So my husband gifted me a kindle for my birthday. Of course the first book I purchased, within minutes of opening my fgift, was No apologies, by women's web. I'd been really eager to read this and now that I'm done I'll move on to it's predecessors. Yep there are two more.

I don't usually do book reviews but this book is like the need of the hour. To be read by men and women alike. For men to get a real insight into what life can be like for a woman. Know this, these stories are real. For women, I feel, it will help give courage, and a sense of being less alone. Also maybe someone, can pluck up the courage to do as they wish after reading this book. Sometimes we all need a little push. For women this maybe it. Defy the authoritarian figures, which mean very little, and do what makes YOU happy.

These are stories of us or people we know. They will resonate somewhere deep within and strike a chord. Everyone needs to read this. Not should read this, MUST read it. It's really reasonably priced too do no excuses. It's a quick read it's true but you will find yourself wanting to re-read the part about the nervous woman in the cab or the poor widow trying to get an education or the aged daughter in law trying to defy her even older mother in law. Just days before I read this I had a patient who was 67 and terrified of her mother in law, who was 92 and clearly not about to quit. Her daunting ways. Then I read this and thought, Jesus why so scared? Just try to take no crap for once see. No one will give u any.

Do buy it, do read and absorb it. It will stay with you for a very long time.

Title: No Apologies, A Women’s Web collection

Author: Various women authors

Length: 106 pages

Genre: Short stories, Fiction

My rating: 5/5

Summary:

This book is a collection of 18 short stories penned by various women authors depicting decisions taken by Indian women characters and the consequences.

My Take:

While browsing through various titles in kindle I came across this intriguing one and decided to give it a read. I absolutely fell in love with this book. Each of the stories penned are very different from one another. The stories are really short and fast paced ones. One can complete this book in just one sitting.

The stories truly depicts the ideologies of Indian society and how women struggle to come out of it without acceptance. Some stories are hard hitting, some pleasant, some giving one food for thought.

It’s true that women are often judged for the choices they make and because of this they are scared to live life as per their wishes. We always seek acceptance of the society rather than being happy with our wishes. It’s time to change.

I would definitely recommend this book to all my women friends. The characters in each and every story are very relatable. Some stories create an impact and will remain with you for a long time. Some of the stories had terms which I couldn’t understand as it pertained to specific dialect in India but can be ignored as it doesn’t hamper the understanding of the story.

An absolute lovely book

In No Apologies, we get to read realistic stories that put forth to readers how women in our Indian society are expected to feel apologetic for situations they might not actually be accountable for, and also we get to see with warmth why and how they need not do so. I say with warmth because the writers carry a sense of maturity in their words that’s devoid of arrogance, ego or pride.

The stories are not about feminism, men vs. women or patriarchy as one would guess in this context. Rather, they are more about the underlying emotions of womanhood which are subjected to the ‘ideal standards of living’ imposed upon women for centuries, and even more about those moments in each character’s life when they come to confront the 'norms' face-to-face.

The book can help women who are confined within their roles in everyday life; women who are confused if what they feel from within is right or wrong and women who want an inspiration to move ahead in the direction of their dreams. And of course, irrespective of gender, people who are open to re-define or fine tune their perceptions of a myriad of life things can find the book valuable.

Germaine Greer said: 'Women live lives of continual apology. They are born and raised to take the blame for other people's behavior. If they are treated without respect, they tell themselves that they have failed to earn respect. If their husbands do not fancy them, it is because they are unattractive.'

With 18 short stories, No Apologies is a refreshing take which aims to shatter this stereotype. The protagonists in these stories may be demure or rebellious, witty or curious, brazen or fearful, but once these women find their strength, there is no holding them back. And they do so without any apology.

Each story in this collection celebrates a woman's individuality and is an inspiration to the life we should aim to lead. To shut out the voices in our head that hold us back and not feel sorry about it.

It is women, first and foremost, who need to change, to break free of this stereotypical upbringing, before we can expect the world around us to change.

Every story is a celebration and an inspiration for women to take charge of their ambitions, dreams, and their lives unapologetically.
Loved each story and can't decide which is my favourite.
