Kiyohiko Azuma (東清彦 or あずまきよひこ Azuma Kiyohiko) is a Japanese manga author and artist. His most well-known work is Azumanga Daioh. His current series is Yotsuba&!, which is serialized monthly in Dengeki Daioh magazine.
I've been reading this out loud to my daughter for years, even this week when she was home for her first break from her first year of college. We burst out laughing together repeatedly at the cuteness of Yotsuba's amazing perspective on the world. Sure, this is pretty gentle humor, with the big adventure of this volume being an outing to Tokyo, but I'd be hard pressed to think of a series that has consistently given me as much joy as this one.
The first new volume of Yotsuba in 3 years is a cause for celebration. Needless to say, I was very happy when this volume was released and was saving it for a special occasion. To me, Yotsuba is just one of the best, most precious things in the world, and I was so glad to be able to hang out with these characters once again. Yotsuba is still the cutest little thing, her dad is wonderful, her neighbours and friends are adorable and their collective adventures are as fun, funny and relatable as always.
My personal favourite chapter was about Yotsuba, Fuuka and Hiwatari (better known as Miss Stake) going to a free yoga class. I adored how Yotsuba got everything right from the very first try but her friends struggled with every pose — my personal experience with yoga, which I've been practicing for a full year now (with mixed results), has definitely been closer to Yotsuba's older friends!
The main adventure of the book though was Yotsuba and her dad taking a trip to Tokyo to pick up their new car and hang out with Yotsuba's aunt Koharuko. I just got back from my first ever trip to Japan (which was absolutely amazing) and am longing to go back there again, so thanks to Kiyohiko Azuma's authentic depiction of Japan and Tokyo in particular he managed to transport me back there, in a way.
And that's what Yotsuba&! as a series has always been about for me — the feeling of spending your time with the nicest people in one of the most amazing countries on Earth. That's a great feeling, and not an easy one to capture. Hats off to Mr. Azuma for pulling that off, I could not be more thankful to him for the existence of this wonderful series (and Azumanga Daioh, for that matter). I hope that volume 15 won't take as long to release, but if that's what it takes to create such a beautiful and lovely manga, I am ready to wait.
Yotsuba continues to expand her world's view. This little girl is just adorable! In this volume Yotsuba travels with her father to Tokyo where he will buy a car. Yotsuba gets to know for the first time the Tokyo trains. Also she visit the parks and see various dog breeds she didn't know. Her aunt also makes an appearance and they will have lunch on a rodizio. I don't get tired of reading this manga, I hope to read much more of this little girl.
I didn’t realize how much I missed this series till I read this latest volume. I really needed this story in my life again! Don’t know how long we will have to wait for the next one but I already miss it.
After a long wait, we got another volume! This was so much fun, Yotsuba is a hilarious character and can dead pan with the best of them. I am still obsessed!
Yotsuba ke Tokyo! Apa saja yg trendy d Tokyo ya? Hmm..
Pengalaman Yotsuba makan dengan sistem "all you can eat".
Another good volume with cute moments and Yotsuba learning new things. We meet another family member as well, Koiwai- San's sister, and get to see Yotsuba go to a buffet.
The ending reminds me of when I was little because my family would stay at the amazing casino buffet while my great grandma was gambling away our inheritance
Cute, amusing, and fun as always! Going into this, I was most excited for the yoga chapter but that had some icky body shaming so it wasn't my favorite. The trip to Tokyo was super relatable though! Yotsuba yelling at the crush of people "Did they learn how to use the train wrong?!" was 100% me on BART whenever people jostled me or got a door stuck by forcing themself through it.
Also solved one of the great mysteries of my life - the ice cream cone shaped items that the Sailor Scouts always ate are, in fact, rolled up crepes.
Just as funny and adorable as always!!! I just wish it didn't take so long to translate these by the publishers... Two years was a long time to wait for this!!
I'm so glad Yotsuba is back! Not sure if this is a one-time-thing, or if there will be more books in the future, but I'm really happy to have had another set of Yotsuba adventures, especially after a five-year hiatus.
Is it possible that she got cuter since I last read her adventures? I just can't get enough of this little dumpling!
A great collection, great stories, and really funny! I laughed out loud several times during my reading, which doesn't happen very often!
The wonder of trash bag princess dresses, beading, bad friends, buffet lunches, and yoga (which Yotsuba is unaccountably fantastic at). There's a trip to Toyko where we meet Yotsuba's aunt (and Yotsuba handles subway turnstiles), but other than that, it's pretty plot free. A good dose of the usual funny splendor.
This was a cute installment of Yotusuba. She’s up to her usual shenanigans and it delights me a lot. I really love this series because of how cute and simple it is.
Heartwarming as always. This one reminded me just how much I like Yotsuba's father and his family. They fully except Yotsuba as a family member and it makes me all mushy inside.
The one where Yotsuba shows off her exemplary yoga skills, crafts bead necklaces, visits Tokyo for the first time and meets up with her aunt to pick up the family's new car.
