People Skills 101 by Kerry O’Hallaron is impressively well-laid out. Each chapter starts with a social skills quote; many of the quotes are modern and relatable by today’s standards. Following the quotes are the chapter headings and sub-headings. O'Hallaron’s organization of his book makes it possible for readers to move back and forth, visiting chapters that have more impact and moving away from those that have less.

What is most remarkable about this author’s writing is his self-disclosure, revealing what shyness and introversion felt like as he tried to deal with people and often feared for his job, as he struggled to convey confidence. The author writes in a humble tone, avoiding preachy sentimentality, as he offers his self-taught social skills to readers. The positives in the book are: addressing politeness in the digital age, admitting the biases he was raised with and his conscious self-growth towards becoming inclusive, his personal anecdotes and his sincerity throughout his writing.

However, some of the people skills are recycled information from previous self-help books. The big smile concept and remembering names goes back to Carnegie. However as the book progresses, it becomes more original and humanistic. The tone remains positive throughout the writing, but in reality, people struggling to relate to others often need to to learn how to set boundaries, deal with mean-spirited people, and overcome prejudice and hostility by others. These are facts of life that often rob shy people of their confidence.

Although O' Hallaron’s book does not deal with relating to all kinds of people, it does a good job of teaching readers how to develop empathy, practice friendliness, and how to start an initial connection with strangers, how to use a positive attitude towards all stratum of society, and most importantly, how to practice gratitude as a powerful foundation of relating to others. People Skills 101 is an updated version of positive thinking and is an asset to people who are trying to make the world a friendlier and more peaceful place to live.

This book is as easy to read as it is useful.

I have seen advertising comparing the book to “Dale Carnegie’s classic” and stating that it “follows in the Dale Carnegie tradition.” I agree with both of these, but they are entirely too modest. The “classic” was written many years ago in the language of that time, and is not very readable today. People Skills 101, on the other hand, is written in today’s language, relevant, and eminently readable.

O’Hallaron starts out with a story from his past which ultimately was the catalyst for him writing this book many years later. It’s a good story about a person (the author) who had poor people skills, working in a job in which the primary requirement was good people skills. He does a good job describing how he got demoted rather than fired, spent the next 25 years mastering the skills he had lacked, and ultimately wrote this book because no other book of its type was available.

Each chapter starts out with a similar anecdote, some from the author’s experience, some from the experiences of historical figures, and some from a variety of other people. Each anecdote does a good job providing an example of the skill he wants to talk about in that section. He then goes about clearly outlining the skill, its need, and how to exercise it.

O’Hallaron states that everyone can use this book. I have to agree. I found that I already had some of this information; some was completely new to me; but it’s all very useful. If you buy this book as an investment in yourself, it will pay for itself the next day.

From something as easy as genuinely smiling to the more complex concept of finding a way not to complain, applying these concepts can improve your life. Contains lots of common-sense information to help develop appropriate people skills for everyday life. The book contains a lot of anecdotes to back up the theories contained. Useful pointers for both introverts and extroverts. If you want to develop better relationships with people (and who wouldn't?), this book is for you. I found the extensive use of italics and right-sided formatting of these paragraphs distracting, but that is a small point. The content is very useful, and I have certainly picked up some new ideas.

Interesting & Insightful.
Not being a person who likes small talk I have had my moments of feeling awkward, so I found this book quite insightful and interesting, really liked the key points.
I think this is a book you could dip in and out of, although I read it all the way through.
If you struggle to start up conversations or attract good friends/working relationships then this is definitely the book for you. Written in a good easy-to-read form with interesting stories from the authors own life. I recommend.

Mostly recycled from previous motivational speakers.

This is a collection of mostly recycled thoughts and actions by other names in the motivational speaking business. I've read Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins and many more of the same ilk and it all sounds the same, only with a new author's perspective and experience in putting theory into practice.
That said, it is still a good book to have to remind you of those things which make successful people that way.
