A Name Earned

Rate this book
After overcoming years of trouble with his alcoholic father and surviving a near-death car accident, Bobby Byington—for the first time in his life—has a strong family. His parents are reunited, his father has turned away from the bottle, and Bobby is a starter on the high school basketball team. But the door to trouble never stays closed. Bobby's girlfriend, Faye, is suffering attacks from a school bully, and some of Bobby's basketball teammates are dealing with all-too-familiar problems at home. Hoping to help his friends, Bobby shares the legend of No Name, a story about a young man's heated relationship with his father. Coach Robison told it to him back when Bobby needed to hide from his own dad. As the playoffs near and the team plays to win, Coach delivers another message that extends well beyond the basketball "Your life is carved by the choices you make. You earn your name by your actions."

A good continuation of the series that explores the miracle of a second chance. Very basketball focused for a reluctant boy reader who enjoys the game.

A Name Earned By Tim Tingle
Tim Tingle is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma an award winning author and storyteller of twenty books. His father walked the “Trails of Tears in 1835”, which encouraged him to take upon the art of writing and storytelling. His father passed down stories and tales of the Choctaw and it inspired him to write many books based on the “Choctaw Ways.”
“ A Name Earned by Tim Tingle”, is based on a boy named Bobby is the first Indian basketball player to ever play in his school, especially at the varsity level. While Bobby is in school he goes to a through a devastating moment in his life, something that no kid should go through. Having a drunk dad. This even forces Bobby to go into hiding, causing his mom to leave the family, and even cause him to get into a terrible accident. All these events allowed his dad to wake up from this terrible actions and do something better. Now Bobby’s family has reunited and nothing can ruin this. However all good things must come to an end. Lloyd, Bobby’s best friend, and basketball teammate encounters Bobby’s same events, but worst. Lloyd must now live through Bobby’s drunk dad life, but at what cost? Bobby is now at Lloyd side every step of the way making sure Lloyd gets through this one way or another. Will Lloyd survive? And how will Lloyd’s dad act while drunk?
“ A name Earned” is part of the series “pathfinders by Tim Tingle”. I really enjoyed reading this book because I can relate it to me in my life. I might not have gone through the experience of having a drunk dad but I can relate to trying to find my purpose in life. Trying to have a meaning to my name and how it reflects in society. My favorite part of the book was when Llyod came to Bobby one day all sad and upset because of the events that were happening. Instead of Bobby asking him what was wrong or if he wanted to talk about it, Bobby called the whole team and took them to the court. Bobby, Lloyd and his friends played basketball like nothing was happening in their life, they were just having part. That part is special to me because even though everyone wanted to know how Llyod was feeling, they supported him and to me that symbolizes true friendship. I believe really enlightens the reader on that topic throughout the whole book.
If you like to read about culture, real life situations, sports. I believe this is the right book for you because it shows a deeper meaning in life that most people try to cover up. It also shows that even sports can bring a person bond together and help them get through tough times in life. It's not just a game, it's a way of life

"A Name Earned" By Tim Tangle is a story about a boy who is self discovering himself and the hard work that he is putting into something and just a boy who is looking to find himself a purpose.

The story is mainly about a young boy who struggles to figure out who he is and faces some difficult challenges. Through various things they learn the meaning of respect and what it means to be detirmined for something by overcoming obstacles. Their struggles teaches them that their name is not just given but is earned through respect.

Tim Tangle is showing us how their society is struggling and is showing us a lot of literary devices such as conflict, Character vs society, Character vs Self and much more. The story is basically telling us that recognition comes from personal growth not what other people see you doing its just what you know that you can do and etc, also that they just wanna be able to feel relatable and be able to relate to the readers in order to catch their attention.

"A Name Earned" By Tim Tangle is an inspiring story that is trying to signal the important of self improvement, dedication, determination and someones genuine effort and strength to find themselves once again.

In this third book in the series, Bobby helps teammate Lloyd Blanton this time. Lloyd's father is also an alcoholic, and Bobby and his dad are the hope Lloyd needs to get through a particularly rough patch with his father. That and Coach Robison's guidance.

There's also basketball to be considered. The boys are freshmen on the team, and they have to earn their places with the upperclassmen – the seniors – on the court. And this time Bobby's girlfriend, Faye, faces her school bully.

This is the shortest of the series' books I read. At 136 pages, it's a little more than 70 printed pages long, including a note from the author at the end, making it a slim, accessible read for all.

Enjoy!

3rd in a series of Hi/Lo books about a basketball playing Choctaw teen by celebrated Choctaw storyteller Tim Tingle.

One of the best hi/lo series I've ever read, with a ton of basketball action, plus drama, family issues, romance, bullying, racism and a strong moral about the power of friendship.
