Gwen's family had only one rule—stay out of Grandma's garden. And if it wasn’t for her annoying cousin, she never would have broken it. Everything seems fine until she pulls an ancient book from the old well inside.

And pays for it.

A dark magic is unleashed from its prison, and Gwen becomes its new host. Now, not only does she have to learn to use her own magic, she must also keep the dark magic from taking over her soul. Some rules are made to be broken. But breaking this one may just destroy the world.

I need to preface this with the knowledge that I am not a huge fan of reading young adult, paranormal or dark novels and this was all three of those things. I think I would have liked it better if any of those three things had been different so if you are a fan then this book may be more likable for you.

I was a little creeped out by the dark magic aspects of the story but that may appeal to others more than it does for me. And I was frustrated that Gwen's mother and grandmother kept leaving her on her own without enough knowledge to protect herself. Plus she is a teenager and teens aren't exactly known for making the best decisions. I guess she needed time away from them for the story to unfold but that doesn't make it less frustrating to me.

There were some holes that bugged me. For example, Craig disappears but aside from putting up some flyers does no one really care? Maybe that was another example of mom and grandma knowing more than they were telling Gwen. There are other things that would be spoilers to mention that I just didn't get. But that is perhaps my lack of understanding fantasy books. I'm perhaps too literal.

Andy was my favorite character. He was just a good person and seemed to be beyond his years in maturity.

Again it would be a spoiler to mention specifics but the ending seemed abrupt and not quite believable for me.

So while this wasn't a favorite for me, I expect that fantasy lovers would enjoy it more.

Sex: teens making out
Language: no
Violence: yes
some teen alcohol use
