Abel and Fox learn that there may be someone who can help the boy's worsening condition. But the road to reach her is long and unpredictable -- and not everyone they run into along the way is anxious to let them pass.

I read a lot of comics, but there are only so many I look forward to. This is one of them.
This time out we continue to epically quest, we have a confrontation out of the fairytale side of the ledger, we get Dad back involved, and we end up with a surprise. And other stuff as well. And metaphorical hints. And snappy fox patter. And a final panel that promises even better stuff to come. It's all good.
The artwork continues to amaze. From the overall mood or feel of the Middlewest to the detailed look of each scene in each panel to the dynamic and expressive characters the drawing, inking and coloring here is inspired, and totally supports and sells the story.
So, I'm officially a fan and I guess my opinion can no longer really be trusted. This is a wonderful and rewarding, (and unique in look and storytelling), series. A nice find.
(Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Middlewest continues Abel’s epic quest for answers, but once again I find myself surprised by one turn of events or another in this series. I love how unpredictable the series is. You’d think that it might set me on edge or make me anxious to read it, but it really doesn’t. Instead, I’m already finding myself looking forward to it each month. The characters are really starting to grow on me. I liked Abel from the start, but it’s still been good to get a chance to know him better. And obviously to learn along with him about just what exactly is happening to him. I wanted to like Fox right from the start, but that felt too easy, too safe. The more I see Fox though, the more I can see how he’s a clever writing tool. Fox’s inclusion allows Abel to talk out loud, without having to add in an excuse for another person to be following him around. For all we know Fox can’t actually speak, and Abel just thinks he can. Or perhaps Fox isn’t there at all, but merely all part of Abel’s imagination. I personally hope neither of those theories ends up being accurate, but you never know. And obviously, I’m still absolutely in love with the artwork for this series. It’s just so gorgeous. I can’t get over the linework or the coloring.
The issue confronts complex relationships, particularly Abel's fraught interactions with his father. It challenges readers' perceptions by depicting a father figure who has shown little empathy yet receives unexpected empathy in return from the townsfolk. It leaves a lasting impact, prompting readers to ponder the complexities of empathy and resilience in the face of adversity.

Actual rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 - Bit of a letdown compared to the first two issues. Art is still tops, story lulls a bit... maybe things will pick up again next month....
