Dalton Davis answers his phone, expecting it to be a prank call from a number that’s eerily similar to his. When the man pretends he knows him and has a one-sided conversation that proves his suspicion correct, he almost ends the call. The fast thinking of the stranger on the other end of the line likely saves his life, but what will Dalton find when he gets there?

Kannon Butler is an old soul. Working at an old folks home, his friends are his clients and he’s okay with that. Being attacked in broad daylight just doesn’t happen in their small town, except this day, it does. To him. Quick thinking and a prayer, he ends up on the line with Dalton Davis, who quite literally saves his life.

Healing and living are a struggle after being attacked, but Dalton can’t seem to stay away and Kannon doesn’t want him to. With an amazing family who takes him under their wing, and a gorgeous private investigator that makes it his mission to find out who hurt Kannon, what do you think happens?

***** A step by step look at the anatomy of an assault, a brutal daylight attack and the methodical road to recovery and justice.
We see it from the victim's view, the cops investigation, the private investigator company, and flashbacks to the attacker's words.
Triggers are warned: assault, rape, suicidal thoughts.
* This is about hard working RN, Kannon, who calls a phone number when he's being followed, telling the stranger, Dalton, where he is, his name, and hopes to see him soon, and then the sounds over the phone are from the attack.
Dalton, a security/private investigator,

is a tough guy, who immediately heads to the cross street alerting 911.
For Kannon, Dalton is a hero, when no one else came to help him, as he screamed and fought.
We love big-hearted Dalton, his Mom and brother, Dylan, who all step up to care for Kannon, when no one else cares.

We see the slow progressof healing and investigation, with the intense thoughts of our victim, the police search and dedication, and the Private Investigators of Weston's high tech and security savy men. Their romance moves slowly, but is high in anticipation.
We see the system work with some limitations, that the P.I. team can fill in, and we hear about the failure of the system previously, that left the rapist on the streets.

Kannon gets unconditional TLC from Dalton, his Mom and brother, and it's open-hearted assistance and magnificent care. Therapy and strength of mind and body get Kannon to realize what he must do. Dalton, and his team, plus the cop, are by Kannon's side for every step.

Jenny Wood does a marvelous job of tearing Kannon's world apart and putting him back together. This is a fantastic, deep tale of survival, even though it is with the help of strangers, when no family cares. This book is riveting.

Deeply emotional, heart wrenching and finally heart warming.

Yes, our author needs a proof reader, or editor who can catch the small errors that can irritate readers. But, as another reviewer said, her stories are still exceptional and worth reading.

Thank you dearest Allison for the recommendation !

It is no secret that I am a fan-girl of this author, but this one was a little bit darker than her normal reads.
Though she's no stranger to the hurt/comfort trope, this one felt so real to me, because these were just every day people, but heroes, or unlikely heroes LOL, except Dalton kind of was, eh? He was the ultimate hero. I kind of loved him.

We first meet Dalton when he accepts a random call on his mobile, thinking that he's getting a crank call from a number that's one digit off from his own phone number. When the guy on the other end pretends to have a conversation with him, he realizes something's wrong, just in time for the guy to shout his name and location before a scuffle and then the line goes dead.

Dalton is a private investigator, so his skill set is sharp and he finds Kannon quickly, though it's too late, he's already been seriously violated and is unconscious. When the cops get there, they think HE did it, but all is quickly rightened before they take KAnnon to the hospital.

I love the kind of instant connection stories where we don't have to follow them in their lives together before they meet. This one was kind of action from the very beginning, and Dalton can't understand why he keeps needing to check on Kannon, and Kannon is subconsciously connected to Dalton because he makes him feel safe.
There is a bit of white knight syndromy in the beginning and it's mentioned in there, I had to look it up...
Apparently, it's a real thing!

HOwever, I don't feel like that takes anything from their relationship... they'd gone through a great deal together and I would think that would bond you with anyone who saved our life and vicea versa.
So, I would say that if you want to laugh, cry and be left with another great happily ever after, you've come to the right place.
I think I'll go make me a man sandwich and for the next one... I can't decide if I want it to be Weston and the young kidnapped man, or Dalton's brother Dylan and the cop. Either one would be aces by me.
5 well deserved stars, bravo!

My new favorite by Jenny

How do I put this book into words. Your going laugh app!and cheer and most definitely cry. I was not sure when I read the blurb. I mean what a heavy topic to read about. Not usually something i like to read. This is Jenny Wood though and I LOVE HER BOOKS. So I went into the rabbit hole of Broken. This was a beautiful story of trying to over come horrible tragedy and finding a way to move forward with your life. Beautiful story.

Another great series

If you have read the Kennedy Ink series you will love this series too. This is first book but this has many characters that you want to know more about so I see many more books in the future. You will love Dalton and Kannon. Dalton for his compassion and protective nature. And you'll love Kannon for his courage and how he finds hope. Happy reading!

Amazing story of someone overcoming a traumatic event. From the moment Kannon hears Dalton, he feels safe. Dalton was one of the few people he felt safe with. His family excepted him into their family from the start. Loved them.

First time reading this series..

This my first time reading a book in this series by Jenny Wood. It was a very interesting and sad story, and I felt sorry for how he was attacked. But, he found a stranger who came to his rescue, and stuck with him through out his recovery. He, also found love, care and protection from this stranger and his family, something he never got from his own. I'm looking forward for the next book in this series, and I do recommend it.

A hard read with a happy ending...

This story had such a tragic beginning but through all that came strength, healing, a new family, determination and love. I really enjoyed the main characters and secondary characters I can't wait to read Weston's story next and then Dylan's hopefully cause he and officer D' Angelo definitely have a story that needs to be told. And then there's Knox and the rest of the crew this was a good start to a new series.

Two stars for likable main characters.

The book was good enough that I finished it, but I can't recommend paying for it. To any of the author's ARC readers who did not write her and tell her that she HAD to get this professionally edited, shame. on. you.

The story had promise. It has a strong beginning, although a hard one. The characters aren't deep, but they're likable and we know enough about them to care what happens to them.

Unfortunately, the author can't be trusted with punctuation. It's incredibly distracting. See my notes on Goodreads.

It's also the case that the story ends after the two main characters have bedtime shenanigans for the first time. After that scene there is an epilogue that essentially lists how every single conflict in the story was resolved.

Don't read if first person POV bothers you. Do not read if the unlicensed use of commas, semicolons, and quotation marks bothers you. Don't read if botched endings bother you.

However! Ms. Wood, there is room to repent here. Get the thing professionally edited. It doesn't cost as much as you think, and you can't put a price on a ruined reputation. Figure out how all the things you say happened in the epilogue actually happened and write those two missing chapters. In spite of the complete disregard you show your readers in the current draft, I want to know what happens to Weston, and that's not a given. This draft shows potential. It's just unfinished.

3.5 rounded down.
This was mostly a very enjoyable book. I loved the characters and the assault was dealt with sensitively. It didn't feel gratuitous or there to be titillating.

That ending though ... It's a real shame that everything was just resolved in the epilogue. The story finished a few chapters too soon. It just felt crazy rushed at the end and was really disappointing. This would have been 4 stars for me if the end was fleshed out more.

Apart from that, I think it was a solid story. There were a few typos as mentioned in other reviews but they really weren't all that bad and they didn't distract me from the story.
This is the first Jenny Wood book I've read and I'll definitely try more.
I'm looking forward to reading Wes' story.

Edit: Apparently I have read a Jenny Wood book before. Saving Tanner. I enjoyed it a great deal ... except it had the same issue of the crazy quick ending. Hopefully it's not something that happens in all her books because I overall enjoyed both books and it would be a shame if this is a common issue.

I would have given it a higher rating if she had done a better job with the line edits. Nothing throws you out of a story like bad line edits and OMG there were plenty!
And half the time sometime would start talking and I would have no idea who it was until the end of the paragraph.
It was really frustrating to read, and I'm a little annoyed that I paid money for this book.
This was my first Jenny Wood book and I'm very hesitant to read another. The story was good, I just wish the telling of it had been proof read.

This was a lovely sweet tale of the developing relationship between Kannon and Dalton. It lacked a bit of a punch in the middle, but overall dealt with the aftermath of an awful ordeal in what seemed like an honest and thoughtful way. There were heartbreaking moments but the book left me with a smile.

So good

Ms. Wood did such a wonderful job of taking a very different topic and turning it into a touching book with a happy ending. This book was very well written (with a few grammatical errors) and flows smoothly. I am glad that I read this book. Now I am emotionally tied to all of the characters and can't wait for Weston's and Dalton's stories respectively.

A young man is randomly sexually assaulted on his way home. He manages to call a stranger (just dialed a number on his phone one digit different than his own) while the violent act is in progress. The stranger (a private detective) hears enough to find the scene of the crime, but not to prevent the attack.

A fast moving, well plotted story about rescuing the poor man and then the aftermath of finding the perp, dealing with his injuries and dealing with his fragile mental state. And, I might add, a very nice, slow building romance. I'll have to check out more books by this author.

Good Read

This was a tough, but good book to read. The topic is very hard, but the author did a wonderful job. I love all the main characters and can't wait for more. Dalton was my hero through and through. Kannon found that he was even braver than he thought, but wasn't afraid to lean on those around him.

Ms. Wood has do it again. I love all of hers that I have read and this one was right up there. Well written with well developed characters. I was also excited to see at the end that she plans to write stories for some of the other characters. Can't wait.

Great hurt/comfort story

This book had all the feels, like most Jenny Wood’s books. I love sweet, gruff, protective men that are caretakers of their partners, and this book has that in spades.

Outstanding

Although this was a fictional story it felt so real. This book will be added to my permanent library and is a story that I won't forget. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I didn't put this book down until I completed it, it was that good.

Kannon

I want to say that I enjoyed Dalton and Kannon’s story, but when you read it you’ll know why that doesn’t sound right. The book was really well done, I liked all of the characters and look forward to the continuing series.

Not really a romance, more like a study of an assault. I think he spends more time with and is taken care of more by the love interest’s mom than by the love interest himself. Still a good book, if a bit hard to read due to the subject matter.
Third person dual pov.

3,5/5
