Accidental Witches #1

Brimstone and Broomsticks

Rate this book
Maintaining the town wards is the only witch-magic Cassandra Perkins performs—well, except for that time she set her ex-boyfriend's pants on fire. But when she gets stuck defending a man who claims to be the son of the devil against assault charges, Cassie finds herself firing up amulets and dusting off her broomstick.

Who knew a demon could be so hellishly sexy? Or that his arrival could cause so much trouble in a town full of werewolves, trolls, and harpies?

Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.

She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.

Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.

A little town of paranormal beings, a reluctant witch, a demon stranded and a bit of problem. Lot of sex talks, but no graphic sex. (I'm kind of disappointed with you, book)

The satyr shrugged. “Suit yourself, bro. There’s a nymph over there giving me the eye, so you’re on your own. The ogres are assholes. Fairies bite. Don’t mess with the dragon unless you don’t mind a few burns. Oh, and avoid the shifters—especially the werewolves. It’s two nights before the full moon, so they’re all itching to fight and fuck, and they’re not particular about which of those they’re doing.”

Short book, fun, the start is good but the ending was rushed with no more in deep explanations and actions. Kind of a salty snack.

I rather enjoyed this author's Imp series, but, except for a few 'stand-alone' Imp books, I haven't had much luck with books outside that series. Certain other things I could say along these lines, but let's move on. Though will note I tried this one because it was free.

Like Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls series, this is a series about heterosexual critters living in a town that is 'safe' for 'non-humans', and more specifically a series about various of these critters hooking up in a series of books. Here the reader is following one specific seven sister family (or, possibly, six sister family), all witches.

This first book is about the eldest, and most powerful of these sisters. A lawyer. A hot-headed lawyer with temper issues. Who is sent into her hometown of Accident (set up by a great-grandmother witch 'escaping the burning times') to provide the legal defense for a human like dude who got into trouble by fighting werewolves (and winning, which is a 'wtf' red-flag in some minds; and definately a red-flag in the werewolves minds (a . . . human made me look bad?), which causes them to press charges against the 'human').

Except the human is actually the literal son of Satan (with 'gramps' being, you know, God). So, a demon. The town of Accident hasn't seen a demon inside the town boundaries before.

Both main POV characters spend a lot of time thinking about (or outright saying it) ripping the others clothing off and humping. A lot. Continuously, throughout the book.

I found the series to be like candy. A delightful small snack that was not as fulfilling as a full meal. But easy to indulge in here or there. (or, almost literally, all in one gulp; not literally as there was one non-series book I read in between).

While there was a heavy vibe of sex throughout the book, I do not recall any actual explicit sex in this book (or, for that matter, in the series).

Rating: 3.75

An unwilling witch in charge of a town full of supernatural creatures and the son of Satan on vacation. What could possibly go wrong in a town called Accident?

First of all I just have to say: the diligent moderators on Amazon will have a field day with the names in this book. DICKSKIN! I kid you not, lmao ;-) (Dickeheads would fit them better, imo.)

Brimstone and Broomsticks is a lighthearted, humorous UF. Quite enjoyable start to Debra's new series. The two are thrown together when Lucien takes on the resident werewolf pack and lands himself in trouble. Cassie sets out to clear his name and soon finds herself trying to fill the shoes of her dead grandmother, a role she's been unwilling to take on.

Have a thing for random trolls, dickhead werewolves and a sexy son of the devil himself? Try out this new series, I think you'll like it.

All I will say is... his "proposal" leaves a lot to be desired in the romantic department;-) Not *exaaaactly what you want to hear from the man of your dreams. But hey, it may be different for witches;-)

Not something I would usually pick up but it got recommended to me

I gotta say I actually had a lot of fun with this. How can anyone resist a sexy demon named Lucien? The whole world is also very interesting with so many supernatural creatures living in the same town. The mystery also keep me guessing and there are very interesting creatures like trolls, satyr , werewolf and witches running around in this small town

If you’re a devoted Debra Dunbar reader and a fan of her Imp series/world, this one is going to feel mighty familiar. Yep, there’s a demon but this time there is a witch and no angel… maybe. So you’re thinking this is a re-hash of the Imp books, right? If that’s what you are thinking, you could not be more wrong.

I don’t know where to start with what I like about this book – let’s start with its “feel.” While Debra’s previous books have surely not been heavy or hard reading, this one is light and fun. Funny even. The town, Accident, is vaguely similar to Nocturne Falls in another author’s world. It’s a world of open supernatural life and it is full of opportunities for fun and this one doesn’t disappoint. The only shortcoming is that it was over too quick but that is probably because it was so much fun to read it. However, the “shortcoming” is redeemed because you just KNOW that book 2 is coming.

I don’t know how many scenarios the author can make up with the citizens of Accident but I hope it is a lot because I plan to be here to read every one of them. And don’t tell Sam or anyone in the Imp Series but this one is as good as any of Debra’s books! And that’s saying a lot!!!

Good show Debra Dunbar!!! Another 5-star book in a whole series of them.

I'm getting this is supposed to be a Cheesy comedy type of book but I can't stand those types. The names are stupid of most of the characters. The main character of fell in love with somebody within the first couple days I'm eating them and acted like they're going to have some long-lasting romantic relationship. The demon I feel like a love sick puppy brought the whole thing and not like a demon. And the whole town seem to focus on this small minute problems instead of the major problems. The whole thing just felt rushed

Ok so this just bored me. I don’t think the author even really tried 🙄🙄. I looked for a plot, even a semblance of one and other than the the main characters wanting to rip each other’s clothes of and boink the entire book, and the witch not wanting to be a witch but wanting to be a witch but not wanting to be a witch but wanting to… well you get the idea🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ I read all genres, I mean allll kinds, but this was just 👀🙄🙄 why????? Oh well, at least I passed a couple of brainless hours clearing my head after work, so that counts for something 😁😁😁

Once again Debra Dunbar has delivered a series that had me giggling throughout. Great storyline! Wonderful characters! I love the demon on witch...I mean demon and witch action. :-) That's the one thing I've always loved about Debra's books. The protagonist is rarely who you'd expect.

Cassie and Lucien work well together and this is going to prove to be a fun series what with seven sisters to stir up the town of Accident. Seven witches who have finally decided to do what they were supposed to do. Gonna be great fun!

I thought I'd never like another one of her series quite like I adore her Imp Series, but it appears Accidental Witches may actually give Imp a bit of a run for its money!

Very Well Done, Debra Dunbar! You've grabbed me once again and I'm loving it!

This was definitely super cute!

I adore Lucien and Cassie and I even liked the whole group from the anger management class. That whole scene made me laugh out loud.

I actually wish the series continued with more adventures of Cassie and Lucien instead of the sisters each having a book. I'm not invested enough to read about each sister so I'm probably stopping here but I definitely recommend that people read this one at least!

I absolutely love this book. It was so cozy and balanced the focus between the plot and the romance. Lucien and Cassandra's romance had me hooked and was so wholesome. It also felt genuine, and it was nice to watch it grow as a relationship. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a cozy fantasy romance, especially during the fall season.

Cute! I love Debra Dunbar's writing, and this was no exception. I thought the relationship moved quite fast (i.e. they decided to stay together forever and move in and stuff after knowing each other for like three days) but other than that it was funny and I really liked it. I will be on the lookout for more. 4 stars!

Brimstone and Broomsticks is book one of the Accidental Witches series of paranormal romances.

Lawyer Cassandra (Cassie) Perkins is the oldest of seven sisters, descendants of a witch who escaped the Salem witch trials. Their Great, Great….Grandmother set up a town where paranormal beings could live side-by-side under an agreed set of rules; usually everyone gets along, if you ignore a little hyperactivity around the full moon.

When the Devil’s son arrives in town, he lands in jail after a bar brawl. What he doesn’t expect is a no-show from his lift home, diminished supernatural abilities and a lawyer who sizzles with witchy powers.

This was a fun story and the first book in a series. There’s a bit of a mystery and trouble with werewolves, but with seven witches in the family, I’m expecting a whole lot more mayhem and entertainment as the stories progress.

This book moved super fast, felt somewhat juvenile and read more like a novela. Everything happens over the course of 2-3 days! The character building was non-existent and the two main characters felt forced.

Cassandra doesn't want to use her powers - hasn't used them. She feels if she uses them then she'll have to take care of the town and she's done taking care of others since her mom left her to raise her siblings. So she's pretty firm in these beliefs.

Yet all it takes is one good looking guy to show up and without any struggle at all - she's ok with being the witch she is. hmmm..

Lucien is satans son. A demon who can't use his powers in Accident (the town Cassandra lives in) yet without any explaining he's able to help her use her powers? hmm..

And literally within hours these two have hooked up. Even though Cassandra is worried about a man cheating on her and Lucien never once tells her he'll be faithful. In fact when she asks him about him becoming both physically AND emotionally committed/involved he just tells her to to her thing and he'll do his thing to her later that night.

All in all this was a huge bust! Total waste of my money and wish I hadn't bothered with it! Big disappointment as I enjoyed Debra Dunbars IMP series.

I won't read this one any further.

I’m actually conflicted about this one…

Characters:
Cassandra Perkins – age unknown although she’s the oldest, attorney.
Lucien – age unknown, he’s a demon so typical demon job.

Summary:
Enchanted supernatural town with wards to protect those inside it and outside. Cassandra is the oldest and is charged with caring for the town, she doesn’t want the job. Lucien is the son of Lucifer (SIGH) and is on vacation. Werewolves are causing trouble and Cassandra has to make a decision if she wants to step up to the obligation or keep shirking it and pouting.

My Review:
I haven’t read a book in over a year, so I devoured this one. I was ready to start reading again. When I finished it, I felt all warm and fuzzy. A few hours later? I’m not feeling so warm and fuzzy. The book has some overused cozy paranormal tropes that don’t land solidly.

Town magically protected? Check.
Reluctant witch? Check.
Werewolf “baddies”? Check.
Devilishly handsome demon? Check.
Gratuitous cursing and sex? Check and check.

Before I break down my review, I want to preface this with I didn’t hate the characters. I just struggled to care for them. Between Cassandra whining so much and Lucien being so underdeveloped, I found them a little annoying and unbelievable as a couple. Also, the author leaned in so heavily on the standard tropes that I pretty much could guess what was going to happen next. The ease with which Cassandra fell into bed with Lucien was jarring. Where was the romance? Where was the chase? It was so bad that he even made a joke about how quickly she tumbled.

I think the book needed to be longer. The characters needed more development. The story needed to be tighter.

I don’t know if I will read anymore books in this series. I need to let it marinate a little more.

The book wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either.

Location:
Typical magical town that’s protected from “humans”.

Romance Rating:
While the book isn’t sexually graphic, the cursing is jarring and often feels out of place. As if the author wanted to make the characters tough somehow with cursing, it didn’t work for me. There is almost no romance, so it’s not believable. There is a HEA but it left me feeling dissatisfied because I wanted more, more character development, more romance development, more story development.

A town filled with magical creatures like werewolves, vampires, witches, faries, trolls etc. and a demon comes to visit, the son of Lucifer to be exact. He stirs up some trouble at the local bar and a lawyer, who also happens to be a witch, has to take on his case probono. Most witches were burned during the Salem witch trials so theirs not many left in the world and this witch catches the Demons attention. The two of them go to anger management class together and have building tention. Then suddently the Demon is framed for murder! But why would he want to kill a werewolf, and when would he have had the time? It's up to the witch to find out.

This is a cozy murder fantasy story, very low stakes. I didn't really care for this at all. Starting off with the audiobook the demon and the witch sounded exactly alike so it was really hard to tell who was talking or whos perspective we were in. Then the story was meh. The murder didn't happen until like 70% through the book, the entire case the witch had to take on was from a bar fight that no one even ended up pressing charges on. It just couldn't hold my attention. I only finished this because it was so short and the town felt cozy. If it wasn't for that I probably would have just DNFed this. The town of magical creatures I think was the most exciting part of this.

Tropes: Demon; Witch; Werewolf; Faries; Fae; lawyer; Murder; Urban Fantasy; Cozy; Shifters; Small town; Fade to black; Duel POV; Fall Vibes

I received a free copy of this book from the author and I totally enjoyed it! It’s a great kick off to a new world and it makes me curious to see how this series plays out and if we’ll follow Cassie’s POV or get to know other citizens of this quirky town.
Cassandra Perkins lives in a town called Accident and she’s pretty much a magical bad ass but laying low as a supernatural lawyer. A sexy demon comes to vacation in town by mistake and starts causing trouble. Now Cassie is stuck being his lawyer and the guy he got into a bar brawl with disappeared. It’s up to Cassie and the demon Lucien to figure out what’s going on.
Great beginning to a series. Lots of memorable characters and interesting magic. I’m curious about more of this world. I hope we can follow each of the sisters, I really liked Bronwyn’s and Cassie’s interactions.
There was a lot more romance compared to imp and the relationship progressed quicker than I usually like but I enjoyed it all the same.
There was a lot of the signature humor that I’ve come to enjoy with this author, and the world is creative and interesting. All in all, a good start to a new series and I will definitely read the next one.

This book distinctively gives off an impression that it was just published too early.
Especially the ending, which just feels like the author either run out of steam or just got tired of writing this specific book, and instead of actually writing out the important parts of the ending skipped over and summarized them with a few sentences.

It has just enough plot and story to make you wish it was actually developed properly :(
It could be a good silly paranormal romance comfort book if only it had a bit more substance.
It has some fun ideas and characters, on one hand, but on the other it also has the son of Satan who has absolutely no personality other than enjoying beating up sinners and instantly wanting to provide the heroine with his absolute and eternal devotion (=love, sex, unlimited power, practically immortality, and and everything she can wish for instantly and without hesitation).

At first, seeing all the insta-lust in the beginning of the book I thought it would be one of those porn pieces that mascarade as fantasy romance, but I this book doesn't actually have any heavy explicit stuff, which is definitely a plus.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)

How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see *s differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Not much of a story

A review I do not want to write. Remember reading stories by this author years ago and liking them. This is far from that experience. Maybe I just didn´t connect to the story, but it feels really slim on every category. A town where supernaturals can live in peace. As worldbuilding goes, this is a start. But it just does not go any further. 3 stars is kind, as this is the best part of the story. The mystery of the story does get so few lines I could not make up my mind one way or the other. There are pretty much only 3 persons in the story that get more than a few lines, the heroine, her boyfriend material and the guy who got almost killed. How can I solve a mystery when I don´t know more people in the story? Or as good as. As for the narration, I really like the narrators voice, but ... it is monotone. I thought the story started with the heroine, took a while to figure out it was the boyfriend material. Enough said.

Highly entertaining

This book provides a new twist on the the age old question, where do demons go for vacation? If you're Lucien, son of Lucifer, and your maybe buddy Charon says he'll hook you up, you wind up in Accident, a town founded by witches which became a haven for supernaturals. While in Accident, in its jail precisely, Lucien meets Cassandra, eldest living descendant of the founding witch. In this universe, there is a special connection between witches and demons. Lucien is well aware of this fact, Cassandra, never having met a demon before, has no clue. This fact leads to all sorts of interesting situations. The characters are well developed and amusing. The world building is top notch. If you like paranormal romance that doesn't take itself too seriously, you really should check out this new series.

3.5 stars that I rounded up to 4. Good book. Good characters. Good story. Quick and easy read. Good first in a series with potential for future books. A bit of insta-lust, but not quite that easy. The book moves at a good pace and was entertaining throughout. The ending wrapped up rather quickly. I would have liked the author to have expounded on one of the final confrontation scenes rather than just using one paragraph to tell us how it went down, specially since I’m fairly sure that little plot will blow up in later books. That right there lost a whole star on my rating. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for sequels though. Oh, and if you’re looking for sexy times, this isn’t a book for you. Yes they do get it on, but it’s tiptoed around. They make out, they get naked, the go into the bedroom....and wake up the next morning. It’s very PG1-13. LOL.

The vacation from hell

A great little read. Nice plot that reminds me of the Paris, Texas series - a small magical town that has it's fair share of troublemakers and peacekeepers. Good strong characters with someone for everyone - plus it has a really unique view of demons and the way they relate to witches.
She has just been handed a new case. A newbie has come into town, claiming that he is Lucifer's son and having survived and given a good accounting of himself against 4 werewolves. No-one actually believes his claims but the fight was very real and one of the werewolves has even asked the police to charge him. House arrest, another fight, a blood stained room, werewolves who think that they are above the law and taking on the mantle of leader due to the 'love' of a demon. Will she finally accept her responsibilities? Will the werewolves power be contained?

2.5 stars. It was Ok, I guess. Not much happens, until the "murder", 60 something percent into the book. And from there, it's more focused on Cassandra and how much she doesn't want to be the witch in charge. It got tiresome. Everytime we're in her POV she'd mention that in some fashion. Lucien felt underdeveloped, and I couldn't understand why he wanted to stay with this woman. It felt like whichever witch he happened to lay eyes on first would have been perfectly fine. It just happened to be Cassandra. So not a very believable romance. The mystery was meh, and it was a mystery just because we readers don't have many of the relevant facts. And even then the only"surprise" is the why.
To sum up, underdeveloped characters, whiny fMC, unbelievable romance and ok-ish mystery.

Brimstone and Broomsticks was such a cute listen. The book was about Lucien, a demon that decided to go to the small town of Accident, which was founded by a witch during the witch hunts. Lucien ends up getting into a bar fight with a werewolf, who then decides to press charges. Cassie bailed out Lucien from jail who happened to be his lawyer, was trying to get the charges dropped so that he could leave the town and forget everything thinking he was a human. Even though Lucien kept on telling Cassie that he was a demon, she didn’t believe him, still thinking he was human and got some lucky hits on Clint the werewolf. Sometime during the middle of the audio Cassie finally believed that he was a demon after she saw his wings, horns, and tail.

A Bit Rushed But Still A Fun Read

This novel has a lot of very good ideas at play, very clever. It's just that I think that the story is told too quickly. I knew exactly what happened as far as the mystery went, and I just do not feel that Dunbar put her best into this one. That, however, doesn't mean it's not worth reading. Dunbar has a boundless imagination and a gift for humorous twists. I enjoyed reading the book. I think that the second book will have more meat to it. But I stand by my four stars, which are still a good rating IMHO. It's worth reading, especially if you are a Dunbar fan.

As Always I Wish Happy Reads to All from the Unapologetic Book Junkie 🙂!
