The Emotionally Intelligent Office: 20 Key Emotional Skills for the Workplace
Modern businesses place huge emphasis on technical training, yet a lot of what determines the success or failure of an organisation has nothing to do with the traditional 'hard' skills taught at business school, but rather the sophisticated 'soft' skills that are key to emotional maturity.
The Emotionally Intelligent Office introduces us to twenty core emotional skills that can help businesses and individuals to flourish. They range from giving and receiving honest feedback and accepting that it's OK to fail, to addressing jealousies and insecurities within teams. We learn about how our childhoods continue to have an often unhelpful impact on how we deal with colleagues and the best ways we might speak so that others will listen.
This book is informed by the practical work that the Business division of The School of Life carries out, endeavouring to change the culture within organisations around the world by teaching teams the art of emotional intelligence.

About the author
The School of Life
175 books3,286 followersThe School of Life is a global organisation helping people lead more fulfilled lives.
We believe that the journey to finding fulfilment begins with self-knowledge. It is only when we have a sense of who we really are that we can make reliable decisions, particularly around love and work.
Sadly, tools and techniques for developing self-knowledge and finding fulfilment are hard to find – they’re not taught in schools, in universities, or in workplaces. Too many of us go through life without ever really understanding what’s going on in the recesses of our minds.
That’s why we created The School of Life; a resource for helping us understand ourselves, for improving our relationships, our careers and our social lives - as well as for helping us find calm and get more out of our leisure hours. We do this through films, workshops, books and gifts - as well as through a warm and supportive community.

The book is a quick read of 20 emotional skills. Each of them is addressed very briefly. While the thoughts are not deep, they can be quite refreshing.
Here are some of the skills addressed (not exhaustive and based on my understanding of the text):
• Perfection: There is no such thing as perfection. We choose among different types of sufferings. There is only a good enough, not a perfect. By tuning down our expectations, we can enjoy life more.
• Diplomacy: Trading emotional currency for the deeper issues at hand. Being diplomatic means being able to view the emotional human being as an otherwise loveable person.
• Effectiveness: Regarding the aim as the end and willing to adapt to any means.
• Leadership: We admire the Jesus-type leadership, where the leader is both superior and akin to us.
• Empathy: Embracing the deeper recesses of ourselves that can help us relate to people that seem distant to us at first sight.
• Eloquence: Bringing forth emotions that move us to action, and recognizing that using only logic is not enough.
• Purpose: Can be found through the right narrative of how our work pieces come together. We must remember that real work can be disjoint and slow but not necessarily void of purpose.

I’m not buying any more books from the School of Life. This is the 3rd or 4th one by them that is simply a pile of trash. I don’t think this one was edited at all. It has 20 sections, each on a different theme—Calm, Self-Awareness, Objectivity, etc. The one on Calm is so-so, but all the other 19 are ridiculous stream of conscious ramblings that I can’t imagine bring any insight to anyone at all. The whole thing reads like a first draft that was never edited. Around the 17th or 18th topic, they suddenly remember the book was supposed to be focused on the work place, so the topics suddenly have verbiage about the office again, from out of nowhere.

Quite easy read on a complex topic, however some anecdotes were missing the point and made it difficult to follow the main idea of the narrative.

A book about emotional intelligence based on interwoven anecdotes from philosophy, story-telling, cultural history and workplace psycho-dynamics.
I found this book highly enjoyable for how the study of Humanities and its skills transfer from arts education to leadership roles outside the classroom. If anything, the book is a testament to arts and social science education educating the growth of human potential and self awareness even while working in the most challenging space: the office.

Another great book from The School of Life.
As alwasy there was a lot of repetition from other books, but I think that is the point.
Reading books from The SoL has soothing effect on me. Calms me down, gives perspective, reduces anxiety.

This book made me reflect on how much empathy and awareness are missing from the way we design, work, and interact with others. It shows that work is not only about results but also about understanding human behavior and emotion.
One line that stayed with me was “The world of design is filled with absences of empathy. The planners of paths around parks, for instance, routinely forget how people actually walk.” It captures how often we overlook real human needs in our decisions. The book also notes that people “mess up their work because they cease to think of themselves as their own first customers,” which feels like a reminder to stay grounded and connected to purpose.
There are parts that speak quietly but deeply about time and understanding. “It might be twenty five years until your child understands why you made a certain decision, let alone acknowledges that there might have been a point to it.” It made me think about how patience and trust shape many of our choices, even when others cannot see it yet.
I also found its thoughts on fear and work very relatable. “Another way of thinking of fearful people is that they start off as overly good children.” It explains how many of us carry old fears into adult life. Sometimes “it can seem as if work is primarily an arena of exasperation and delay,” and that “our lives become dominated by a fear of losing, or never getting, things that we could in fact manage without.”
The final line that stayed with me is simple but true. “Being a good employee should not be that different from being that truly important thing, a good person.”
This book is a quiet reminder that emotional intelligence is not a technique but a way of living with more empathy and honesty, both at work and beyond.

I start my morning with School of Life articles given under “Book of Life”.
I have read some of it’s books as well. Sadly, this book is extremely disappointing and doesn’t say anything new. Some examples given under this book don’t really make sense and go way out of topic. The information given here can be easily found on web, if you browse each skill separately. In short, it doesn’t tell you anything new. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I bookmarked the chapter on eloquence, which is a great reminder that being smart and having a logical proposal isn't enough. The human / imperfect / emotional / political / storytelling angles are just as important if you want to get anything done. I get lost in having correct logic, but most people aren't as Vulcan as I am, so even though it's annoying I have to be sympathetic to others' perspectives.

TSOL's approach to life has been to take a non-romantic, existential view. However, for me, such an approach needs to be tempered and applied depending on the context. For instance, to explain issues like creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship etc, it's not always wise to take a philosophical approach and conclude by moving the spotlight to the human condition.

Nothing new I guess but it's a nice reminder. Ideal for fast reading in picking only the drops that are interesting for you because the author tends to bother us with too much unnecessary storytelling.

One of the best books I’ve read recently. Clearly transcending the target of being helpful in the workplace. Some passages may leave you thinking for a while and in need of a careful second read.
I’ll be looking for more books from the so-called “School of Life”.

This one tried my patience by setting up great topics, and then covering everything but them. However, a couple stickers: "Being a good employee shouldn't be that different from being that truly important thing, a good person."

I love the books from The School of Life but this one needed more of a narrative wrapper around the concept: a leading voice. There are plenty of nice anecdotes and truths in here though.

A couple of decent chapters. I like Alain but this strayed just a bit too far into the creative to be an artful book about skills or a good book of art about the workplace.
