[series review] I read Tonogai's more popular series, Doubt, back in 2020, and I thought it was *fine* but ultimately it didn't live up to the hype for me. Because of that, I really held off on reading Judge, because I expected it to be more of the same, but probably not as good.
I mean... at least I was half right?
The two are very similar in tone and vibe. They're both dark and gory and take place in gross, grimy locations. BIG Saw vibes. But Judge is SO much better. Like, I'm-tempted-to-give-it-five-stars better. It helps that there is a bit of a Danganronpa-esque element to it; a battle of wits that Doubt didn't really have. That'll always get me.
Similar to Doubt, this is a very quick read, but I found it engaging the entire way through. It kept me on my toes and kept me guessing the whole time, and there were so many excellent twists and turns all the way through.
At the end of the day, it IS a death game, and if you've consumed a lot of death game stories (hi, hello, it me!) you'll certainly recognize several of the staple tropes and cliches of the genre, but I think they were handled really well, and done in a way that did not feel predictable at all.
I'll need to stew a bit on my rating, but it's 4.5/5 at minimum. So good.
