Goddess with a Blade #5

Wrath of the Goddess

Rate this book
Rowan Summerwaite is back—and more than a little pissed off—in Wrath of the Goddess, the fifth installment in the Goddess with a Blade series.

You can’t keep a vengeful woman down for long.

Rowan Summerwaite, elite hunter and human vessel to the goddess Brigid, has returned home to Las Vegas—and she’s mad as hell. It seems someone thought they could eliminate Rowan and everyone she holds dear.

That someone was dead wrong.

With tensions between paranormal factions at an all-time high, Rowan and her crew, along with her sexy Vampire Scion husband, Clive Stewart, have their work cut out for them. The Vampire Nation has at least one traitor in their midst, leaving them extremely vulnerable…but if it’s a war they want, Rowan’s prepared to bring the pain like never before.

Rowan knows her duty is to those she’s sworn to protect, but it seems the harder she fights, the more barriers she hits…and the more friends she loses.

With even her closest alliances in question, Rowan will have to accept that sometimes the path toward the greater good means making heartrending sacrifices along the way…

One of my favorite series. So it hurts me to say that this addition was underwhelming and slightly disappointing.

I think the significant time gap between the release of this and the previous novel also added to my lower rating (compared to previous books in this series).

It felt very hasty, put together as quickly as possible just to get something out there. There is still plenty of Rowen's snarky and some very steamy sexy time for her and Clive. But with the build up to this novel and it's premise being all about blood for blood revenge, it had so much promise. It sadly did not live up to expectations or compare to the other previous novels. Lackluster is the word that comes to mind. A word that should never be used to describe anything involving Rowen (the lead character).

I am relieved to learn there is a book six to follow and will be the series finale. I have high hopes it will redeem itself.

Believe me when I say that I absolutely love this series. Or at least I used to. I knew that waiting fours years for a book came with risks, mainly that no matter how much you love the series, an authors writing style can change drastically in that amount of time, and it would only be more apparent due to the fact that she hadn’t released any other books that I read during that time. Also, it’s my personal opinion that if an author is going to half ass a book just to finish a series years later, they shouldn’t bother.

To be honest I don’t know what happened here. I wanted to love this book so bad but for some reason I just really struggled to enjoy it and get involved with the story. If this book was even decent I would’ve welcomed it into my library with open arms, but somehow it just missed the mark for me and no matter how much I loved the previous books, I just can’t ignore that.

Too many mistakes for a trad published book, but unfortunately it wasn't the biggest problem this book had.

It wanted strongly to start with a bang, but it was all over the place. Honestly it was a WTF moment ending with Rowan churlishy kneeing a vamp in the 'nads. I won't tag it as a spoiler as it happens in the first pages, but her posse in the US is killed while she's away. And rather then having a dramatic moment, it's robotic, flat. There is no real bang as there is no real drama. (Or rather the plot tells you that, but the writing does not support it.)

The plot is eerily similar to the previous book, plus some holes. Why trying to hide the disappearing couple for example? Every one but their uncle is betraying them, but they alway survive without ever pulling the plug on the leak...

Overall it seems like an overused plot, rather than one arching over the series. I'm not feeling the love for Rowan who seems cartoonish, and moreover she keeps needing saving. There's a battle in each book which she nearly loses every time. I don't need her fake, but she's a goddess trained by the most powerful Other, and honestly you don't really see it.

The villains keep being also cartoonish, the twirling mustache kind and the side kick are as flat. David is a walking stereotype whose only characteristics is that he blushes a lot. And unfortunately there are no reasons for this (it's not sexual, he has no hangups, he's not in love with her), so it just seems a stupid way to 'characterize' him.

I think this series has come to an end for me. There's not much that I find interesting to read about.

I totally love this series ❤️

How to describe about Rowan, our heroine here? It’s Eve Dallas on steroids!
No, seriously. She is that bonkers! 😂😂

And our 500 years plus hero?
Just like Roarke, have to take the lady as the way she is.
That’s the price you need to pay for loving an Alpha Female, right? 😘

I can’t wait for book #6.

The opening to this one really got to me. I hated that a happy time for Rowan and Clive was ruined and not just a bit, but so very bad. The event spurred Rowan into action, to find the people who would do this. During her investigation she found out that there had to be people close to them betraying them, which seemed to hit her hard, especially as that info was figured out after another hard know. I loved that Clive was right there supporting Rowan, helping and giving her space as needed.

Genevieve was an interesting addition to this book. She came off a bit flighty at first, but by the end of the book you saw she was a badass in her own right, one who could keep up with Rowan. Her love of pancakes made her all the more fun to read about.

After marathoning the entire series before reading this newest release, I’ve noticed that a lot of the plot seems overly similar. I don’t like the feeling I get when I purchase a book only to read the same story with a few changes in cast. Although the h has made significant allies & war has been declared, this book left me feeling like I’ve been running on the treadmill expecting to get to a predetermined spot. That’s to say I don’t feel we’ve made much progress on the overall arc. This was an average book that left me with few feelings towards the story & many feelings towards the author. I’m unsatisfied. Will I continue the series, is at this point undetermined. In reality a lot of it has to do with how long I have to wait for the next installment. I’m not waiting another 3.5 years for book 6.

I was so excited for this book. I've missed this series in the four years since At Blade's Edge came out. I love a kick-ass protagonist, but what I adore even more is if their partner is equally strong. That's why I love the dynamics between Rowan and Clive. They remind me of my favorite romantic couple in Eve and Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb.

Having said that, I'm giving Wrath of the Goddess 3.5 stars. The inciting incident right from the start of the book was shocking and set high expectations for the adventures ahead. However, the resolution left me wanting.

I wanted less of Genevieve. She kind of took over and lessened Rowan and Clive's powers. Rowan's two near-death experiences didn't give me the sense of true danger because Genevieve was there to save her.

I wanted more of Brigid instead. She should be the one saving Rowan. She was the goddess, after all.

I wanted a better villain than Lyr. Enyo was an incredible antagonist. The fact that Enyo created Lyr made him weak in my estimation.

I wanted more of the romance between Clive and Rowan. I like them taking care of each other and sniping and bantering. More of that, please.

Overall, I'm happy to have the series back. Hoping for more Theo in the next book.

I'm happy it seems this storyline has ended, but I'm feeling as if it hasn't. I guess it's because not everything was wrapped in a pretty bow. It's kind of the worst sort of cliffhanger, where is it going from here. I guess the binge continues.

There was something about this installment... not sure what it was...that made this one largely a miss for me. I really love this series and remember reading the first book and being so pleasantly surprised by the main characters and the world. And each installment has been pretty good about maintaining and growing the character development and forward story. But this one just left me feeling largely empty and unsatisfied.

At the end of the previous book, Carey, one of Rowan's employees and close friend was murdered in front of her at a time when she was at her happiest: Celebrating the formalization of her marriage to Clive. It was an act that was supposed to show her vulnerabilities and weaken her in the eyes of the people who relied on her.

This book was supposed to be about her wreaking vengeance on those who did that in such a public and devastating way. I mean, it is called the Wrath of the Goddess. I wanted to feel some wrath happening.

But weirdly it felt like a lot of hurry up and get nowhere. There was a lot of telling but less showing. Some other people close to Rowan are murdered and we are told a that she feels grief but it felt too distant. I wanted some more emotional resonance.

I think other than Clive and Rowan and to a lesser extent, David and Alice, I didn't feel anything for any of the characters. Genevieve, a minor character from the previous books, take a major role in this one. She is Rowan's sidekick in almost every scene. It is revealed she is some super powered witch who can do almost anything. And much of the trouble Rowan finds herself in, Genevieve is conveniently there to do her version of the nose twitch and fix it through magic. In fact this book felt almost like a backdoor pilot into a new series starring Genevieve.

Also the reveal at the end felt really hollow. This person has been trying to hurt Rowan specifically by hurting those closest to her. And yet when we find out who it is all I could do was say "who?" There really is no emotional payoff at all.

*cries* It's almost over! I don't want it to be over! I want ten more years of Rowan and Clive. Summerwaite/Stewart 2020?

Get it together, girl. Okay.

So this ends up being my least favorite of the series, but it's still really good. It just feels like a stepping stone to get to the big finale. It didn't really feel over - I was kinda surprised when I turned the page to find the "coming soon from Lauren Dane" page. It's not really a cliffhanger, but it does end on a "this isn't over" note. So if you don't like those, I suggest waiting until the final book is released and reading them together. Lauren Dane doesn't skip more than a couple weeks in between books, so they'll probably read really well together.

Also, stretching this over the course of a few days was fucking TORTURE. I did not savor it - I obsessed over it. Not doing that again.

* An advanced reading copy was provided by the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. *

I've waited over 2 years for this book. I kinda gave up on the series. But to my surprise and gratitude the author will finish this one.

The vampires in these books may not be something new, but the main character certainly is.
Rowan is the type of heroine that you rarely see. Super confident. Powerful. And opinionated without being arrogant.
I think the thing I like most about her is the fact that she doesn't take shit from anyone. If someone is being an idiot they will hear about it.
Rowan doesn't try to please people or make herself liked by everyone.

I'm so happy to see a main character so unique and coolheaded.

The fifth book picks up right where the last one left off. After one of her friends is murdered Rowan starts hunting the people responsible. With some help from Clive and her family and friends.
The action again takes place in Las Vegas and I think the author tried to show us how much Rowan has changed from the first book. And she did.

The first four books cover 3 whole years, but personally, it didn't feel that way. More like a year, a year and a half?

There were some little things that bothered me throughout the book. It was a little repetitive. The author insisted a lot with how Rowan is her own person and no one will ever tame her; how her relationship with The First is complicated and she both hates and loves him. And how freaking powerful and special magical snowflake Genevieve is.
We get it, she's a big deal, but she doesn't impress or interest me that much. I'm pretty sure the author plans to write a spin-off about her. I don't know anything but that's what it feels like.

Rowan and Clive. *sigh*. I really like how their relationship has evolved. In the first book it was really forced and rushed, but now it's pretty perfect. (And are you absolutely sure they can't have children? Not even a miracle, magical baby? C'mon, Bridgit is also the Goddess of fertility! Can't she do something? Pretty please?)

So, even though we've waited so long for this book 'Wrath of the Goddess' is definitely a must-read if you've enjoyed the previous books.
Happy reading!

I have been eagerly awaiting this book for ages! Recommended my library purchase a copy a few months ago, and wouldn’t you know it, it turned up this morning in my library loans. I devoured this and thankfully there is no need to reread the last book as the final scenes are recapped for your reading convenience.

All my favourites were there, we see the brief return of a not so pleasant character from books past - you’ll have to read the book to find out who it is - and a big plus was Rowan discovering more about her connection to Brigid. There were some big surprises as well that I’m hoping will be resolved in the next, and sadly, final book, and with the potential for betrayal running high, I’m hoping Bridget and Theo both slip their leashes 😉

In all a really fast paced and attention grabbing book. I pre-ordered a paperback copy before I got to chapter 5 I loved it so much.

For some reason unknown to me, I had missed this fifth volume of the series, a series that I then really like. So when I realized this, I immediately ran for cover despite having already read the later ones. In this book there is the meeting between Darius and Genevieve that will then lead to the interesting developments that follow, and for that alone it would be worth it. We also have a lot of interactions between Rowan and Clive, which I kind of miss in the later books, centered as they are on other characters, so as late as I am, I am very glad I went back and read this novel.

fun but repetitive

some gleaming moments in here and it’s certainly a fast read, but it’s hard to connect to a character who says the same thing every book. i can see some areas of character growth, but overall it feels somewhat shallow - a solid 3 star book and series.

Ferocious, Funny and Sweet

I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

Rowan has slowly revealed her tender side over the last few books in this series. She has always had one, but it has been exceptionally well buried except for when she is with the acolytes of her goddess. She also shows it for her ‘family’, the people she has collected over the last decade or so. This book starts with her heart being exposed when someone close to her is killed and she can’t stop it because she is on another continent and watching it over a video call, during her marriage celebrations.

She and her loved ones are being targeted because she has done so much to harm the conspiracy involved in enslaving humans and allowing vampires to rule without constraint.

Rowan and Clive head back to Las Vegas and start investigating and find that this was not the first person to be harmed. Thankfully Rowan and Clive have the invaluable help of Genevieve, an incredibly powerful and ancient witch, with who Rowan is friends and has helped them liaise with the Witches Conclave regarding the magic users who are involved in the conspiracy.

This story is hard on Rowan’s heart but she gets lots of support. Clive in particular is a swoon-worthy hero, who adores his new wife with a passion and understanding that you don’t often read. His character’s understanding of Rowan’s is laid out for the reader so they can see her through his eyes and understand her more. This works in the opposite direction and is actually almost more revealing than when the character’s focus is internal.

There is plenty of mystery-solving and violence, though less than in some of the books. Rowan is having her bloodthirsty tendencies curtailed somewhat by Clive, but we still see Clive cut a bloody swathe through the bad vampires. There are also lots of tender moments between Rowan and Clive. Their relationship is funny, strange and sweet. They seem to enjoy annoying and being annoyed by each other. Snark is their love language.

This is a really good series and I can’t wait to read the next book to see if they actually ever reach the bottom of the conspiracy.

Originally published at Reading Reality

I feel as if I’m in a pre-existing relationship with this book that I need to disclose – even though I only just finished it. I know that sounds a bit (possibly more than a bit) odd.

You see, the first book in this series, Goddess With a Blade, was one of the first books I ever got from NetGalley, eight long years ago. I still remember sitting down at my kitchen table to read it, and finished it in one sitting. (To be fair, it’s only 200 pages, for me that’s not a long book.) Goddess With a Blade was also one of my picks for “Best Ebook Romance” of 2011 in Library Journal.

A couple of years later, after we’d moved to Seattle – and after Blade to the Keep was published – I was riding the bus home from work and saw an ad for Goddess and Keep on the side of a city bus, and as it flashed by I realized that I was being quoted on the side of the bus! It was one of those total “squee” moments.

I mean, I was a fan of the series before – but WOW!

I do love this series. Very Much. And I would even without the side-of-the-bus squeeing.

But it’s been FOUR very long YEARS since the previous book in this series, At Blade’s Edge. A book that left series readers hanging over the edge of a nasty and brutally epic cliffhanger. A cliffy that feels like it has only just begun to be resolved by the end of Wrath of the Goddess.

That Goddess is plenty wrathful – and she has every right to be.

Wrath of the Goddess begins where At Blade’s Edge left us hanging – with Rowan Summerwaite, vessel of the Goddess Brigid, in Europe for her wedding to the Vampire Scion of North America, Clive Stewart. One of her friends back home in Las Vegas is sending her congratulations, live over the Internet, when seriously evil dudes break into her headquarters and kill the man – on camera – then taunt her with the information that they are coming for everyone she loves.

From that gruesome point, the story is off to the races. Rowan, with a little help from her friends and a lot of help from Clive, rushes home to Vegas to investigate the death of one of her family-of-choice – as well as the disappearance of another.

Only to discover that both her own organization, Hunter Corp., and Clive’s, the Vampire Nation, still have traitors at the very top who have betrayed them both to some nefarious someone who is out for his – or her – own evil ends.

It’s up to Rowan – and her Goddess – to stop them. Again. Because the evil that Rowan has battled before is a multi-headed beast and it’s her duty to lop off all the heads. In order to save her friends, her family, and perhaps humanity itself.

Escape Rating A-: I loved this, and found it a great read from beginning to end. But, and at this point it gets to be a bigger “but” all the time, this is no place to start this series. (Also not the end of this series, but I’ll get to that in a minute.)

The world created in this series has become intensely convoluted. There’s Rowan, and her Goddess. There’s the Vampire Nation, to which Rowan has multiple ties, and not just her new husband. Rowan’s foster-father Theo is “The First” of the Vampire Nation, the oldest, the most dangerous, and the most ruthless of them all. And he’s the one in charge.

Rowan works for Hunter Corp., an organization that defends humans without magic or paranormal abilities. That defense is wrapped around a Treaty between the Hunters and the Vampires. Preservation of that treaty is a big part of Rowan’s job. In spite of the number of times that Hunter Corp has misused and betrayed her. Repeatedly and often.

There are also witches – one of whom plays a big part in Wrath of the Goddess, and other paranormal beings. It’s a big world, as big as our own non-magical world, and it has layers within layers – layers that a newbie coming into the series at this point will probably drown in.

If this all sounds fascinating, start back at the beginning with Goddess With a Blade, because this is a series that is building on each book – they don’t stand alone.

If this is your jam, and you get to this point, this particular entry in the series adds more of those layers, both in the form of the witch who joins with Rowan and in the sense of Rowan’s character development.

Readers who are also fans of J.D. Robb’s In Death series will find a lot of similarities between Rowan Summerwaite and Eve Dallas. Both are blunt to the point of rudeness, have little patience with fools or bureaucrats, and hide their soft gooey centers under layers and layers (and layers) of epic snarkitude.

Back to Wrath of the Goddess – before she gets more wrathful. In spite of Rowan’s extreme distaste for bureaucracy, there’s a lot of, not exactly bureaucracy, but certainly a lot of “hurry up and wait” in this one. It makes sense for the story, as a huge piece of it necessarily follows the investigation into the murder that Rowan and Clive witnessed online.

That investigation turns out to be much bigger than merely “whodunnit” as Rowan discovers that someone staked out her headquarters for weeks before the hit, and timed it “just so”, to make it perfectly devastating for Rowan.

So there’s lots of magical forensics in this one, and lots of unraveling layers and unspooling of possibilities of suspects and traitors on all three sides – Hunter Corp, the Vampire Nation and the witches’ Senate, because there are traitors in the (high) ranks of all three.

In the end, there’s plenty of kickass action for everyone – along with the heartbreaking realization that the rot that Rowan thought she weeded out in At Blade’s Edge has already spread farther than she wanted to believe.

Her job is not over, and neither is this series. Book 6, Blood and Blade is scheduled for release in December. I have ALL my fingers crossed that we really won’t have to wait longer than that to see what happens next!

An enjoyable read, but it didn’t wow me, just felt a bit unfulfilled after it. Like you had an ok meal but we’re still hungry. It was entertaining enough it just seemed to lack something I couldn’t put my finger on.

Good but not great.

Despite its flaws I love this series

Rowen Summerwaite is a Hunter who enforces the Treaty protecting humans from vampires and other supernatural creatures. She is also the embodiment of the Goddess Brigid. Rowen’s husband Clive is a vampire, the head honcho of North America. Her step dad is The First, the first vampire to exist, and so old he’s crazy powerful and sometimes just crazy. Evil forces want the treaty to end and supernatural creatures to have unrestricted use of humans for food and power. The 5 books (so far) follow Rowen and Clive as they fall in love and fight against various bad vampires, humans, and sorcerers.

What I love about the books:
Rowen and Clive’s relationship as it progresses from distrust and InstaLust into respect and admiration. They support each other even when they’re not happy with what the other is doing. They encourage each other to grow. Clive loves all of Rowen’s sharp edges and nurtures her soft side. Their professional roles are in opposition to each other, but she respects his position and protects him. They both apologize and try harder to do better for the other.
Evil is truly evil. The stories move quickly as events occur and puzzle pieces are found. Each book ends after a big Boss battle that our team wins, with hints of more to come.
The world building is fascinating. Vampire politics, witchcraft and sorcery, Goddess worship and lore are all on the page. I especially loved the scenes when Rowen goes to Brigid’s temple.
Consent is an important theme. Taking away someone else’s agency is grounds for punishment.

What I don’t love:
Rowen’s crankiness gets on my nerves after a while. She and Clive bicker and while they treat it as foreplay and both enjoy it after 5 books i just started skipping ahead. I also felt like they hooked up so quickly in book 1 it wasn’t believable.
The secondary characters are interesting, but don’t get as much development as I would wish. Rowen’s valet David especially deserves some backstory.
On the same note, I wanted more of the Goddess Brigid. This series led me down a Celtic rabbit hole on Wikipedia. Why was Rowen chosen to be her Vessel? What does she have planned for Rowen? Why doesn’t she take over at the start of the boss battles, rather than later?
Rowen reconciles with Theo more quickly than made sense and I just couldn’t believe that she could feel fondly towards him after all the bad things in their history.

Lauren Dane has been an auto buy for me for years. I love her characters and their stories despite their flaws. I think I read that Rowen and Clive will be back, and I know I’ll preorder that book as soon as it’s available.

A book which concludes the long plot started in the previous books

A book which picks up after the horrible ending of the previous book ... And unfortunately, the losses are not over for Rowan (including two which made me so sad ...)

We finally have a certain number of answers at the end of this book which concludes the intrigue of the famous conspiracy against the established order and I loved seeing Genevieve but also the Devil Dust a little more in detail (I really like them and loved seeing them have their own book !)

However, a few downsides in this book : I had the impression that the book was a little repetitive (I had the impression that it was the same story as in the other books but also the chapters seemed repetitive ...), I'm less attached to the Rowan / Clive relationship (they're cute but I have the impression that it's always Clive who has to compromise but never Rowan and she overreacts a little too much whereas Clive never questions her authority !) and I was a little disappointed with the identity of the villain who was almost banal in the end ><

In short, a nice book to read but I liked it less than the previous ones ... I might read the rest later !

I love this series, and Wrath of the Goddess was an excellent addition to it. But it wasn’t without it’s problems. The most significant being that it was years since the last installment. When I started the book I remembered the general characters, but that was it. I remembered absolutely nothing from the previous book, and while yes the beginning briefly goes over the ending of the last book, it wasn’t enough. I didn’t remember The who, what, when, where, and why. I kept hoping that I would get even a 2 sentence paragraph as a reminder of what had happened previously, or even about the general world, but almost every single time it didn’t happen. So I spent a good portion of the story feeling a little bit lost.

Other than that, the story was amazing. I love Rowan and Clive. They are one of my favorite couples, and this book reminded me of that. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

It was wonderful to get back to these characters after so long. The storyline was exciting, dramatic and rich with emotion. Rowan is as always, large, incharge and acerbic. Clive is still dark, deadly and impossibly swoon worthy. Together, they are a great couple that is easy to root for and feel a strong connection to. I highly recommend starting this series from book one. Otherwise, I think you will feel lost. I would also advise the same for readers that have read this series before. It has been quite awhile since the last book. So a refresher will increase your enjoyment. This is my truthful, voluntary review.
