Rate this book
What if you were eleven and discovered a place where animals long-thought to be extinct still existed? What would you do?

When Spinner McPherson and Reglan hike deep into Echo Valley, the last thing they have on their minds is finding a huge mysterious cave that is home to creatures that haven't wandered the Earth for many many years; in some cases, millions of years. But that is exactly what they do. They discover Underland--a place like no other on Earth!

RETURN TO UNDERLAND is a children's adventure tale and is approximately 25,000 words or ninety pages. A middle grade book.

Alan Nayes is the author of the spellbinding sci-fi apocalyptic series, The Resurrection Trilogy (GARGOYLES, PLAGUE, RESURRECTION), and the giant cat thriller, SMILODON.

Should be in every school library.

Spinner does not fit in with the other kids in his school. He can't even hit a baseball. He is more interested in fossils. His favorite past time is to explore Dweller Meadow. His only friends are his yellow lab, Otter, and neighbor girl, Reglan, who join him in his search for fossils. When they find strange tracks they follow them to a place called Underland. Thus begins the adventure.

Author, Alan Nayes, takes his readers into the ancient and dangerous world of dinosaur, and other extinct creatures.

This book not only brings excitement to young readers, it also teaches about prehistoric times, the study of paleontology, extinct creatures such as archaeopteryx, Smilodon fatalis, dinosaurs, and more. This book should be in every mid grade library. As a teacher, I would recommend this book to parents who are looking for educational, yet exciting, books for their mid grade children.

Spinner and Reglan are best friends. Spinner collects fossils and Reglan wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. Their love of animals, living or extinct, creates a strong bond.
Finally, when he turns eleven, Spinner is allowed to venture beyong the meadow close to home, but only if Reglan and his dog Otter are with him. They discover the tracks of a wierd creature and follow them to a stream where they notice the tracks have changed. They look almost human!
I just love the heck out of this book. Alan creates such a believable world and fills it with amazing creatures. Once the action starts, it never slows down. With Spinner and Reglan, the author perfectly captures the preciousness of young friendship and trust.
This is a quick read that leaves you smiling. recommended for all ages.
