* This is a myth-busting book that will appeal to anyone who is tired of weight loss lies and looking for lasting change. * Based on 20 years' worth of Zoe Harcombe's research into diets, diet advice, obesity, eating disorders, food cravings and what causes them. * Answering the `why?' questions of weight loss and gain in an accessible, engaging and ground-breaking way. * A step-by-step plan for how to reframe our relationship with food and change it for good.
Quite a short book. It's basicallly a precis of the new nutrition thinking of Fung, Taubes, Teicholz, and Lustig pointing to the dangers of sugar, refined and junk foods, and how they compromise our hormonal balance that leads to obesity. She attacks the now absurd realiance on calorie counting (which we all know fails in the end). She places the focus on Glucagon, which is an insulin antagonist. And it is the encouragement of this, the fat burning hormone, and how to keep it going, upon which the recipes are designed. This part of the book is rather too brief for my liking, but would suit many people whose mind boggles at the detail that Taubes, Fung and Lustig go into when it comes to the nitty gritty of metabolic issues. What she presents, where others do not is a diet plan, with recipes and ways to think about boosting your mental approach. She delves into so of the psychology of eating and suggests ways to bolster your resolve to help you on a weight loss journey. I think many will find this a useful book. But not for me. I prefer to know the details and design my life around knowlege, rather than trust to the regime desined by another.
Some chapters are excellent, particularly the early evidence from studies which show that eating less doesn't lead to permanent weight loss. But it's downhill from there. As soon as I'm directed to get out a notebook and pencil, I know what sort of book it's become! So many of us will be very familiar with SMART targets, levels of competence and the other training techniques she works through. If you've sat through/delivered training in the workplace, this book is a big turnoff. The science and the way of eating are to be recommended, but the method is better in the 3 step plan book.
Good read for those of us who are tired of trying to find the "right" diet! Our scientific/nutritional community has led us astray for far too long!!!!
A really good insight into the science behind what our bodies do with the food we consume. Not all calories are equal and this tells us how to get the best out of what we put in our mouths.
Great book for covering food and mental issues around it. Otherwise, it's not a "healthy living" book and doesn't cover exercise beyond the bare minimum.
