With more than 23 million books sold, the My Weird School series really gets kids reading!
The ability to read critically is an essential skill vital to success in school. For example, do you know what point of view means? Or how to “read” a picture? Can you tell fact from opinion?
Well, whether you’re a kid who's just starting to read by yourself or a future librarian—or both!—this book of tips and activities to improve your reading comprehension skills is so much fun you’ll forget you’re learning!
Filled with exercises to help young readers practice skills like identifying context clues and a story’s main idea, plus practical tips and tricks from bestselling author Dan Gutman, this book will help you become the best reader in the history of the world!
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
Its a great book with advice on how to be a better reader and extract more from the reading.
The information is presented in a fun and entertaining way that flows from beginning to end.
"I discovered that reading was fun when I was reading about something that interested me. To This day, I find it hard to read things that don't interest me. It's hard to concentrate.
"Usually there's a good reason for anything that happens in the story. It moves a story forward. IT explains something you need to know. IT sets up something that's going to happen later.
I enjoyed reading the My Weird School books when I was in elementary school (which was 10 years ago at this point). Reading this was fun and took me back to that time, especially with the many excerpts from My Weird School, and I can see why I liked them! This author has a fun, humorous, fast-paced, clever, and creative writing style. He approaches this topic in a validating, relatable, approachable way, rather than just telling kids that they should read. The activities and exercises add a fun, interactive component. I think this has some useful advice for writers, too.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and I would certainly use it with my upper elementary and 6th grade students. You can use parts of the book or the whole thing to help teach reading skills to your students. Excellent, engaging resource!
I thought this was a wonderful book to encourage reluctant readers. Along with providing lots of helpful reading tips, Gutman candidly and humorously addresses many of the common gripes that kids have about reading. I can’t wait to recommend this one to all the kids who think they don’t like to read!
