Venom. An alien symbiote that grants its host incredible spider-like powers and more... but at a terrible cost] Since his first full appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #300, Venom has not only become one of the deadliest foes of the wall-crawler, but also one of the most popular. Now, Marvel The Definitive Venom brings together the very best tales from the Lethal Protector's 30-plus year history, including covering some of their greatest and most pivotal battles]
The comics vary wildly in quality, but it’s quite impressive as a snapshot of one of the big publishers across three or four decades. Secret Wars is pretty innocent, however cynical it was in creation, as are the first few symbiote issues… but by the time Venom shows up (with some atrocious Todd MacFarlane art that I will confess even convinced me as a teenager), they’re becoming darker and more cynical. And by the time Carnage pops up we’re getting random deaths with no real sense of them meaning anything. The last few modern issues are… not a strong case for anybody involved, incredibly hard to read and strikingly ugly in artistic terms. It’s far from convinced me about Venom as a character, but it’s a fascinating case study in how Marvel changed with the times
A good introduction to Venom in the comics, which I much prefer to the films. It does include a fair amount of runs, although not every single one, meaning that (while big) it doesn’t take forever to read through, and you can skim to your favourite storyline with no problem. A good enough read, if you can ignore the supreme cheesiness of the 80s runs.
DNF. The storylines are really good and classic, but it's so hard to read old comics where women, Mary Jane in particular, are just sexy ornaments to their superhero partners it's so old and I'm so tired
This collection had a great mix of both new and old comics. While some of the older ones didn't hit the same as the newer additions, I appreciate how the art style has evolved over time. 🎨
