Yona suspects something strange is going on between the Fire Tribe and the Kai Empire. She and the crew leave Kai to further investigate matters.

Not a lot happens in this volume. It feels like for the most part, Yona and her crew are just waiting around. This volume was mainly build up for the next one. As for the side characters, it’s always been pretty obvious Kang Su-jin is vying for the throne, so I was interested in seeing his plans come to fruition. We also get to spend time with the first son, Kyo-ga, and it was nice seeing the person Tae-jun is always referring to. I was also happy to spend a bit of time back with Tae-jun, he’s come such a long way since we first met him, and he and his followers are adorable, especially Heuk-chi. I’m also glad to see this volume tying into the previous Su-won arc, and that Su-won’s efforts with the Earth Tribe appear to have paid off. I also just love Yoon so much during this reread, his interactions with Yona are so endearing, and she really brings out his softer more vulnerable side. I do have to say though, that something I’ve never really liked about Yona is how reckless she is. It’s always bothered me that she’s essentially putting the lives of the others in danger without ever really thinking things through.

As for that bonus chapter, poor Jaeha, the way he reluctantly is always looking out for everyone, it makes him my favourite dragon.

This is a review of volumes 11-12 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

This is a short story arc that begins in Yona of the Dawn vol 11, builds up in vol 12, leaving us on a cliffhanger!! We leave the fire tribe lands for Kai, a neighboring kingdom that has some effect on their country's economy. We learn a little of their relation to one another and its quite fascinating. It not a terribly tense volume as far as plot goes but it really ups the tensions between Yona and Hak in the romance department and I was quite excited to see that happening. Yona has an opportunity to be stirred to something resembling jealousy without going their yet.

The fact romance was a big part of Yona of the Dawn vol 11 was a good direction to go for me. I love how Mizuho Kusanagi interjects a major theme to center the more humdrum but necessary kingdom building plot around. In the previous couple volumes its been Lord Tae-jun and his growth into a decent human being and here its Hak taking a step toward Yona and making her heart pound (for some mysterious reason, lol)! I do love that Yun had a goal also and how Yona played a huge part in that arc.

In Yona of the Dawn vol 12 the story gets more serious as we see Yona and company have stumbled on some serious business between the fire tribe and the country of Kai. We get a ton of Su-won here as he brings his plans for dealing with this rebellion into action. I really loved how Yona is starting to come into her own as a leader. She makes decisions and we really are seeing her female empowerment in action. We learn about Kang Kyo-ga and what kind of man he is compared to his brother (Lord Tae-jun). I enjoy these glimpses into the side characters. And he is used well as the central core to the rebellion part of the volume.

We get to see Yona, Su-won and Hak interactions in both volumes and I LOVED it. I adored the view of the past in vol 11 and felt like it really established why Hak was equally as cut up as Yona about Su-won. To follow this with the romance advancements are so smart because now we understand why Hak hesitates even now. It was so organic how the group worked together to brainstorm what was going on, so, so good... The bonus stories about Gija and Jaeha are super funny and I cried reading about Gija’s father!! This is why I love Yona of the Dawn... These are genuine people who have lived, loved, thought, been betrayed, and broken hearted.

The art for the past portion of vol 11 is so, so good! To miniaturize our main characters is just too, too cute. I fell in love with each and every page, lol. I wasn't a fan of Mizuho Kusanagi's art style at first (i.e. the first 2 volumes) but the more I read the more I love it and I think that has to do with the confidence with which it is drawn. The world is so sure. The characters are real and we are able to see their strengths and weaknesses come off the page through the art!

Yona of the Dawn vol 11-12 is a great new arc in the series. Once the dragons were gathered it was hard to imagine what would be happening next?! I enjoyed exploring the fire tribe but to get some serious plot at this point in the story was perfect! Yona, Hak and Su-won are pursuing what they feel is best for their country and people and its a glorious interlocking adventure.

The past arc in volume 11 really blew me away. I just loved it so much. I'm not sure you really understood how Hak felt about Su-won up to this point. You knew they were childhood friends and were in close contact with one another but not much else. We really needed to understand the dimensions to their relationship, especially since Hak decided to reach out to Yona as more than her most loyal servant.

And we learn there is so much between this self-made emperor and the man who is loyal to the one slain. Now we feel the tragedy in this situation. It's about more than a girl with a crush who really needs to get over it already.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

While I know the fighting is pivotal to this volume (and probably more volumes), I’m not looking forward to it. *nervous laughter*

My favorite parts were Tae-Jun making a bold stand (his character growth is everything) and the second-to-last bonus chapter because I loved learning more about Gija. (Though if I had been drinking any water reading that chapter, pretty sure I would have spit it out because so many of the guys are buff and did NOT expect that. Granted they would be but was totally caught off guard. LOL!) The final bonus chapter just totally wrecked me. *sobs*

The back cover is AWESOME (as well as the opening page illustration)! It was cool seeing the dragons work together and how they use all their unique talents and gifts that aid not only just their crew, but others too.

I do admire the choice Yona makes in this volume as well as seeing others see that Su-won is not carefree as many believe. Since the mangaka mentioned this has a tie-in Su-won arc, I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of him!

The Happy Hungry Bunch is back and things are looking weird between the Fire Tribe (does anyone else accidentally call them “the Fire Nation,” or is that just me and my weird brain? 😂) and Sen Province. What exactly is going on, and can Yona and her friends stop it?

This volume was more on the political end of things then mainly everyone running around solving (or causing, bwahaha) problems, which was really interesting as we see more of the Fire Tribe and how they are as a people and leadership. Tae-Jun continues to grow, and the Bunch’s banter and fun continue to abound among all the seriousness surrounding the slowly approaching war.

My fave parts were definitely Gija freaking out over spiders in the tunnel (and Ao eating them! 🤣), and Hak encouraging Yona to stand up for their kingdom as the rightful ruler, no matter their own personal feelings on the matter—I LOVED that part SO. MUCH. 🥰🥰 Plus how they pieced together exactly what was going on with the two nations—definitely something I want to look back on for my own stories.

Also, I ADORED the two bonus chapters of these characters and their growing relationships with each other, not to mention more of Gija’s backstory that made me cry and love this character even more. 😭☺️

Content: suggestive comments, mild swearing, some smoking and implied drinking in one place, violence and blood (nothing over PG-13), The Happy Hungry Bunch go to some hot springs to bathe and are naked but you see nothing beyond if someone was wearing a bikini, a man inflicts wounds on a baby’s back (we don’t see the action just the wounds then the scars left behind)

While I know its important to establish that Yona is the People's Princess, I felt like the last couple of volumes were extremely slow pacing-wise. This volume finally forces Yona and the Gang to do something big and I'm looking forward to seeing how this new development plays out. I still feel like there's something off with the pacing though. Maybe its because I have no idea where this story is going. Quite honestly, I'm not entirely sure the author does either. When Yona was trying to collect all of the dragons, there was at least a clear mission that I could follow. Now, with all of our main characters assembled, no one has any idea what to do next and it makes the story very hurky-jerky. Here's hoping that stuff gets smoothed out in future books.

While the fire tribe aims for Soowon's head, I was more preoccupied by Kija's history. He was too young to lose his father... and too young to be blamed for his continued weakening. Why the dragons' powers bring such misfortune, I am unsure... Did the author intend to give the characters a terrible curse in order to force them into heroes that grew up in bitter childhood until Yona bought them to the light? Or is there something other than that the author want to imply...?

The plot really picked up in this one! Things are happening with a lot of characters, and I need to know how they'll all come together!

The side story with the hot springs (Why is there always a hot springs story in manga?😆) was slightly awkward, yet hilarious! I'm not always sure how I feel about Jaeha, but his concern for Gija was so sweet. And those "beauty exercises"... *snort*

I loved seeing the flashback of Gija as a child, even if it was a little heartbreaking. 😭

Another great volume that focuses more on political intrigue this time, expanding the scope of the world. None of the politics and battles in this volume ended up surprising me at all, but it’s all driving the story forward at a good pace. Cannot wait to see Suwon’s side of the lead up to this upcoming battle.

There’s also a great special chapter that lightens the mood and explores Gija’s past a bit more. Plus Jaeha gets some depth!

Tae-Jun is really awesome in this vol. he always was the weak, useless clown, but now he's changing, becoming a great character who can confront an army in honor to protect his people..
also Zeno is too cute!! I wonder when his dragon powers will shown up..

“Yona’s dance from last night was, how should I put it? It was a sword dance reminiscent of a tragic love.”

I was not ready for this volume.

One of the most capturing things about this series is how even though it is a shojo there is so much more going on that sometimes it feels like anything but its genre. It certainly can be epic when it wants to be.

That being said, I find myself very confused right now because of the way everything developed. If I was already conflicted about my feelings towards Soo-won now that feeling has multiplied ten-fold and I find myself mirroring Yona's faces as I feel like I feel the exact same way as she is. It makes an already unsettling situation all that much more complicated and nerve-wracking.

Seeing Tae-jun, however, was the absolute highlight of this volume.

“Let’s go. I am King Il’s daughter, Yona. I won’t let them do as they please to this country.”
