When I’m resuscitated after a car accident, my second chance at life comes with a gift. I can hear the dead.
I’m struggling to figure out my new life as a psychic. I’m trying to figure out my new feelings for my best friend since second grade, Jax. And I’d like to pass my freshman year of college, too.
And then the Hunters show up. Rough Luke and gorgeous Mave. It doesn’t take a psychic to tell those boys are trouble.
They’re trying to stop the November murders. A girl disappears from campus every November, and they believe she’s being taken by a murderous poltergeist. They can’t speak to the dead. They need me.
Most of all, the women on our campus, and the ghosts of the dead girls, need me. I can’t let them down.
I hunt the ghost.
And then the ghost hunts me.
If I can trust Jax and these Hunters to have my back, we might all survive.
But how can I ever reconcile these two worlds? I long for life with Jax, simple and sweet. And I crave the chance to use my gifts, with these two Hunters by my side.
When you come back from the dead, how do you learn to live again?
ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!
I'd just like to clarify that this objectively average rating is only because I've come to expect - and hold May Dawson to - such high standards that this one fell slightly flat. It was still superbly written.
My main issue with it was the fact that I felt like Jax was losing out. Inside her head, Ash very much thought of him as the 'nice guy', with all that entails, and she constantly skipped out on him to go hang out with Luke and Maverick without telling him anything. Meanwhile he pined over her.
I also didn't like how they've apparently been best friends since childhood but she didn't ONCE think of him after she came back from the Far, and them ending up at the same uni was a total coincidence.
Still, Dawson made me fond of all the characters, and it was certainly a good read.
Spin off from another series so the first chapter feels like being dropped in it. I may have to read Ellis’s story. I liked Ash, trying to get out of her sister and the harem’s way. It’s fast and easy to get into.
Feels like the junior edition of the sister and the hunters, especially with the college scene and the guys. Bit of a murder mystery and ghosties. I liked all three guys, Jax, Luke and Mave. No cliffhanger but has a what’s next question feeling.
Ash’s story is off to a great start! Love the three guys in this story; they balance Ash and each other out wonderfully and have the best characters personalities. Slow burn murder/mystery with no real cliffy but definitely keeps door open to a second book! And with the romance part of the story hearing up at the end, it will be interesting to see if the hunters stick around.
Dawson's newest series centers on Ash, whose sister is the heroine of the Lilith and her Harem series (starts with Wild Angels). Good news! Even though I've read Ellis's series, I thought that Dead Girls Club was a very friendly read for those who aren't familiar with Ellis's story.
Like any spin-off, there are some background facts, some nuances, that you might miss out on if you haven't read the related series, but Dawson does a great job at making sure Ash's story still gives readers the essentials needed to both follow along and totally enjoy DGC.
The story revolves around Ash's adventure as a college freshman. Of course, she just so happens to wind up at a school with a haunting, and a sinister fraternity, and a possible serial killer, and her childhood best friend who totally thought she was dead. Because, really, why should getting to class on time be the only thing you need to worry about?
DGC is paced well, with continuous action that develops the plot AS WELL AS (Hallelujah) the characters. Ash winds up getting involved with hunters who are trying to find the source of the haunting before another girl is killed and another ghost is welcomed to campus.
Ash is the kind of leading lady that Dawson does very well- she's brave, she's kind, she's a survivor...and a bit of a hot mess. Ash is the kind of woman who will loyally back up her friends, who'll join a fight even if she's outmatched, who will tackle any problem- but she doesn't do it perfectly. She messes up; she makes the wrong decisions, and she sometimes doubts the path that she's set herself off. In short, even though she's a bit supernatural, Dawson doesn't try to make her anything but human.
Luke, Jax, and Maverick are an interesting study in contrasts. We get the bad boy with hints of a gooier surface underneath, the All-American rule-follower who never knew the paranormal existed, and the sarcastic charmer who seems to have a soft spot for Ash and a healthy sass for his hunting partner. Individually, I like Maverick the best. I think he's the most well-balanced, and I find his story very interesting. Luke and Jax did grab my interest, but I thought they were a little less unique. However, as a package, the three men work very well together. Mave and Luke have an easy chemistry that undeniably builds the rapport of a partnership, a trust and connection, between them. Jax is figuring out where he fits in, the newcomer to this world of ghosts, hunters, and the paranormal, but I think his association with the hunters is going to open his character up in all kinds of ways.
Overall, Dead Girls Club is a promising and fun start to this new series. Highly recommend for fans of Ellis and new readers alike!
So originally I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book, mostly because I was so obsessed with the Wild Angels series (the story of Ash's sister, Ellis) and I couldn't see myself obsessing over another Landon sister. HOWEVER. After reading Dead Girls Club, I can firmly state that Ash is becoming my new favorite. The dynamic between Ash and Jax, Mave, and Luke (oMG LUKE!) is totally unique and separate from what Ellis has with her boys. You get to see a gradual build in their individual relationships that help strengthen their character and back stories, it's amazing to watch it unfold! It's also amazing to see the supernatural world through Ash's eyes, her gift gives a unique insight to the Hunters world that we couldn't necessarily explore in the previous series. I'm really looking forward to Ash's experience in the Far being explored more in depth and the side effects that she may have come out of the ordeal with. Dead Girls Club holds so much potential to explore so many facets of the ghost world and of Ash's fuzzy memories of the Far, I know May Dawson will execute it spectacularly! Also, goes without saying, I look forward to the steamy relationships be explored further (wink, wink). I can't wait to learn more about Luke and Mave's past! To make a long point short, this book is a MUST read, it starts off with a bang and ends on a double bang. You won't want to miss out!
I was really looking forward to this book, and maybe I hyped it up too much in my head, but it just didn't live up too the potential I felt the storyline had. Although the concept was interesting, and the writing was well done, I felt like there was something lacking in regards to character personalities. Ash, our FMC, seemed to not really stick to her guns and just allowed things to happen. To me, Jax was a bit boring and just felt like he never really understood what was going on around him, seeming to only be interested in getting Ash. I enjoyed the characters for Luke and Mave, only because they were a bit more interesting and adventurous. For me the surrounding storyline and plot was what kept my interest, as you were continuously trying to figure out what was going on in the "case" they were investigating.
When she showed up in Alisa's series, I really wanted to read her story. It's interesting. I like the mystery but I'm a little disappointed. This feels like the start of an incomplete series. There were still a lot of unanswered questions in the end and the relationships felt unresolved. We don't even meet Raz in this book. I'm hoping maybe she shows up more in Ellis's series and that's where some of the references in Alisa's final book comes from. I didn't pay attention to dates but I'm assuming this was written before both Alisa and Maddie's books because the writing isn't as polished. There's some typos which don't bother me as much as how many consistency errors there are. Her eyes are described as blue and then suddenly brown. Luke is twenty then apparently eighteen. There's the weird switch from Molly to Holly that's a little confusing in the moment. She kisses Jax because she doesn't want to hold back then time skip and it seems like they haven't kissed and are in this weird pseudo dating but not dating stage. A few times she asks questions for things she has already been told. Spoilery questions below * * * * * * * How does Jax find her at the end? How did he have the other guys number? How did the frat find out her name when it was never said around them? Why did it seem like Molly was saying Luke when Boyd was the bad guy and their names are not similar (we aren't told his first name). Why didn't Luke use a fake identity, wouldn't that have made more sense? How did Boyd drug her at the frat?
This picks up after the story of Ellis, Jacob, Levi, and Ryker from Wild Angels, after Ashley's soul is returned to her body from the Far. It can be read stand-alone, but the background in Wild Angels is interesting and helpful to understanding Ashley. This story is told from Ashley's point of view. After her year in the Far, she decides to go to college, and on the first day meets her childhood boyfriend and then detects a ghost, which starts her question, "what the Hell am I?". Getting justice for the ghost nearly gets her killed. Then she meets Luke as he asks for her help to try to find a ghost that kills a girl every two years. Jax, Ash, and Luke meet with Maverick, a fae. Together, the team investigates the mystery of who killed the girls. There are twists and turns in the plot as Ash tries to decide whom to trust as the tension mounts. There is a lot of relationship tension as Ash tries to define her relationship with the guys, but not sexually. The ending is not a cliffhanger, but does make us wish for more.
Dawson does it again.... story sucks you in and you just want more
I wondered how May would tell us a story about Ashley that wasn’t a cookie cutter theme from the adventures of Ellis and her sexy harem ..... and I wasn’t disappointed.
Ellis has her men and hunting is their life, but where does Ashley fit? We join Ashley as she tries to find some normalcy by starting college and seeing if she can find who she is after spending a year as a spirit in the Far.
Her old best friend Jax can’t believe she is alive and hopes that his schoolboy crush may finally be reciprocal... but life has become a lot more complicated when two sexy hunters need Ash’s help to solve what seems to be a series killing poltergeist.
Ash wanted to find herself and have a normal life but it seems the universe as other ideas for her...
This was an absolutely amazing read. I loved the Lilith series and this was equally amazing. The characters are fantastic, the story arc is full of action, adventure, mystery and surprises and had me on pins and needles the whole way through. However I was a bit let down by Ash, after everything she went through I expected her to be a much stronger character. She started off great, strong, wanting independence and fighting like she did in the far. But she has multiple opportunities to prove herself to the hunters and doesn't seem to have the courage or wherewithal to do so. Despite that, I really liked her sassy, sarcastic attitude, her constant banter with Luke and even her vulnerable side. Can't wait for book two!
Ashley Landon has not had a good few years. After being rescued from the Far by her sister Ellis and Ellis's guys, Ash is kind of lost as to what to do with her life. She finally decides that she wants to go to college. There she runs into an old friend, meets some new ones, and discovers a new ability that she previously had no clue she had. This leads to some interesting encounters, and leaves readers wanting more when it is over. I enjoyed this book immensely for its realistic characters and story line that drew me in and left me curious as to what will happen in the next book. If you have enjoyed May Dawson's previous books, then you will love this one.
I am in a serious book hangover right now. I fell in love with Ash and her boys. I love them all but oh man, Mave, you make me swoon. I think I have a new book boyfriend. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, gave me chills at times, and was a read that completely sucked me in. I definitely wanted a little more burn, but I’m impatient and in love with Mave already, so of course I wanted more heat with them lmao. But 10/10 absolutely in love and will be impatiently waiting for the next book! I hate that I have to wait because the book depression is real right now.
I didn't realize this was a secondary series so it might have been slightly less confusing if I'd read the Lilith series first but it was still easy to follow. Definitely has a Supernatural vibe. No real cliffhanger but I would have preferred a little more detail about what happened to the bad guy, it felt skipped over. I'd probably read the next in the series.
This story was fantastic. It really grabbed my attention, so much so I couldn't put it down. The interactions between characters was entertaining and enjoyable and the characters themselves were engaging and in some cases complicated, Luke. The storyline sucked me in, I loved it. Definitely want to see where this goes.
So this series is tied to her Lilith series. New MC but same world and some same characters. I do feel like if you haven’t read the Lilith series lately this was a little confusing. Remembering who Ash was and what she’d gone through, heck just remembering how this world was set up.
This was an awesome book. I love the characters and I absolutely need more of them . Jax the sweet soul . Maverick the fae and last but least Luke the bad boy . Ash is one badass chick that been to the FAR and back . She tried to Star a new beginning but now that she can see ghosts things start taking a new path
I really enjoyed this. Amazing storyline, never quite read anything like this before and good strong characters. A little disappointed that this was never followed up, it ended on a happy for now with one of the guys and I am a little disappointed that we wont get to see how the relationship with Ash and all 3 of the guys continues and grows.
This is a fantastic start to a new series. I already loved Ash's character so that just made it even better. The guys are awesome and a good fit. This series is going to be as good as if not better than Ellis'. Can't wait for the next book.
4 stars because I was really confused in the beginning. I wasn't sure what was happening. Although after a few chapters I got it and it's a great read. Love the storyline. Ghost hunters, psychics. Love it.
I enjoyed this book immensely. The start we meet a girl who has survived death, and learns she has developed a gift. I liked the way the characters evolved and I’m looking forward to the next installment. Get reading people
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was easy to follow and the characters were real. The sarcasm that is thrown around between Ash and the guys will bring a smile.
I really enjoyed this book and I want to read the next one. I adored Lilith and her reverse harem and I really enjoyed this book that is about her sister. Can't wait for the next book, because there have to be one?! Right!??
Ash has survived the far and now wants to explore on her own. While trying to start new she bumps into her old bff, while also finding out her time in the far and her return has changed her into a medium.
This book is great and I really enjoyed the characters and story. Great job of incorporating mystery with romance in a slow burn rh. Can’t wait for more adventures
I enjoyed reading this book. I can see it bexoming a great series as the characters develop and grow into their roles. I will be waiting for the next one.
