The Shattered Soul #3

The Fragment of Light

Rate this book
One Shattered Soul. Five Fragments of Power.

The tide of war continues to rise, and the fragments of Draeken have parted to fight the expanding threats. While the other fragments hunt the remaining outlanders, Light dons the persona of Serak, head of the Order of Ancients, and infiltrates their ranks to find the missing dark elf queen. But wearing Serak’s face will not hide Light’s nature, and his innocence could very well be their undoing.
Highly impulsive and easily distracted, Light must rely on Willow to keep him in check. The dark elf soldier is cunning and focused, yet it is her tattoos that bring her renown. They are tools and weapons inscribed on her flesh, ink to be wielded. The trail for the queen will take them from underground cities to snowy peaks, and by the time the dust settles, there will be a trail of chaos through the Order.
The fragment of Light has been unleashed.

Straightforward, but for good reason

Another good installment in this series. This time the book seemed more flamboyant, with less surprises, but that makes a lot of sense when you remember Light's personality. He's the childish and fun Fragment, so the different writing would make a lot of sense, even if it is not always the preferable route.

I find two things particularly impressive about this new series of books by Ben: one, that he has to write 5 different protagonists, each with their own personalities and traits, but still connected as being part of Draeken and two, that he's able to inject drama, mystery, and suspense into a story that, the broad strokes of which, any longtime reader of the Lumeneia books already knows. Ben has done a really good job at this; switching between the "good" or "redeeming" aspects with the "troublesome" aspects with ease.

While one may be worried that these books would get old due to rehashing the same plot points over and over (just from different POVs), never fear. Each book has been sufficiently different as the fragments have gone on their own individual quests that when they do meet up as different plot loci, it is more like a reunion with good friends to see the scene from different eyes. Also, each book pushes the plot further along temporally, such that each book has overlapped, but then has progressed further.

These books are great, which is to be expected from Ben, and are being released in a very timely manner. I look forward to seeing how Ben resolves the remaining mysteries and arrives at the narrative place that we all expect it to.

A great continuations to the shattered soul series

Light was fun to read about the light childish life his try’s to live, along with the mic of straight rage like a child can have, the relationship with willow and his brothers makes the journey entertaining. Read for fire and mind and to see how this journey of draken ends.
