I'm an old soul that accomplished an unusual goal: publish 12 books in 12 months. I did it in 11 because I'm the white rabbit of time (so my children tell me).

I live in Idaho, work in another world, and thrive on the written word. By the time you read this, I'll working with new characters to turn upside down (or inside out), spin more plots to weave and plant subplots to harvest.

I have plans for many other books in various stages of development and must get cracking instead of writing this...are you still reading? Good. Keep it up - and thanks.

Billed as a prequel to the series Chest of Souls, this is no mere short story or novella but a rather longish full-length book; not only that but it’s one of five such books that are even longer than most of the books in the series itself that now number nine.

From the description:

In the tatted lace of legend, there were Five Creators:

The Tree: Ammon of Rozan-Steading
The Pillar: Jaydren of Stones Fist
The Keeper: Soline the Water-witch
The Weaver: Revaya the would-be Queen
The Blaze: Vael, the Betrayer

Ammon of Rozan-Steading exists to bring change.
While serving as a Guard at the Fortress, he met the other four Creators and hopes to free them.

Jaydren of Stones Fist was forced to kill his family.
He has plans to escape, but can’t do it alone.

Soline doesn't remember where she came from.
When she was three, her world was colored by pain that never ended. Her goal: return to the sea, no matter the cost.

Revaya was told she would be Queen someday,
but only after a journey she’d never take by herself.

Vael was carried to the Fortress by harpies,
monstrous winged creatures that abduct those with ‘talent'.
He plans to burn whatever stands in his way.

These Five are already legends.
Inside them, their power is rising.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The book is told by an unknown narrator from Sharian Ammon’s point of view. Ammon is massive and strong appearing as a tree to those whose tapping gives them the sight. He has power over plant life and the ability to manipulate living things. He is a shape shifter who can turn into a horse.

In this land horses are horses but cows are moos, dogs-woofs, hens-clucks, sheep-baas, dogs-woofs.

Trainers control macs by means of a strangling leather collar. Macs possess special powers to manipulate their elements: earth-metals, air-wind, water, and fire.

Dangers are at every hand but Ammon in all this is presented as a good guy with noble purpose. He is searching out allies in his effort to make life better for all.

Let us not forget scaly-skinned harpies with leathern or feathered wings who bring macs to the fortress where they are imprisoned and trained.

The reader slowly learns of this fantasy nightmare world as our protagonist Ammon does.

I have half a dozen or more other books including library borrows but I can’t drag myself away from thie one.

A few notes:

Woof pups get to choose their masters.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Fortress/school has sunk to the exercise of power over the vulnerable, the macs reduced to what amounts to cock fights by their trainers who seem to get off at inflicting cruelty.

The entire process of gathering gifted children smacks of Canada’s Residential School for Natives and the abuse that went on there: starvation, physical cruelty, and sexual abuse.

Unmentioned in the table of contents at the end of the book is an alphabetical list of characters:

Ammon is sent by his father to become a guard at the Fortress, where all the Macs are kept. While there, Ammon learns the truth about the Fortress and also a lot more about the Macs, all of whom are element manipulators, and their trainers who are just as much prisoners as the Macs.

This book kept me so enthralled I was annoyed when I had to put it down to go to work. And I have purchased the next book as I want to see what happens next.

Amazingly fantastical read

I chose this rating because this book is worth it. The characters are solid and bold, I love the fact that it has both heroes and heroine's, the mix of the Harpies, magic wielder's and don't forget Spark are well melded together each with a big part to play. Enjoy reading x

Thought that I may hate it but I loved it

I thought that this might be just be another Lord of the Rings ripoff. But I was wrong. Well developed characters with complex developments. Very good plot lines. I very much enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series

Very creative fantasy

The story kept my interest. The world building was fantastic. I thought there would start to be some romance that never developed. It showed a rough primitive life style. And fantastic characters.
