About the author

Vernon Jones, Vernon Stanley; usage: V.S. Vernon Jones (1875-1955) was a British academic, lecturer and academic administrator. He was active at University of Cambridge and changed his family name to Vernon-Jones in 1906. V.S. Vernon Jones published a new translation of Aesop's Fables in 1912.

I remember reading this as a child, although the only story I can actually recall was the story of the crow and the water jug. I remember different versions, from the library or various copies owned by someone else, and what I was most fascinated with in each of them was the abundance and beauty of the accompanying pictures. This translation is illustrated by a true favorite of mine, Arthur Rackham, and his contributions did not fail to enthrall me once again. The stories were short and very easy to read, and are a fun way to convey some good enduring advice and often witty morals. That being said, reading it as an adult was a little tiresome due to a lot of repetitive themes and reiterations, etc. Since the stories were spruced up with so many delightful pieces of art throughout the book though, the numerous similar stories weren't really much of a deterrent to my being able to completely and quickly read the entire book (and to feel a sense of satisfaction in accomplishing the reading of a truly timeless treasure). I feel this is an excellent book to introduce any child to. And everyone should have the experience of at least sampling some of the classic writings in Aesop's Fables.

I remember Aesop's Fables as a child, in thin but oversized books, with only the selected stories and enchanting, colorful drawings of cute little animals.

This complete set of fables differs from that memory, with very few happy endings or lasting animal friendships. Of course, the purpose was to teach life lessons. So though it's a famous classic in the genre, it's just not the same fun read that it was in those old days of innocence.

Maybe I'll try Just So Stories . . .
