It’s been a little bit since I re-entered R.M. Garino’s epic fantasy series, Chaos of Souls, but man, starting “Angels of Perdition” reminded me just how much I loved Garino’s writing. The immense world he’s crafted, and the complex political and familial intrigues he weaves into his stories, alongside some really wonderful action sequences, are just as well-crafted as I remember from the first book. This book is a chunky boy, but I never felt like it was undeserving of its length, like the author was unnecessarily waxing poetic. In fact, this book could have been another 50-100 pages longer and I wouldn’t have minded (and, in fact, would have welcomed it). But as this is the second book in the series, don’t read this review if you haven’t at least read the first book, as there are bound to be mild spoilers, but really, don’t let the size of these books keep you at arm’s length. This is a beautiful, epic NA fantasy that I still full-heartedly recommend to everyone and anyone who loves a good multiple POV, and intriguing fantasy series.

It did take me a little bit to get back into the series as there are a lot of characters and I couldn’t remember everyone immediately (and that pesky glossary of terms is till at the back of the book, grr), but once I got settled in the world again, I flew through this book. I loved seeing Angus and Arielle step fully into their relationship, loved seeing the Immortals remain such a tight nit group even though it meant defying orders at almost every opportunity they got, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery of who and what is driving the increase in darkness and danger around these elfy-angels. I love how Garino sets up his action, how it spreads over several chapters and POV’s so you can really see the conflict from multiple angles and from different perspectives. I got into such a flow with those chapters that hours would slip by without me ever noticing. Garino’s writing is a perfect balance between crisp and poetic, you have no trouble understanding what’s happening and still get swept up in the scene as if you were actually there. I also enjoyed seeing more of how the Sur affects those who go into it, though I didn’t always love how those who returned were treated.

The Sur is an evil place and those who return aren’t the same after—I liked that! But those who returned got this twisted form of therapy, which felt too much like it was a commentary on therapy in our world, and I got a little squirmy around that. Thankfully, the book doesn’t focus terribly long on that, and I liked that the character that suffered got a chance to atone. Also, keep in mind that the events mentioned in the synopsis don’t really start coming into play until about 70% into the story. That’s not to say that the start of the book is bad or slow, there’s a lot of set up that needs to get done so it doesn’t drag (except occasionally when Angus nerds out on his equations), but the meat of the plot takes a bit to get into position and then when all chaos begins to erupt it all just… ended. Seriously, there are cliffhangers and then there are books that just end and this story fell somewhere in between the two, and left me a little confused and upset all at once.

The author makes wonderfully complex characters that are flawed and courageous, working through their shortcomings and picking the path of their choosing, refusing to let others dictate their lives. Angus and Arielle’s Pride maintained their integrity and I loved them just as much this time as I did in the previous book, even if they frustrated me at times because they wouldn’t take even a single moment to listen to the adults when they tell them not to rush into danger. I loved seeing more of the threat within this supposedly idyllic city, as well as the threat looming outside their gates. I still have mixed feelings about the Elder, however, who is telling us the story of Angus and Arielle 300 years after the events of this book happened. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and the only reason I am giving this novel 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the abrupt cliffhanger at the end just when things felt like they were reaching an apex. It makes me wonder what will be left to explore in the 3rd book, and makes me all the more impatient to read the final book in this trilogy! I highly recommend this series to all my epic fantasy friends, and thanks to the author for sending me a copy for an honest review!

I was contacted by R.M. Garino to review his book Angels of Perdition, which is the second book in his Chaos of Souls series. I will have to admit though, I read this book before I read The Gates of Golorath. At first, I didn’t understand all the terms, but as the story developed, I was easily able to determine what they meant. Now, having read the first book, it all makes sense and everything was explained perfectly for the reader.
Now for the actual review. R.M. Garino does a great job with building on the characters that we learn about in book 1, and develops them even more, making them more likable (or unlikable, whatever the case may be). The world building and culture is also developed more as the story progresses, which is a must for me as a reader.
I also liked how both of the books in R.M. Garino’s Chaos of Souls series has the underlining messages of choosing your own path, and not to follow others just because.
I thoroughly enjoyed these books and would recommend them to anyone who likes epic, high fantasy. I am looking forward to reading future books in the series and learning more about these characters.

Suspense and chaos.

There are a lot of fights in this story, both physical and emotional as the characters that we were introduced to in book one must fight to keep their futures safe. Arielle and Angus have to really come into their own in this story, doing what they can to try and be doing despite Arielle being fated to marry another angel.

Overall, the author does a fantastic job of worldbuilding, creating characters and places that are written with flowing imagery. The characterization is especially well done with the emphasis on character flaws throughout the piece. Plenty of questions I had from book one were answered, but this story left me with a few new ones. I’ll be keeping my eye out for the next book in the series.

If you like fantasy books then this one is definitely for you! This is the second book in a series and picks up right where the first book left off. I have to say, I love these characters. I felt like I was coming home when I started reading this book. I really loved how all of the characters developed throughout the book as well. Certain characters got more of a back story as well which cast them in a different light (still not a Logan fan though) and made me see them in a different way.

One of the other things that I love about this book (and the first one) is how easy they are to read. I feel like with some fantasy books (cough LOTR cough) the flowery language takes away from the story. These books are easy to read and understand.

I'm a big fan of this series and I cannot wait to read the next one. I would highly recommend this book to anyone but especially if you're a fan of really great fantasy books!

This is the second book in R. M. Garino's Chaos of Souls series. I read the first one several weeks ago, and I'm glad I kept the notes I wrote back then, because many of the same characters are in this book as well. It's important for anyone who reads this book, as well as the first one, to understand the different types of characters, as well as the hierarchy within the world this author has created, in order to get the gist of how each character interacts, and how that interaction will play out through the clues the author drops here and there throughout the story.

The novel explores the continuing saga of Arielle and Angus as they embark on their married life following a grueling battleground with members of their group (called a Pride) to earn their place in the world. Arielle had been pledged to marry Logan, another warrior, but she and Angus had been soul mates when they were younger, then separated. They reunited when they came back to the place known as the Gates as they went for their training (this happened in the first book), and their unity became apparent. Logan was off being a warrior; his sister, Gwen, watched during her training while Arielle and Angus recognized that they belonged together.

Just when everything looks as if it's calming down, when they're going to get married and have their wedding feast, everything goes a bit haywire. All sorts of different characters emerge as Angus and Arielle combine their souls into one. They confront all sorts of obstacles and gauntlets thrown their way. Nothing's ever easy for this pair.

I am so impressed with the author's imaginative way of creating the world for this (and the first) novel. The attention to detail is impeccable and leaves nothing out. The writing is thick and surprising, with something new happening in every chapter.

The novel brings many characters to face evil doers who use deceit and cruelty to achieve their goals. The author has expertly crafted this world that I would never want to have lived in. It's complex and cruel. The hierarchy and expectations of the ruling class, as well as those with powers of telepathy and magic, are unpredictable and often involve deceit. The way the author weaves this story together works well, however, and I would recommend this book to people who enjoy dystopian and other-worldly-type books.

My only suggestion is that I think the glossary explaining some of the author's terminology should come at the beginning of the novel rather than the end. I discovered that when reading the first novel, and, therefore, was able to follow the second one more easily. This author is exceptionally talented in conceptualizing and bringing together a series of novels that are complex and interesting.

Although I never though I would read this genre, I am now looking forward to reading the next novel in this series.

Garino comes back stronger in book #2. Yes, I loved Gates, but I adore Angels. Now that we have the characters and the world building settled, the bonds between teammates are truly tested to the breaking point. And some do break.

While Angus and Ariel get closer, and the differences between them grow more obvious, this never degenerates into a sloppy love-romance storyline but a friendship-love-comrade story. This I greatly appreciate. You get glimmers of where they will have problems as their relationship evolves which is a major thread throughout this series.

You definitely need to read The Gates of Golorath before this one, or you'll be lost. Garino writes High Fantasy and he does it well, but you have to give some time as there is a lot of complexity time to be understood and absorbed. An engrossing epic fantasy read from start to explore.

Angels of Perdition is the second book in the Chaos of Souls series written by R. M. Garino. Following straight on from Gates of Golorath (You can read my review of that book here), Angels of Perdition lands us back at the Gates following the Menace trial that took place at the end of Gates of Golorath. New conflicts are arising and old ones are continuing to develop in new and interesting ways as Arielle and Angus are now under threat from the E’ine and their Soul Chamber.

The story is beautifully written containing a good mixture of fantastical elements, conflicts, and a little bit of sweet romance. A great combination for this genre of book. The narrative is intriguing and smooth, making it easy to follow despite the multiple elements and emerging storylines and character arcs that were included.

The Chaos of Souls series has an interesting setup as the main story is told as a campfire story 300 years after the events of the book. Interestingly, Garino would occasionally bring the reader out of this story and back to the “Present Day” as the Elder finishes his story for the night. With such a fast-paced and intriguing story, I felt the same eagerness the Extipana (a race of humans that the Elder was protecting) did for him to continue with the story, especially when the transitions were so effectively abrupt.

The characters are incredibly well-written in this book and Garino is good at making you feel a full range of emotions towards certain characters. I never thought I would be able to say that I actually feel sorry for Logan in this book and it’s been rare that I have felt so much anguish for a character as I did for Arielle at the end of the book. A character introduced in this book, Pinar, was particularly interesting due to the ambiguity behind her motives. It was interesting to see where she went in this story. But let’s not forget the amazing relationships between the main characters in this book. I loved the Pride and their relationships among each other. Although I still felt frustration towards them at times – because damn it, can ya’ll just listen to people sometimes and not go rushing into everything? – they were always fun to read about. It was great that Garino still thought about the teenage/young adult conflicts that were to occur despite the larger story arc. The small petty arguments and interactions were always entertaining.

In terms of style, the book was eloquently written and full of intense, visual action sequences. It was very easy to imagine the action happening right in front of me and it was easy to get lost in the book (occasionally almost missing my stop to work!). The ending was surprisingly abrupt, which Garino explains in the author’s note and it has now left me lusting for more. I’m excited for the third book!

The world that Garino has created with these books is absolutely fantastic. The history and lore that he has created and the inclusion of characters’ sin’dels (their auras) are truly intriguing. I’m eager to learn more! I’m also keen to learn more about Reven Marthal, where the mages train and study. A building inside a huge tree is probably my perfect setting, now that I think about it. Garino has also done well to uphold the tension surrounding what exactly the Sur is and what it contains. As something that can taint people and drive them to madness, it’s definitely not something you would want to find yourself trapped in. But that still hasn’t curved my curiosity of the place.

Overall, I really enjoyed Angels of Perdition and there were many occasions when I struggled to stop reading it. It was fast-paced, exciting, and an incredibly satisfying read. A great book which I would definitely recommend.

WOW! What a thrilling read this was! It was jammed pack with action scenes and loaaaaads of new information. R.M. Garino’s writing is so beautiful, he knows how to make you laugh, cry, be angry, and excited, and I felt all of these throughout reading this book. His writing is also so descriptive that I felt like there was a movie playing in my head the whole time I was reading, I could see everything coming to life. I recommend to everyone I meet to read these stories and any other books that come on the future. I’m excited to read his two novellas coming out, I have to know what happened to Logan and his time in the Sur!

!!!SPOILERS AHEAD BEWARE!!!

My emotions were thrown around while reading this book. When Logan and Angus we’re fighting after the pledging ceremony and Angus died, I had to put the book down because I was crying so hard. When I could finally see through the tears and started reading on, Arielle was able to bring Angus back to life after they merged and then I was back to being happy for them.

Then we learn that Logan was still contaminated from the Sur and I start to feel bad for him. His character development has probably been my favorite in this book. He goes from being his usual arrogant self from the first book, and he then finally learn how to deal with his own thoughts and emotions and with people. He’s almost becoming kind.

Towards the end of the book when the pride decided to go after the e’ine and find Gwen’s sister I got a little angry. I was angry because they bases their decision mostly on the assumption they would be cast out by the court martial so it didn’t matter anymore if they decided to follow orders or not. It made me angry because they can’t make decisions like that when they’re not 100% of the outcome. What if the court martial decided to pardon them?? But they didn’t take that into consideration. Of course I read on and we find out so much more information that we wouldn’t have learned if the pride decided to stay in Reven Marthal, so I see why the story had to go in that direction.

Garino then leaves us sobbing at the end and with a huge cliffhanger! I’m excited to read his two novellas coming out before the third book to the series comes out. I will be sad when it’s over but I’m so happy that I got to go on this journey with him and the pride.

I was so excited when Angels of Perdition was released and I got to join Arielle and Angus’ world once again! Book Two was a different yet perhaps even more wonderful experience than Book One.

This time, I knew where I was and who each of the characters were right from the start. I was comfortable with the language and background information, all of which made diving right into the story that much easier. It felt like catching up with friends I’d been missing.

Angels of Perdition continues a fantastic narrative while also introducing more character development. Those we had already met became more complete; for example getting to know Gwen and Logan’s Family background more intimately helped to enhance Book Two and offer a new perspective on Book One. Similarly, we become closer with the Matriarch as a person and not only a mysterious leader.

And if character development doesn’t thrill you the way it does me, well don’t worry I’m sure you’ll love all the action! More fantastic battles featuring our beloved “immortals,” more mystery and adventure as our favorites break the rules and discover new things about their world. Of course for the romantics like me, there is also the continued love story of Angus and Arielle which pulls at your heartstrings beyond your expectations.

Do yourself a favor and make reading Angels of Perdition one of your New Year’s Resolutions!

Garino has continued to build up this world and story in wonderful ways. It expands everything we know from the first book–giving us more about the characters and their traditions. The Gates of Galorath was a great start to a series, but this second book felt like where the true story started coming forth.

Everything is very well developed–the plot, the characters, the history of their people and world. I really enjoyed getting to know the different members of the Pride more. However, Arielle and Angus continue to be my favorite. They had me smiling and laughing at times, and then in near tears at others. Their constant banter, while still obviously loving each other, makes me so happy. I love it.

I’m very curious as to the part of the story that takes place in the future. There are chapters where it is 300 years later, and Angus is telling the story. He’s not with the others and has mentioned being betrayed by Arielle. So, I’m nervous about getting to that. I have a feeling this series is going to break my heart… more than this book already did.

If you like fantasy, I recommend this series. It is very well written, with beautiful descriptions and a new world to fall into. I very much enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to see how the story continues.

So much pain and emotions in this story. The pain goes beyond what the characters get when fighting--and there are plenty of battles to keep you reading. This is emotional pain--from loss, from new understandings, and so much more. The characters have changed, grown with the trials that they've suffered. As Arielle and Angus learn, their childhoods--as well as the childhoods of the others--are gone and the seriousness of their future is at stake. You'll be heartbroken at the end when you discover what "the Elder" telling the story has been hinting at that changed Arielle. But you'll have to wait until the next book to discover exactly what this means for her.

What you'll get in this book: Lots and lots of exciting events; more in-depth understanding of the world Arielle, Angus, and their friends live in; well-written prose that immerses you in the story; and hours and hours of entertainment that will sweep you away into a world of "angels" and "demons" like one you've never experienced before.

Hoped for Answers, but enjoyed the ride

This is an excellent continuation of the first book. Massive and detailed. Despite its size, I was able to read it quickly. The author’s style is easy to read and immerses you. Fantasy lovers you will enjoy the middle of this saga! I liked seeing how the characters progressed and matured. I also enjoyed how some were redeemed and some answers were given. However, I hate middle books that leave you hanging. If I knew for sure book 3 (coming soon) would bring the saga to a satisfying close, the rating would be 5 stars. That said, I can’t wait for book 3!

This series has me captivated. With all the manipulations and hidden agendas, it is hard to decide who is good and who is evil. Arielle is a stickler for following the rules and Angus is a troublemaker. Their relationship is an adventure in itself. Then Logan, who is flawed in the simplest manner, has such a unexpected reaction to everything. Will his jealousy over their union destroy him or will he be able to overcome it and keep his honor?

They all will soon find out that the history they have been taught is not entirely complete nor true. Who will survive?
Do the ends ever justify the means?

Love it all! Can't wait for the next installment!

I loved this second book in The Gates of Golorath series, telling about the following adventures of Arielke's and Angus' "Pride", their friends and team. After their spectacular performance in the Menace, I order to evolve in their training, new and more dangerous adventures await them, mixed with their typical mischief and insubordination to orders, which gets them into trouble-again.
The characters are very well developed, as well as the plot, and, even though it is a very long book, it had very few slow parts.
It has been a very enjoyable read.

I won this book on Goodreads for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from this author and hopefully about these characters. I was completely entranced in the telling of this story and by the characters as well. I highly recommend this book to those that like a bit of romance, a bit of intrigue and electric storytelling. Fasten in this is a quick paced story and will keep you on the edge until the last page is read.

The epic adventure continues

This is truly epic fantasy at its finest. I fell into the first book and the second kept its grip on me. I love Angus and Arielle's story. The intricacy of the world building and how the tale unfolds is captivating. Tolkien or Brooks fans, this is your next great reading fix!

This book is worth so much more than the $1 I paid for it!
I read the first book about a year ago, I believe, so it's a little hard for me to compare them too closely, but Arielle and Angus act much differently together than they did in the first book, from what I do remember. The best description I have would be like an old married couple, which... I suppose makes sense with the idea of them being true souls and essentially a perfect match for each other, it just felt a little odd to me with how young they are and how little time they've actually spent together. It made me lose interest a little bit in them, but it didn't matter that much to me with everything else that was going on. Just like with the first book, this was an excellent fantasy story that kept me interested the whole time! I loved all of the new elements that Garino added to the story, with Logan and the new character his journey brought in, and the theory of everything starting over every so often until the true souls are whole again so that everyone can go "home", to name a few examples... It did a nice job of not exactly answering every question from the first book, but leading you towards an answer while also providing new questions. This world is really interesting to me and I still absolutely love it, but I have to say the ending of this one was particularly painful! I will continue to actively watch for the next book to come out so I can find out where this goes!
