I really don’t know if this book is the most ridiculous or most entertaining thing I have ever read.
From the very beginning I was wary, for middle grade fiction books tend to be either hits or misses with me, and this one seemed extremely “quirky”. I nearly DNFd it about 25 pages in, because I didn’t know if I could continue reading it. Why? The following:
1 – The repetitive writing style. Namely “I have all the natural instincts of [insert something here]”, the way Ivy called everyone “dear”, the way Ivy lied about absolutely everything, and the number of times the word “fat” was used in every and any kind of variation.
2 – Ivy’s stupidity. I know the girl is only twelve, but I mean come on. The villain of the story was predictable from the moment we met her, and it took Ivy roughly 300 pages to come to the same conclusion.
3 – The utter ridiculousness of a lot of the story. There was cheesecake face planting and onion holding and all kinds of the same thing, and I found it a little too immature, I suppose, for my tastes.
4 – I felt like quite a bit of the story was filler. Not a lot happened, plot wise, but from the blurb you’d think it would be quite fast moving and actiony. But no. A lot of it is Ivy being stupid, and ignoring facts, and so on.
But.
But.
After a while, I found that I didn’t want to put it down, even though the aforementioned annoyances were still present in the book. And when I turned the last page, I wanted the sequel.
I think there is a lot of room for growth for Ivy’s character, a lot of room for an intriguing plot, and I also found myself becoming quite fond of the little thing and all her ridiculous character traits. I want to see where the story takes her, and I want her to have a happy ending.
So with that: Anyone But Ivy Pocket is a book for the light (and young) at heart, and is equal parts ridiculous and entertaining, and will somehow leave you wanting to read more.
Rekommenderas varmt.
An imagination fueled 12 year old on a mysterious adventure. The STUNNING illustrations spaced throughout the book really stole the show for me. The story was full of energy and Ivy Pockets reminded me of Amelia Bedelia in the best kind of way. The naivety was there for sure. I did think Ivy's manners were a bit brutish at times, but that too makes for interest in the story.
http://www.divabooknerd.com/2015/05/a... Once in a while a book comes along that you utterly fall head over heels in love with. Ivy Pocket, you are incredible. Ivy is a character you're never likely to forget. Only twelve, but she's full of self importance and tall tales about her life. She's brash, arrogant and quite rude... But Ivy sees her meddling and astute observations as a wonderful character trait, often baffled at the overreaction of those she's kind enough to grace her opinions with. But for all of Ivy's flaws, I found her fabulously flamboyant, dramatic and incredibly charming. In her short amount of years, Ivy has had to grow up without parents to guide her, and although she'll boast of her impeccable social skills, Ivy has never had a true friend. Until now. But Ivy is naive and although she'll tell you otherwise, she's easily manipulated and finds herself embroiled in a deceptive scheme to steal the necklace, not leaving the twelve year old knowing who to trust.
Ivy's adventure is hilarious, entertaining and wonderfully written. Too often, books intended for middle grade readers tend to force a hidden meaning, educating the reader and forgotten are the core elements of children and middle grade novels, to have fun, to delight, to charm and entertain and author Caleb Krisp has done exactly that, intelligent humour. I absolutely adored Ivy. Her sassy quips, her ability to pay backhanded compliments with so much flare and pizazz had me giggling myself silly.
Without a doubt, Anyone But Ivy Pocket is one of the most hilarious, sassy and entertaining middle grade that you'll ever have the pleasure of reading.
I am not sure whether this book is absolutely brilliant or a pain in the ass. Ivy Pocket reads a little like Amelia Bedelia (who just happens to be one of my favorite characters ever) and that brings up the question of whether this book was supposed to be a satirical or if we’re actually supposed to take Ivy Pocket seriously.
I am going to go with the former because if the latter were true, I’d have some serious issues with the book.
Ivy Pocket is a fun adorable character who has a tendency to trust the wrong people, say the wrong things and can be pretty insensitive. Yet she, for all those same reasons, is so fun to read about. It’s so fun to see her say the most absurd things to people so casually, not even realizing the affect her words have on people. But there is more to Ivy Pocket than this seemingly shallow person. She is after all, an orphan, and has a tendency to lie to herself to make herself not feel as let down about her situation in life. It’s also really adorable how she’ll exaggerates and then indirectly admits she was exaggerating. Her voice is incredibly refreshing and really made this book a cute book to read.
Most of my problems actually arise as a result of Ivy’s flaws though. She can be so dense and so unwilling to see the obvious and because of this I felt like her characteristics were the main things driving the plot. What could have been wrapped up quickly was dragged out and what should have been focused on longer (certain explanations towards the end of the novel) was cut short.
All in all, this was a cute and fun book to read but if there had been more explanations and less dancing around the truth, I would have enjoyed the book a whole lot more.
This was such a fun, cute and spooky middle grade. Feelt almost magical and cozy to read. Enjoyed the not so perfect Ivy Pocket and her antics, seeing ghost and getting in tricky situations. I'm very eager to see where the series goes next but I don't think my library have the rest but luckely my book app does. Hopefully I'll enjoy the ebook format as well.
When I first read the synopsis, Ivy Pocket’s character sounded a lot like Amelia Bedelia from the Amelia Bedelia series by Peggy Parish. However, what really drew me to the book was the illustration on the front cover. It looked quite gothic and kind of reminded me of Tim Burton’s stop-motion films, so I knew I had to give this one a try. I don’t often laugh out loud when it comes to reading books but when I was reading Anyone But Ivy Pocket it was a common occurrence. This book is HILARIOUS. Honestly, I found myself chuckling every few pages–that’s how funny this book is. I know that it won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but I found it absolutely delightful.
I’d read a few reviews for this book, and what I found is that people either love and hate Ivy Pocket’s character. After reading this book I can see why. Ivy Pocket is completely enamoured with herself and infuriates those around her. It’s sometimes a little bit incredible to believe she’s only 12 years old because of all the things she says and the manner in which she conducts herself. She tends to think very highly of herself and thinks she knows what’s best. Sometimes you feel like ripping out your hair whenever Ivy says something or is completely oblivious to what is obvious to everyone else, but her comments made me laugh most of the time. She's got a sharp edge of humor that reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events–you either get it and laugh or you don’t and end up hating the book.
I was just a little sad because the eGalley didn’t include some of the gorgeous illustrations. The whole experience of a children’s book sometimes comes from the fact that there are illustrations present and not being able to see them I felt took away from the experience. But that’s maybe just me–it wasn’t a picture book so luckily it didn’t take away too much.
I enjoy dark books and I enjoy funny books, and Anyone But Ivy Pocket was the perfect blend of the two. I didn’t really expect this book to take a supernatural turn, but it just goes to show that there’s so much more to follow, and I can’t wait to read more of this series. A bundle of laughs weaved into murder and mystery, do yourself a favour and READ THIS BOOK.
Ivy Pocket represents everything I despise about people.
She lies, shamelessly. She insults everyone, mostly for no reason, and has a very high opinion of herself, also for no reason. Not to mention she does it all based on physical appearance, which makes her shallower than a pizza pan. Adding to it all is the level of her general stupidity, which I find incredible for a twelve-year-old child.
The story is lukewarm and the mystery uninteresting. The facts at the very end slightly improved the overall impression, ... but beyond that, average and totally forgettable one.
I read this aloud to my 3 children and they absolutely adored it. Every night they begged for "just one more chapter! just one more chapter!" This book covered it all: funny, great story, great characters, a little but scary in parts (but not too scary!) - and absolutely engaging. Bedtime was stretched out on a few nights just so we could read a little bit more! My children have quoted to me often from the book since we read it, it has really stuck with them. Recommended for kids 5 to 12.
I have to admit that I was hooked to this book even before I read the blurb. No it’s not the cover, but the message from the author at the back of the ARC that I received. I have received quite a few ARCs before but none with such a message from the author. It was different, it was interesting and it was humorous and that is what got me hooked to the book. Here’s a pic of the back cover so that you can take a look for yourself (I just had to share it!)
Ivy Pocket is a twelve year old who works as a lady's maid. No matter her own opinion about herself, her employer, Countess Carbunkle dumps her in Paris as she just could not take any more of what Ivy had to offer. Stranded in the city with no money and no place to go, Ivy tries her best to gain employment. But when her attempt at getting a job at a hotel fails, she is approached by a boy. Ivy meets Duchess of Trinity for a job prospect. She is expected to follow precise instructions about getting a necklace to England and delivering it to Matilda Butterfield. With no other options at hand, Ivy accepts the job that will fetch her £500 and a fresh start at life. From there on Ivy’s adventure takes off as she discovers that the Clock Diamond has some special qualities and her growing attachment to it.
Ivy is a hilarious character to follow. He has very high opinion about herself that is almost to the point of being conceited. She thinks of herself as this larger than life persona who can deal with anything and has a solution for everything. She continuously refuses to conform She can be dense, irritating and free with insults. But her loud character is just a cover though, for the young orphaned girl who longs for her parents and a loving home. I loved the author’s style of narration and the fact that the language is simple enough for the kids this book is meant for. But what I loved the most was the author’s sense of humor that could almost be called twisted at times yet I laughed all the way through.
Anyone But Ivy Pocket by Caleb Krisp is one of those books where I alternated between liking it and being annoyed by it. On the one hand, Ivy was so ridiculous and made me laugh; and on the other, had she been someone real, I probably would have strangled her.
As a character, Ivy kind of reminded me of Amelia Bedelia. For those of you unfamiliar with Amelia Bedelia, she’s a housekeeper who gets into all kinds of shenanigans because she’s constantly misinterpreting things, yet you can’t help but love her because she has the best intentions at heart. Well, that’s Ivy – except her personality is insufferable, and so you don’t love her like you do Amelia Bedelia.
Put it simply, Ivy has a massive ego and absolutely no manners. I get that she’s a compulsive liar with a flair for the dramatic because she’s an orphan who’s trying to forget how lonely she is, but not being tactful tends to make people dislike you. I also kept forgetting that she was only twelve years old because the way she talked (e.g. she called everyone, “dear”) and acted was like someone much older – that is, until she would reveal how naïve she actually was.
Ultimately, I’d have to say that Ivy’s character was probably both the greatest strength and weakness of Anyone But Ivy Pocket. In any case, Ivy Pocket is a protagonist that’s hard to forget!
You hate her, but you pity her. But you know that she won't want you to pity her. So you just try to like her despite her quirkiness. But once you try, you actually do like her. She's warm and friendly, although she's got a funny way of showing her kindness and gratitude.
There's enough magical elements inside to attract young readers and at the very end, you get a hint that there will be more to come.
The type of book I want my kids to read. Kindness, self confidence, courage and strength.
I figured I would only read a few chapters, since I borrowed it from work I aimed to return it before my last day. Well, the story was so exiting! I could not stop reading it! I was not expecting this. It was funny, sad, suspensful and had the most beautiful illustrations.
What else can I say? I'm looking forward to the second book.
Funny, whimsical and heart-breaking, all at the same time!
Mystery, an insufferable but utterly charming and good-hearted heroine, and villains abound! Anyone but Ivy Pocket is now one of my favorite books, and has earned itself an honourable position on my bookshelf!
Ivy Pocket is an orphan and a maid. She is introduced as a horrific maid with unorthodox methods of serving her employers -- dunking their faces into fruit punch to cure fever, for example. Then she is called into the room of a dying duchess who tasks her with delivering a mysterious diamond necklace to the daughter of an "old friend."
What ensues is a hilarious, gut-wrenching, hair-tearing adventure that saw me racing from page to page. Ivy Pocket is a fantastic heroine. She is self-deluded and a compulsive liar, yes, but she is also kind-hearted and loyal. Deep inside she is also a lonely girl in search of a family and a sense of belonging.
Ivy Pocket's story will tickle your funny bone and break your heart, all at the same time. Highly recommended for fans of whimsical, dark fairy tales. This is the first of a planned trilogy. I adored this book and cannot wait for May 2016!!
This is an amazing book. Why is this not on people's list of amazing books to read? I am so lucky to have picked it up at the library. A hilariously gothic tale of a young maid who gets herself in the middle of a mystery over a diamond. Ivy is a unique little character calling her employers fatheads in the sweetest way possible. She has a way with blunt truth. I don't want to spoil a thing about this book. It is well worth the read and you will enjoy this little gem of a book. Please, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. You will enjoy the journey. I need to find the second one now.
I like the Ivy character, find her amusing and silly, still, she has a power of stubbornness and frankness I often don't encounter in many child characters. Her naivety makes the story go forward and is amusing and terrifying at the same time. Definitely an amusing read, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
This book is bonkers and a lot of fun! I really liked the illustrations as well. I've already bought the next book in the series, looking forward to it.
