unknown threats, can Drayden and his friends live through their expedition?

I think this is an amazing sequel and I enjoyed a bit more than the first. There’s just more of everything in The Expedition and we get to see Drayden and his friends explore the outside world and face new dangers which made the story even more thrilling and entertaining. The writing is superb and addictive. The world-building is great, and I enjoyed seeing the outside world. The pacing is amazing and there was never a dull moment. There’s plenty of action, danger, secrets, excitement, drama, and romance (still don’t really like the love triangle, but it has its moments). There are some unexpected surprises and never knowing what would happen next or who to trust had me holding my breath and I loved it. I really like the character development and getting to know each character a bit more was interesting and fun. I liked the friendships and enjoyed seeing Drayden and the gang go through every ordeal. Again, I won’t get into details and ruin the fun for you, but this is a series you won’t want to miss.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can honestly say that this series is turning out to be so awesome that it's most likely going to my favorite list. The Expedition is well-written, action-packed, emotional, and a terrific sequel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and author in exchange for a fair and honest review and for participating in the Blog Tour hosted by TLC Book Tours. All thoughts and opinion are my own.

The initiation was child’s play compared to the new quest bestowed on the four champions!

Shortly after completing the initiation, Drayden, Catrice, Sidney, and Charlie are presented with a new quest: to travel to the City of Boston and represent New America in an attempt to seek aid. New America is failing as battery life is coming to an end and wind turbines desperately need maintenance. Food production has been shortened and people are now being randomly exiled so that the colony as a whole can survive. Unfortunately, this shortens the time that Drayden has available to look into his mom’s exile. Trying to bargain for more time or a change of expedition has only frustrated their superiors to the point they have been threatened with execution and their families exiled. Fortunately, they have a team of elite guardians with them for protection on the way to Boston. But once out of New America, things don’t go quite as the group had planned. Could there be different missions between them and the guardians? Will Boston even still exist? Why hasn’t there been talk about their future once they return?

This book picks up right where the first one left off. Four scared and confused teenagers with no idea what awaits them are thrown into yet another scenario of seemingly ensured failure. We get to see how the world has developed post confluence outside of the New America walls and to say the least, humanity has gone back to being fairly primitive, but there are a few surprises along the way. This installment focuses on the teens continued survival as well as a challenge against the guardians. A consistent element was that of Drayden’s insecurity. It smeared throughout all the pages of the book, especially his relationship with Catrice. I would really like to know what is going through Catrice’s head most of the time but may never get to see that. I would like to see the next installment with alternating points of view.

If you enjoy this style of book, then you will likely enjoy this one as well. There is some mild language throughout, but nothing that is not expected in today’s society.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions express within are my own.

We pick up just after the first book ends (and what an ending it was!), and ready for a life in the lap of...wait, luxury? I thought everyone was equal? What gives? Yeah, well surprise surprise, some DO get to have their cake and eat it too.

Drayden wants to uncover the truth behind his mother's exile (but can he handle the truth?), Sidney is ready to welcome her sister with open arms, Charlie wants to join the Guardians asap, and Catrice is sorting through her feelings at having reached her goal while making some friends along the way. Oh, and that love triangle of sorts from book one, totally carries over to book two, just with a new player in the mix. Anywho, they should be living the dream now...only this Initiation wasn't just to get them into the Bureau. The powers that be used it as a means to find the newest members of their special team set to solve New America's energy and food problems with an outreach program into the outside world. A noble cause to save them all...and if you believe that, I've got some swampland to sell you too.

Needless to say, after the trials and tribulations (and losses!) they faced in book one, this is going to be anything but a walk in the park. In fact, it's gonna be a walk through a landmine filled he** with secret agendas, dangerous forces, and revelations you won't see coming. The bonds they forged will be put to the test, while you're kept guessing as who exactly is safe to put your trust in. Then. just when you think everything is settling down, one of their own may be delivered a death sentence....but I shan't say whom, or why, or how; that's for readers to know, and you to discover!

Book two leaves you with much more knowledge than you had initially, and an uncertain future on the horizon...which of course means book three will have a spot on the old wish list whenever it reaches publication because really, WHAT WILL HAPPEN? My only low point for the second title lays with Drayden and his wishy-washy infatuation for the two love interests in his life. Otherwise, you're pretty golden.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley (thank you!) in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my thoughts in any way.

I have read and loved the first book in the series, The Initiation, which was spectacular in multiple aspects (you can read my review here) so I was so excited to read this next one! I was also a bit skeptical at first since I barely remember the nitty-gritty about the previous book due to my severe forgetfulness, but I pushed through, hoping for the best. Fortunately, everything came back to me and I got to really enjoy this book.

The Expedition was a fast-paced book that is equal parts action and strategics. This allowed the group of privates to maximize their own individual strengths during their mission, and I loved seeing, in the little things, how they have grown closer compared to the first book.

I still very much liked Drayden as a character. If I were to think about an expedition, I’d probably immediately think that physical strength is a prerequisite for undertaking such. I had my doubts as to how Drayden might cope in the expedition, yet it proved to be unnecessary. What Drayden lacked in physical strength, he made up for in quick thinking, wit and intelligence. And frankly, I admire the latter far more than the former.

The challenges that the group faced in the expedition were much more different and difficult than the ones in the initiation. In this books, the struggles that the privates experience were much more crucial since they deal with unexpected troubles now, in the part of their world they’ve never set foot on. So seeing them all work together, and contribute each their own skills for their collective objective was really invigorating since, as you can tell, I’ve really grown attached to this group of brave kids.

And although I did kinda foresee one aspect in the book that is supposed to be shellshocking, I did doubt myself more times than I would care to admit. Thus, the book really has some unexpected twists and turns that would make you second guess yourself multiple times.

But despite all those, I still ticked off a star from my rating since I was not keen on how the sentences in dialogues sometimes run waaaaay too long, as if they’re each doing monologues. Aside from that though, I think my mood contributed a lot on this decision as well since I was pretty distracted with life when I read this.

Overall, if I were to pick this book up some other time, when I really am in the mood for a post-apocalyptic-ish adventure, this really would have the potential of earning a 5-star rating from me. I highly recommend this series, especially if you’re a fan of the genre. I can’t wait for the next book!

I will echo what a lot of readers had to say, it's hard to put down. You absolutely have to read the first book for anything in this one to make sense and certainly to understand the characters. I also have to say, the author really started a BIG story here and I was kind of worried that it would prove to maybe be too big and some pieces would get lost in trying to explain different elements but so far, that isn't the case. It feels like there are almost two stories moving here, New America is struggling and that's fine but then you have the Guardians kind of doing their own thing and you know it's all going to come together but at what end?

Given the relatively dark nature of this book, I really appreciate the author's efforts to break through that with humor sprinkled in. I love how realistic it feels, like any and all of this could burst into our reality at any time, I love how once again- it's teenagers saving the day. It always makes me laugh when adults shake their fist at the millennials and younger because I want to ask, haven't you ever read a dystopian novel? The old people go first, man. It's the kids who make it in the end. Every time. Ha!

My favorite parts of a book is dialogue, I want to feel like I'm eavesdropping on a conversation. Unfortunately, I didn't get my fix on that so much here and what we do have is kind of... teenagerish? I know it's teenagers so we aren't going to get sophisticated monologues or plans but it kind of feels immature and cheesy? I can't even say it's terrible but just some parts kind of annoyed me and made it hard to believe.

Overall though? I'm giving this a good 4 stars. It's a pretty quick read and if you're a fan of YA Dystopia books you are going to really enjoy these. I feel like these are the movies that are fun to watch at theaters because we always go in with at "what if" and "that would never happen" mindset simultaneously. Bottom line, this would make for a pretty cool movie.

**I received a copy of this book off Netgalley and a physical copy from the author in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.**
I am actually disappointed in myself that I didn't read this book sooner because it was so good! Did it have its problems? Of course, not every book is perfect, but I really enjoyed this one almost as much as the first one.
Anyone who knows me knows that I love dystopian books. They've always been some of my favorite reads and this series has joined that list. I love the characters and how they develop into better people. The main character though still has a lot to work on. He still seems pretty weak to me, but there's still a whole book to prove himself and I'm hoping he does.
The world building is amazing. The first book focuses on the world building of New America and the history of the Convergence. The second book opens up to the outside world and the people who actually survived the Convergence. It also starts to unwrap the web of lies that the Bureau has spun about the outside world, so we get even more back ground there. Towards the very end of the book, we also get a little bit of information on the other parts of civilization and how they thrived after the Convergence. I'm hoping we get more of that history in book three.
The one thing I can't stand, about any dystopian book (not just this one) is the ROMANCE! A romance always has to spring up and almost takes over the story and I don't like that. And a lot of the time, it's a love triangle which I dislike even more. And both are present in this story. Is it going to stop me from enjoying it? No. Do I still hate it? Oh, absolutely.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this series and can't wait to pick up the last book. I would definitely recommend it, especially to those who really enjoyed the Hunger Games series. I do, however, which the romance would go away, but I will live.

The Expedition.
🍃
Thank you so much @realchrisbabu for sending the review copy.
🍃
The Expedition is sequel of The Initiation and I was sure that I'll come to love it like I did the first part. And I wasn't let down. The Expedition is an adventure filled book which had me gripped with excitement till the very last page. The story of Drayden left me in a daze and now I cannot wait for the next part.
🍃
Just when Drayden and the gang thought the trauma of Initiation was over, a new horror was awaiting them at the Palace. Surviving the Initiation wasn't easy and when Premier Holst briefed time about the next task that they have to undertake, the teenagers are left in anguish. Drayden struggles to find out the truth about his mother's exile and picks up few clues. His relationship with Catrice turns to be fragile than ever. Will Drayden survive the Expedition?
🍃
When the group is pushed to leave New America and move to Boston in search of life outside their city, they are met with many shocking sights. Drayden, Catrice, Sidney and Charlie who are barely adults are accompanied by four guardians who are ruthless as they expected. When things turn sour on their Expedition and as they split up with the guardians, Drayden assumes the role of the leader as he guides them to the destination.
🍃
This book talks about their journey to Boston as they discover life and people outside their premises. They are faced with a harsh reality that the New America hid from their people. Pick up this book to know whether Drayden and others reach Boston or not. Will they survive the deadly Aeru virus and beat the guardians to the destination or will they perish on the way? I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping there's a next part to it. The characters are exceptionally written and felt quite real. The plot strengthened from the very first chapter.
🍃
I would rate this book 5/5.

I recieved a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Okay so there was a little issue when I requested this book. Neither Netgalley or goodreads mentioned this was in a series, I double checked because the description looked a little unusual for a stand alone. I emailed this observation to the author and he was very nice and mentioned that he knew about the problem and was doing his best to get it fixed, which it now has been :).

On to the review, since I did not read the first one I am avoiding certain areas since it would be unfair. So the characters were good and I felt like the relationships were strong. I wasn't the biggest fan of Drayden though, he was rash and put his feelings above the fate of his city. He also seemed to have an attitude, like he should be in charge, he's menat to be 16 but was acting more like a cross between an adult and a spoilt brat.

The writing was very good, I liked the style very much, there were not any mistakes, it was well edited. The story was easy to follow and interesting, kept me guessing as to what was going to come next. I do feel it was a little repetative though. If you have read the first one in the series then I highly recommend this one.

This book was ridiculous, and not the good kind of ridiculous.... the way are you wearing socks with flip-flops kind of ridiculous.

Dude needed to pick a different trope.
Sure, who doesn't like a love triangle??? But we already dealt with that during book 1. It was basically the first book in terms of character development/characteristics/actions. Instead of having a 2 girl 1 boy love triangle it was throughout most of the book a 2 boy 1 girl love triangle, and then the last like 3 chapters we were back to the love triangle between Catrice and Sidney.

Honestly I was just annoyed the entire time. Because it was a book pretty much about this love triangle. And everything EVERYTHING they did have to have a plan. Every couple of pages you read "So what should we do now?" "What's the plan?"

... for being the smartest people around, they were pretty dumb. Not everything needs to become a plan. You don't need to work out how you're going to walk and who will be the line leader.

It was just, well... it was bland.

My response to how is The Expedition would be: Ehh.
