About the author

Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.

In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.

In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.

Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.

Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

A decidedly mediocre collection of vaguely winter-themed Hellboy universe stories. The main one by Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck about an exorcism gone wrong and Hellboy punching stuff was the weakest of the bunch because we’ve seen that story dozens of times across multiple Mignolaverse titles already, it’s nothing new or interesting. Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá did a story about agent “the Prick” Anders encountering some magical creatures in the woods which was meh, though elevated by the twins’ lovely artwork. The final story in the collection by Tonci Zonjic about Lobster Johnson taking on a couple of mobsters was probably the best of the bunch, but still just okay. Overall, this wasn’t a terrible collection, but definitely not very “special”. For Hellboy completists only.

So we are here once more at the Winter celebrations - not really since I am reading them as we head towards the summer solstice and the longest day - but still they manage to inspire a sense of winter (I do miss the snow and I will doubt I will get to see it again all things considered).

3 more random stories from the wold of Hellboy - the fact that they are comfortable enough to show stories that do not even have anyone recognisable in them is testament to me about how unique and special this story telling is. Just a shame they are so short I guess

Черговий зимовий спецвипуск на цей раз містить в собі три окремі історії від трьох різних команд, сам Анунґ Ун Рама в якості головного героя фігурує лише в першій із них, дві наступні мають місце в інших часах і в шкурах нуарного віджиланте та вампіра по неволі. Отже, давайте до деталей.
“З новим роком Ейво Ґалуччі” створена легендарним дуетом Міньйоли та Стенбека, разом вони працювали над прекрасними серіями “Кощій Безсмертний”, “Сер Едвард Ґрей - Відьмолов”, “Підземелля Франкенштейна” та іншими – всі ці лімітки належать до всесвіту Геллбоя. Описуючи стиль Бена Стенбека я уявляю собі митця що творить у манері Міньоли і Феґредо водночас, він взяв найкраще від обох авторів, включаючи автентичну міміку та фізику Геллбоя і додав своїх органічних згладжених кутів і картуністичного стилю. Стенбеку прекрасно вдається зображувати, як фірмові Міньйолівські тіні, так і заміські пейзажі та архітектуру. Історія ж має місце в Англії, округу Вейкфілд в 1957 році, тут Геллбой ще відносно молодий, але вже скептично відноситься до спіритизму та викликання духів. Обігрується одвічна проблема з жабами (в Майка пунктик щодо них), а також згадується такий собі професор Ранк (тут вже можна розбігтися вибираючи між учнем Фройда і німецький окультистом, котрий під патронатом Гітлера шукав Ґрааль).
“Загублені” – від дуету Ґабріеля Ба і Фабіо Муна. Ці двоє широко відомі в комікс індустрії, як автори айснерівського “Казанови” та “Мрійника”, але мало хто знає, що цей дует також створив лімітовану серію на замовлення Міньоли під назвою “Вампір”. Головний герой серії це агент БРПД Саймон Андерс, котрий стає жертвою трьох вампірок і в боротьбі з ними сам стає кровопивцею. Пам’ятаю з яким нетерпінням, ще у 2018 році я очікував на вихід цього коміксу, адже мені дуже сподобався персонаж і тут говорилось про його подальшу долю. Окрім вищезазначеного вампіра в історії фігурує убитий ним граф, ритуали сільських шаманів у масках боґґартів, болгарський фольклор і духи природи у вигляді перевертнів. Намальовано це все пречудово, чого тільки вартує дизайн масок і перевтілення духів. А в кінці на секунду бачимо Геллбоя, котрий разом з напарником Андерса розпитує про нього в місцевих жителів.
“Порожній Стілець” неперевершеного Тончі Зойніча, ох саме цього епізоду з Лобстером так не вистачало зимовим спецвипускам! Нью-Йорк 1930 років, війни між бандами, смішні клички ватажків як то “Зуко Банан” і “Здихля Джо Лінкольн”, гра під прикриттям і головне понад цим усім – караюча клешня правосуддя! “Пфф “Лобстер”. А що “Людина-Мідія”, було зайняте?” - тільки й встигає пробелькотіти один з головорізів, перед тим як його решетить град зрадницьких куль. Але Джонсон не спить, він обов’язково розкриє махінацію і зло буде покаране. На даний час вже вийшло більше п’яти томів з пригодами Лобстера, за допомогою Геллбойверсу Міньйола створив своєрідну монополію на всі свої улюблені жанри, зумівши поєднати їх в межах одного світу. Детектив-горрор? Купуйте “Відьмолова”. Круто зварений нуар зі стрілянинами і розслідуваннями? Беріть “Лобстера Джонсона”. Містика, відьми, фольклор і демони? Вам потрібен “Геллбой”. Пекло на Землі, Апокаліпсис і Велетенські Ящеро-Жабо-Комахи? Купуйте “БРПД”. Друга світова, нацисти, окультизм і таємні технології. Це “Відбійний Молоток”. Слов’янський фольклор і пошуки смерті? Це про “Кощія”. Та що тут говорити, в Геллбойверсі навіть є окремі серії про негативних персонажів, як то Варвара, Лотос і Чорний Вогонь. А коротенькі фрагменти у спецвипусках це тільки трейлери, запрошення до Нового Дивного Світу.
Видання від Vovkulaka, як завжди вийшло хороше з цупкою обкладинкою (чого немає в оригіналі) і хорошим друком, перекладацьких огріхів на цей раз я не помітив і приємно знати, що маємо аж чотири такі випуски, котрі можна читати в будь-якому порядку. А тим часом очікуємо на вихід “Опівнічного Цирку” і “Незвіданого моря”.

Three stories.
1- A medium story. If you think this is a typical story, you're wrong. Mike Mignola wrote this short tale, and he always have a special touch. Once more time, we are in front of another great moment of Hellboy. Mignola didn't draw this pages, but artist is fine and some similar to Mignola's style.

2- A tie-in with B.P.R.D.: Vampire. The most I like: the artwork. The story is just anecdotic, a little incident in the Hellboy Universe.

3- A Lobster Johnson Mafia story. Not bad. Good artwork but nothing special to mention about the story. Correct but not very original.

Tres historias.
1- La historia de una medium. Pero si piensas que esta en la típica historia de sesión espiritista, estás equivocado. Mike Mignola escribió esta historia, y eso siempre garantiza tu toque especial. Una vez más estamos ante un gran momento de Hellboy. Mignola no dibujó estas páginas, pero el dibujante lo hizo bien y tiene un estilo parecido al de Mignola.

2- Se trata de un tie-in de B.P.R.D.: Vampire. Lo que más me gusta: el dibujo. La historia es una anécdota más en el universo Hellboy, sin más.

3- Una historia de mafiosos con Lobster Johnson. No está mal. buen dibujo pero nada especial a mencionar sobre la historia. Correcta, pero no muy original.

This story is about Hellboy reluctantly participating in a seance and it going wrong like he expects it to. I liked that Hellboy didn't save the medium in the end.

Lost Ones
2 stars - It was ok

This was set in Bulgaria and featured a Christmas ritual that led to Hellboy finding out information on a guy named Simon Anders. It was just ok because I don't understand the importance of this character.

The Empty Chair
3 stars - I liked it

This is a Lobster Johnson story with three mobsters trying to plant evidence on their victims to make it seem like Lobster Johnson had actually killed them. It was just a short story but the Lobster still got justice. I love LJ and wish these anthologies had more LJ stories in them.

Тут лише одна історія прямо стосується Геллбоя. Вона про давню традицію однієї родини викликати дух померлого родича на свята. Фінал у неї яскравий.

Друга історія продовжує оповідку про іншого персонажа. І наче розумієш, про що може йтися, але треба шукати продовження і початок.

Третя - про Лобстера Джонсона. Перший омнік про нього я вже оглядав, вона в нього входить, і вона чудово перекладена українською у цій збірці.

Узагальнюючи, можу сказати, що цей “зошит” з трьох і��торії лише розпалює апетит. Хочеться ще. Але ви, мабуть, вже знаєте долю українського видання Геллбоя.
