Gwal Mudra is the meditation that was designed by LordKrishna himself when DwaparYug was about to end. He knew that the modern mind was going to be chaotic so he lay down the foundation of things that were going to be important to the new man. How do I know about this? Because in one of my past lives I was the disciple of LordKrishna. How I met him and what I learned from him is written in this book. I practiced JaatiSmarn,a meditation technique practiced and propagated by Lord Buddha and Lord Mahaveer for more than fifteen years. This particular mediation technique is used to visit your past lives. Khushwant Singh is a motivation and management expert by profession, but above all he is a mystic, a self realized man. He travels around the globe to teach meditation to the people who are in search of peace in this maddening world. Gwal Mudra is his eighth book after Simple Ways to Make More Money, Unanswered Prayers, Untold Love Stories from India, The Struggle of a Superwoman, My Journey with Enlightened Masters, Pizza Religion and his latest best seller Confessions of the Virgin Brides.
Khushwant Singh, (Punjabi: ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, Hindi: खुशवंत सिंह) born on 2 February 1915 in Hadali, Undivided India, (now a part of Pakistan), was a prominent Indian novelist and journalist. My Review : As not a big fan of self-help(motivating) book I couldn't put down this book! Because it is just not a self-motivational book, it will change the way you look at life for surely. Generally self-help or motivational books have so many examples to explain one thing and that is very tiresome. But this book describes so many things but in single example. Though this book is a mythology but it deals with the problems of today's world and its solutions. The problems in our relationship, in our behavior, the jealousy between two friends even the problem when we talk with a person and miss his words because something else was going on our mind and then we ask him awkredly to repeat what he was saying. .this problem is also discussed in this book. Lord Krishna's sermon and his interections with his disciples answer those questions. The mystery behind his sixteen thousand wives is also described in this book. But as a reader we might think is this possible to know your past life and we might doubt him.. So he has already cleared in introduction that -' So let's start this book with two points of view, first everything that I am saying is nothing but the creation of my wild and wicked mind and second, what if everything I am saying is nothing but bare truth? Let me help you on this. Gautam Buddha once said, "Doubt everything, then doubt the doubt ".
Gwal Mudra is an elaborated version of the first chapter of “My journey with the enlightened masters” by the Author. Author mentions about Jaati Smarn, a meditation technique practiced to visit our past lives. The previous book author mentioned how he had a rebirth as a girl and had faced hardships in a brothel then how the author finally met Lord Krishna and his life changed.
This book elaborates on the life where he used to live near Vrindavan. How an ordinary person became rich to turning into an immensely rich and ruthless businessman. His life and growing greediness , the sins he committed , death. Rebirth as a girl. Life from her childhood and how she ended up in a brothel with her childhood best friend Saanwali. How she came to know about Lord Krishna , how she and her friends managed to escape from the brothel and Enightened master Lord Krishna’s teachings.
Author tells about the three stages from where human beings take action:-
Unconscious Level (totally absent minded) Conscious Level ( concentration level) Super Conscious level(Enlightened or self-realized state)
Lord Krishna rules out the notion of a self made man.
“We should have a close look at our life and be thankful towards everyone who have contributed in our life, there is nothing like a self made man, it’s a lie.”
He tells that our actions change our destiny and our intentions have the power to influence our life forever.
The main teachings include “Gwal Mudra” , a meditation that will help us to remain sane. Will put out greed and aggression from our lives. There are various stages to start practicing it:-
First Stage-Body Level Second Stage- Mind Level Third Stage- Emotional Level
The teachings and interactions given in the book are really very enlightening and helpful. Author also gives his perception about the nature of Hindu Gods/Deities and the objectification of women in various instances related to them. I also agree with those because it is true to a great extent. The story of Lord Ram, Brahma, Gautam rishi-Ahalya are solid examples given by the author.
The language is simple and understandable. I liked this more than the previous one because of its more elaborated content and teachings. Recommeneded
Book Review: Gwal Mudra (The Real Teachings of Lord Krishna) By Khushwant Singh
Rating:5/5
Review:
👉Gwal Mudra by Khushwant Singh is an extraordinary exploration of spiritual wisdom, self-discovery, and divine connection. The book revolves around a meditation technique said to have been created by Lord Krishna at the end of Dwapar Yug—a practice designed to prepare humanity for the challenges of a restless, distracted age. The author shares this teaching not merely as a concept, but as a lived experience, claiming to have been a disciple of Lord Krishna in one of his past lives. Through years of dedicated Jaati Smarn meditation, he reconnects with those ancient memories, uncovering insights that form the foundation of this book.
👉Singh presents Gwal Mudra not as mythology, but as a timeless spiritual science. The narrative is both mystical and practical, blending scriptural depth with modern-day relevance. Each chapter moves gracefully from philosophy to practice, offering readers an understanding of how to harmonize mind, body, and soul. The meditation itself is divided into stages that encourage self-awareness, gratitude, and the transcendence of ego. The author’s tone remains sincere throughout, making profound ideas accessible to anyone seeking peace amid life’s growing chaos.
👉One of the strongest aspects of the book is its ability to connect ancient teachings to the modern world. Singh does not confine spirituality to temples or rituals; he shows how it can be practiced in daily living. His insights into ego, humility, and emotional balance are remarkably relatable. He reminds readers that true wisdom begins when we acknowledge our dependence on others and show gratitude for every experience that shapes us. These reflections make Gwal Mudra not just a manual for meditation but a guide for living consciously.
👉Stylistically, the book is written in simple yet evocative language. It avoids unnecessary complexity while retaining the depth and mystery of the subject. The author’s personal experiences, his devotion to truth, and his desire to share peace with the world give the text a genuine emotional weight.
Gwal Mudra by Khushwant Singh is a contemplative work that deliberately moves away from conventional narrative realism to explore spirituality through ethical reflection. Blending myth, memory, and moral philosophy, the book treats human lives as symbolic frameworks through which questions of karma, desire, and spiritual awakening are examined.
The narrator–protagonist occupies the center of this inquiry as a morally fluid consciousness. His progression from ambition and material possession to loss, illness, and surrender articulates the text’s sustained critique of ego-driven existence. Rather than being developed as a psychologically intricate character, he functions as a representative human figure, allowing the narrative to stage philosophical debates on accountability and rebirth within a cyclical structure.
The supporting characters reinforce this ethical landscape. Sarbati embodies attachment and moral ambiguity, while Swarn Ganika unsettles rigid notions of purity and sin, exposing social hypocrisy through quiet resilience. In contrast, Saanwali represents emotional balance and acceptance, offering an ethical counterpoint to desire-led relationships. Savita, associated with birth and illness, symbolizes continuity, responsibility, and the consequences of past actions.
Lord Krishna emerges as the most significant presence, not as a mythic hero but as a philosophical interlocutor. His dialogues challenge human arrogance, materialism, and institutionalized belief, bridging mythological wisdom with contemporary dilemmas. Figures such as Swami Devprakash further illuminate the divide between formal religion and lived spirituality, while Radha, Rukmini, and Meera appear as archetypal expressions of devotion.
On the whole ,the author privileges moral inquiry over narrative immersion. Though this limits psychological depth, it lends the text its distinctive philosophical resonance, making it a reflective and intellectually engaging read for those inclined toward spiritual literature.
Gwal Mudra. ~ Thank you for the review copy @eccentric_mystic :) ~ In his previous book 'My journey with the enlightened masters', the author spoke about his encounter with wise men and mystics in his past life. Gwal Mudra seems more like a continuation to the previous book. But in this book, he focussed on only one master. Krishna. ~ The author narrates a story of his previous life where he was a ruthless landlord who went by name Janak Pratap from Baldeo. He got greedy as he acquired more land and treated his people with no mercy. This resulted in his end where people stoned him to death by finally deciding to take matters into their own hands. The author then goes ahead and brings into light about his rebirth as a girl who gets kidnapped by pimps. She's sold to a brothel and her life takes the darkest turn with each passing day. ~ When she eventually escapes and finds Krishna, she finds solace. He soothes her with his words and gives her a new purpose. Rest of the book talks about various teachings laid out by Krishna in guiding people towards the righteous path. He talks about forgiveness, ego, love, kindness and also anger. He focusses on a form of meditation called Gwal Mudra which is proved to be divine and helps people in leading a long and healthy life. He explains the importance of meditation by giving examples and by narrating various stories. ~ This is my third read by the author and I must admit that he has done a tremendous job in explaining such a complex topic with ease. Religion, faith, morality are often difficult subjects to be discussed about and yet in all three of his books, he has mastered the art of narrating gracefully. This book being an extended part of his previous work, was quite similar and hence predictable too. But the teachings and concept should be applauded. ~ I would rate this book 3.8/4.
I wasn't sure what to expect from *Gwal Mudra* by Mystic Khushwant Singh. Past lives? A chat with Krishna? It sounded like one of those wild self-help books that promise enlightenment between coffee breaks. But after a hectic week of deadlines and doom-scrolling, I cracked it open on a quiet Sunday, desperate for something to quiet the noise in my head.
Right away, Khushwant Singh pulls you in with his story: fifteen years of Jaati Smarn meditation, the kind Buddha and Mahavira swore by, unlocking memories from his time as Krishna's disciple in the Dwapar Yug. No fluff—he describes meeting the blue-skinned lord in a sun-baked grove, the air thick with jasmine and the weight of coming chaos. Krishna, seeing our future frenzy, gifts this mudra as a lifeline: a four-stage practice to tame the body, mind, and ego. The first three steps are simple enough for beginners—breathing tricks, chakra tweaks, gratitude rituals that made me pause mid-sip of tea and actually thank the barista who messed up my order.
What hooked me was how real it felt. Singh weaves in Hindu myths without preaching, ties them to modern messes like toxic relationships and burnout. He talks ego like it's that annoying coworker who steals your lunch, and the remedies? Practical, no guru robes required. One line stuck: "There's no self-made man—it's a lie. Thank everyone who shaped you, even the pains." Oof. Made me rethink my grudges.
Sure, the past-life claims might make skeptics snort—fair enough, I raised an eyebrow too. And some chakra bits repeat if you're already into yoga. But the heart lands: in a world spinning faster than ever, here's a tool from an old blueprint for peace.
If you're chasing calm without the cult vibe, this is your sign. I tried the first stage last night and slept like a rock. Four and a half stars—grateful for the nudge.
'Gwal Mudra' is a compilation of author's past stories, which he visited by practicing 'Jaati Smarn' for 15 years. In his first mentioned life, he is born as 'Janak Pratap' in a village named Baldeo that is in Vrindavan. Janak married a beautiful Aryan girl named Samta in his youthful days and their family is known as one of the affluent families of town. The story develops with Janak raping several traders' wives and daughters. His life ended as villagers stoned him to death on his wife's order. In another life, he came to life after 300 years as a girl in Vrindavan itself. She along with her friend Saanwali got kidnapped and were sold at a brothel. In this life, she paid for her sins she committed in her previous life as Janak Pratap. Many wealthy people bought(and won) her at auction and spent lustful nights. One day she came to Lord Krishna's palace and moved on with her past life. Krishna knew all about her and guided her to enlightenment. Lord Krishna, while delivering a sermon, told that there is only one thing that can save the modern man(the man of Kalyug) and coming generations in this Yug, that is Gwal Mudra. 'Gwal Mudra' is a meditation practice that was started by Lord Krishna himself for helping future generations to remain sane(or free from any mental disorders). What is actually Gwal Mudra? How does it save contemporary man? How is it performed? Get answers to all these questions by ordering your copies now!! The only thing which I would suggest the readers is that to read such masterpiece, one has to be liberal enough to welcome this brand new information presented in the book. Overall, this book was very informative for me and it is recommended to all the people who have a keen interest in meditation, mythology and fresh information.

Gwal Mudra: The Real Teachings of Lord Krishna isn’t your usual spiritual book—it’s a refreshing guide for anyone who wants to understand their own mind and live more mindfully. What makes it special is how easily it mixes ancient wisdom with modern psychology, giving you ideas that actually make sense in everyday life.
The chapter that touched me most was about the “Three Stages from where Humans Work.” The way the author explains the “Unconscious Level” and the busy “monkey mind” feels so real. When you read examples like how our thoughts jump from a turban to a car and then to an airplane, you can’t help but smile—and realize how often your mind does the same thing. It’s simple, true, and instantly eye-opening.
I also liked how practical Gwal Mudra is. Its three-step method—connecting body, mind, and emotions—feels easy to follow and very effective. The first step builds stamina through physical exercises, while the next uses singing from the heart to release hidden emotions. It’s not complicated or hard to understand; it’s something you can actually feel helping you.
What makes this book truly stand out is how it talks about awareness—not as something far away, but as something you can practice every day. It deals with real problems like stress, worry, and sleeplessness with honesty and care. If you’re looking for a book that helps you connect with yourself in a simple yet powerful way, Gwal Mudra is the one. It’s easy to read, deeply inspiring, and sure to leave a lasting impact.
Gwal Mudra: The Real Teachings of Lord Krishna is a deeply reflective book that blends spirituality, self-awareness, and meditation in a way that feels personal. This is my second book by the author, and I absolutely love the way he writes — he has a beautiful way of turning complex ideas into simple, easy-to-understand thoughts. Instead of treating Krishna’s teachings as abstract ideas, the book makes them feel simple, relatable, and easy to apply in daily life. It's a short yet interesting read which kept me hooked throughout.. The book draws inspiration from the wisdom of Lord Krishna while keeping the message relevant to modern life. It’s not just about spirituality as a concept, but about living with more awareness, calmness, and purpose.
Author Khushwant Singh's writing flows so naturally that you find yourself completely immersed without even noticing how quickly the pages are turning. The book skillfully explores the three levels of human consciousness where a person takes action. • Unconscious Level (totally absent minded) - It’s a level where a person is physically awakened but his mind is constantly running somewhere else. • Conscious Level (concentration level) - It’s a level where a person is totally concentrating on the task he is assigned to do, but is not conscious of himself. • Super Conscious Level (Self realized state) - In this state a person remain in the double arrowed consciousness all the time, that is the only work of mediations. Overall, This makes the book approachable even for readers who are new to spiritual reading.
Gwal Mudra is a fascinating and spiritually enriching book that delves into the meditation technique said to be designed by Lord Krishna himself as Dwapar Yug came to an end. The author presents this ancient practice as a way to calm the restless modern mind, blending mythological wisdom with contemporary spiritual understanding. This book serves as a continuation of the author’s previous work, #MyJourneyWithTheEnlightenedMasters, expanding a single chapter from that book into a detailed and immersive narrative. While readers familiar with the earlier book may find parts repetitive, Gwal Mudra offers deeper insights, more clarity, and a refined explanation of spiritual concepts. The highlight of the book is undoubtedly the Gwal Mudra meditation technique, it’s described in a way that feels both powerful and practical, inspiring readers to try it themselves. The author also explores thought-provoking perspectives on religion, divinity, and self-realization. While some opinions may be controversial, they encourage readers to think deeply and approach spirituality with openness and maturity. The language is simple and accessible, making complex ideas easy to grasp. Despite minor grammatical errors, the writing remains bold and engaging. Overall, Gwal Mudra is a meaningful, enlightening read that offers timeless lessons from Lord Krishna’s teachings and invites readers toward spiritual growth and inner balance.
Gwal Mudra: The Real Teachings of Lord Krishna written by Khushwant Singh is a spiritually enriching book that delves into the profound teachings of Lord Krishna through the lens of Gwal Mudra, a meditation technique aimed at achieving physical and spiritual wellbeing. Khushwant Singh narrates his personal experience of meeting Lord Krishna and shares insights on Hindu mythology, the 7 chakras, relationships, ego management, and the significance of meditation.
The book explores three levels of human consciousness - Unconscious, Conscious, and Super Conscious - and discusses Lord Krishna's relationships with Radha, Rukmini, and Meera, highlighting three types of love. Meera's love is ranked as the highest, offering readers a unique perspective on devotion and relationships.
Through Gwal Mudra's four stages, the book addresses issues like greed, aggression, and mental disorders, emphasizing the importance of meditation for spiritual growth. The narrative is philosophical and introspective, inviting readers to ponder themes of truth, knowledge, and the eternal soul (Atman).

Overall Gwal Mudra: The Real Teachings of Lord Krishna is a thought-provoking and spiritually nourishing read, perfect for those seeking guidance on meditation, relationships, and the path to enlightenment.
Lord Krishna - I really can't describe how beautiful he is. And now I also learn that why so many people love Krishna more than any one.
My most favourite lines from this book are: "If a person is not willing to fix the problem in a relation, it simply means that person doesn't love, yes he may be caring and romantic sometimes but he never loved.
"Real love believes in fixing things if things go wrong, often we look at other person's past as a sin, but a real lover has out grown everything he/she will break the shackles of sin and virtues, he/she simply accepts the way the other person is, he knows sometimes we make bad choices or sometimes destiny is fixing karmas".
About the book, Author written it in a easy way so that any one can understand the flow. I gained a lot about the meditation, trust, loyalty, love, why love is important, what is love, how to not being a greedy person, how to believe in God and trust yourself and a lot.
And I also learnt Why Krishna loved Radha and Meera more than Rukmani, what impressed Krishna to love Radha and how he felt loved when he loved by Radha. . .
I'll read this book each and every time when I feel good or bad. Because it helps me to balance the good mood and bad mood.
