Is it the perfect escape?

Whitaker Island is more than a getaway. For Tessa Jenkins, the remote strip of land in Washington state is a sanctuary. Fleeing from a shattering scandal, she has a new name, a chance at a new beginning, and a breathtaking new view: Hansen Rye. It’s hard not to crush on Whitaker’s hottest handyman. At six-foot-three and all kinds of fine, he’s also intensely private—and the attraction between them soon simmers dangerously out of control.

…or a private trap for two lovers?

After a devastating family tragedy, Hansen finds the pebbled shores of the faraway island to be an ideal refuge. Letting down his guard for the sexy, impulsive Tessa is an unexpected pleasure. But there’s another newcomer to Whitaker. He’s no stranger to Hansen. And when he’s murdered, the crime casts a threatening shadow. As suspicion falls on Hansen, all his secrets are about to collide with Tessa’s. Now the pasts they were determined to outrun are catching up to them. So is a killer who’s putting their love—and their lives—on the line.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

“Everyone around here really does have a secret, don’t they?”
Ben’s smile came roaring back. “Welcome to Whitaker.”

A small island off the coast of Washington with only a little over two hundred residents, Whitaker has become an unofficial destination for people looking to escape into obscurity. Hansen Rye is taking a breather from his high pressured life and turmoil resulting from his sister Alexis' death. He's strengthened his even usual grumpy personality and tried to become even more walled off but has still become friends with Ben, local head of police, and Tessa Jenkins, the woman he is currently trying to not fall for.
Tessa is hiding out in Whitaker, trying to lay low from her own family drama but can't help teasing the impromptu handyman, Hansen. His grumpy demeanor gives way to can't help but fix things for local residents and the look in his eyes when he's staring at her, draws her back for more.
However, after a body turns up on Tessa's lawn, secrets are about to get revealed and feelings are about to be confronted.

“Not you.” He shrugged. Even took a step back. Generally looked uncomfortable in his skin, which never happened. “You, I like.”
She almost spit out a mouthful of coffee. “Since when?”
“Let’s say you’re growing on me.” He sighed and crossed his arms. Then uncrossed them again.

Her Other Secret was a mixture of mystery, thriller, romance, and ending suspense. When the reader comes into the story, Hansen and Tessa already have a friendship established and are just trying to not act on sexual feelings. I missed seeing their initial draw and spark, it feels like we missed out on some great teasing and poking of the bear (Hansen) by Tessa to break down his walls. Their chemistry and back and forth was good, the word love was brought up far too quickly for the lack of building blocks I was getting from them emotionally, some sex scenes felt a bit out of place, and while they had good friendship chemistry, they didn't heat up the pages as much as I would have liked. The majority of the story focuses more on the murder mystery and as such, the romance plot suffered some.

All Hansen knew was that his past had caught up with him in the worst possible way.

This was more mystery/thriller than romantic suspense to me, the pace of the characters investigating is slower as the reader's mind is supposed to be racing as to who is involved, why, and for what purposes. There is a locked room mystery feel to it with the setting being an island currently experiencing storms that is keeping residents from getting off the island or on. The connection of the murder victim to Hansen was intriguing and kept the high stakes feel alive but some of the key players felt removed from the story. Hansen's family is discussed and his close relationship with his brother, but we never meet them and for the murder victim playing such a key role, we never got a pov or scene with them before they died. The villain/s also had a removed feeling to them, their wrap-up and reveal didn't quite have a big impact or feel like a rewarding payoff. The last twenty percent had more of the romantic suspense feel but the change of pace gave the ending more of a rushed feel than crescendo conclusion as characters were found out or cleared.

The author has definitely created a place rife with intrigue but I felt a bit lost at times, how we're just supposed to go along with how Whitaker is both a known place to disappear on and yet you can disappear on it. If this is indeed a start to a series, the structure of the island, how the island is owned by a mysterious rich person but gives the running of it over to a board, and some short but poignant introductions to some characters encumbered this story at times but it would make sense as laying groundwork for a series.

There was some missing character development, Hansen and Ben had a enjoyable relationship but would have liked to have seen how it started, same with Hansen and Tessa's friendship that their chemistry eventually dictated had to be more. I also thought Tessa's secret, that we don't get let in on until around the sixty percent mark, felt somewhat tagged on; not enough time to gain an emotional footing and a resolution that felt partially empty. The word love was used too quickly but Dimon always writes couples that have believable connections and are compelling in any small way to read about. I think I caught a hint of something possibly brewing between our local PD Ben and the extremely mysterious woman named Maddie who answers the department phones remotely. Whitaker seems like it has residents with stories to tell and I'm curious enough to show up if there are more books to come.

She didn’t believe a woman needed a formal partner to feel whole. She’d seen her mother thrive and love without ever walking down the aisle. But the idea of sharing the burden, having someone to help her fight in situations like this . . . The way he kissed her, touched her. The smile he saved only for her. Yeah, love.

Should I read in order?
This is book 1 from the Whitaker Island series.

Basic plot:
Whitaker Island is a getaway for people that have a past they want to hide. But the past comes to find Hansen and Tessa works with him to solve a mystery before he can be wrongly accused…

Give this a try if you want:
- contemporary romantic suspense
- island location
- lots of forced proximity
- lower relationship angst
- protective hero
- mystery to solve
- some light unrequited longing from both characters
- small town vibe – 211 residents on the island
- 6’ 3” handyman hero (he’s at least 6” taller than the heroine)
-
- medium to higher steam – 4 full scenes (some parts are a bit light)

Ages:
- Heroine is 26, hero is 35

First line:
People didn’t wash up on Whitaker Island’s pebbled shores by accident.

My thoughts:
I usually would say any type of romantic suspense is not for me, but I ended up enjoying this one. I loved how much Tessa and Hansen were together. I love the island setting. I loved all the forced proximity as they worked through the danger and mystery.

This one is relatively low angst, which isn’t really my thing but I found it comforting as an audiobook listen. I wanted a bit more sexual tension – we walk into this story already started a bit and both have a bit of unshared longing for each other that we missed on page. But I did like that they hadn’t really started a solid relationship yet so we got to see most of the fun parts.

This was my first by HelenKay Dimon and I would definitely try another. This one was a nice mix of relationship and mystery with some decent steam thrown in.

All Tessa Jenkins wanted was a new start. She suffered a terrible scandal and hope that with a new name she can at least begin anew. Hansen Rye is now working on Whitaker Island as a handyman. This is a good distraction for him as he has suffered a tragedy in his family. He hopes to put his past behind him. However, others have something else in mind.

When Tessa sees an apparently unmanned boat, then a man coming from the water, she wants to go after him. Hansen insists she stay put and he chases the man, but is unable to find him. Shockingly, the man turns up dead, and circumstances lead Hansen to be the likely killer. Fortunately for him, his good friend is the local cop and his innocence is being proved, although things are quite guarded.

The two form a fine pair as their secrets and past begin to collide with their present. They begin to work together to try and figure things out. While this is happening, Tessa and Hansen develop a strong connection and, despite the dangers quickly assailing them, they begin to fall in love.

The blend of romance, suspense, action and danger in this book was done quite well. I loved this book and read it straight through in a few short hours. It was very well paced and had a thrilling conclusion.

Her Other Secret is the first book in the Whitaker Island series. While Tessa and Hansen strive to find the killer, other characters are introduced into the story. The characters went from the very likable to the the despicable. The series continues with The Secret She Keeps, due for release this December. I have definitely put this book on my radar.

Many thanks to Avon and to Edelweiss for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

I've always thought a good romance was the perfect antidote to depressing or challenging times: a guaranteed happy ending goes a long way to lifting my spirits. The problem is finding a GOOD romance. I must be feeling particularly curmudgeonly because I spent most of my time with this book exclaiming "Whaaaat?!" I had hoped to find a new author to enjoy and I'm sorry that this one is not it.

On p. 19 I read that hero Hansen "wasn't in the mood for cryptic conversation." I agreed with him because the first 20 pages were full of choppy bits of dialogue interrupted by so many FEELINGS that the conversation made no sense at all.

A pair of 30-something men who've known each other for a couple of months are "best friends" on this island setting, despite the fact that they know nothing about each other. One spends his time teasing the other about whether or not he likes heroine Tessa, much like a pair of high school girls giggling over a crush.

The language is high school-ish as well: "fury seethed inside her" on p. 292 is typical. A few pages further "A couple stepped in front of them. It took a few seconds for his vision to clear and who they were to make sense in his head." Who writes like this?!

Most of the action takes place off-screen so-to-speak, until we come to the over-the-top "exciting denouement" which made me roll my eyes even more. Despite the fact that Tessa is bound hand and foot, she leaps overboard from a boat to save the father she hates. (How does one "leap overboard" without the use of hands or feet please?). Handsome hero is right there in the water to hand her an oxygen tank and a mask, and to cut her bonds. He then climbs (apparently soundlessly) onto said boat to deal with bad people. A bit later Tessa heaves the oxygen tank up out of the water and onto the boat. (Explain to me, please, how someone treading water can lift a heavy object high overhead and throw it. . .). She too seems able to nimbly climb up out of the water and onto the boat and uses the convenient oxygen tank to brain one of the villains. . . on the elbow. No graphic violence here.

All I can say is "No, No. NO." Where are Linda Howard or Suzanne Brockmann when you need them? Give me someone who can actually write an intelligible story please. I shall remain a grump a bit longer.

I am a sucker for a romantic thriller and I loved the synopsis of this one, so I was pretty eager to get to it.

I liked Tessa and Hansen right from the start. They're both stubborn and maybe a little {or in his case, a lot} prickly and I was absolutely amused reading these two have a battle of wits at nearly every contact. There's a pretty large cast of characters here and we really only get to know a couple, so it was really effective in keeping me guessing.

Plot wise, it was good. The first murder happens almost immediately and the suspense didn't let up. There are a few threads and reading it unravel kept me captivated. I loved the idea of a small island where you don't really know your neighbors.

Overall, it was a great jump into this genre and any book that has me sneaking chapters at work has to be something I'd read again. And I definitely will, because I'm eager to see if I can pick up on the breadcrumbs next time.

Review posted on Got Fiction?

This book has a grumpy hero and a sunshiney heroine. I love that trope! And I was in the mood for a good Romantic Suspense, so I jumped in!

Everyone who lives on Whitaker Island has secrets. That’s the draw. It’s a small community where everyone knows everyone, but their secrets are their own.

Tessa has moved to Whitaker Island as a temporary hiding place, or a fresh start. She hasn’t decided, but since she can work remotely, she isn’t in any hurry to figure it out. So she’s enjoying the slow paced, small town vibe this island has going on. But there’s one thing…she’s curious. I hesitate to use the word nosy, since she’s not gossipy or into everyone’s business, but if something strange happens, she wants to know what’s going on. Like the yacht that’s been parked off the island in a weird spot, with no signs of life, and no lights on for a couple of days. Because she doesn’t know what to do, after all, it isn’t illegal, it’s just weird, she calls in Hanson Rye. He’s the town handyman he’s super hot, and she’s got a crush on him. Half the island does.

Hanson doesn’t really react. He figures it’s a boat anchored near an island and it’s tourist season. What’s there to worry about? Sure it isn’t in a usual spot, but it’s not that weird. And as they’re talking, a man in a suit walks out of the ocean as if it’s the most normal thing in the world and walks into the trees. This cements Tessa’s fears that something weird is going on.

They go to the police officer on the island and have him check it out. While he investigates, Tessa does some digging of her own, which sort of leads into her personality. For someone hiding from something, she sure doesn’t know how to keep quiet or hide. I feel like she couldn’t let the police take over, she had to know, and felt like she would Nancy Drew the investigation.

***Small Spoilers***

I felt like the fact that people were gossiping about a fight and blood everywhere was lost during the investigation. They came back to the argument, but never mentioned the blood, nor the fact that someone was banging on her door and turning the doorknob before Hanson came over and it wasn’t him. Then there’s a dead body on her doorstep and they never tell the police about the person trying to get in?

I have mixed feelings on this book. I read after the fact that the author pitched it as “Imagine Jessica Fletcher’s Cabot Cove with more sex, more killing, and a lot of dysfunction.” I wish I’d read that first, because I might have understood Tessa’s desire to investigate better. In most Romantic Suspenses, the ones I prefer anyway, usually the hero and heroine are in constant danger and the hero is super protective and in some form law enforcement, or military. So I usually can suspend belief since I’m not, and I feel like they’d be braver or better suited for that. In this book, they’re both just normal people. So it didn’t make sense for her to investigate. With Jessica Fletcher, she always had some new angle or idea the police didn’t see. Here, I didn’t feel Tessa had that going for her. Don’t get me wrong, I liked her and thought she was great, I just didn’t see the reason she was investigating anything.

Maybe I feel that for a Romantic Suspense, this was very character-driven rather than action-driven. With as many murders as there were, there should have been more action. Instead it felt like it took a really long time to figure things out.

I did enjoy the author’s voice, and I did grab the next book in the series. I hope that now I see how she pitched it, I’m a bit less judgemental over the characters.

If you can get past the absurd set-up, you'll probably like this one more than I did. I couldn't let go of the fact that the heroine called the hero, the local handyman she has a surly relationship with, about a disabled-looking yacht off the coast and not, oh I don't know, the Coast Guard or the local law! Further proof I could never be a romance heroine. I think logically.

I also never understood what the hero did to earn such devotional trust among the secondary characters. Frankly, he looks guilty as hell. And yet everyone harps on about how much they "trust" him. Um, why exactly? I get that they keep saying it but WHY are they saying it? How did he manage to build these relationships and this level of trust when he's been the Surliest Surly Man to Ever Surle?

I did eventually get sucked into the mystery, and while the identity of the Bad Guy isn't a stretch to figure out - the unraveling of the motive(s) was fun.

Meh, for me. YMMV.

Her Other Secret starts off with a mystery and, to be honest, I was confused at first! We meet our heroine, Tessa, as she has called for the island handyman, Hansen. I was confused because she called a handyman to look at a boat that had been sitting in the water, unmoving, with no signs of life. Why would you call a handyman?

Regardless, I kept reading and discovered Tessa is so quirky! She insists that the man that walked out of the water was a merman and, despite Hansen begging her to stop, she continues to call him that. Whitaker Island was a bit of a refuge for Tessa, so she is a bit unnerved by this mystery man. Hansen is also harboring some secrets too. These two have chemistry for sure, but since they are both hiding things, they don't really act on it. Hansen, especially, feels that he simply cannot get a woman involved in his mess of a life.

Ok, so Hansen's secrets are literally turning up dead on the island and it all makes him look hella guilty. He tells the story of what happened to his sister, and I was like "I have heard this somewhere...". Y'all I watch a LOT of true crime stuff. A LOT. And when he tells the story of a husband who says his wife fell trying to take a picture while hiking, I was sure I had heard it somewhere. And I had! You can read the news article about Herald Henthorn and his wife Teri. So, anyway, knowing how that real life story played out, I was wondering if this fictional version would go in a similar way. Obviously Hansen things his sister's husband was responsible but why is he now across the country on the same tiny island?

The story is a bit of a whodunit mixed with small town drama. These people have nothing else to do but gossip and spy on each other! While the plot seems focused on Hansen and HIS secret, the story is called Her Other Secret for a reason. While I didn't find the characters to be the most engaging as a reader, the plot is interesting and if you enjoy mysteries with a hate to love you romance vibe, Her Other Secret is a solid pick for a weekend read!

Her Other Secret is a book about revenge, greed and self-importance. Tessa Jenkins needed to escape Washington after a scandal decided to move to Whitaker Island. However, her quiet and peaceful sanctuary shattered when a body found on her front step was ex-brother-law of her handyman Hansen Rye. The readers of Her Other Secret will continue to follow Tessa and Hansen to find out what happens.

Her Other Secret is the first book I have read of HelenKay Dimon and was an enjoyable book to read. I like HelenKay Dimon writing style that allowed me to engage with this book from the first page. I love HelenKay Dimon portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Her Other Secret is well written and researched by HelenKay Dimon. I like HelenKey Dimon description of the setting of Her Other Secret that compliments the plot of this book.

The readers of Her Other Secret will understand the devastating consequences that con artists can do to the mark and everyone involved. Also, the readers of Her Other Secret will learn about living on a small remote island.

I recommend this book.

Tessa Jenkins fled to Whitaker Island armed with a new name, and with the hope of escaping her scandal filled past.... but she's not the only new visitor to arrive in town. As soon as she hits town she meets one of it's sexiest residents, handyman Hansen Rye, and the moment they meet there are some obvious sparks. But she is wary of letting him in, and not really looking for love at the moment, but that doesn't stop him from coming around. But as they are exploring their chemistry, there is also danger circling around them, and it's bound to bring trouble to both of their lives, whether they want it or not!

From beginning to end Her Other Secret held my full attention, it's action packed story line came brimming with loads of steam and thrilling mystery to feed my romantic suspense addiction! With danger constantly lurking and the heat simmering between Tessa and Hansen there is plenty of action to be found between the pages of this one. It also came with a few unexpected twists and turns too, just when I thought I knew where things were going, Ms. Dimon's cleverly crafted words would leave me surprised all over again. I really enjoyed this one, and was thrilled to learn that there were plans for more visits to Whitaker Island on the horizon, I can't wait to see who moves to this charming little island next! If you are a romantic suspense fan, then I have a feeling this one will be right up your alley, as it comes with the perfect makings to be a thrilling little literary escape, with a tranquil island setting to boot! Highly recommend!

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is a fun and exciting story and a great summer beach read. A murder on an isolated island must be solved before there are more victims. Together, Tessa and Hansen help the island’s only policeman wade through island gossip, conflicting stories and dark secrets to find the killer.

On an island where no one is what they seem and everyone seems to have a secret past, it is difficult for readers to know characters well enough to relate to them or like them. Tessa is a likeable character but like most island residents, her background is a mystery. Similarly, Hansen is attractive - but we don’t get to know him until quite a ways into the story. The island residents are colourful and quirky and while we get a few obvious suspects from the start, it’s almost impossible to trust anyone on the island. I liked the setting and I enjoyed the colourful characters.

This is one of those difficult reviews where I don’t want to spoil anything by mentioning any part of the plot. So I won’t. I will say that the story moves quickly and I had to work to keep up with Tessa and Hayden’s investigation. It’s a story where even the main characters feel like potential suspects and I loved that I couldn’t be certain about anyone. However, a few of the surprises are predictable and I guessed some of the characters’ secrets far too quickly.

One of my least favourite things about romantic suspense is the implausible sex - this time in the middle of a murder investigation during a storm bad enough to isolate the island completely from the mainland. I get that this is a necessary part of the hybrid genre but it feels a bit odd, as does the instalove between two completely secretive, guarded characters.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I felt like I started reading in the middle of the story and beginning was filled in over the course of the book.

Apparently Whitaker Island is a little like the island of misfit toys. People come to Whitaker Island to be hide from the world that has roughed them up and left them beaten. They come to hide from people or secrets, sometimes both.

We discover after the death of a former friend/acquaintance of Hansen the reasons for his move to Whitaker. As the book progresses we also find out Tessa's reasons for hiding. And, it seems, that most people who live on Whitaker Island has just as deep and dark of secrets as Hansen and Tessa.

The romance of Tessa and Hansen seems a little forced at times, and I just didn't feel the chemistry.

The island of misfits and lots of secrets. Tessa has arrived on Whitaker Island fleeing a scandal with her birth dad and soon meets newcomer, Hansen Rye the handyman. He also has arrived with many secrets. There is a murder on the island, Judson, whom Hansen knows from his past. Hansen and Tessa will join forces to try and solve this murder, before Hansen is accused of the murder. They can not deny the sexual chemistry between them, hot!!

I must say the beginning was a little slow and getting to know the cast of misfits, but once I got into the story I could not put it down. There is plenty of mystery of who done it, had me guessing until the end. Great sexual chemistry between Tessa and Hansen. I would love more from this island, it seems everyone has a secret in their back round.

I've been sitting on this one for a while, but as of right now, I have no interest in picking it back up. I'm a few chapters in and the story-line is very confusing, I'm not exactly sure what is going on. There are multiple threads of mystery that are not holding my interest, and I don't find any of the characters likable right now.

Don’t let the hottie on the cover fool you – as he tries to do to every single person on Whitaker Island. Her Other Secret is definitely romantic suspense, and that hottie has plenty to hide.

As does our heroine – as well as every single other resident of this tiny island off the coast of Washington State. But only some of those secrets are deadly.

While everyone on Whitaker is running away from something, it’s hottie Hansen Rye’s secrets that have come to get him – not that he knows that – at least at first.

Tessa Jenkins has been watching a yacht parked in the water opposite her tiny cottage for more than 24 hours, and she’s had enough. Something has to be wrong. The marina has plenty of space – and its on the other side of the island.

There are no lights on the boat – and no movement. It’s interesting that Tessa doesn’t think it’s her own secrets that have come to get her, but then, the person looking for her is generally a whole lot splashier than anything happening on that boat – which seems to be nothing at all.

Tessa is currently on the outs with the island’s only cop, so when she can’t stand the suspense any longer, she calls the person that everyone on Whitaker calls when they need something done. She calls Hansen, the resident handyman – and Tessa’s secret crush.

Not that Hansen isn’t the secret crush of every woman on the island – single or not – and probably some of the men as well. He’s gorgeous. A complete grump to the point of being an antisocial asshole, but gorgeous.

And generally useful. He fixes everything that’s broken, so Tessa is sure that he can fix whatever must be wrong with that silent, parked boat. That it’s a good excuse to call him is just icing on the cake.

That’s when things go pear-shaped. As Hansen and Tessa argue about going out to the boat, a man walks out of the water, fully dressed in a business suit, and heads inland – right past them. It’s weird. Really, really weird – especially when the man disappears.

It gets weirder still when the man turns up dead on Tessa’s front yard the next day. And all of Hansen’s secrets come out. And Tessa’s comes to the island to get her.

Escape Rating B: This is one of those stories that can best be described as “oddly charming”. I liked it, I enjoyed reading it, but it doesn’t hold up to a whole lot of scrutiny. It’s what I call “mind candy”. A good reading time that does not require deep thought that I probably won’t remember this time next year. But fun while I on Whitaker Island with Hansen and Tessa. It’s a beach read, ironically (or not) set mostly on a beach!

The setup of Whitaker Island, both the way it works and the people who inhabit it, was interesting. All 200 or so residents merely rent their cottages – there’s a mysterious owner behind the scenes who actually owns everything. There’s no government – just a governing board. One firefighter and one cop – both employees of that mysterious owner. Who remains mysterious throughout the book. I kept expecting him, her or it to be revealed, but they were not. (There’s a second book in this series, The Secret She Keeps, coming out in December. Maybe all will be revealed then.)

Whitaker seems to be a place where people escape from the rat race but bring all the rats with them – including their own ratty selves. Everyone has something to hide, and everyone gossips like it’s going out of season – which of course it never does.

I liked both Hansen and Tessa, as well as the way they got together, but I think that their respective secrets were both a bit over-the-top, contributing to the whole “fun while it lasted” vibe of the story.

While not giving those secrets away, it felt like Tessa’s secret just wasn’t nearly as big or as bad as she made it out to be. And the “ripped from the headlines” reasons for that secret didn’t quite gel.

Hansen’s secrets, on the other hand, were so big and so bad and ended up being so convoluted that they ended up in “bwahaha” villain territory. And I did figure out whodunnit way before our protagonists and wondered why they didn’t feel the clue-by-four whizzing over their heads.

But then, the epic storms cutting off the island and isolating the villagers may have had something to do with their distraction – not to mention their on-its-way-to-resolution sexual and emotional tension.

They were busy!

In the end, a good reading time was had by all. Her Other Secret feels like it would be a great beach read – at least as long as a corpse doesn’t turn up on your stretch of beach!

REVIEW: 4.25 stars--HER OTHER SECRET by HelenKay Dimon is a contemporary, adult story of romantic suspense focusing on manual and twenty-six year old, guide creator Tessa Jenkins, and handyman Hansen Rye.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Tessa and Hansen) HER OTHER SECRET follows in the wake of a murder on Whitaker Island. The residents of Whitaker Island all have secrets: from political scandals to murders, blackmail to affairs, Whitaker Island is the island of misfit toys. When a well-dressed man mysteriously walks out of the water, only to be found murdered the very next day, all suspicions fall onto our leading hero when he reveals his connection to the people involved. From a badly beaten woman to the murder of the town’s most likable old man, Whitaker Island’s secrets are about to be revealed. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Tessa and Hansen, and the fall-out as our couple find themselves on the receiving end of more attention and accusations than they could have imagined.

Like most of the residents, Hansen Rye moved to Whitaker Island to get away from his past, a past that has now drawn the attention of law enforcement and the political elite. Tessa Jenkins knows what it is like to keep her own dark and dangerous secrets but with the continuing drama, our couple’s individual pasts are about to be exposed.

The relationship between Tessa and Hansen is one of immediate attraction but neither one is in a place for romance or love. When the local ‘law enforcement’ has eyes for our heroine, Hansen steps up to claim Tessa as his own. As one another’s alibis for the on-going investigation, our couple find themselves the target of island gossip, innuendo and talk. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including many local island residents. We are introduced to the island’s lawman, thirty-four year old, former military MP Ben Clifford; council member and island ‘queen’ Ruthie Totttenridge, and her son Doug; lodge owner Sylvia Sussex; vacationers and busy bodies Ellis and Arianna Wells; old man Cliff; brother/sister duo Allen Bernard and Kerrie Ross; as well as Tessa’s father senator Charles Michaelson. I am hoping the author has plans for future stories involving the island residents.

HER OTHER SECRET is a story of power, betrayal, greed and murder; a story of secrets and lies; of romance and love. The premise is entertaining and intriguing; the romance is steamy and hot; the characters are eclectic, charismatic and energetic. HER OTHER SECRET is a thrilling and edgy ride into the world of romantic suspense.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This is a fun and exciting story and a great summer beach read. A murder on an isolated island must be solved before there are more victims. Together, Tessa and Hansen help the island’s only policeman wade through island gossip, conflicting stories, and dark secrets to find the killer.

On an island where no one is what they seem and everyone seems to have a secret past, it is difficult for readers to know characters well enough to relate to them or like them. Tessa is a likeable character but like most island residents, her background is a mystery. Similarly, Hansen is attractive, but we don’t get to know him until quite a ways into the story.

So, I won’t. I will say that the story moves quickly, and I had to work to keep up with Tessa and Hayden’s investigation. It’s a story where even the main characters feel like potential suspects and I loved that I couldn’t be certain about anyone. However, a few of the surprises are predictable and I guessed some of the characters’ secrets far too quickly.

One of my least favourite things about romantic suspense is the implausible sex – this time in the middle of a murder investigation during a storm bad enough to isolate the island completely from the mainland. I get that this is a necessary part of the hybrid genre but it feels a bit odd, as does the insta-love between two completely secretive, guarded characters.

I felt like I started reading in the middle of the story and the beginning was filled in over the course of the book.

Apparently Whitaker Island is a little like the island of misfit toys. People come to Whitaker Island to be hide from the world that has roughed them up and left them beaten. They come to hide from people or secrets, sometimes both.

We discover after the death of a former friend/acquaintance of Hansen, the reasons for his move to Whitaker. As the book progresses, we also find out Tessa's reasons for hiding. And, it seems, that most people who live on Whitaker Island have just as deep and dark of secrets as Hansen and Tessa.

The romance of Tessa and Hansen seems a little forced at times, and I just didn't feel the chemistry.

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books, on 7/14/19.

In her Acknowledgements, Ms. Dimon describes the setting of her new series as "Jessica Fletcher's Cabot Cove with more sex, more killing, and a lot of dysfunction" and I have to say, after reading book 1--that's pretty accurate! Quaint small-town life (this time set on an island) with all kinds of quirky characters and mysteries--plenty of mysteries. Which is where we start with this one--the mystery of why a guy in a full suit would walk out of the water and onto the beach, disappearing into the forest beyond, all without acknowledging the couple standing on that same beach watching him. It takes a looooooong time before we find out the answer to that one. Honestly, I didn't have a clue what was going on for quite some time here--for the most part, I figured it out along with the characters, which kept me turning the pages.

I loved the banter between Hansen and Tessa--it was definitely one of my favorite parts of the book. Her calling him out on his grumpiness never failed to make me smile, and of course was a big part of what drew him to her. I did spend a lot of the book feeling like I was catching up on things, though, which was disconcerting at times--Tessa and Hansen had already started falling for each other before the book began (her dragging him out to see the mysterious yacht was clearly just an excuse to get him out alone, not that I blame her at all--check out the cover!) and we don't find out their reasons for hiding out on the island (which is apparently a thing on Whitaker, where everyone's got a secret) until we're pretty far into the story. It was disconcerting at times, but like the mystery, kept me turning the pages.

Ultimately I liked this one and am looking forward to seeing how Hansen's brother Connor is going to find his way to the island (not to mention, I am dying to figure out what's up with the mysterious Maddie) in the second book. ( The Secret She Keeps: A Novel )

A sassy, smart, sexy, and suspenseful story, as much filled with danger and twists as it is with sarcastic humor and adorable ardent romance.
Her Other Secret is just perfectly entertaining, fun, and engaging. It kept me on my toes throughout the tale, the cast of characters just a hoot, with their secrets, information they want to hide and are willing to go to the distance to keep the information hidden on an island that spreads gossip faster than light.
Tessa Jenkins is a heroine easy to like and admire and Hansen Rye is the perfect mate to her, a partner, companion, and lover. The spark between them is like a fourth of July fireworks, they just get each other in a lever few does. I loved the way they were equal, both protective, both willing to go to battle for the other and do anything to keep the other safe. Their pillow talk was endearing, and them together just adorable and lovely.
The suspense is breathtaking. The murder mysteries and how everything is tight to everything else, and how the past secrets and the protagonist's history all play into the crimes committed on the small island, kept the guessing game going on until the very last part of the story where everything unrattled and comes to life and death matter in a whole new way.
I love the cheeky dialog, the clever, and the utterly sarcastic, biting way the author uses words to paint the picture, the mood, and the characteristics of the protagonists. This story pulled me in from the very start and kept me lured into the twists of the tale until wee hours of the morning and the end was at the hand.
Unputdownable, addictive storytelling that charm and allure, leaving the reader enamored and anticipating for more. Loved it. Absolutely loved it!

Her Other Secret by Helenkay Dimon is dashed with humor, danger, and enough heat. The pages fly by quickly. There is enough action and unpredictability to keep readers, like me, me engaged. One woman spots an unusual thing that leads to witnessing a man in a suit falling into the water. That same mysterious man then hides away from Tessa and Hansen. Sensing that Tessa won't give up on the search of the man and the probability of her getting into danger, leaves Hansen worried. Taking up as her bodyguard, he knows things will get worse. Both her life and their relationship are in danger as well.

I liked how Tessa is a go getter. She is brave and determined to catch the mysterious person. However, she must also be aware of the consequences it will cause.  Both the local deputy and Hansen are keeping a watch on her. Just maybe the danger isn't as a bad as they think.

Hansen is a cool collected guy until Tessa is being harassed by a teenage boy, or by putting herself in the line of harm. Hansen has his hands full where Tessa is concerned. Only he denies the attraction . But with his reactions, the attraction on his part is obvious.

IF you love your romantic suspense to be a humorous, highly entertaining with a small town vibe and still manages to grab you with the whodunit plot, then Her Other Secret is the book for you!
In Whitaker Island, where everyone of your friendly but nosy neighbor harbors a secret, Hansen Rye's past collides with the present when a dead body is found. Said body also happens to be the same guy that Tessa Jenkins saw coming out from the sea, suit and all! So when these two start investigating mainly to save Hansen from being framed, they never envisioned that Tessa's own secrets will come to light. Her Other Secret can be really serious and all dark and mysterious because of the plot BUT it is not, much to my delight! For one, Tessa and Hansen really carried the books with all their bantering and page turning encounters. These two carries sexual tension balanced with humor really well. Add in quirky and mysterious secondary characters as well and you definitely have a winner.
I am anticipating the next book in the series because Whitaker Island is definitely going to be addicting.

This is an exciting, mysterious, intriguing, and surprising book. I was quickly drawn into the story snd couldn't put the book down. The story has twists and the characters are so well defined you can see them. And then there are the sexy scenes that don't disappoint.

Hansen id s grouch that works as the island's handyman. He is so ho that all the women on the island want him even with his sour outlook on life. He is just a little nit crazy about one woman on the island, Tessa, but he knows that would only cause him trouble and he already has plenty of that. Tessa calls him because there's a boat docked not far from her place and there's no lights or signs of life coming from it and she wants him to check it out.

Tessa is a specialized technical writer do when things don't make sense she's on it and the yacht doesn't make sense. She doesn't understand what's going on. When Hansen comes to check it out they see s man in s suit swim to shore from the yacht and walk into the woods she feels like Hansen should find out what's going on.

This was my first book by HelenKay Dimon and I'll definitely be checking out her other books!

I wouldn't really call this a romantic suspense (there are some elements of romance but it's not the central theme) more mystery/thriller, yet I still enjoyed it immensely and it was a departure from my normal reads which was refreshing.

Whitaker Island is off the coast of Washington where people go to escape their everyday life.
Hansen and Tessa have a friendship but are fighting it becoming more. Hansen is taking a break to pull himself together after the death of his sister and Tessa is trying to stay away from family drama. The characters are likable and enjoyable to read about. At times I got a little lost in what was going on - but that just may have been me LOL. There is plenty of mysterious things happening that keeps everyone on their toes.

If you're looking for a good thriller then Her Other Secret will be right up your alley.

In Her Other Secret, both Tessa and Hansen find a dead body on their island. Now, their secrets and time of solitude is about to be disrupted. Everyone on Whitaker Island has a secret. For some reason, I kept starting and stopping this book. It's a shame it took me so long because once I finally got past the second chapter, I ended up finishing it in one sitting.

Not only is this a great mystery, it's a really steamy romance. I loved Tessa and Hansen. Their banter was really fun. Hansen was adorable with his awkward way of flirting. Once they finally got together, things turned really hot. I also loved the friendship between Hansen and Sam, the sherrif on the island. Aside from the fun romance, I did enjoy the mystery part. One of the twists I did see coming. But there was another one that I didn't call.

This is the first book I have read by this author. The next book in this series, The Secret She Keeps, comes out in December. I'm looking forward to reading it.

HelenKay Dimon kicked off her new Whitaker Island series with a sexy suspense that’s got a hot dude in glasses on the cover, HER OTHER SECRET. Glasses! I cracked open this book with a smile that quickly dropped once I got into the story. Dimon always crafts an exciting suspense but manages to do it without always relying on the heroes being super soldiers, mercenaries or law enforcement. By the time the story begins, Tessa Jenkins and Hansen Rye have already developed a friendship (albeit an adversarial one) and are circling their attraction, so it’s no surprise when they actually get together. Their chemistry is hot, and it’s good they have each other once murder victims begin to show up on their isolated island. The book may allude to her other secret, but Hansen’s got secrets out the wazoo.

It’s like a grown up version of Nancy Drew!

Her Other Secret blends HelenKay Dimon’s trademark banter, hot sex, and suspense with a quirky cast of characters on a secluded island full of secrets.

Hansen and Tessa are both hiding our from real life while also trying to fight off their attraction for one another but just as Tessa decides to make her move people start dying and secrets start spilling out. The twists and turns and movements of “I know who did it!” reminded me so much of my Nancy Drew obsession but with a lot more grown up language and did I mention the hot sex?!

I’m very intrigued by Whitaker Island and hope we get to go back soon to find out what is the deal with Ben and Maddie???
