Adrienne Kress is a Toronto born actor and author who loves to play make-believe. She also loves hot chocolate. And cheese. Not necessarily together.

2016 saw the release of HATTER MADIGAN: Ghost in the H.A.T.B.O.X., an exciting collaboration with NY Times bestselling author Frank Beddor (set in the same world as his Looking Glass Wars YA books). And April 2017 she releases the first book in her new Middle Grade series: THE EXPLORERS - The Door in the Alley (Delacorte, Random House).

October 2016 her essay appeared alongside work by the likes of Margaret Atwood and Mariko Tamaki in the non-fiction anthology THE SECRET LOVES OF GEEK GIRLS (Dark Horse).

She is also the author of two other children's novels: ALEX AND THE IRONIC GENTLEMAN and TIMOTHY AND THE DRAGON'S GATE (Scholastic). And also the YA novels, THE FRIDAY SOCIETY (Steampunk Adventure from Dial Penguin, 2012) and OUTCAST (a quirky YA paranormal romance from Diversion Books, 2013).

Some more info about Adrienne: she is a theatre graduate of the Univeristy of Toronto and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in the UK. Published around the world, ALEX was featured in the New York Post as a "Post Potter Pick," as well as on the CBS early show. It won the Heart of Hawick Children's Book Award in the UK and was nominated for the Red Cedar. The sequel, TIMOTHY, was nominated for the Audie, Red Cedar and Manitoba Young Readers Choice Awards, and was recently optioned for film. THE FRIDAY SOCIETY was nominated for a Quill Award, and has been optioned for television.

Oh, and the German title for ALEX is:

The Quest For the Kid (The Explorers #3) by Adrienne Kress, 489 pages. Delacorte (Random), 2019. $17

Content: G (mild danger)

BUYING ADVISORY: EL - NO

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

Evie and Sebastian are on the hunt for all of the Filipendulous Five. Even though Sebastian doesn’t want to be n this journey at all, but he stays for Evie’s sake. Not all of the Five want to be found and at least one of them is in a terrible situation from which they can’t seem to escape.

I just saw a blurb on the back of this book that says “...Fans of a Series of Unfortunate Events will be drawn to this.” Now I get the increase of adventurous books that are also trying to be absurd. It’s not working.

WOW!! WHAT A CONCLUSION TO THIS INCREDIBLE SERIES!! I love all of these characters so much and Sebastion and Evie are the best characters!! I can just see them growing up and starting their own explorations and explorer's society together and getting married.
But hey!! I love this book series!!
I also know that this is something we deal with in our world but I don't like how she made one of the characters lesbian and thankfully she does not go into that to much but I just did not think it was appropriate to add in this book series.
Overall, I loved this series!! The second book is still my fav. but this had an amazing ending!!
Bravo!! Bravo! This story was so creative!!! A GREAT READ!! :)
Totally recommend this series!!!

The idea for this series was a good one, but the long adventures for seemingly no real reason are offputting (The whole book #2 about the K-pop group - why? I get that it was part of the journey but it seemed endless and like it was going somewhere rather than being a place to escape from). Plot twist was only so-so.

For a while there, I really, truly, was afraid that the author would do the unthinkable, and make this trilogy end as a tragedy. No one would see it coming, and it'd def. have shock value, but I'd be mad AF. Thankfully, I worried over nothing. In a sense, while I generally won't want to casually comment on "someone's death being well-deserved", perhaps the moral of the series is really straightforwardly presented: Don't be a selfish and shitty person. >:3

This last installment is jam-packed with plot, one thing right after the other, at some point making me forget what the big picture was because I got sidetracked by what was randomly happening, but ultimately, the take is something towards my liking.

There's a lot of outlandish and unrealistic stuff (seriously, being kidnapped for so many days without letting them know you were safe, realistically would cause loving parents to have a full-blown meltdown), but overall, it was entertaining.

My favorite part was when the four remaining members of the Filipendulous Five got to rejoin the Explorer's Society, and everyone was pretty much happy in the end. My least favorite part was when the monster attacked the submarine and both Alistair and Sebastian got injured, and only Sebastian survived with the help of the only remaining water from the waterfall.

The last 200 pages of this one were good, but the first 300 pages were just really random hijinks (which maybe kids would like, but it felt just too random).
I think overall this series was only "okay" for me. It can be funny, and there is some adventure, but in the middle there are events that make the reader say "wait, what?" Or at least it was that way for me.

This book was really good. I really loved how Evie grew as a character. The book was so exciting and made me racing through the pages until the end.
I recommend this to anyone who likes adventure, creepy plots, and more. Note: This is the 3rd book in the series.

It was so hard to get into this. I gave up a third of the way into the book and skipped to the end. I wanted to know if she found her grandpa🤷🏾‍♀️. I won't spoil it for you. Maybe someone else will enjoy this finale to the trilogy but I could have went without it.

Love the narrative voice, which has been consistently delightful throughout the series. I love the way the author describes Evie and Sebastian's feelings, the way she is inside their heads. It could have been about 150 pages shorter, but I still enjoyed the ride!

Such a great and fun series! I read the third book and immediately went back and read the whole series from start to finish. I love the characters and the writing keeps you interested! Sad it's over!

I was so excited to read this and now disappointed that it's over, especially since it's the end of the series. I loved all of the characters and the stories were filled with adventure. It did not end how I thought it would, but I'm still very satisfied with the whole thing. Without allowing myself to be too sad that it's over, I've started Book 1 again to now read the whole series from start to finish. And I can't wait for the audiobook, since the first two were done so well!
