Book Challenge 2023: #59 God's To-Do List: 103 Ways to Be an Angel and Do God's Work on Earth
Paperback, from a closet at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom

I knocked this little nibble back after the morning service of Yom Kippur at Temple earlier this week. It was a presentation of well-loved stories and familiar settings, instructing us on how to continue the work that God started WayBackWhen. There was a lot of overlap between this book and a fitness program I'm currently participating in. Both encourage us to write lists of our intentions, to recruit others to help keep us on track, to return to the basics of what motivates us. On those fronts, I feel like I didn't really learn anything new. I know how to be a good Jew, and I know how and why exercise is important to my health and wellness. As I've said to my kids more times than I can count, "It's not the knowing, dear, it's the doing." Reading this book was, I suppose, a fine way for me to Do Jew, 22 hours into a Yom Kippur fast. And when I finished, I put it back on the shelf. Perhaps another congregant will find it helpful next year.

Filled with vignettes and suggestions to be the best person you can be, mindfully, thoughtfully, and lovingly. Again, Dr, Wolfson instructs on the traditions, stories and rituals of the Jewish faith. Loved it!

Um. The rabbi gave this to everyone at High Holiday services. I was being a good congregant. Now I'm being a good GoodReader, recording it despite my embarassment. I might have to put it away before I ... whoops ... join a megatemple. Mr. Rabbi! This is Charlottesville! There's a plug from Rick Warren on the back! What's wrong with this picture?!

And yes. Yes I did go out and do a couple of the things on the list. In fairness to everyone, it's pop religion, not actual religion, so it's not like many of the to-dos are, you know, demanding or inconvenient. I'm either a better person in spite of myself or I'm just another twit who's been fooled into believing that doing what you were going to do anyway is righteous.
