Growing up in fear of their cruel, drunken father, Olivia Bone and her siblings haven't had an easy start in life.

But when Livvie's fiancé Joe is killed at Ypres and he bequeaths her his house in Islington, it seems like the Bone family might finally escape the worst street in north London.

Though their new life is anything but settled, at least Livvie has good friends, and perhaps more than a friend in Lieutenant Lucas Black, her old boss at the Barratt's Sweet Factory. Although they come from very different worlds, he never treats her as anything less than a lady. As they grow closer, she decides to enlist as a war nurse, hoping to help brave men like him in fighting for their country.

Livvie soon realises that her days as a factory girl were nothing compared to the violent bloodshed of the front line. But she is determined to pull through, and soon finds that amongst the rubble and toil of war, unexpected friendships and new purpose have a way of blossoming. When Lucas reappears, Livvie finds herself falling for him more and more deeply. Yet she knows he has secrets that he's still unwilling to share.

With the world at war, should Livvie follow her heart, or her head - before it is too late?

Having waited to read this book i can say it was well worth the wait,Olivia,Maggie,Nancy and Alfie are living together in the house that Joe left livvie after his death at Ypres. The siblings had a hard life but now they are happy together.Their father Tommy keeps a watchful eye on the house to make sure his children are safe. When a strange man is seen talking to livvie outside her home Tommy follows him to warn him off.Lucas is still carrying a candle for Livvie but knows her heart still belongs to Joe so he is happy to wait.Livvie decides to join the VADS to help the soldiers at the front and after a tricky crossing she is glad that she came and is determined to learn to become a proper nurse.I can highly recommend any of Kay Brellends books as she writes a beautiful story, and now to wait for her next book.worthy of the 5*.

This book is the second in this series and all the familiar characters that
we all loved in the first book are back again. Livvie is missing her fiance, who was killed on the frontline during WW1, her father Tommy Bone is due to marry her aunt Sybil, Tommy is the father of Sybils son, who is the same age as Livvie's brother Alfie. Her sisters Maggie and Nancy and the Keivers, a family who are living in a slum tenament with five people sharing two first floor rooms are also back in this book.
After an awful crime is committed Livvie is left being a mother and a sister to her siblings but things don't always have happy endings. A man is determined to try to take Livvie's house from her and he will stop at nothing to achieve this. Her old boss Lucas Black is back from the front and tries his best to make things right for the family, will he be able to do what is right by everybody or will his own life be in danger? As Livvie feels it is her duty to do something to help the war effort, she joins a group of young women serving on the front line nursing the injured. The nursing work is hard and grueling but Livvie feels she is doing her bit, but will it be enough. Will Lucas meet up with her in France and will they be friends or more?
This is such a great book, I didn't want it to end and I was so pleased to see that there is to be a third installment of this story, I can't wait to read this and find and what happens next to everyone. This is well worthy of 5 stars and would have given it more if I could.

The second book in the bittersweet legacy series, Livvies story continues, starting in May 1915.Olivia Bone living with brother Alfie and sister's Maggie and Nancy, working in Barretts sweet factory. Still missing Joe Hunter who's been killed in action, Olivia dreams of becoming a nurse and enlist with the VAD and is shipped over to France. Lucas Black her old boss still holds a candle for her affection. Tommy her father is still living with her Aunt Sybil an affair that has been going year's. The book is full of ups and downs for the characters, that I always enjoy, the author brings them all into our hearts as you read. I loved it.

War years.

Beautiful story of love, hate, and physical&emotional abuse that nearly destroyed a family. A lovely heartwrenching ending as it knew no boundaries.

I enjoyed this book but it took me a while to get into it. It helped me a lot to have read the first one as it told me something of the history of some of the main characters.

A good book with a strong female character. I look forward to reading the next one
