The Inheritance Clause #1

There Are Plenty More Dukes in the Sea

Rate this book
The Templeton siblings have inherited a fortune. But there's a catch...

I, George Lockett, do decree that my grandchildren, herein named, will inherit my fortune in its entirety, so long as they fulfill the following terms. Each person must complete their task to my lawyer's satisfaction or their share of the inheritance shall be forfeit.

There are many reasons Lady Angel Templeton needs her grandfather's money. Of course she wants to be less of a burden to her oldest brother but, goodness, once she has even more money, she can have her pick of the men! A certain Duke of Norwick would be a fool to ignore her...

Unfortunately, their beloved grandfather decided not to make it easy on the Templetons, though Angel is convinced her task must be the hardest. To fulfill the terms of the will, she must perform unpaid duties as a lady's companion for two months to the entirely unmanageable Mrs. Stone.

Two whole months of work.

What's worse, Mrs. Stone is determined to be an even bigger handful than Angel herself.

No...what's worse, is the lady comes along with a miserable wretch of a nephew. While she cannot deny he is handsome in that dark, brooding way so many women adore, Angel does not enjoy the company of serious men--especially when they have already declared they do not trust her one jot.

Well, she doesn't trust him either. It soon becomes obvious why the stern Mr. Hunter is determined to haunt her every move--he must want Mrs. Stone's money!

Well, Angel cannot allow anything happen to her new friend, especially when she risks losing everything.

There Are Plenty More Dukes in the Sea is a Regency romance novella with a little heat. Keep an eye out for the rest of the Templeton siblings, coming very soon!

This was a cute Victorian romance with no angst and very little steam. I liked the premise of the story: Grandfather states in his will that all four siblings have to complete their tasks in order to inherit. The best part is that none of them can fail or everyone will be disinherited. It seemed that their Grandfather knew them fairly well, so each task was exactly what each of them needed.

Angel was a bit spoiled and a tad selfish in the beginning, so when she started as a lady's companion I had doubts about her. But in the course of the book she has changed and actually learned to think and care about others. Rueben, the nephew of the aforementioned lady, had his own misgivings to overcome and took his time to see that Angel was more than just a pretty face.

I liked the MCs, and as a couple they were very sweet. The editing was ok with only a couple if misprints. I wished for a bit more tension since the proposed villain of the story was not much of a villain after all and was dealt with in a manner that left me wanting. The explicit intimate scene in the end reminded me of modern time too much with the language used and didn't suit the style of the book, so it was not the favorite ending, but all in all, I enjoyed this short novella.

Short story. Interesting concept. Clean story until epilogue which includes a sex scene with husband and wife. Felt a bit weird and not really needed.

No...what's worse, is the lady comes along with a miserable wretch of a nephew.

My Thoughts:

Angel is in for a rude awakening. Her task may seem impossible to her but it really is an easy one. Being a companion for a short stint to this lovely older lady is a joy.
Mrs. Stone's nephew is the real stumbling block in this delightful and sometimes humorous novella.
This quick read is the first in this new series.
I gave this sweet, short read 4.4 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development. We get more than a glimpse at the characters of all involved.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and am reviewing voluntarily.

I do like when I’m looking for a short read to pick up a book by this author, as this one was a new release, it was perfect for a late read.
The book’s premises were very intriguing, I do wonder what will be the other siblings tasks.
Lady Angel Templeton is not the usual debutant, she is too reckless to stay quiet, gracing ballrooms walls with her sparkling behaviors, why she has quite a reputation, not scandalous but not a shy wallflower too.
She is a young woman enjoying life at its fullest, why when she is tasked to become a lady’s companion, she thought she will face two dull months in the company of an old woman. But her kind nature and graceful personality make the best with it and she falls under the charm of her charge and her nephew.
Reuben Hunter at first was glad when his aunt decided to get a companion, just he never thought it would be a lady of the Ton, and one known for her unusual behaviors. But the more he get to know her, the more he falls under her spell, her exuberance is what draws her to him, the too uptight and reserved Mr Hunter.
It was an enjoyable short novella.

Regency historical romance at it's best! What could be better than a new series, that will feature four siblings who were left an inheritance? Wait, it gets better! Each must complete a task assigned for a two month period, by their grandfather, in order to receive their money! Angel, the heroine of this story, had to become a lady's companion with no wages. At the beginning Angel seemed this spoiled debutante who only wants to have fun and pursue one man she has her eyes on.
So, she becomes a companion to Lady Jean Stone, an eccentric aunt of Mr Reuben Hunter. Unfortunately Reuben does not trust her and thinks she may be there to steal Aunt Jean's money! Angel has her own opinions about him, but an attraction cannot be denied! I enjoyed Aunt Jean, Angel and Reuben so much and could not turn the pages fast enough to see what happened.
Samantha Holt's wonderful writing always warms my heart and her delightful humor and unique plots are so entertaining I am always joyous to see a new story! Cannot wait for the rest of this series!! PS Don't you love the title!

I was enjoying this predictable little bit of froth until the last chapter. Graphic sex. After all that innocence and sweetness we had to have a chapter of gratuitous sex? Awkward and forced in my opinion.
Well, to each his own. If that’s what some readers need for the story to feel complete, there’s nothing wrong with that.
It’s just not what I want to read. So I’ll be giving this author a miss from now on.

Angel sneaked quietly into the room, hoping no one would notice how late she was as the lawyer shuffled through papers, looking nervous. Her deceased grandfather’s house would go to her mother – since grandfather had no sons. Then the reason for the lawyer’s sweating became clear. The grandchildren would inherit money but only if they fulfilled certain terms and within a period of two months. If they failed their tasks, the money would go to Mr. Hastings, a beast of a man who dishonored their cousin and ran off with a nursemaid! No one felt he deserved any money at all!

Reuben visited his Aunt Jean and found her digging around in the dirt of the garden. The gardener was so grateful when Reuben invited her inside for tea. He loved his aunt and was very protective of her. Eccentric, but with a lively energy, Aunt Jean occasionally seemed to show the signs of her age through mild forgetfulness. She was excited that her new companion would soon join her. Reuben was too, since he feared she was lonely and having someone to be with might keep her out of mischief.

For her fulfillment of the terms of the will, Lady Angel Templeton must perform actual work – performing tasks as a lady's companion for two months for Mrs. Stone. She shuddered at the thought of being isolated in the countryside; it would be so boring! Even worse, she would be away from the Duke of Norwick who might be lured off by another woman. Seth accompanied his sister and encouraged her out of the carriage with a rousing speech. When she found Mrs. Stone painting flowers in the garden, her ideas of a little old lady needing naps and spoon-feeding were quickly dispelled. Mrs. Stone was lively and a creative passion shown from her eyes as she flung the artist’s brush around, getting paint all over Angel’s cheek and dress. She told Angel to paint from the heart and with abandon because there was no other way to live life!

However, when Reuben arrived and found them painting, he was angry. He asked his aunt to request tea and used the time with Angel to berate her for allowing his aunt to be outside in the cool weather. He warned her he would be watching her, as he was aware of her reputation of being frivolous and her outrageous behavior in the pursuit of entertainment. A friend of his in London had written to him to be wary of her, and that her family might be in need of money. Angel did not back down at his scowl and the two of them glared at each other. He figured Angel could be after his aunt’s money. She figured the same about him.

When Reuben came to see his aunt again, he saw Cartwright’s carriage and he hurried inside. He heard laughter and sneaked up to see what was going on. He didn’t like Cartwright’s flirtation with Angel, so he stepped forward and claimed he would be staying there for a couple weeks when Cartwright had indicated he would stop around more now that Angel was there. Actually, that would make it easier to keep an eye on Angel! But the more he did so, the more he found things to like about her. And she likewise was taking a closer look at him as well. He was beginning to think what others thought as her flirting was simply her ability to enjoy herself with others. And she was becoming aware that it was quite fulfilling to put others’ needs before her own. But when Mrs. Stone’s lawyer met with Reuben, and Angel listened in from the hallway, she heard the lawyer tell him that he was being given full control of all the money. How could he do that to his aunt? Was all his love just so he could get at the money? Or would she realize Mrs. Stone gave him this power to protect her from people like Cartwright who would try to swindle her as the years went on and she was less able to protect herself?

I loved this book! It started out full of pre-conceived notions that would be completely turned around as each person grew and matured within the experiences provided to them. It was such a joy seeing how each character handled it. Aunt Jean was a pure delight, proving that getting older does not stop one from enjoying life. Join in the fun of this wonderful story and see the wisdom of Angel’s grandfather in the tasks he set before his grandchildren to put them on the right course in life.

When the Templetons' grandfather died, his will was read, and the gathered family has quite a shock at the conditions of the inheritance. The four grandchildren would have tasks to perform if they were to inherit or the money would go to a man they all despised. When they saw what they would have to do, Seth Minerva, Theo, and Angel were crestfallen. Lady Angel Templeton, pampered and spoiled débutante would have to work!

I had enjoyed book 2, A Rake Never Changes His Spots, so much that I purchased this book right afterwards. As each book features one of the Templeton heirs, I am thrilled that this means four books, and I hope the next instalments follow quickly. After only a few paragraphs, I was almost giggling at the idea of Angel, a Regency party girl, having to work for two months. Her conquest of the Duke of Norwick will have to wait. Meanwhile, Reuben Hunter is relieved that his ancient, forgetful great-aunt Jean is getting a companion. A reliable young person to see that no harm comes to the mischievous old lady! That's not exactly Angel's forte, but it's only two months.

Reuben is a very serious young man, a bit of a grouch, and he doesn't trust Angel, at first. She is her enchanting self and Aunt Jean is quite taken with sunny Angel. The romance between Angel and Reuben progressed nicely, the characters are engaging and well defined. There was a misunderstanding, which thankfully was short-lived, but the way Aunt Jean's problem was handled didn't seem quite believable. I felt the epilogue - the sole sex scene - was unnecessary, and seemed included as an afterthought. But all in all, THERE ARE PLENTY MORE DUKES IN THE SEA is a quick read, evenly paced and elegantly written; it is young, light, charming and fun. I think The Inheritance Clause series is a very clever idea, and I can't wait to read the other installments.

THERE ARE PLENTY MORE DUKES IN THE SEA is the first book in the Inheritance Clause series. They will need to be read in the order of release.

There is no doubt from the beginning that Angel is a self-centered, spoiled, young woman. She is the youngest of four and, quite obviously, well loved by all. Still, her grandfather was apparently quite wise and determined that his grandchildren should be more than society leaders. He wants them to value all that they have and all that they are. I believe that is the impetus to his strange inheritance clause. Each is given a task that will force them to grow as individuals. Because this is a romance series, we know that they will each find their HEA while finding that growth.

The story is entertaining, light-hearted, and witty. Angel’s charge, Mrs. Stone, is a reminder that old age does not need to mean sedentary. She is lively and warm. She is the kind of person I would want for a friend.

Though the attraction is immediate, the romance is very slow to build. It is perfectly paced and feels natural. I absolutely loved every minute of reading Angel and Rueben’s story.

I can’t wait to get my hands on her brother, Theo, but then again, I always did like the rakes (bad boys). His story will be Ms. Holt’s next release.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via BookSprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Lady Angel Templeton is self centred & flirtatious & in order to fulfill the terms of the will, she must perform unpaid duties as a lady's companion for two months to the entirely unmanageable but adorable Mrs. Stone. Once she has the inheritance she can return to London & a certain Duke of Norwick who would be a fool to ignore her

An entertaining, captivating novella that I read in a sitting. In the beginning I didn’t warm to Angel, she seemed to be an empty headed, self centred member of the ton but gradually I saw her as so much more & she really came to care for Aunt Jean, her struggle with the painting easel had me laughing but also warmed my heart as she persevered & didn't give up which I think the Angel at the start of the story would have instructed a servant to do it. She also brought a lightness & joy to the household. Reuben is lovely so protective of his Aunt & attracted to Angel from the start. There were a couple of misunderstandings that added to my enjoyment. I’m looking forward to Minnie, Theo & Seth’s challenges

A charming story of becoming the better version of oneself. Lady Angel Templeton has always been the fun one. Able to find the fun in any situation, she charm and flirts her way through life. This has gained her a bit of a reputation, one that is not quite a true picture of the woman. When her grandfather leaves her the task of becoming a companion for two months in the country, she is certain it will be a bore. Instead she encounters a lively, energetic older woman who she can not help but love and her stern, uptight nephew who makes her a better person. The changes in Angel were a lovely evolution of the kindness and selfless nature truly hidden behind her gregarious nature. Her loving ways with his aunt also bring out a better version of Reuben Hunter. Allowing himself to find the fun he has been missing. Their story is delightful from their battling banter to their eventual camaraderie. A light, enjoyable read.

There Are Plenty More Dukes in the Sea by Samantha Holt is the First book in The Inheritance Clause Series. This is the story of Angel Templeton and Reuben Hunter.
Angel is the youngest in her family and with that comes some spoiling which may have lead to their Grandfather's will being so strict on how they will gain the money. Angel thinks she wants a Duke that she has had her eye on, so when the will is read she knows that with that money she can be less of a burden to her family, but more importantly catch the eye of a Duke. But she has to take care of Mrs. Stone for a few months to get that money which she thinks will be extra hard. But she soon comes to care for her its her nephew, Reuben who is becoming a problem. Reuben is stern and not to trusting so from the start he has doubts about Angel. Both butting heads but something else starts to happen between them too.
Loved this story...such a fan of Ms. Holt's writing!

This book starts out a little differently than most Regency novels. Angel and her siblings are assigned tasks by their grandfather’s will. She has to get a job! Oh my goodness! Reuben absolutely loves his aunt but really doesn’t have the time to watch over her all the time. Hence, Angel is given the job but he doesn’t think she is the right kind of person. I don’t quite understand how the title fits the story as there is only one duke and he is left behind in London. Of course all the conflicts lead to their Happily-Ever-After. But I still want to know what her sister’s task is… Enjoyable reading.

Four siblings, four tasks to get the inheritance from grandpa. The flirty youngest sister of a marquess has to work as a companion of an old lady for two month. Even though she had her eyes set on a duke she falls in love with the stuffy untitled nephew who distrusts her in the beginning.

It was okay, if not quite simple, and I did not really feel it sizzling between these two.
That the epilogue was entirely the detailed sex scene that was missing during the book was a real downer to me, how unnecessary, as if the author thought she needs to swim with the Shades Of Gray crowd and peg that one on.

There are three more book in the series, I would probably take a look at Minerva's story, the bookish sister with a task that sends her traveling. I love those nerdy types ;)

This is the first book in a new series - it is a stand alone story (no cliffhangers). At the reading of her grandfathers will Angela and her siblings are told that they will inherit from their grandfather if they each successfully complete a task each within two months. Angela's task is be a lady's companion to Mrs Smith. Angela has her eye on marrying a Duke but while with Mrs Smith she meets her nephew. At first they do not see eye to eye but they have to eventually come to see that they are each looking after Mrs Smith in their own way.
The story is light hearted and fun and easy to read. There is one steamy love scene in the epilogue between a married couple.
I enjoyed reading this book

I enjoyed this novella. A fun plot offers a nice blend of humor and sweetness. I really liked Reuben. I thought his character was a bit refreshing from the norm and he was quite simply a "good guy". The character of Angel had to grow on me a bit (But I think that was totally the point). Her experiences forced her to grow emotionally and see the world differently. This raised her appeal and it was not long before I was wholeheartedly rooting for this couple. After finishing this book I am looking forward to seeing the other characters stories unfold in their upcoming books. This is my frank, freely posted review.

England 1818.

Grandpa recently died & left tasks for his adult Templeton
grandkids. Upon successful completion of tasks (verified
by his solicitor), each of the 4 would share his inheritance.

Brooding Reuben, a MP, was concerned about his favorite
Aunt Jean. Sweet, spontaneous, but vulnerable to invest-
ment schemes, Auntie, experienced variable memory. Lady
Angel, a marquis'sister (youngest Templeton sib), became
Jean Stone's companion x2 mos., as a condition of her late
Grandpa's will.

Reuben made assumptions about Angel, they made a truce,
Angel made assumptions about H, they declared another
truce. They admitted mutual love. The end.

Aunt Jean was endearing, the rest seemed somewhat bland.

This one is adorable such wonderful canter between the characters and great twists too. Perhaps in this one Grandfather did know best, but we will need to see if there are other books that will verify that. Angel has a task and she is set on doing it yet there are obstacles such as Mr. Hunter that could cause so many problems. This is a first-rate story you really should pick up. Historical romance is one of my favourite genres, so I was excited to read this story. I understand it is the first book in a series, but it also works well as a standalone novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting. The story is well written and the plot is intriguing. The author successfully brings the era to life and creates memorable and compelling characters. Angel is a captivating and engaging heroine and Reuben is a charming and swoon-worthy hero. Aunt Jean is a fun and mischievous force to be reckoned with. This is definitely an entertaining and enjoyable historical romance with all the bells and whistles - and even a few hints of what’s next in the series. This is an entertaining story and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Sweet story. Angel is everything unlike her name. She is vivacious and flirty. She is adventurous and active. She has her heart set on snagging a particular Duke. Rueben is a stickler for rules and safety. He is all that is proper. He wants to do all that is right for the ones he loves. Then they meet each other. They realize that they can be perfect for each other just the way they are. The dialogue is flirtatious and fun. The characters are likable. It’s a great way to start a new series.

Book one of the Inheritance Clause series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone. Novella told in dual POV with HEA. In order to inherit her grandfather's fortune Angel must work for two months as a lady's companion. Reuben doesn't trust his aunt's new companion and decides to keep an eye on her. They both jump to conclusions about the other and there are misunderstandings in the two months. I enjoyed this sweet story and look forward to more in this series!

His Real Angel!
Though I am a bit puzzled by this book's title, the story itself is an absolute delight!
It is well written with wonderful and believable characters who act quite naturally, make mistakes and then have fantastic realizations about each other.
I couldn't put this book down and read into the early hours... That should tell you how much I enjoyed it and I hope you will too!

3.5 ROUNDED UP TO 4

The 4 adult Templeton children may inherit wealth from their grandfather. But, before they can inherit, each of them have been assigned a task. The will has set specific tasks for each of them.

Angel is the youngest of the 4. She has a reputation for being irresponsible, careless and self involved. Her grandfather set her the task of finding a job and working for 2 months. Her job is to become a companion to an elderly lady.

Mrs Stone is a woman who has memory lapses at times. Most of the time she is fine. She is not the type of woman to sit around in the house doing nothing. She paints, she gardens and generally she loves being active. She has always been an active person and becoming older has not changed that.

Her nephew Reuben is familiar with Angel’s reputation. He immediately worries that she will never be a responsible companion for his beloved aunt.

This is a very quick read.

Ms Holt has created a light and airy plot that moves along at a good pace.

I like character driven stories and the characters in this story are front and center. Angel is not an airhead. She cares about other people in spite of what people believe. She is an intelligent woman.

Reuben is not a stick. Yes he never smiles. Yes he frowns most of the time. But, he has worries. And underneath everything, he does actually have a sense of humor. He also loves his aunt very much.

Both Angel and Reuben learn that first impressions are not always accurate.

A fun and quick read.
