Non Serviam: The Official Story of Rotting Christ
Three years in the making, this epic tome takes the reader on a trip through three decades of the legendary black metal band Rotting Christ. Totaling 300 pages and including over 170 images, many previously unseen, the book was created by none other than founder and frontman Sakis Tolis, together with Dayal Patterson (author of ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’, ‘The Cult Never Dies Vol. One’ and ‘Into The Abyss’).
As well as featuring a brutally honest account from Sakis himself, the book includes extensive testimonies from his brother Themis Tolis, (who has never previously given interviews during his 30 years in the band), as well as members and ex-members of the band including co-founder Jim Mutilator, Morbid, George Tolias, Van Ace and George Emmanuel.

He has recently produced some of the band's albums and contributed as session keyboardist. Sakis has also provided guest vocals and guitars for a number of bands, for example providing guest backing vocals on the track Mocking Modesty on the Nightrage album Wearing a Martyr's Crown and additional vocals on Spanish North of South's single "Just Fourteen Seconds", taken from their "The Tides in Our Veins" album.

Το 2018 τους βρήκε να γιορτάζουν τα 30 χρόνια συνεχούς παρουσίας με πάρα πολλές κυκλοφορίες και περιοδείες σε όλα τα μήκη και πλάτη της γης. Η περίοδος αυτή φάνταζε ιδανική και ύστερα από την συνεργασία του επί κεφαλής των Rotting Christ, Σάκη Τόλη και του συγγραφέα Dayal Patterson, ο οποίος έχει ασχοληθεί κυρίως με το νορβηγικό black metal στα βιβλία του, εν έτει 2019 παρουσιάζεται η πρώτη βιογραφία της μπάντας με τίτλο Non Serviam - Rotting Christ: Η επίσημη βιογραφία από τις εκδόσεις Οξύ.

Υπάρχει πολύ μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον ακούγοντάς τους (διαβάζοντάς τους μάλλον) να μιλάνε για τα πρώτα χρόνια των Rotting Christ στα τέλη των 80s, με τις επιρροές τους και τα πρώτα τους βήματα να φαίνονται ίσως περίεργα σήμερα για μία black metal μπάντα. Γήπεδα, μπάχαλα, αναρχισμός και παρέα με punk και hardcore μπάντες ήταν μερικά συνήθη συμβάντα στα πρώτα χρόνια της μπάντας.

Τα κεφάλαια της βιογραφίας είναι χωρισμένα κυρίως ανά κυκλοφορία της μπάντας, που χωρίζει και χρονικά τα διάφορα συμβάντα στην ιστορία της. Και εδώ βρίσκεται ένα πολύ μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Η εικόνα που έχουν πλέον οι Rotting Christ τόσο αισθητικά όσο και μουσικά δεν έχει πολύ μεγάλη σχέση με την hardcore και grindcore, οριακά γηπεδική αισθητική που συναντάται στα πρώτα demo της μπάντας και που σιγά σιγά αλλάζει από τις πρώτες σοβαρές κυκλοφορίες και μετά. Κυρίως λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τους πρώτους ωμούς δίσκους, στους πιο ατμοσφαιρικούς και goth δίσκους των mid-90s ως τις κυκλοφορίες τους των τελευταίων δέκα ετών. Διαβάζοντας όμως κανείς το Non Serviam από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος καταλαβαίνει πως η συνέχεια των Rotting Christ πραγματοποιήθηκε αναπόφευκτα και ίσως αναμενόμενα.

Ωραίο βιβλίο, αρκετές πληροφορίες για τους δίσκους και πως δημιουργήθηκαν. Θα ήθελα περισσότερο παρασκήνιο από τις περιοδείες, πολύ λίγα πράγματα αναφέρονται. Επίσης βρήκα κάποιες λίγες αντιφάσεις, σε σχέση με πράγματα που είχαν δηλώσει σε συνεντεύξεις τα τελευταία 20 χρόνια. Αλλά όχι κάτι το τραγικό. Όπως και να'χει, αξίζει! Και μόνο που με ξεκόλλησε(ελπίζω όχι για λίγο) από το μπλοκ που είχα φάει εδώ και μήνες, το αγαπάω. χαχαχα Είχα να διαβάσω βιβλίο σχεδον 3 μήνες :(

When I saw this book announced, I was more than excited. One of my favourite bands, my fellow countrymen rotting Christ, and the book written by dayal, whose books I simply love and have devoured during the past years. The book is awesome, simply said. There are a lot of pictures, memorabilia and posters etc., giving the book a great flow between text and eye candy. Most chapters correspond to new releases, with a few exceptions. Very well structured and easy to follow. There is prose, but the emphasis is on interviews, which are left in first person speech, a very good decision in this case, since it's the majority of the book. I read this in a couple of days, which shows how good and gripping it was. This makes me so excited for the new album, I can't wait!! I actually pre-ordered while reading the book, haha! Sakis is a person I absolutely admire for his perseverance, his refusal to compromise his work, his loyalty to the scene and of course because he's just a down-to-earth guy and always polite and respectful. Something so rare nowadays! This book was not only the story of rotting Christ but even more so a glimpse of the leader thereof, and that's what makes the book so special and enjoyable. I'm happy this book was made, I'm happy I could contribute a tiny bit, too. Thanks dayal, thanks Sakis!!

Μια βιογραφία με πλούσιο αφηγηματικό υλικό και πολλές φωτογραφίες (θα προτιμούσα να ήταν έγχρωμες) δωσμένο ωμά , χωρίς λογοκρισία μέσα απο το ίδιο το συγκρότημα. Αφήνοντας το οπαδικό κομμάτι, ανεξάρτητα αν σου αρέσει ή όχι η μουσική τους, διαβάζοντας αυτό το βιβλίο δεν έχεις παρα να εκτιμήσεις και να σεβαστείς το πάθος και το όραμα μιας παρέας νέων(ουσιαστικά του Σάκη Τόλη) που με σκληρή δουλειά, και απόλυτη αφοσίωση στη μουσική , κατόρθωσαν τόσα πολλά. Απο την underground σκηνή , τα mainstream μονοπάτια και την παγκόσμια καταξίωση, μα ακόμα 《δεν υπηρετούν》!

Born in 1980 and being greek, Rotting Christ was the first personal discovery I made in the metal scene, Thy Mighty Contract being the album that introduced me to their mystical, occult, sound. I was immediately captivated.
I have been a fan ever since, feeling -in a maybe stupid way- proud that a greek band produced music of such high standards.
This book made me admire them even more as it gives an insight to the struggles they have been through in order to keep doing what they loved.
Keeping a down to earth attitude even though they are considered the founders of the greek black metal sound and one of the cornerstones of the so called second wave of black metal, this book although it has a strong “behind the scenes” feeling, doesn’t demystify the band but rather makes the reader feel they are part of the Rotting Christ family.
For all us romantics, this is a biography of high nostalgia value.

Who cares what anyone else thinks, Rotting Christ is a band that has endured over all these years by staying true to themselves. Sakis is a master of intelligent songwriting and producing. Themis is a Greek God pounding away at the drums and driving rhythm into the soul of the music. I met Sakis at one of his shows in Portland, OR. He is as genuine to his fans as he is to his music. He put his heart into this book and battled some of the demons of his past. If you are new to Rotting Christ, this book will show you just how dedicated Rotting Christ is to thier music and ideals.

Book was excellently written for being written by a non-author. There are plenty of details and so many inspirational moments of Sakis and Themis’ lives but there are so many music- related details that as a person who only listens to music , I couldn’t understand and I felt lost (if I was into music, I could understand). I love the talks with the old band members and how it was all was all combined and I just love it ! We love rotting Christ !

Tanto si conoces la historia de Rotting Christ como si no, esta lectura es obligatoria porque se desvela información que no es fácil de obtener. Los hermanos Tolis lucharon duro, se la jugaron varias veces y, finalmente, lograron crear una banda de estatus en la escena del metal extremo griego.
Totalmente respetable, tanto como el testimonio de todo un genio de las letras metálicas como es el señor Dayal Patterson.

Εξαιρετικο αν εισαι φαν του Συγκροτηματος ή αν θες να μαθεις για το πως ενα συγκροτημα απο την underground σκηνη της ΕΛλαδας με ο,τι αντιξοοτητες αυτη συνεπαγεται, με μονο εφοδιο την πορωση για αυτο που εκαναν, εφτασε να κανει παγκοσμιες περιοδιες.

Very well written and easy to read at the same time. Great work by both Sakis Tolis and Dayal Patterson. It depicts with a lot of details the history of the band from the beginning until today.
