"Well written, action packed and interesting. He makes a unique new world. I Can't wait to read the next book!" Beth, Amazon Reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"I’ve really enjoyed this series so far! It’s been a long time since I’ve read a fantasy novel that I became emotionally invested in and kept me up late reading. The plot is a fun can-they-save-the-world adventure and this second book was just as good as the first." Megan, Goodreads Reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"An excellent continuation of the series. I can't wait to Read the third book. There were a lot of character groups going on different directions to do their part. I loved it though. My favorite fantasy series this year." The Impending Night was the second book in Jon Monson’s series, The Sun and the Raven. An opportunity for a good second book, it went nowhere. It should have been called the Upending Night. I truly enjoyed the first book, which led me to read this one. The main characters Aydiin and Byanca set out to find the seven stones of the divine so that they may save the world from darkness.

On a positive note, the storyline was still interesting. Monson wove several minor characters into intriguing sub-plots that could have completed a well-rounded story…given the chance.

I was so disappointed as how the author ended the book. There are cliffhangers, of which I’m not fond of anyway, and then there is cutting the story off in mid-stride. I felt like I was on a date with my best girl. The date was okay and I was looking forward to the kiss goodnight. I walk her to the porch, closed my eyes to move in for the kiss, and instead of a kiss, I got the crap slapped out of me, the door slammed in my face and the porch light immediately turned off. It was that abrupt. I seriously went back and forth several times on my kindle flipping pages to see of I’d missed something.

I know what the author was trying to accomplish but he failed miserably. I felt like he took the book to a certain point, stopped to go grocery shopping and upon his return, opened the file and typed…The End. Instead of feeling a sense of intrigue, I felt robbed. The story was left with so many open ended sub-plots and the main plot just dangled and was then immediately severed. No transition, no segue, just…The End. There’s no mention anywhere of a book 3, leaving the reader unfulfilled and in my case hugely disappointed.

The relationship between Aydiin and Byanca is always sketchy at best. Married, in the first book, there is no real passion between them. In fact, I kept wondering if they had even consummated their marriage. It’s like two close friends hanging out together and she typically is the decision maker although he is supposed to be this powerful individual that will save the world.

The first book contained numerous editing and grammatical errors. I thought that might be remedied in the second, but it wasn’t. All in all, I was truly disappointed at the way the book was left. I would not recommend this read, especially if you have blood pressure problems. The real shame is, it has so much promise. I will probably not read anymore from this author.

The Impending Night follows Aydiin and his wife, Byanca, back to her home city. If the first book was a classic adventure-y fantasy, a tale of a young man on a journey of self-discovery, the second volume is a twisty political fantasy. There are many factions at work in the city, some familiar and some newly introduced. I really enjoyed Adiin and Byanca's relationship in this book. Rather than being predominantly about passion and desire, as so many fictional romances are, their relationship is stable and mature (even though they're young). It's cool to see a married couple that truly care for each other at the center of a story. Their relationship forms a stable base that lets the reader explore the world thoroughly. This book feels a bit slower-paced than the first, as it introduces new characters and new factions in the political games, as well as starting to sketch out the (fascinating) religious system of this world. I thought the genre transition from coming-of-age to political fantasy was more than successful, it really made this second book stand out.

I’ve really enjoyed this series so far! It’s been a long time since I’ve read a fantasy novel that I became emotionally invested in and kept me up late reading. The plot is a fun can-they-save-the-world adventure and this second book was just as good as the first.

We get introduced to so many new and memorable characters in this book; I thought it was great story development. It does end on a cliffhanger, but this is a series of books (at least a trilogy) and doesn’t every good series leave you wanting to know what happens in the next book?

All in all, fantastic and entertaining read and I am really looking forward to seeing what happens next to Aydiin, Bianca, Seb, Barrick, and other characters!
