If you like Goblin Slayer's main series this is more of the same.
We get to see our hero become the Goblin Slayer here. The first chapter mainly focusing on the attack on the village. You get glimpses of that event in the main series but here you see it in all the horror. Meaning lots of spikes through heads and goblins raping a lot of women. It's hard to watch and it hits the effect of why our hero is so determined to kill them all. Next is a 5 year time skip in which we have the Goblin Slayer going on his first quest alone.
It's cool to see the Goblin Slayer make so many mistakes and learn from them. Also nice to see how he actually escaped the horrors of the events as a child and his sister's death. The brutality of the manga works in its favor for the type of show it is. Also, the art is really solid. It's nothing brand new and you can guess what will happen next if seen the show or read the manga of the original series but it's well done and well drawn. A 3.5 out of 5, I'll bump it to a 4.
I recognize that this is a more visual medium than the novel, but it still goes overboard in depicting the vicious gang rapes of women by goblins to the point where it does seem as if it's being used as fanservice. Very distasteful.
Goblin Slayer year one is the story about the Goblin Slayer and how he spend his first year as the Goblin Slayer. In an origin story that details how goblin slayer got to where he is as an adventurer and living with Cow Girl his childhood friend. In the dark DnD inspired Fantasy world of goblin slayer. Liking the first season of the anime I really want to sink my teeth into more Goblin Slayer and what better way than an origin story. Which was enjoyable, if you liked the manga or anime you should be right at home with this. I enjoyed the origin story for the most part. I was disappointed that they really didn't focus on the training aspect they just jumped straight to goblin slayer slaying goblins. He buys the armor and is now the Goblin Slayer we all recognize. I would have wanted more character development and him be this cold calculating goblin killer. It sets up for the next volume to finish off Year One. Other than that it's more Goblin Slayer a series you either like or hate at this point year one won't change your mind. As someone who likes Goblin Slayer it's a good read brutal, dark, and gritty a perfect fit for the first year of Goblin Slayer.
A seinen manga that is a mashup of fantasy and rpg tropes. The story here is paper thin as are all of the characters, who don't even have names and are instead called "the Goblin Slayer" and "Farm girl". I guess the author only needed a paper thin excuse to have copious amounts of gratuitous violence, and nudity. The only good thing I can say is the art is really well done. It is dynamic and conveys the action. Needless to say I won't be continuing this series.
Trigger warnings for extreme violence, depictions of rape, child murder, misogyny
In the beginning a boy lost his family, home, and innocence and in his place grew a man obsessed with justice and revenge.
Like the original Goblin Slayer manga the side story is rated Mature and has some gruesome scenes of violence, sexual assault (though just short of actually showing penetration thanks to a bit of editing), and plenty of gore so be sure to take that into account before starting this series delving into how Goblin Slayer became who he is in the main series. Of course Goblin Slayer is not the only character in the book so we get to see Cow Girl (I still consider that a sad name for her even if her breast are udderly large) and Guild Girl as well as an assortment of other characters that were around before Goblin Slayer officially began his quest of Goblin Annihilation.
Having watched the anime series and just started the manga I've got to say this is intriguing. This manga series covers the start of the adventurer who will become the Goblin Slayer. An interesting introduction as it shows the readers the mistakes that Goblin Slayer makes in his pursuit of revenge and how he learns from them. I am really liking the progression of the character who is having to work to defeat his opposition rather than a over powered hero who smites the monsters with barely a effort. Although this manga reinforces the notion that all of those foul creatures should be destroyed. I will say that this was a little more sexually graphic than first manga of Goblin Slayer and so wouldn't recommend it for kids. But if you are following the series then generally readers won't be too shocked by anything presented here.
This story line picks up right after Goblin Slayer loses his home to a goblin attack. From then it covers his first year as a goblin slayer. So far the only familiar characters from the original story line are the farm girl her uncle and a few side characters from the guild. This is different than the original series because Goblin Slayer doesn't know all of his nifty tricks to the trade so we are witnessing his trial and error learning process. I would not recommend this to teens as it has graphic rape segments much worse than the original which I didn't think was possible.
Much like the first manga Goblin Slayer, Vol. 1, this had a brutal start with a lot of violence on woman, it's a way to empathize why Goblin Slayer hates them so much after what they did to him and his family. Farm girls inclusion was nice as well, it's fun seeing the characters roots and how out lead became such a badass he is. In this he is very much learning and does make quite a few mistake throughout which makes it more interesting, if you love the other series then this is worth a read but as a standalone I'm not sure that it'll be as enjoyable.
Introduced the tragedy and what comes after. There is always a darkness in the world, a darkness everyone tries to ignore it slip past. In a way it parallels grooming gangs in the UK, Goblins are there taking advantage of the weak and helpless. Most of the worldviews them until they become too bad to ignore, them they are officially dealt with.
Picked it up. Read 4 pages. Put it down because I forgot what I was reading and wasn't quite ready for it. Aside from that, we get a better look into how goblin slayer survived his origin story and how he goes about being a methodical murderer of goblin, with action scenes that are easier to follow than many that I've read before.
Whilst one may have to be a fan of the GS series to enjoy this; it provides additional background on the main character adding depth to the series' overall character development.
