Hive Mind #3

Hurricane

Rate this book
Being a telepath means there is always a new challenge.

Eighteen-year-old Amber is the youngest of the five telepaths who protect the hundred million citizens of one of the great hive cities of twenty-sixth century Earth. Her job is hunting down criminals before they commit their crimes, but this time a simple case leads on to something far bigger.

This is a case where Amber’s team have to face the unknown and break all the rules they usually follow, while Amber has extra burdens she can’t share with anyone. She has a personal mystery to solve, and questions she wants answered, but curiosity is a dangerous trait in a telepath.

Hurricane is the third book in the Hive Mind series. Further books are planned to follow.

This book starts immediately after the last one finishes and concludes the emergency call that ended that book. Again this was a decent read, but I’m beginning to feel that Amber isn’t really developing.
Also the over protectiveness was becoming slightly irritating in the previous book, but in this one it’s just annoying. For example, at one point they are deciding if Amber should read the minds of a group of suspects from the Sea Farm. Before doing this they think Amber should try reading the mind of somebody who lives at the Farm. They decide on a young girl who was already in the Hive after being treated in the hospital for serious injuries. So how did they do this?
They had the perfectly innocent girl taken from the hospital and locked in a holding cell (even though she was claustrophobic), they guarded it with three hulking great men from the Strike squad and only then did they allow Amber to read her from two floors away. Overkill or what?
Part of my problem with the story was that for most of the book Amber wasn’t assertive enough and Lucas seemed to be taking over. The author also had the team going backwards and forwards over the same ground, dragging up the same arguments time and time again.
Towards the end of the book there were a few glimpses that Amber was becoming more forceful and perhaps there is hope for the next book.
If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.

I've read all three books written in this series so far. Janet Edwards continues to be one of my favorite authors. I love her Earth Girl series which I read a few years ago and am so happy to have found this series. It's in a completely different world than the Earth Girl series, but no less interesting.

Strong characterization is one of the hallmarks of Edwards' writing. I like that I feel I "know" so many of her characters. Of course, Amber is the main character in these books and I have the most insight into her and her thoughts. She's not always happy in her position as one of the five telepaths of the Hive. However, she's fully aware of her importance to the Hive and that she must put aside any ambivalence and do her job. She's slowly growing into her role and slowly coming to terms with her new life.

Another of Edwards' strengths is her strong world building. The Hive is such an interesting place and in each book we find out a little more about this world. In this book we discover that not only are there other Hives throughout the world, but there is also a small community living outside Amber's Hive known as the sea farm. People at the sea farm may live their entire lives Outside. This is a mind blowing idea for Amber and her team. Amber and some of her team have been Outside in previous books and have gotten more used to working out there, if necessary, but none of them can imagine wanting to live Outside the Hive. The idea some people actually want to live Outside is very strange to them all. Crimes are taking place at the sea farm and since Amber and her team are the only telepath unit that can work Outside they have to travel to sea farm.

I like that these books are not only science fiction, but also adventure stories and mysteries. I'm looking forward to learning more about this world and maybe why most people live in Hives. And more adventures with Amber and her team.

The dialogue is still exposition-heavy robot sentences no actual human being would ever utter, but I don't care! I love this series! I can't wait for the next one!

12-28-21 I still love this series, apparently well enough to reread it in times of stress. I never reread books, so that says a lot.

1-18-2026 The dialogue may not be the strongest point of this series, but the characters always feel real, alive and distinct. Situations are complex without feeling contrived. I don't mind the dialogue because of that. (People sure do groan a lot in this world, though.)

Really enjoying these books and this world. They go outside and learn quite a bit about the Hive and it's make up and the reason for some of the rules. Good stuff!

[Addition after reread: This book is even better than I remembered, and I gave it 5 stars the first time round]

Short Version: This is another great SF detective novel from Janet Edwards. I speak as a reader of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as well as Isaac Asimov. In my opinion this series is turning into one of the best in the last ten years. I strongly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys detective stories or SF.

Longer (spoiler free) thoughts: This book feels a little different to the others in the series. Book 2 doubled down on the detective work and in my opinion was one of the best written detective stories I’ve ever read, it was a very edge of the seat ride which really tested the little grey cells. This story still has a good murder-mystery with more than one twist - but I really felt that the “mystery” this time was more the world itself, a mystery which I really appreciated. Ms Edwards has given us enough glimpses of her “Hive Future” to allow the reader to know that there is an awful lot more going on than we (or the characters) know. This book doesn’t blow the lid off it at all, but it does deepen and widen our knowledge of the setting in a way that has left me both admiring Ms Edwards as a storyteller, and desperate for the next book in the series.

As always I really enjoyed spending time with Amber and the others, characters that you care about and who had a good deal of development in this excellent book.

I have enjoyed everything that Ms Edwards has written, she has definitely entered my personal “Author Pantheon” alongside Anne McCaffrey, Isaac Asimov, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and select others. I await her next release, perched on the edge of my seat.

As with all Edwards’ books, we see the world through the viewpoint of the young protagonist, so we only know what she knows, therefore I was delighted that Hurricane gives us more information about the worldbuilding. It appears – this will doubtless come as a great shock to you – that the leaders of the Hive aren’t completely honest with their citizens and keep secret some important details about how the society functions.

In this interesting instalment, Amber and her team find themselves solving a major crime outside the Hive where she learns a lot more about a hitherto hidden aspect of the workings of the Hive. Obviously, I’m not going to reveal those aspects as I’d be straying into Spoiler territory, but a lot more things made sense regarding the longterm viability of the society which wasn’t bothering me, but had concerned Himself. Alongside my increased understanding of this intriguing post-apocalyptic setup, Edwards also delivers another tension-filled crime adventure featuring a series of malicious attacks that trip into something far darker and more harmful. It is Amber’s task to discover who the murderer is by reading the culprit’s intention – far harder when everyone’s mental landscape differs so markedly from what she’s used to. And there are potentially dire consequences if she cannot find the perpetrator, so there’s plenty at stake.

I’ve enjoyed following Amber’s story from the beginning and though it is only eight months since the events of the first book, she has significantly matured – hardly surprising given the responsibility she is shouldering. There is also an intriguing sub-plot surrounding one of the other telepaths, which gives us an insight into what can happen when things go wrong.

This society is under enormous pressure, given that the population density is very high and the authorities are keen for everyone to feel a reasonable degree of happiness – if they didn’t, then mayhem would quickly ensue. I’ve found myself thinking a lot about this book since I’ve finished reading it – always a sure sign that it’s something a bit special that’s delivered above and beyond the engrossing story that held me throughout. Highly recommended for fans of enjoyable YA science fiction, this is the best of the series so far.

3 1/2 stars. Better than the previous one, and nice to get to be strolling around outside again. I liked the wave machines and the little girl/seagull rescue, that was cute.

Again, it has the weird vibes thing. Amber keeps questioning why the Hive keeps information so segregated, which leads to repeatedly cropping up issues.
Hives seem hella trigger happy on coming up with reasons not to trade with each other, considering how utterly dependent on at least some forms of trade they must be for their continued survival.
Amber reads things about people having misunderstandings, but doesn't intervene (which is ... fine, I guess? What you'd have to do in that situation, since they don't know you're a nosy? But it's still an odd tonal note).
Also apparently their psych likes to corner hot boys in elevator shafts.

Just so many odd notes that I can't decide if they're a nod at realism - no-one is perfect, no system is perfect, and in the end they decide that the good of the Hive is the good of all... Or if maybe the author secretly wants to break out into full dystopia but is trying to pull her hand on it.

Still waiting for the shoe to drop, effectively. But it's a happy ending nonetheless, so I'll take it and carry on since my friend already has the sequel on her kindle anyway.

Wow. This ate SO HARD. The way everything was planned out so well and the way all the inconsistencies of the environment just looped back was so cool.

I also especially adore how Janet Edwards writes relationships because wow the give and take between Amber and Lucas is illustrated so beautifully and so healthily🥹

Also the way she writes about the psychological diversity of her worlds is so interesting. Like the irrational fears and belief systems that propagate from this world setting.

She also does this in her Portal Future series as well in the way the off-worlders panic when there's a portal shutdown. Here it's in the way Hive people react to the Outside and the sea farm people react to the Hive and its collective implications. It's something you don't normally see thought out in YA world-building.

The target for this book is also crazy insane because there's no way anyone's guessing that(maybe I'm just not as smart) but wow wth. If you're reading this before the book I challenge you to try to guess the target because I can guarantee you won't catch it.

Lols if you do tho pls come back here and comment so I can congratulate you on your awesomeness🙌

This is one of my favourite books which I have now read and re-read so many times that if I owned a paperback rather than a digital copy, it would be well-worn from rereadings.
Amber, one of five vitally needed true telepaths, has barely recovered from her previous case when she is asked to take responsibility for an area unlike any indide the Hive. The mission is vital, the surroundings unfamiliar, and the target she hunts is unlike any she's encountered before.
This book is engrossing, surprising, and endlessly compelling. Amber's journey and character development is incredible to read, and I love how each book builds on subtle details from the last. Edwards has created an incredible world populated with characters I can't seem to tear myself away from.

DNF - PG 151

Why?

I might attempt this book again at a later date (in other words, when I'm in a better mood) but right now I cannot take the coddling and the heavy protagonist centered morality I'm having to deal with. (Oh, gee, none here can do any wrong. ... And Amber probably needs to be slapped, TBH, with my feelings from her from the last book.)

The fact is, it is a huge difference between what Amber usually does (quickly scan past innocent minds to find the one that is interested in/has hurt people) and what she's doing now (doing a deep dive into an innocent mind that is already frightened and panicking with her team encouraging - nay, demanding that this innocent is treated like a suspect). Telepathy already skirts morality. This is just terrible.

Hurricane had a big change of setting, moving the entire unit out to the sea farm. There’s an entirely new host of problems the unit has to deal with including being thrust into a shockingly different society. We see several previously mentioned concepts developed, most notably the sea farm itself.

Hurricane delves deeper into Joint Hive Treaty Enforcement and the reasons behind their seemingly odd rules and requirements. We also get an introduction to Morton and share Amber’s conflicting feelings about him as a person and him as a telepath.

We along with Amber learn deeply troubling information about the sea farm and why telepaths can’t meet. It’s particularly interesting exploring the nuances of telepathy. There are quite a few startling revelations in Hurricane.

The plot is more twisty than ever with complex case that breaks all the rules. The identity of the final target is profoundly shocking, I never in a million years saw it coming. There are other surprises as well but not as mind altering.

As a final point, I found the entire pretense of Lucas being a pretentious and fearsome figure positively hilarious. I could just see the tactical team all smothering laughs at his act. It took me ages to stop laughing myself. Another incredibly written addition to the hive future.

"Amber goes to the sea farm and is shook."
The whole plot summed up in one sentence, and yet, you have NO IDEA what a ride this was!

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH!
I'm still amazed by the fact how many new things Janet Edwards can thing off, in a world we think we already know so much about.
And the answer to the looming question, then and there coming up in the previous books, had me like SHOOK. I have to admit though, that I did expect something similar to happen - not in that extreme, but still, I nearly guessed right^^
So many new and interesting characters were introduced - and I'm pretty sure, at least one of them will return in future books.
Things I really did hope and expect to happen did actually happen ö.ö

I'm already so excited for book four - I'm sure it will happen, I don't know when, but it will :D
