The Heretic Doms Club #1

Un uomo da buttare

Rate this book

Some parts of this book were slow and some highly emotional. The emotional outweighed the slow and left me feeling exhausted. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it.

Warren is a 38 year old war veteran who works mostly as a body guard for prostitutes. He has this driving need to provide protection. That need is tied into his past of having a mother who was abused by his father.

Taylor is in his early 20’s and a prostitute. He trades sex for a place to stay and food to eat. He doesn’t have to live like that way, but it’s his way of dealing with something that happened to him while he was at home.

To say that Taylor is high maintenance is putting it mildly.

Between Warren’s need to protect and Taylor in need of protection from himself, it was an emotional rollercoaster of a ride. One of the methods used to “help” Taylor just broke my heart. Maybe I’m just a wuss.

I don’t like to leave spoilers in my reviews. All I can say is that this was a tough read for me, and even with the HEA, I’m still left feeling sad. I’m really hoping that book 2 includes more of Warren and Taylor. I need to know that these guys are making head way to bright future.

4.35 Train wreck,😮 Disaster stars and because i still can't get this book out of my head. 😭

One Man’s Trash is another Man’s Roses.

May contain spoilers

“Or hit me!” He shoved Warren again. And again. And again, screaming, “Hit me! Just hit me! That’s all I need. If you won’t fuck me, at least hit me!”

description

Well this book was one crazy, cuckoo ride of dysfunctional relationship that for some weird reasons worked.

I don’t even know how to write a review for this perfect disaster . All I know is this is not your typical romance novel. The writing was flawless and the characters thoroughly flawed.

It was so exhausting to read. The Mc’s were so self destructive to a point I wanted to whoop their asses and drag them to therapy

Warren! Is a Saint and deserves a gold medal for his patience and for loving Taylor, because Taylor! TAYLOR! Was one difficult guy to love.

“You cherish me. I’m broken and flawed and messed up, but you still value me enough to make me yours. You love me just enough to give me part of you to hold. And I will. I’ll make it part of me. I won’t let you down.”
Warren’s cheeks were damp, and his breath hitched in his chest, but he kissed Taylor’s forehead. “Good. Good boy.”

Warren and Taylor fit perfectly together, even with their unusual kinks.

I am just going to list all the things that make this book a F*cking train wreck, but for some reasons I really couldn’t stop, I kept reading, i can't explain that kind of rush.

We have:

Taylor!

re-read March 2024

Took this 2023’s favorite on a re-read and loved it just as much. Warren & Taylor have my heart. ♡

4.5***** stars

Shit. This book was a hard read but also hit all my buttons in its ugliness and beauty. And I loved it. So so much!!

I’m still a bit speechless so I’m going with only a few quotes:

Just as long as Warren hurt him. Just as long as Warren did what needed to be done.

He was coming apart from the inside, the black rage turning the world upside down, […]

“Because once you know, you won’t want me anymore. All you’ll ever see is somebody who’s broken. You’ll never see me the way you do now.”

“[…] You value him, and that’s the opposite of what he’s looking for. You see buried treasure when what he wants right now is to be somebody’s trash.”

If you like it dark, angsty and a little taboo with a strong and intense love story, I think you might like it. But please check TWs.

Fans of dark erotica, rejoice! Marie Sexton has completely outdone herself with One Man’s Trash, the first installment in her The Heretic Doms Club series. Angsty and gritty (with just about every trigger warning I can think of) this is a powerful and heart-rending tale. This story affected me so deeply, just thinking of everything that happened, makes me want to scroll back and experience it all over again.

It is wonderful watching this drama unfold. Marie Sexton made me so happy with the variety of taboo subjects she explores in One Man’s Trash. The characters are complex and interesting, and seeing them grow and change together throughout the story is incredibly moving. As the tension builds, Sexton continues to layer on the drama. This book is dark and erotic and absolute perfection.

I’m completely blown away by the depth of emotion John Solo brings to these characters. Taylor’s anguish, when he breaks down, is absolutely palpable. And Warren’s evolution as the story progresses, as he sheds his bitterness and anger and opens his heart, well I could actually feel it happening. John Solo delivers an incredible performance. This is the best I’ve ever heard him, and considering what a huge fan I am, that’s really saying something!

While the details of Taylor and Warren’s pasts are horrible to learn about (and one of the reasons I’m not saying too much about the story), there are some intensely beautiful moments in One Man’s Trash. I was so moved by the analogy of the mended vase. Warren’s friend Charlie tells Taylor, “‘It’s a Japanese thing. They think when an item’s broken, it doesn’t make it useless. It just adds interest. Becomes part of the item’s history. And the history is what makes it beautiful.’” Though it is broken it still has value, Warren cherishes that vase. One man’s trash, and all that.

Three more books are planned for this series, one for each of the three remaining members of The Heretic Dom’s Club. I can’t wait to get to know each of these men better and find out how they complete their stories. The only thing I’m looking forward to more is hearing John Solo read them to me.

I've stewed on this one for the last 3-4 days and I really don't know how to rate it. I think my problem comes down to Taylor's tenuous grip on his mental health and that skirted a little too close to my day job. But that's not to say that there was nothing redeeming about this story.

I liked the age and size difference between Taylor and Warren and the play on them both being sort of misfits. Warren's seemingly gruff and unapproachable when in fact he's more of a gentle misunderstood giant that's maybe a bit cynical after being knocked around in life. Taylor has a lot of baggage and that baggage has proven to be too big of burden/hassle for many men causing them to discard him. But not Warren and I liked that they value each other and see beauty in the other whereas others have disregarded them as broken or scarred beyond repair.

The analogy with kintsugi I thought a poignant one, regardless of whether their scars are visible to the naked eye or not they have shaped these men. Those scars have value if to no one else than each other, but value nonetheless. However, the sheer scope and magnitude of Taylor's issues coupled with his coping mechanisms after he and Warren have forged a tentative alliance bothered me. Trying to heal mental health issues through kink has never been a trope that's appealed to me however this plot line did resolve in a way that I appreciated and parts I even found clever. I also realize that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink which muddies the rating waters further.

I was surprised that it wasn't nearly as dark or kinky as previous reviews had led me to believe. There is one impact play scene, a gang bang, some humiliation, watersports, orgasm denial but mostly it's bondage and D/s. With loads of begging. I'm a fan of begging so I was happy with that but I was hoping for more pain. #TeamPain4evs

The darkness, I guess, lies in Taylor's backstory which ain't pretty. Trigger for mentions of incest, suicide, child neglect and rape. Taylor's heroin addicted friend Riley was another sad narrative on yet another issue that is a societal plague. I appreciate that these stories are being told and a light is being cast on those shadowy corners that need and deserve to be exposed. But that doesn't make them easy to read about, though I do think a good balance was struck by Sexton between the dark and the light, or maybe the dark and the sex is more apropos.

If there is one shortcoming it was Taylor and Warren's connection to each other. I do believe they need each other but I couldn't say whether that need was based in dependency or love. Regardless, if you're someone who enjoys hurt/comfort stories with some grit One Man's Trash should appeal to you.

As far as the narration goes I thought Solo did a good job of differentiating the voices of all the characters. He maybe went a little overboard in the acting department with a few of Taylor's lines but nothing too egregious.

Overall a nice introduction to a series. I'd be interested in some of the other heretics' stories so I guess I'll go with 3.5 stars.

3.5 Stars!

This was one of the most emotionally exhausting reads I have read in a while. I had to sit it aside a couple times to just take a break from it. Going into the story I was pretty clueless how dark and disturbing this one was going get. I guess I should have paid closer attention to the blurb. The things that took place weren't shocking nor did they bother me. I just didn't pay the necessary attention I should have to what the book was about. Am I the only one who didn't see any trigger warnings in the blurb? It needs to have trigger warnings for those who are triggered by physical or sexual abuse. By drug abuse. I'm sure their might be others but I can't think of them.
Warren has his demon's but they are not nearly as dark as Taylor's. Taylor could go from sweet to volatile pretty damn quickly when something triggers him. He screams, hits, says awful things, then begs and cries to be hurt. It's horrific to read and I didn't exactly like some of the ways Taylor was dealt with. I feel saying much more would give a lot away to this story. So I will just say that it was an emotional, heartbreaking, and sometimes, hard to read book. I liked Warren and had trouble liking Taylor. I felt for them both and liked them together. I especially liked their ending. But some of the book fell flat and dragged a bit. I still am looking forward to the stories I am sure will be coming involving Warren's 3 best friends.

Happy reading dolls! xx

4.25 stars. I’m just going to start with the understatement of the freaking millennium: fighting one’s demons is not pretty. Only dare to wade into this one if you like dark with a side of romance... not the other way around... and bring a flashlight.

Props to the author for not shying away from some seriously uncomfortable content and psychological battles. It wasn’t perfect — and this is going to sound unthinkable in light of what IS written into the story, but there were times that I felt the trauma and healing were slightly gentrified, especially on Warren's part. He and Taylor stopped short of doing actual, serious damage to each other and I found that slightly unrealistic, but tbh I’m not sure how much deeper the author could have gone with all of that and kept this book in genre.

I think it’s important to understand that many people will not consider this kink erotica. There are elements that might look similar to that, but they have very little to do with sexuality and more to do with the consequences of trauma. I realize that those two things are sometimes inextricable, but just know going in that this reads more like the latter than the former.

For me personally, I often find the romance genre somewhat limiting, as much as I adore it. I often WANT more of this deep psychological dive, even when a story is not about such dark pasts. So this one ticked a lot of boxes for me. Really solid, and this won’t be my last read from this author.

Oh, and I'm not going to reiterate trigger warnings here because they're well covered in other reviews, but... if you have any triggers at all, just give this one a wide berth.

I am a sobbing mess.
I see why this book is not loved by everyone or not finished. My goodness, this was exhausting. But it was so worth it.
There are so many things to find fault with. But at the same time, they are also an important part of the story, like this one:

What was a little unprotected sex when he’d already lived more than a decade too long?

They’d both chosen to gamble with their lives.
😢😢😢

I can really understand the reasoning on this even though it's an absolute hard limit.
This is not a romantic love story. Yes Taylor and Warren find something like love for each other, but the path is not romantic in any way. This is primarily about need, deep and inevitable.

Taylor grinned at him, letting the blanket fall aside. He was completely bare underneath the fur, and utterly irresistible. He was like some kind of mythological being—a male seductress with supernatural powers—and Warren was powerless against him. Magical enchantment seemed like the only explanation for what Taylor had done to him. He’d become insatiable. 😳😳😳

I would even go so far as to say that the sex scenes are not even erotic. They pack a punch and have insane impact, but the whole time something is off altogether.
Taylor and Warren are both broken, only Warren has had time to deal with his demons while Taylor's are wreaking havoc. It's really intense, there's a giant rock weighing me down. Even the declarations of love are not freeing, but bring additional weight.

“How could you want me, Warren? Why would you ever want to tie yourself to somebody as messed up as me?”
The answer to that question was easy. “Because you make me happy. Because those moments when I peek into your room and realize you’re still here, or when I come home and find you waiting on the couch—those are the brightest moments of my day. The brightest moments I’ve had in years, really.”
😭😭😭

Warren was the sun, and Taylor was one of the little flowers in the garden that only opened when it felt the warm rays. 🌸🌸🌸

This book is exceptional and you have to dig deep to have the patience to get to the end and not break before then.

“Never let the sadness of your past or your fear of the future distract you from the joy of the present.”

It's tough watching someone you care about (a parent, a friend) stay with an abusive partner because of fear or some twisted belief that they love the abuser or that the abuser loves them. But what about when your partner will do absolutely anything to get you to abuse them because they think it's what they deserve? One Man's Trash is, undoubtedly one of the most fucked up books I've ever read. Did I like it? Sort of. It's complicated.

There was so much in One Man's Trash that pushed right on past my boundaries and went into previously uncharted territories (for me). I cringed and practically read through my fingers during parts of the book because I didn't want to miss part of what made the story so intense, but I can't say I enjoyed those parts, either. At all. Taylor had no self-worth. None. And I could not help but feel pity. And Warren, being who he is, only wanted for Taylor to see himself like Warren saw him.

“It’s a Japanese thing. They think when an item’s broken, it doesn’t make it useless. It just adds interest. Becomes part of the item’s history. And its history is what makes it beautiful.”

Taylor is one of the most messed up characters I've encountered in a book - and that says more than you might think. Of any MC I can recall, Taylor needs far more therapy than most of them. But just like anything, it's something he has to want.

And Warren, well, he's pretty messed up, too, but in very different ways. Between growing up in a house where his mother stayed with his abusive father and the few tours in Afghanistan when he was in the military, where he was lucky to come back alive, Warren does the best he can to get through his days. He's a bit of a white knight, too. He might skirt what legal, a bit too closely, when it comes to how he makes a living, but he's a protector and he has integrity.

Warren and Taylor are quite the broken pair. Oddly, though, I do think they were good for each other in many ways. Taylor has Warren to make sure he doesn't go too far off the rails and Warren needs to be needed, so while it's an odd sort of relationship, it does seem to work for them.

"Somebody once told me it isn’t enough to slay your demons. You gotta dissect those bastards. Cut open their bellies and see what they’ve been feeding on. Then you’ll know the real problem.”

There's a fuck ton of angst in this book, right up until the end and the HEA is well fought. I'm still trying to figure out if I liked the story, though. I mean...yeah, it's complicated. One thing I can say for sure is that I love Marie Sexton's writing. It's always compelling and I've yet to find myself unable to get lost in one of her stories. That was certainly true, here, so I'm calling it a win.

This is a train wreck. I couldn't look away. I was this close to DNFing at least 5 times. But I still couldn't look away. So, 3 stars I guess. Maybe 2.75?

Abuse, self harm, rape, addiction, death, gang bangs, violence, DEATH, beatings, suicide...it's ALL here.

If Taylor still denied therapy after all this, I would have lost my shit.

But there was one thing that I liked and that I think makes this book different than other BDSM stories. Most times the authors focus on the sub's tastes. Here, it was more about what makes the doms comfortable.

Will I read the next book? Probably.

Once again, I picked up a book that I'd usually never give a second glance. After a friend reassured me it was not D/s, I thought I'd give this kinkfest a try.

What I read -- I made to 25% -- was well-written, and I have no gripes about it. I simply ran into a wall with OPK.

Other People's Kink is stuff I simply can't resonate with, no matter how skilled the writing. I'm guessing we've all encountered OPK -- regardless of how fervently we support the concept of consenting adults doing as they damn well please, sometimes the allure of the things that please other people remains forever mysterious to us.

For me, OPK comes in two main flavors:

Boring

and

Nope nope nope nope nope nope

The former isn't a big deal; basically I expect when I read something kinky that it won't resonate for me. But at 25% into this story, something was introduced that fell into the latter category, so I bailed out.

Don't take this as a criticism of the book; if the blurb sounds appealing I encourage you to give it a chance.

This is one of the best psychological stories I've read in the M/M genre and it's making me consider reducing some of the high ratings I granted to other books.
I'm going to write a review on the triggers later on, but I still have to wrap my mind around the story to write a comprehensive review.
But what I want to say is that I loved it :)

This book was good but it deal with some sensitive subjects. Warren and Taylor are both scared but in different ways. Taylor lands in Warrens lap and what he thought would be a one off turned into so much more. These guys were great together, so hot at times. What I enjoyed about both of them was how they seemed to know what each needed even when the other didn't or didn't want it. Warren went above and beyond when Taylor had one of his bad days...an 11 on a scale from 1 to 10. I will have to say I shed a tear or two while reading this because I could so see this story happening in real life. I can't wait to read the next book and I hope Warren and Taylor make an appearance in it.

Although this book is mainly D/s with a strong Dom and a needy, traumatized sub, there are a lot of rough things in flashbacks and occasionally on page so it warrants many trigger warnings. Both men make a real journey here. Warren from being bitter and angry and closed down to taking someone into his heart, and then knowing the pain of not being able to make everything better for them, the way he wants to. Taylor from a past of many blows, and a present of survival, to trusting someone else and the possibility of a future. Both men have guilt they need to shed, and secrets they are keeping.

The other Doms shown briefly here were interesting enough for me to want to read their stories going forward. This book also made me believe in the value for these men of a sex kink that doesn't appeal to me - I always appreciate when an author can do that, put me in other POVs and make me feel why something works for them. The ending is hopeful, as these guys find their own, uneven but functional, balance in a loving relationship.

Let me set the stage for this well written tale of dark lives.
Warren, 38, tall, built, ex-military, with PTSD and loneliness is working security for the seedier side of life.

Taylor, 24, short, slim, with feminine looks, is a hustler with deep-seated, dark needs. He has a horrific past-life he hasn't overcome.

After Warren rescues Taylor for a friend, the men find hot sex as their initial attraction. But, as they learn about pasts, fears, needs and wants, the relationship grows and spreads out. Warren gives Taylor freedom and safety, which he's never had. We get darkness in each man, as we see what they are willing to do. In each other, they find an unusual peace and happiness., but there are spurts of deep sorrow and sadness.
Taylor's violent explosions cause havoc, and they must deal with that. Horrendous tragedy hits each man later in this story, and together, they are able to hang on and survive by their fingertips.

An intense love is brought out, plus an understanding of their demons, and redemption is found. We are put through a wringer, but we never lose faith in our men.
Recommended for lovers of dark tales.
ENJOY.

One Man's Trash by Marie Sexton
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Erotica, Romance
5 Solid Stars

I absolutely loved every word.
I felt so connected to the mc's I wanted to hug them myself.
Extremely well written.
Very fast paced.
Great world build and character build.

I only found 2 typos.

From the very first page you are drawn into Taylor & Warren's story.
The emotions are often raw and powerful.
How they come together and how they deal with each other is very intense.

The adult intimate scenes are beautifully written.
In the beginning they are just about sex, but very quickly they become about love and connecting with someone.

I read some of the other reviews and I don't understand how anyone could give this less than 4 solid stars!
For me it was 5+ stars.
I highly recommend it to all adult romance lovers!

Yes, this one is tough, because saying that Taylor is a mess is putting it mildly.
I have no idea how Warren copes with it. Where he finds his patience and willingness to keep going. The thing is - he is an inherently good guy, even if he does have a tendency to take justice into his hands.
Both guys have had a rough past. Both don't find it easy to talk. And yet (and despite the 15 years age difference) something clicks between them and what grows between them, very slowly and steadily, makes life better for both of them. Helps them to like life again.

Yes, I had to question some things that happen (you know which ones when you read the book) and I felt we left these guys right at the beginning of something beautiful - but also at the beginning of becoming better.

Saying that, I do strongly hope that we will hear and see how they are getting on in the future when we find out the other guys' stories. (And in case you wonder, in this one, the BDSM element is very light, nothing that goes beyond bondage and spanking)
I liked them all: Gray, Charlie (how could you not love a tattooed giant who likes knitting!) and Phil.

I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

I have no idea why it took me this long to read this story. It had been sitting in my library for months but I finally decided to give it a go. I had read the great reviews and I had noticed the high rating, but I still didn't expect to like it this much.

The characters, both main and side, are well thought and nicely developed. The author didn't just create them and then sat back and watched, her characters evolved thoughout their story. Taylor experienced the biggest changes, but he was the one with the most issues of the two. That doesn't mean that Warren stayed the same. They both changed for the better, so they could improve their lives.

The story takes us close to the ugly underbelly that every big city has. Its characters are walking a fine line between legal and illegal. They meet people that the society has rejected. They try to help them and sometimes they succeed. The times that they can't do enough for them, they have to face the outcome. In short, they show us the dark side of the community.

The book is longer than average but I wouldn't say no to a story twice as long. I was never bored with the plot and I was always looking forward to the next page, the next scene, the next conversation.

I liked how Warren and Taylor supported each other, how they protected each other. They had a deep connection and an even deeper love and, even though they had many obstacles to overcome, they never gave up. I liked the way they sometimes talked with comparisons in order to get their point across and I liked the vase that held a special meaning in their relationship.

The story was dark and heavy at times, Taylor had suffered a lot in the past and the aftermath still affected him very much. Warren also had to face some difficult situations in his job and it all came back to than community that is rejecting those down on their luck.

I liked all of Warren's friends, and I'm curious about their backstories so I think I'll continue with this series.

Highly recommended, but proceed with caution.

Wow....

This was quite a heavy emotional piece. Honestly, when I picked it up, I did not expect the depth it would go. Not for the faint hearted because it is emotionally taxing.

I can’t say I liked the characters on the outset. It was more of a constantly changing thing. Part of the reason is also that the characters were somewhat morally ambiguous at times, more so Warren than Taylor, actually.

And things weren’t always tied up with a neat, happy bow. Actually, expect things to go badly, most of the time. I would rate the angst level at a 5/10. But some topics like rape and drugs were just difficult to go through. I’d probably have to add a spoiler tag if I divulged further. So I won’t.

5 stars because Marie Sexton did an incredible job with this book even if it was difficult to read at times. I won’t say I enjoyed reading this due to the difficult topics, but I’d like to give her credit for writing this so well in spite of them. It reminds us what a cruel world we all inhabit is all.

Oh, there’s a HEA, don’t worry. It’s just a lot to get to the HEA.

Expected a BDSM story and got a heartbreaking and angsty tale of past abuse instead. I have no regrets about that, zero. Though I had slight issue with the casual use of a prostitute by the Hero, the two spiritually scarred men (Tay age 24, Warren 38) comes together slowly but beautifully. The characters gradually reveal deeper and more complex layers of themselves to each other and to the reader. So well done!

To some degree the romance and the smexy (and plenty of it there is) took a back seat compared to the powerful overarching storyline. Sometimes that can disappoint the romance reader in me, but in this story the concept worked perfectly.

This book is kind of complicated. Parts I’ve loved, parts I’ve hated. A roller-coaster! 😅. In the beginning I have to admit that I was not cool with their relationship. For me Warren was better than the other guys (but in fact he did the same
Things that the others) and i didn’t really understand why Taylor was doing what he was doing by pure choice 😐. I was sad about these two. I really wanted to stop the book after the first chapters but thanks to my insomnia I’ve continued. I’m glad I did it because that book is good and I really loved it! Many parts in this was hard for me to read and to comprehend. I was like « why someone can do that to himself »? One second I was in love with Taylor...the other I was really fighting to see him like before...and I don’t think I succeeded but I can’t judge him too hard because his life have been one of the worst thing I’ve ever read about. Warren is the BEST. This guy? All Taylor needed to survive. So strong, he endured the worst because he was in love, he did things he never thaught he would do a day because of love and in the end that love saved him for the worst too. This book was not my style (i’m not a fan of bdsm...sorry:/) but it was Marie Sexton. So I read it and I really loved it. Highly recommend but be prepared. Hard reading.

Overall book rating: 3
Audio Book: N/A
Book Cover: 3.8

After reading this... I can honestly say I NOW NEED THEREPY. I’m also booking some sessions for Warren. He clearly needs a lot of it. Meeting Taylor will do that to a man.

Taylor was just too much for me I’m sorry.

I get that his life has been sh+*%y but really? That’s how you choose to deal with it? Going on like a CRAZY person for poor Warren to go ape on you?

I can’t help but think that Warren got the short end of the staw here. He deserves an award cause I would have slapped that boy silly and then book him into the nearest psyche ward after his tantrums.

I think I could have maybe dealt with this if there was a “brighter” future in this train smash?

I didn’t hate this book. I just didn’t LOVE it at all.

I DID however like the group of friends that Warren put together over the years. They are all interesting in their own way and the various ways they choose to live their lives make you pay attention.

********************

This book should definitely have some content/trigger warning. There's a whole package tossed here:
Some scenes were really disturbing and uncomfortable for me.

I expected a BDSM story, as indicated in the title. It's not really. It's full of angst story about past abuse and the main character with a psychological trauma and no self-worth.
Emotionally exhausting.

This is Marie Sexton completely on top of her game. It's gritty, heartbreaking, and it feels real (it's fiction though). Taylor and Warren - usually I get pissed when one person is always the one making concessions or if the balance to crazy is lopsided but I didn't hear because for all that Taylor was he was also the love of Warren's life. This really felt like the push me/pull you that we all live daily where nothing is equal and you have to make tough choices and you have to be willing to accept help. There is a bit of SJW speak in here - I'm sure that will turn some folks off but I felt like it was in line w/Warren and how he might feel. Taylor's background was heartbreaking - while Warren's was certainly that we really only got great insight into one at a time which made it bearable. Loved it - cannot wait to continue on to the second!
