All she wanted was a normal life. Heaven and hell had other plans.

Joey Benton is the mortal child of an angel; a title that sits heavy on her shoulders. She has no interest in serving Heaven until a handsome stranger forces her to question the world around her.
Ursus, an Archangel, doesn't want another charge--especially one so defiant as Joey. Protecting her from Hell might very well be the biggest challenge of his immortal life. But when his feelings for Joey get in the way of his duty, it's a challenge he refuses to lose.

‘Children had it right – monsters did lurk under the bed, waiting for the moment we were alone. Only they weren’t out to scare. They were out for blood.’

“Earth, nurtures life. Air, disperses life. Fire, warms life. And water, brings life. But blood, mortal blood, is life.”

Living her mortal life as human, Joey Benton – who hates her original name and goes by Joey – has the blood of a creature more than human because Joey has always been more than just human. She is half angel. Ever since her mother died life became very strange for this red headed photographer…blackouts, migraines and seeing creatures that shouldn’t exist are part of Joey’s atypical life, and nobody knows this secret but her. Privy to these demonic creatures – who appear to be more just hallucinatory – can’t just be manifestations of her stress…can they?

‘Shadows lurking within the shadows, shades moving in the dark rather than with it. I spent many nights dreading the moment when these specters would grow tired of watching and step out of the blackness, bringing my worst nightmares to life.’

‘I was a mortal angel with the ability to see evil’s face.’

After possibly the world’s worst morning, her day only continues to grow more problematic…you see, what would you do if an Archangel came to your place of work claiming that he is now assigned to shield you, that you will be his charge because you are ‘Blessed’ , and he needs to protect you from demons that are out to get you? …Well I’m sure you wouldn’t ask him to drop his trousers, which is exactly what feisty Joey does!

‘He didn’t exactly curtsey and apologise on his way out the door. Or move. Rather, his gaze slid down my chassis in a lazy perusal that reminded me of a lion sizing up a gazelle as it loped unsuspectingly into his field.
Lions ate gazelles.’

Joey is blunt and unsharpened, but those traits wring out the best kind of humour from her. Joey’s thought processes are full of mirthful banter, the girl doesn’t even need an interlocutor to bounce conversation off of because she has the kind of naturally outrageous humour that snags attention from the first page. Though she has flaws and doesn’t always engage in the best kind of consideration, explicitly her incredibly loose mouth – which invariably spills words like a tap runs water - her self-mockery and frustration of the minute yet troublesome patterns of daily life make her a relatable character.

“Now how would you like this to play out?”
As a romantic comedy rather than the horror story it’s shaping up to be.

Joey and her best friend Shula are co-partners who run a photography studio together. Punctilious, measured and intuitive, Shula has traits I find in myself – especially list making! - but saying that, my fumbling also knows no bounds much like Joey – but Shula’s sense of preparedness and logic is a merging balance to Joey’s eccentric quirk and often thoughtless decisions, thinking with her mouth rather than her brain. Shula is a side character, one I didn’t know enough about to build an opinion of other than the fact that she is a loyal friend to Joey. A side character she is, but she felt less than that because her presence is brief, not capturing her completely.

“You are forbidden, Joey. The mortal child of an angel. You walk both world, yet belong to neither. You see things mortals weren’t meant to see. You know things mortals weren’t meant to know. Those gifts are a birthright you were never meant to have.”

Joey’s life is destined, and she has a part to play in this debacle between Heaven and Hell. The epitome of Hell is searching her out, an interesting Incubus – who I found to be the most drawing - wants to make her his, and her pouting angel Ursus teaches her how to fight to protect herself from what is to come because he might not always be there. This angel doesn’t break rules, and angels aren’t allowed to break rules or be anything other than platonic with their mortal charges, but the seduction of a mortal might be too enticing especially when the woman in question is a taunting humourist who loves to challenge Ursus with her stubbornness…not to mention her non-stop ogling and heated thoughts.

“Yes. We seem to have two modes – bickering or making out. You, for some unfathomable reason, prefer to sling insults. So I taunt you to show moral support, See how good I am to you?”

Pokerfaced, and occasionally warm, Joey is either hit with Ursus’s uncaring demeanour, or caressed with his kind action, but mostly she swelters under the chemistry they share. Their relationship doesn’t particularly feel founded on something deep, rather in the early stages of lust and desire which is perhaps why the romance felt spindly rather than fully-formed, and not entirely adhering considering that this is a paranormal romance book. I liked them both, but there wasn’t enough depth of character for me to engage with them as motivating leads – the attraction is too instant.

“Listen here, happy pants – you may not be human, but you’ve got all our parts, and I clearly got a standing ovation.”

The build-up of Joey and Ursus’s relationship was missing, and what they had lacked depth, the depth starting at base level, hence there was no real build-up. I bought that they had potential as a couple because I can always see potential, but the execution let down a little. The conflict and angst between them also felt baseless. Though the presence of side-characters felt fleeting, not enough time given for me to latch onto them, I expected the leads should have had that full punch- rich with characterisation that overwhelms not underwhelms, because what started as a book that had me already, became a book that left me along the way because the plot felt misleading. This book doesn’t throw heavy amounts of information at you, but I also found that it doesn’t provide particulars..

‘It wasn’t death I feared but the future – a future where demons and angels waged war on Earth. Crossing the threshold placed me dead center of what I wanted to avoid most.’

The twists weren’t twisty enough to elicit shock from me, and the conflict between Ursus and Joey seems more trivial and trifling, rather than realistic and intense. It felt like the story ended at the typical halfway mark of a story rather than at an actual end. What was supposed to be the ending felt like the middle. The epilogue left me in an unresolved state, firstly because Ursus and Joey’s story hadn’t felt like it reached conclusion, secondly because unfastened loose ends were poking me in sorts of places – which perhaps might be addressed in following books, but it does not seem likely as the books that trail this are told from different characters altogether.

“You’ll endure the loss of your life, bribes, destruction, lavishness – whatever it takes to satisfy the devil.”
“What satisfies the devil?”
“Ruin.”

This was a book I chose to read to have some respite from the kind of mentally demanding fantasy tales and turn to some easy romance, which i have been doing a lot of lately. It had its perks and pluses, but all around it was an average read. The book didn’t hold enough danger and risk for me, and with little rising development of the relationship, and not an awful lot happening story-wise I felt my engine losing its petrol, waiting for the story to feed me more and get my engine revving up.

“Oh, little mortal, what makes you think I’d ever let you die?” Her humourless smile chilled. “Do you know? Hell is repetition.”

‘Covet’ by Andris bear is a slow-paced paranormal fantasy with angels, demons and a not-so-human cheeky Joey who rests in the middle, and an easily-riled up angel who isn’t initially so fond of his new charge. ‘Covet’ is full of mirthful writing and lough out loud commentary, and if the author’s humour is anything like Joey’s then I already love her. At times I didn’t know whether I should bellow with laughter or be concerned with the serious situations Joey found herself in simply because of her lively humour, and her humour does soften the edge of a situation that should potentially hold hazard.

“Every choice has its consequences. And every sacrifice…its reward.”

Joey has a youthful spirit, which only accentuates her wit making her appear far younger than she actually is, and I did enjoy that. Joey doesn’t hide from her faults, and she doesn’t hide from her flaws, she knows what she is and pokes fun at her character which made me feel comfortable in her character. For Joey’s stash of one-liners and snarky attitude, Ursus has equal amounts righteous rage and an affronted temper, usually triggered by Joey herself.

Not the best paranormal romance/fantasy but a decent pastime and entertaining.

“You drive me nuts, but I’m lost without you.”
“Here’s to a lifetime of driving you crazy!”
“Hear, hear, pretiosa.”

When Andris Bear contacted me in regards to reading and reviewing Angel Unborn, I had no idea what to expect. Although I love being introduced to new-to-me authors and books, there is always that chance that I will not like the book and then I'm caught as to what to do. I took a chance on Andris because not only did Marquita Valentine, who I love, give her my name, but Andris was just so damn funny and adorable in our email conversations that I just couldn't help but instantly like her. I'm so glad that I took the chance because I LOVED Angel Unborn and can't wait for Angel Unleashed!!! Andris Bear has definitely earned herself a BIG fan in me with this book alone.

I LOVE book dedications and the one Andris wrote in Angel Unborn has to be one of my favorites, especially this part: "To my amazing husband who pray's nightly he's never asked if he is the inspiration for my love scenes, I simply adore you. Don't worry, darling, I'll never tell." So sweet and funny. And then there was this in the Acknowledgements: "And finally, my readers. Every time a reader takes a chance on a new writer, a fairy gets her wings. Or a leopard gets a new spot. However you want to look at it. You are a joy beyond compare and I cherish every one of you. Thank you." I think this tells all you need to know about Andris Bear!! :)

I was immediately drawn into Angel Unborn through the interesting story and entertaining characters. I loved Joey and her snarky attitude and found myself LOL more often than not. (Although I loved her snarky attitude, her comments started to get annoying after a while and I just wanted her to be a little more serious~this was just my personal preference.) I LOVED Joey and Ursus and how they responded to one another. Ursus ~ Sexy Archangel indeed!! *sigh* Oh, and I couldn't have been more shocked by Satan!! ;)
I have to admit that I kind of liked Chamos and would have loved to see more of him~especially if that included Chamos and Shula together!! (heehee) ;) Oh, and I also liked Devi~so funny!!

The twists and turns in Angel Unborn gave me a few nail~biting moments and kept me glued to my Kindle wondering what would happen next. There was also love, HEAT, laughter, tears, sexual tension, fighting, interesting secondary characters, and of course my favorite, an epilogue with a HEA. It's a good thing too because I was worried for a few pages that Joey would not find her HEA. LOL ;)

Angel Unborn was a great start to what promises to be a great series and I am definitely hooked. 4 out of 5 rating. Definitely going into my keeper pile. Thank you so much Andris!!!

Some of my favorite quotes:
There before my blessed eyes stood a TDY: Tall, Dark and Yummy. He was a warrior, Viking, pirate and a mythical God all baked into one perfect, decadent confection. (Joey describing Ursus)

My mouth fell open at the way his black t-shirt stretched over a back broad enough to park my car. And dear God, his jeans, worn low on lean hips, made me wish I was made of denim. He had an ass so round it reminded me of ripe, juicy apples tightly saran-wrapped.
(Joey describing Ursus)

"We're not," grumbled Ursus. I went rigid. "We're not?" Since when? Sure, we'd had a rocky start, but how could we not? He broke in to my house, scared my hair short, and then sparred with a demon. In my living room. Who wouldn't tear ass from him? So yeah, I'd climbed out a window to escape. And called him a few choice names. What the hell did he have to complain about? I'd been stalked, stabbed, and shifted. (Ursus and Joey in response to Devi's question about how they were getting along)

My lips worked, but no sound came out. Chamos wanted to sex me to death and she was jabbing me in the side like a schoolgirl when the quarterback hit the field. No way would this chick pass a psych test. She was off her rocker. Hell, she was off the whole porch. (Joey about Devi)

I should've brought the bag with my extra panties because I was having excessive pants~shitting episodes with these angles.

With my minimal understanding and non-existent decoder ring, that left me in the backwoods of utterly lost.

"Do I have to fit my melon with an alarm system to fend off more of your mental burglary?" (Joey to Devi)

Joey is an entertaining, snarky character who even in her darkest moments thinks the most astounding thoughts. Her attitude certainly captured my attention and there are genuine funny moments in this book. Finding out she’s got an angelic protector in the shape of tall, dark and yummy Ursus doesn’t seem to put her off her stride and she challenges him constantly.
Ursus tries so hard to prepare Joey for those who will come after her but even he isn’t quite sure exactly what Joey is capable of. Here’s where it gets very interesting as Joey becomes a target for the incubus Chamos and he’s working for Satan admittedly but I found his motives and history to be fascinating.
So Demons and Angels and right in the middle Joey. The dialogue was funny, Joeys internal musings were absolutely hysterical at times. Ursus might not want to protect Joey and if honest it’s the assignment from hell but to say more would ruin the surprise. I guess if you enjoy reading about smart mouthed characters and want some sizzle in your story then this book is certainly worth checking out and as I write it’s currently free in kindle.

Well... that started with a bang and ended with a... meh...

Joey Benton is a photographer, working on a male beefcake calendar. So when this hunky, drool-worthy specimen walks into her studio, she does the only logical thing: she asks him to drop his pants!

Turns out, he's not there for the calendar, he's there because Joey is actually part angel and he's been assigned to protect her.

I absolutely loved the start of this book. The writing style caught me by surprise and I thourougly enjoyed that throughout the book.
The snarky banter, the sassy comments and the sizzling tension between Joey and Ursus was just steamy enough for my taste :D

But then the whole incubus/Satan part happened and I just thought that was kinda... meh...
It stretched on for quite a few pages and even though it wasn't really bad, it just didn't hold my attention.
I did appreciate the originality of this novel though and the beginning and ending where really nice, but it's the somewhat boring middle part that makes it only a 3* read for me.

Snarky humor must just be my jam and this story is rife with it. Andris Bear just hit my 'new favorite authors' list like it was a bull's eye. Sometimes finding a good book in Kindle Unlimited is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but every now and then... hallelujah!
Love the characters. Love the interaction between them. Love the story (thank god there were no vampires, am I right). My only issue with the story was how Joey reacted to the death of Ursus. I get that everyone grieves in their own way. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one.. and that is here in this realm with no actual proof of an afterlife, just faith. Joey had seen the proof with her own eyes. Ursus was not lost to her forever. It just seemed like an overreaction. Yeah, I know, I'm heartless. Then she found a way to bring him back. So she did. Knowing she was sentencing him to a life of watching her grow old and die, with an eternity to grieve her passing... just seems kinda selfish. Free will. Trust that there is a plan. Where was her faith?
Anywho... Andris Bear just added a few dozen more books to my 'want to read' bookshelf. I keep reading and that particular shelf just keeps getting longer and longer... go figure.

A fiery little red head, half angel girl who sees demons, falls for angel guy who fights demons... This sounds so familiar... Where have read this before?....

The story wasn't bad, just unoriginal. It's basically a rewrite of Mortal Instruments, but a little more rated R, and maybe even a little more funny. The writing style was good, but there was a lot of character hypocrisy. And I'm totally not into oblivious characters. They seem so dense, so small minded and frankly just annoying to me.

A most fullfilling story.

Loved the story the writing and humor.
So engrossed in the lot didn't realize I was smiling the whole time. I could easily live in this book . Everything about it clicked for me. The colorful language "euphonisms" took a little bit to get used to. I really like this author...yup ...a keeper.

Let me start by saying, I only made it to about 20% on my tablet. The idea behind this story was interesting, but the way it was put together was...yeah...it wasn't, in my opinion.

I came across this ebook on Amazon for free. Now in the past when it comes to reading (or attempting to read), it hasn't always ended with a happy ending. Therefore, I shouldn't have been surprised that a free book could end up being not so great, but one can always hope.

When it came to this particular story, there were so many red flags going off. The first was on the very first page, the second sentence, unfortunately. Yes, I'm referring to a mess-up: "The neurologist had the test results into my hand, looked me dead in the eye..." There were actually several mess-ups within the first couple of pages. Where was the editor? Or beta-readers? Did the author not reread her story prior to publishing it? Seriously, this book needed a good editing.

Joey. What can be said about her? Well, she was annoying. She was also a stupid character with the amount of questionable/stupid comments she'd make. It was like she had no control over herself. For example, when she first meets Ursus. What happened there? We get it! The guy was attractive! Additionally, while I don't care if cussing is in a story, I swear (har har) that she overdid it.

Needless to say, I wasn't a fan of the writer's style of writing. Whether she overused similes, metaphors, or some other example of figurative language, it just got to be too much. It was the same case with some of her descriptions. For example:

"As if they were a burning bag of cow poop." OR "Not wanting to showcase my hella cute matching panty set..." (How did her dress not get mess-up from the monster attack? What about her shoes? What kind of shoes was she wearing to where she didn't get any injuries on her feet? I can't imagine she was wearing tennis shoes.) OR "...I'd already cemented my invitation to the booby-hatch..." OR referring to something as "lickalicious" or "rumpalicious."

Questions/Comments:

Joey encounters the old lady, at the beginning, who ends up dry heaving. For whatever reason, that causes her gorge to rise, leaving her wanting to throw up. Why? And her thinking that the old lady would respond well with her yelling: "You stupid ass, get the hell out of here..." Yeah, I'm surprised the old lady didn't let her help her.

Joey is trying to pull the old lady away from the reptile monster. The old lady is fighting her and doesn't want to go in her direction. Yet, somehow they must have ended up a good distance away (not sure how) because "Between the pounding of its feet" (as though the monster were running), "I tightened my grip and continued walking us backward." So, obviously they weren't running, yet how did they get such a good distance away?

I found it strange that after she went flying through the air from the reptile monster, that she never commented on the claw marks on her chest, only the "skid marks" on her arms. Yet, when she's putting on the sweater, she comments about the claw marks as opposed to the scrapes on her arms.

Joey gets to work and is talking with Shula. Somehow the two guys walking past the window whistle their appreciation when they see Shula. How did they see her exactly though? She was at the receptionist desk which in any business I've ever gone into is usually a good distance away from the front entry.

"My day had already gone by way of the outhouse..." Huh?

"Except today, one of my favorite of the year..."
What?

"Oh, great, he was probably a master lock picker on top of nuts."
???

"I plunged my blade into Chamos' side with a battle cry that would do an aardvark proud."
...

"He returned my glare with one that would do a Siberian frost proud..."

"Then slammed the ever-loving piss out of the door."

"Rather, his gaze slid down my chassis in a lazy perusal..." Sorry but "chassis" is not used correctly in this sentence. Chassis has to do with the framework of a vehicle, not a person's body.

When Ursus shows up in her house, why does she freak out more than she does when she encounters a monster? That made no sense. Just coincidently, an incubus shows up next? And Ursus tells Joey to put her hand on his side? Why not hold her hand?

When she describes the incubus, why does she go on about her "...eighty-nine year old neighbor was looking like a hunk of geriatric love." I was lost here. Did the incubus take over her neighbor's body? Yet, she still thought he was attractive?

Why didn't an angel/archangel come to Joey sooner?

Ursus tells Joey to go put on more clothes. Why did she get upset about that? I mean, they did just make out. So, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, but she ends up putting on the smallest outfit she had...so she could crash at her friend's house? Yes, that makes sense. It also makes sense to run off when monsters are after you and someone has shown up to help you.

It's always exciting to get asked to read a friend's book, and at the same time nerve racking. However, I'm excited to share what I read. Trust me this person is talented and the story is amazing. So, let me share with you a little bit of Angel Unborn by Andris Bear and what I thought of it.

Joey Benton would like nothing more than to be normal, but that's just not in the cards for her. For one thing, she see some pretty scary creatures that might have crawled out hell. Sucks no one else can see them, which makes her look odd to others. Until one day, some TDY (Tall, Dark, and Yummy) by the name Ursus drops into her life, and basically tells her he's there to protect her.

You are wondering what she would need protection from? Demons. Yep, I said demons. You know that would a be pretty big bombshell to drop, but that's not all. However, I can't tell you more, because that would just ruin the story.

Plus, I think this story was pretty darn good. I happen to started it yesterday and I couldn't put it down. And who could with witty one liners and the dialog between Ursus and Joey, truly had me cracking up while reading it. Trust me I got some funny looks at the gym while reading Angel Unborn. I really like the take of Heaven verse Hell. I think that was pretty cool and different. I'm really looking forward to reading more and seeing how it all plays out in the end.

So, if you are looking for a lickalicious unbending hero and a special snarky heroine, you have found it in Angel Unborn. Come on you really want to see angels and demons fighting over who gets to control the Earth. Other than that I leave you today and I hope you are having fun in whatever you are reading.

Heaven and hell collide in this dark but snarky mix of paranormal and urban fantasy. From the opening scene, Ms. Bear's wit shines through, despite the fact her heroine, Joey Benton, thinks she's either loosing her mind or suffering from an inoperable brain tumor. But what else would explain the ugly lizard thing stalking an old lady in the parking lot?

When Joey learns she's not crazy but half-angle, she decides she might like insanity better. Heaven wants her to give up all hope of having a family or a normal life so she can stand with the angels in defense of the evil forces of Hell. And Satan offers her a chance at a normal life if she gives up her soul and makes a certain little sacrifice.

What's a girl to do?

Strong-willed Joey agrees to work with the sexy archangel sent to protect her, but she's going to do things her way. And when the sexual attraction becomes undeniable, Joey doesn't want to be denied.

Ursus doesn't want the responsibility of another charge, especially a smart mouth, independent beauty like Joey. But protecting her from Hell proves an easier chore than avoiding the sexual tension that sizzles between them like a life wire. He vows to not let her get in the way of his duty, but she's a temptation he can't resist.

The dialogue is smart and witty, the sexual tension sizzles, and the edge of the seat action will keep you turning pages to the very end.

This was pretty awesome. Tons of characters. Snark, sass and Plenty that gave me a chuckle. Interesting angels/Demons/satan trifecta going on. Meh on the second...

After a re-read i knocked it down a star. Kind of annoying heroine but parts made me laugh and cry. It wasn't awful but just not fantastic.

Taking a chance on a free kindle read I plunged into a different world. Angel's, banishment, and demons. Joey a witty human or so she thought, her past a shadow land as she never knew her father. Leaving her unaware of half of who she really is. Why? Well simple her father was banished....[read to find out why]. When Joey's mother passes she is suddenly beaten with horrid dreams and hallucinations of none other than the strangest demonic figures that seem so real they leave her gasping for air and her heart racing. Blaming it on stress from her work and loosing her mother she goes on the best she can. [I was sucked into Joey's character for her witty thoughts and comments, her character development was phenomenal to say the least. ] then she met tall, dark and angelic. Ursus the angel guardian sent to protect Joey at all costs...but why? Shes just a smart mouthed girl living in her own crazy world. Until her world comes crashing as she realizes who she is and what the demons are really after....

Interesting story and not hard to read but almost literally, every sentence is a witty analogy. That really got on my nerves. It slows the story having to mentally interpret every sentence. The story does move along well and the passion is well depicted with good taste, too. I don't read much romance, mostly to get a feel for the genre. This is the best use of passion I have read in romance. The dramatic and violent scenes seem to drag on a bit for my taste, but action and drama are there. I'd probably rate it a four if I was really into romance books. There were just too many cutsie analogies, IMHO.

Amazing first book in the series!!
Ursus will have you panting by the end of the novel!!
If you enjoy funny sassy smart ass characters well you have them here. Not to mention super sexy!!

Joey was leading a regular normal life until her mom dies of cancer and she suddenly sees Demons everywhere.
Thrust into a life the supernatural and into the arms of her protector. She has a little difficulty embracing her new life and her new destiny.

You'll love this powerful couple and their colourful friends!!

Rushed

It started so good and then plummeted into stark disappointment.
This isn't a long book, so I'm not sure why it wasn't fleshed out and given room to grow.
It was an interesting idea, but there was no depth, no chemistry, and it was incredibly choppy. The plot was so forced that I cringed and had to put the book down a lot.
Joey got annoying pretty fast. Consequences should be consequences, but the romance was missing like everything.
None of the relationships had any substance.
So I won't read the rest.

So dumb it redefines dumb

How to break it down.
Do women whine like this character Joey? No! We are not like that and how can one be portrayed as a strong female when they whine throughout each obstacle. Either make them weak, or make them strong and independent.
Hell, what hell I went through trying to read this second part of the book, hey I ended up giving it all up and literally screaming, oh hell! Yes it was that terrible.
This book is mediocre.

Amazing

Definitely a different twist in the books of paranormal romance but absolutely amazing! I couldn't put the book down and I'm not gonna lie I didn't cry some! Can't wait to read the rest of the series! I'm definitely in love with this series! The characters and the way they connect are amazing!

An unexpected look at what may lie beyond...

What an incredible approach to a story of angels and demons. I’ve never experienced such a thorough explanation of the dynamics of heaven and hell. That tied with the humor and wit that Joey brings create and unforgettable story. An absolute must read.

Heaven and Hell compete for the same lady

An angel sent to Earth yo protect a young woman he believes to be a mortal. When an incubus approaches her, he finds out she is the daughter of an angel. So the training to use her powers begin. So does the affectionate bras between the two.
