A masterfully written, subterranean horror thriller, HARVEST DEEP takes you on an edge-of-your-seat journey with a group of friends as they fight to survive their homicidal captors and the terror nesting deep within an old family mine.

Something in the earth has evolved…

Hidden in the West Desert of Utah, the former gold rush settlement of Mammoth is now a ghost town.

For Liz Chilton, a photojournalist on assignment, it’s where her deceased mother was raised but barely escaped with her life 40 years ago.

Seeking to reconnect with her mother’s past, Liz, her husband and another couple take a road trip to the desolate area, where they learn that over the decades, scores of people have gone missing. The odyssey takes a horrifying turn when they encounter something inhuman consuming a man and his dog—devolving into a terrifying and gripping fight for survival.

Inspired by true events, HARVEST DEEP is a stunning debut by Trent Pettry that will take every bit of your self-control to keep you from skipping to the end.

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book as this is a new author for me, but I was pleasantly surprised and captivated by twisting suspense through the whole book.

Liz Chilton along with her boyfriend, Cody and two friends, Scott and Karen decide to take a trip to Utah as Liz seeks answers in a town where her mother grew up.

The town of Mammoth harbors a terrible secret which when the friends arrive find out the hard way that not all is what it seems in the town. When the friends come in contact with some of the townsfolk, they are anything but friendly. The friends end up seeing something that was not meant to be seen happening near an old mine that sits up on a hill.

Unbeknown to the friends there is something far worse than they have ever imagined that is happening in the old mine as far below the surface there is a harvesting happening that the town of Mammoth wants to keep covered up.

When Liz and her friends decide to investigate the old mine, they encounter angry townspeople along with something else that is hungry and the friends have to figure out how to survive their predicament.

What is being harvested deep in the mine of Mammoth? Do the friends survive their encounter? No spoilers here as to find out the answers to these questions, you will just have to read the book.

This book grabbed me by the throat and did not let go. Twists, turns, suspense, mystery, and horror are trapped within these pages. Four stars for keeping me "trapped" in the mine along with the characters.

Scary, trapped, underground monsters.

Couldnt put it down. Great characters, excellent mining cave atmosphere. Scary, great editing. If you like a book about being far underground, trapped with monster like things, you'll love this book.

What a great book to read on Halloween

I started reading this book on Halloween, and continued until finished, the same night. What a great story. It kept me going with a great storyline, and characters. I can't wait to read more.

It’s funny how I’ve been in the middle of an icky bug Christmas gift orgy when I got a hold of this novel.

With no preconceived notions, I was quite pleased with the results. Harvest Deep was a well-written and fun read.

Inspired by a true event, the author used that to go off on a tangent and create a fun ride full of monsters and mayhem. The story starts mundane enough, and slowly builds into an exciting climax with a high body count and a satisfying ending.

The writing was excellent with short, easy to digest chapters. The point of view was third-person, past-tense with almost no head-hopping except a few minor places later in the book that never jarred me from the story. The narrative was brisk, to the point, and never bogged down. My only minor nit was that he spelled toward as towards, the Queen’s English version. However, at least he was consistent throughout.

Overall, this was an outstanding and fun read and the writing never got in the way of the story. I wish more of these creature feature stories were so well written. I had a great time and was able to close the book with a big smile on my face. Highly recommended.

Fun Read

If you just feel like devouring a book in an afternoon or evening you won' t find one much finer than this.
It's a fast page turner about a couple of best friends and their spouses that take off for a weekend jaunt in a luxury motothome.
They decided to explore one of the ladies home towns,in Utah.On the way they stopped off to explore an old abandoned mine that was in the side of a mountain.
Well, we all know that curiosity killed the cat and what happens in a mine should stay there but maybe not.
At any rate you'll need to Read this chiller,-thriller to find out !

Trip from hell!

Loved it! Scary, great characters, and lots of action. Four friends set off in a RV for a work/vacation trip. Unfortunately, the trip turned into the trip from hell. Creatures from a mine cause havoc in their camp ground but this is the least of their worries. Man becomes their biggest problem. Taken captive in a cave the couples have to fight to survive. I am hooked and can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Bravo for this first novel!

Mr. Pettry is a writer to watch. Harvest Deep could have become a B movie on the page, but the author never descends (pun intended) to writing a lesser novel. His talent lies in his bringing believable reality to every scene. The characters are well developed and he obviously did his homework. You can see, hear, and feel the great depth of the caverns. By the way, his second novel, The Descent, is even better!

Food for thought...

I don't know if most people read author notes, prefaces, or just the main body of work, but these other writings can be very informative....and in some cases, unsettling.
Good story. Tight, well-written, fast paced and tension filled with an interesting ending.

Entertaining story for horror fans.

Found this story intriguing from the beginning. Government secrets, misguided people, creepy creatures that should never have seen the light of day create a chilling tale. Worth a read

Great thriller!

I LOVED that the female lead was in her 40’s (something you don’t see often enough), and the story moves along nicely. I read this in one night, as I couldn’t put it down. The ending could have been a bit more intense, but it’s definitely worth a read!

Really good read! Although fiction, this story is partly based in a real life experience and the author brilliantly weaved his tale around that. It has plenty of suspense, drama, action and sci-fi to satisfy most people and it is also an average length book, thus quite a quick read.

Enjoyed the book, but had trouble staying in the story. Not necessarily the books fault, more my having trouble reading ebooks. Well written and good storytelling.

I really liked this series. Friends start off on a vacation and get pulled into a world of human sacrifice to feed underground monsters. The stories continues in the next 2 books and is a good story.

Flat and formularic

A basic monster plot with no character development. Characters are flat and one dimensional which results in the reader being apathetic about their fate. At least for the creature the author went a step beyond giant spider to ... Giant wind scorpion. This was the most original part of the book. Failed to build suspense. I finished it as I hate leaving a story unfinished but it was a chore. I have no interesting in attempting the rest of the series

WOW!!

BOY!! What a ride...this book grabbed you right away and didn't let go. I haven't read a book in a long time that spooked me so quickly. I loved all the main characters and could sympathize with their predicament and cheered on their successes and cried on their losses . The ending was a surprise and I cried at the end. I'm excited to read the next book...and have already downed it. Happy reading my friends. 👍

For a horror novel, I thought it was pretty good. I would say 3.5 stars. It was different from others I have read. The description of the creatures was done really well. I felt like i was in the mine the whole time. At night it would have my heart racing because of the dark. I hate bugs, so it got to me. Lol

It’s readable

It’s readable. The characters and premise of the story are okay, but the writing itself is stilted and forced. The book is too straightforward, there’s no twists or turns, or much in the way of suspense. Big prehistoric bugs, danger, death, defeat, and then happy-ish ending.

I’m giving it three stars because I’ve definitely read worse from self-published authors. This had no major grammatical or spelling errors, which drive me nuts, but the bones of the story could have been fleshed out better.

Webs of Deciept!

This book was very far fetched. It wasn't one of the best books I've read, but also not one of worst. It was what I call a filler book until the next good book I find.

Not great...

The characters are shallow, the editing was bad and the story was just okay...put it all together and this is one of the worst books I have read in my thirty plus years...thank goodness it was short!

Indifferent story, character development, and editing. I found little pleasure in reading this book. And who ever put a Minimum number of words on a review?
