When Lara and her dad discover a scared black puppy in an alleyway while walking their dog Oliver, Lara desperately wants to take him home and look after him. Her dad isn't so sure.
But Lara can't stop thinking about the poor puppy and goes to find him again. She convinces her dad to let him stay and names him Jet. But when Jet spends all night howling, Lara's dad isn't impressed. Night after night, the wailing continues, until it begins to look like Jet may need to go to the animal shelter. Is there anything Lara can do to help Jet sleep?
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
Lara and her dad come across a scared black puppy while walking their dog Oliver. Lara’s dad doesn’t want to take it home, but Lara takes matters into her own hands, and get the little puppy home. After that things start to get a little more complicated.
In my view this book is yet another example of what Holly Webb is very good at as a writer. This is a children’s story about dogs and owning dogs. The story has a bit of drama, bit of humor, and a whole lot of sweetness, without resorting to disneyfication. The fact that the dogs in her fiction are still dogs, and not little furry humans, is a good thing.
This is the latest in the Pet Rescue Adventures. My daughter loves these sweet pet stories. This one is about a little girl who finds a puppy and then has to figure out how to get him to sleep through the night, anyone with a new puppy or a new sibling at home with emphasize with this dilemma. Adorable puppy, clever problem solving, and a happy ending - what more could you ask for in a book?
It is no secret that I adore any of Holly Webb's books but she has honestly outdone herself with this book! I love Lara and her Dad's relationship and how life is not perfect for her; her parents are separated and although the book only mentions it briefly it is nice not to see a book where everyone is one big happy family and is perfect because that is not relatable or real life!
Lara and her Dad first met Jet while walking their dog Oliver one Sunday evening; as they pass an alleyway Oliver refuses to budge and leads his owners to a malnourished stray puppy who is terrified of people (who can blame him?) When Lara and her Dad attempt to capture him he runs away and refuses to come out until they leave but Lara cannot stop thinking about the poor puppy in need of her help so after school one day Lara with the help of her friend manage to lure him to her house with bits of food.
Lara's Dad is rather cross with them at first because how did they know that the puppy would not hurt them or what other dangers may of been lurking in the alley way. I like this because it teaches kids about some different dangers and adds realism to the story.
Poor Jet becomes terrified at night without his cardboard box and forces Lara to sleep on the kitchen floor making her exhausted for school; Dad became really cross and told Lara he would be taking Jet to the shelter causing Lara to run off and find out what Jet really needed (A cardboard box) so that Jet could live with them happily.

My favorite character was Jet. Because he was a little puppy and he was super cute. He was cool because he lived in an alley. He slept in a box and really wanted to sleep in the box again. After he had gone home with the family.
Jet surprised me because he wanted to go back to the alley to sleep. He could not sleep while he was at the new families house. I was surprised that Oliver was able to find the puppy by smelling him out too.
I would not change the ending because I liked it how it was. Lara and Jet went back to the alley to find the box that Jet used to live in and when they found it Jet went to sleep. Then her dad and Oliver found her there with Jet so dad gave Oliver to her and he picked up the box so they could all go back home.
Here's a little family that found a lost and confused pup. This pup was completely lost and alone in the world.
When i read this book for Nova, she sat with confused and mixed emotions running through her. It was sad, but also very comforting and the pages just flew. You really wanted to know how it would end! Nova gives this book full marks!!! 5 out of 5 and more if she could!!!
