Andy's forty-three. He loves nostalgic television, pints down the pub, and listening to the whole album from beginning to end. His daughter, Maya, is twenty-one, wears good shoes, likes good arguments, and has a secret plan to bring down the government.

The trouble is, three years ago Maya left home, and they haven't spoken since. But this Christmas, she might be coming back. Andy knows she's going to stay. Maya knows she's not.

Mike Bartlett's play Snowflake is an epic story about generational conflict, fathers and daughters, and whether we're living in the best or worst of times. It premiered at the Old Fire Station, Oxford, in 2018, directed by Clare Lizzimore.

I've read practically all of Bartlett's plays, and if this doesn't quite reach the heights of his finest work (Cock; King Charles III, it is still an accomplished, terrifically entertaining piece of drama, with a wealth of good monologue material (the entirety of the first act is basically one long monologue). Because it centers primarily around the Brexit situation, it might not be quite as accessible for an American audience, although the specifics don't matter to the elemental theme of miscommunication between parents and children.

An interesting and very politically relevant 3 hander. I think done with the right cast and with some edits here and there to keep the relevancy up it could be a very poignant and interesting to watch play.

Such a good play. Thanks Soph for recommending!! This play is all about the importance of being heard and listened to and the impact it has on people. I found it quite emotional and the way the set was described created such a beautiful mental image and went through such a journey in itself; it felt so cold but also really warm. A really lovely read!

This Dialogue Lives

Without wanting to give away the ending, I'll just say this: the dialogue throughout is five star. For a three-hander Snowflake is decent... (please bear in mind I've just read the ending).
