M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.
To learn more about M.R. Forbes or just say hello:
I am very much enjoying this series. The imagination of the author is outstanding. However, this particular book in the series is chock-full of continuity errors. A person will be wearing a battle helmet, then not, then wearing it again. Names of the characters are somewhat haphazard and on a few occasions I was baffled about who the person was being addressed or who they were entirely. Forbes definitely needs at least a proofreader of some skill or an editor. I think Forbes may be making deadlines that don’t allow for a real good once-over. Terrific series, though!
I'm mildly annoyed. This story has so many frickin' flaws and typos and lack of "quiet" character moments and/or developments, but it's so damn interesting that I still have a hard time putting it down. I feel like I wanna shred it up for all the messes it has, still feel like I'm starved for more intimate, meaningful character moments, but dammit, I'm literally held hostage by the premise. This is the third book in and I'm still 100% invested. There's unexpected twists and surprises that I loved. I wanna know what happens. Still. And that kinda annoys me, considering all the distracting typos and sub-par editing jobs.
I like the imaginative turns this particular entry took, now that the Deliverance has landed on a new planet that they know nothing about. The colony of Metro and its leaders are in for a world of surprises, some of it deadly. There are several more characters introduced, most of them throwaways that actually serve more to confuse me as a reader than contribute to the story as a whole. I wish the colony of Metro can be a bit more fleshed out, if for any reason, to add more meaning to Caleb's mission with his Guardians. Everything his team is doing often feels all for nothing since I just don't KNOW anyone well enough to care. And I want to care.
While there's still a heavy amount of action that legit strips away any chance of our characters to feel realistic with basic human needs, this third entry still does take several moments to slow down in order to introduce and develop new ideas and mysteries about the new planet. The slowdowns are often short-lived, generally speaking, but they're at least a bit more frequent than the other two books in the series. I mean, sure I don't know when Caleb and his team have a chance to eat, drink, sleep, shower, or take a piss because of all the continual go, go, go of the action, but hey, I'm still hella intrigued anyway. I was particularly VERY fond of the unexpected plot twists, and a character called "Hal," who I found extremely entertaining.
Now look, though. When I said there's flaws in this thing, I mean it. They were obvious, and they were distracting. The biggest culprit of all was the author's forgetfulness of which characters are speaking or what their names are. I'm guessing he likely had certain names chosen during his rough drafts, then went and changed them later, without catching every single one of them. It's the only thing that makes sense. That's the downside of bringing too many throwaway characters into a story: keeping them straight. I kept thinking I was missing character intros, but alas, no. Just the author confusingly referring to his characters with the wrong name.
Washington, who doesn't speak, had a wonderful yelling moment in this book that no one noticed, which suggested to me his name was used erroneously.
Lasandra "Sam" Dante was called "Ali" at least twice, throwing me off each time.
Doctor Rathbone, who was treating Flores, was later referred to as "Doctor Freese."
Paige, one of Sam's soldiers, was periodically called "Paisley." This was most obvious during a moment when Paige gets hurt with a piece of metal in her arm. She gets stuck, then Paisley (not Paige) accepts Caleb's help in removing it. When he does, Paige screams. A med patch is applied and it's back to Paisley wincing in pain and not Paige. This entire moment took the place within a few paragraphs of each other.
The flaws and complaints I had were all so very frustrating. Had the story not been as intriguing as it as it is in all its sci-fi goodness, I'd likely be VERY unforgiving towards such obviously botched editing jobs. Fortunately, author M.R. Forbes is still giving me quite the fun ride with this story and I'm feeling constant curiosity about how it will end. I just hope it can last.
DR Deliverance has landed. Reaper type monster/-s still present on ship (?) and causing hallucinations to passengers. Governor Stone and his wife Beth sink in despair having lost their daughter and seek misdirected retribution. Hal 2000 appears and joins forces with primates to reach their mutual goal. Innari have found the Deliverance.
It's amazing to see an underqualified person in a managemental role finding out the consequences of his actions. In the same way it's sad to see the grunts bearing the burden of those consequences in place of the actual decision maker, managmental superior. Then again the superior order justification of one's actions has been debunked since Nuremberg trial.
Essex (Earth six) is so much in the Goldilocks zone that the environmental elements are perfectly fine for a person locked in a can thrown across the space for 200 years with whatever immune system they have left after it to wonder about without environmental protection suit. Quarantine? Possible contaminants? Pfff. Vaccines are fake news created by big pharma to sell us fancy flour in pills.
I am ready for suspense of disbelief for a hastily assembled under global societal crash and extinction level event space ship staying operational for 238 years in space, but humans not dying to microorganisms is a step too far. Alien race that's past a singularity event and uses timeline of centuries as a norm is hopeful. But, if a person steps on a rusty nail or gets bitten by an animal, or eats something wrong and doesn't get medical attention he's as good as expired.
Conclusion: 3/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue then bought for repeat listen for 1 credit. Narrated by: Jeffrey Kafer. I hope for a reveal that actually all of Deliverance's passengers have actually been genetically improved, just not to the level Dr. Valentine wanted for her private military company. That would sooth the disappointment I feel towards missing environment protection suits. Hal's time with the reader was too short, I expect it to come back. The strange reluctance from it to abandon the Sgt.'s love interest vessel meant something. Hal become human vibes. I choose to believe, Riley is the protagonist of 'Forgotten Colony' and 'Desperation' had too little of her. Terrible value for the length of the book, buying it with USD- 3.49 $/hour ( 29.99$ / 08 hrs 36 mins ).
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS BOTH FROM THE NOVEL AND THE FORGOTTEN UNIVERSE
Halfway through the Forgotten Colony series. Things are starting to get interesting. Strange, and interesting. A lot of questions and mysteries both from this and the rest of Forgotten sub-series are finally being explained, but at the same time even more questions arise. If anything, Forbes is great at building expectation; there’s very few chapters where the last sentence or two does not reveal something making you want to keep on reading, and the same happens multiplied times ten whenever you reach the end of one of his books. However, and this is also something I felt in Book 2, some things are getting somewhat confusing, as if the author were losing track of some parts of the argument. One thing I did not really understand yet is where the trife that came to Earth really came from. So far, if one thing seemed clear from the rest of the novels in the Forgotten universe is that the Re’lyeh were responsible, but I could swear I have seen this argument blur somewhat at least two or three times in this novel, as it is often implied that the trife actually came from this other planet where the Deliverance landed. Not even the conversation between the two Intellects clarified this to me.
I also spotted some silly mistakes, such as characters’ names suddenly changing from one chapter to another (the doctor who first treats the Guardians, for example, or one of Dante’s Marshalls). In a few other situations, Wash, who is not supposed to be able to speak, seems to be shouting something out loud (where I assume it was Caleb who was supposed to speak). These are not serious mistakes throwing you off the argument, but make some passages really confusing. Forgotten being such a long and interconnected series, it is reasonable thinking that the author might sometimes lose track of some events or characters, especially in action scenes where a lot is happening at the same time, but as I read this I could see Forbes must have been working against a serious deadline.
In conclusion 5/5 at building expectation for the rest of the Forgotten Colony series and the Forgotten universe in general, but 3/5 in clarity and consistency.

I couldn't finish this novel. I really wanted to but, too many proofreading and continuity errors took me out of the story.
Forbes has a really great imagination for storytelling. However, his rush to pump out lots of novels leaves too many errors behind for me to enjoy the story.
As a writer myself, I totally understand the hard work that goes into this work. My hat is off to Forbes for the work, time, sweat, blood and, caffeine intake these series have demanded of him. But, if, as writers, we don't take the time to put out better quality work then, we do a major disservice to our craft and the readers.
I like M.R. Forbes, have happily read many of his books. This one is just unreadable. There are so many grammatical errors, run-on sentences and haphazardly constructed paragraphs that it reads like the first draft of what could one day be a good book. I can surmise that Forbes was under tremendous pressure to meet a deadline that he simply sent the work in undone. I managed to get half way through before i just had to give it up. I guess I'll never know how this story ends but that is the lesser evil...
This is the third book in the series and things are becoming clearer. The ship has arrived but where have they arrived? It's definitely a planet but are there people there? This book has a lot of the excitement from the first couple of books. Things really start to get interesting now there is a planet involved. You'll have to read the book to find out about the planet. I'm the meantime, I can't wait to get to the next book in the series. Read and enjoy!
This one is entertaining, fast paced and filled with twists and turns like the previous 2 books in the series.
However, some of the decisions made by the cast of characters left me scratching my head. It's also worth noting that there isn't much character development to any of the cast. There is 1 "new" character that's actually very interesting but its potential was wasted in the end. That made the experience felt drier and it didn't engage with me like Book 1 and 2 of this series.
Have enjoyed your first three books in the forgotten colony , because of the twists and turns in the plot . It is definitely a page turner ! I have also read the books that have sheriff Duke as the key character , great read as well . Looking forward the next installment ( Destruction ) of Forgotten Colony , keep up the the good work . Stu
Amazingly good third book. Mom stop action and adventure. Greedy politicians feverishly holding onto power, super arrogant aliens hell bent on destroying humanity. Add to that hunters designed to hunt humans into extinction and you have a book that's hard to put down. I'm looking forward to more from this series.😊
Third book in the series, and questions are answered and new ones appear. The colony ship has landed on the new world, and discovers there are secrets to this planet that must be answered. Sgt Caleb Carr and his team set out to explore, and find new enemies, old enemies, and other secrets. This has turned out to be a fun set of books to read, and recommend to any fans of military sci-fi.
I'm really getting into this universe and the complex intertwined stories and species that exist within it. It was good to see some new characters introduced in this book, one that i absolutely hate and can't wait for him to hopefully die!
Another great book in the forgotten colony series. Straight on to book four!
I wanted so bad to like this book but the grammatical and spelling mistakes are just too numerous. The names are consistently confused, like the author doesn't even know his own characters. The storyline is good and I will continue to read the series but I just can't give a good rating. I am still confused as to what Sheriff Dantes first name is....
This book mainly focuses on Caleb and Company exploring their new home planet, and meeting those that are already there. Not enough seems to be revealed, and there is just a lot of fighting. It's not bad, but not my favorite type of study.
The ending as is usual for this series is great, setting up the next story.
After reading two other series by this author I wasn’t convinced he could do it again. Man was I wrong. A new set of characters and circumstances. A twist on the fight for supremacy between humans and aliens. The science is strong and the characters deep and complex. He kills off some of my favorite characters, but adds others quick to fill the space.
I took a break from the Sheriff Duke series and picked this series up. I'm glad I did. M.R. Forbes does a great job at developing characters, world building, and telling the overall story.
This series is has a separate group of characters and is great on it's own. Really enjoyed the series, and Book 3 is no exception.
It’s about to get real when the Governor Stone discovers that they are not alone. Plus the AI’s are dead and that leaves the Vultures on their own to try to reason with humans who look like them, but do not think like them. I have not been able to put this series down since the trife ran rough shod over Earth 200 years ago.
Keeps moving the story on, the pace is full-throttle so there’s not much character development. There are some spelling errors, and even a wrong character’s name used accidentally. I would assume this is self-published, or minimally edited, but that shouldn’t ruin the whole book for the armchair critics out there.
As the story returns to the planet side we gain new cartoonish characters - The duplicitous politician; the loyal sheriff; the inscrutable AI. Many revelations are volunteered, with little effort; through expositions, which is a shame, as the reduction in pace left more room for less ham fisted plot development. Overall, though, easily the best in the series - a weak 4 stars.
As with the previous two audio books, Jeffrey Kafer did a tremendous job narrating. I believe there are two more books in this series, but this is the end of the line for me. I truly enjoyed the characters and their space war, however, I found the battles in this book repetitive, some points belaboured, and even a few of the characters' name kept changing.
Once again I enjoyed reading the 3rd installment of this saga. I'm looking forward to Book # 4. Again the author left me hanging on where we go from here.
Another round with Caleb and finally some answers about the xenotrife and their purpose. I cannot wait to see how Forbes wraps up this awesome tale in the next installment.
Finally, an author who can tell a story and knows how to use punctuation. So many authors have a decent story but don't remember anything about basic English class and punctuation, ruining their stories. Forbes knows his stuff!
Just when you think it's safe... If I've learned one thing from this series, it's that the trife are always. Always there, always new, always hunting. The twists in this book are something to behold, for sure. Excellently done!
Book 3 picks up after the Deliverance lands on Essex. Cabeb and what's left of the Guardian's are forced to flee after being double crossed by the governor. The planet has a lot of surprises waiting. I liked this book better than the first two more action.
Once again, a totally entertaining foray into the Forgotten universe. Getting the next one now and looking forward to some great escapism from this universe and Covid!
Wow,,, constant intensity was my experience of this book… each book gets better and better. Full of surprises and having no idea what could possibly allow for anyone to survive. A must read!
Fast-paced, action-packed drama. Caleb Card not only has to fight aliens but fellow humans who look only after their interests to the detriment of their fellow space travelers.
What can I say, this book series just keeps getting better and better. Just when you think you have it figured out another twist occurs. All I can say is keep reading!
