5 - "Good thing I like you dirty..." Stars!
Jennifer Dawson starts her new Bastard series with a dirty talking, dirty minded hero you are going to absolutely adore. I personally don’t think that Jackson was much of a bastard, especially as the book and his relationship with Gwen progressed, you start to see him as more of a protector that guards his privacy by being all gruff and growly.
"I don’t feel about you the way I feel about other women…"
Gwen blows into town looking for one thing, but by the time she leaves, she actually wants something completely different. I loved this couple, but if you are looking for romantic fluff Cold Hearted Bastard definitely doesn’t fall into that bracket, but if you are looking for a book chock for of cock and a decent story line that runs alongside the sexual Olympics this pair get up to then I cannot recommend it more.
"You’ve had me tied me tied up in knots since the second I saw you."
Loved the dual POV, and the end left me smiling. Look forward to reading more from this series and this author in general.

Cold-Hearted Bastard by Jennifer Dawson turned out better than I expected. This was my first foray into her world, and it will not be my last. It was a wonderful story. I loved every moment spent in Jackson and Gwen’s world.
Jackson was a famous chef, but he walked away from it all, his reasons unknown to the world. Gwen is a chef and a restauranteur and she needed Jackson to come work for her and she came with all the ammunition she thought she needed to convince him to return to the world he had abandoned. However, she never counted on the sparks that ignited between them.
Jackson is a one-night stand guy. A charmer and had women falling all over him. No intention of accepting Gwen’s offer. His only interest is to bed her and get her out of his system. Easier said than done.
Some may consider Jackson to be a jerk, but I loved him. Never once did he hide his true nature. He was brutally honest with the women who he slept with, so they know what to expect. Not his fault if they broke the rules. Jackson was a complex character. There was a lot more to him than just being a man whore as the story unfolded readers learn the reason, he doesn’t allow himself to get attached.
I loved Gwen who was determined, smart, beautiful, funny and the perfect match for Jackson. It wasn’t difficult to see why Jackson fell so hard for her, despite him fighting his feelings and pushing her away every chance he got.
I was elated to see Jackson grovelling to win Gwen’s heart. I understood why he behaved the way he did, but Gwen did not deserve to be treated that way. Besides, he needed to pull his head out of his ass and cease getting in the way of his own happiness.
The secondary characters added their special flavour to the story. I am curious to learn what drives them and can’t wait to read their stories.
There was lots of sex, but it did not overshadow the story. I loved how the author struck the perfect balance. Note of warning, their relationship developed rather quickly and in no time, they were burning up the sheets and more. Despite the insta love, I enjoyed how their romance unfolded.
The ending had me smiling and tearing up at the same time. I had a fun time watching Jackson trying to win Gwen over with romantic gestures. What made appealing was the fact this did not come naturally to him, but the fact he was willing to do it scored major points in my book.
Conclusion/Recommendation

This is a start to a new series with the heroine who is from the Undone series (of which I have them and hadn't read any yet)
Wellllll, Jackson was an arse, a major arse, but him and Gwen sure did set off some serious fireworks, all over the place. I sure didn't figure out Jackson's reason for leaving Chicago. I loved seeing all her friends help him win the girl after his MAJOR a$$hole move.
Guess I'm going to go read the original series now.

YOU GUYS!! I have been a fan of Jennifer Dawson for a long time and Cold-Hearted Bastard is THE BEST book she has written to date!! That is saying a lot since I have enjoyed and cheered all of them! But holy crap this book was everything I love in a novel. A mean, moody, broody alpha-hole? Check! A sassy, take charge woman who WILL bring a man to his needs? Double Check! Gwen and Jackson were absolutely magnificent. Their banter was fire but their chemistry was seriously combustible. This book was fiery and addicting and so emotional! I read it in one sitting and never wanted it to end!!

GAH!! Firstly, right off the bat you need to pick up this title just by the author's trusted name alone. Jennifer Dawson's books are absolutely incredible. But secondly, people you seriously have no idea what kind of chemistry you're gonna get when you start this book! This was probably hands down one of the hottest books I've read. It was filled with scorching sexual tension, banter, and sexytimes. Lord does this man know what he's doing. But not to be outdone, the emotional aspect of this book took me by surprise. This is legit the angstiest book this author has written as I felt my eyes water right for Gwen and Jackson's pain, sadness and regret. This was so phenomenally written and I was consumed with every word!
All in all, this was another fantastic Dawson book to get lost in. And a delightful bonus? Fans of this author's Undone series will love the cameos from familiar faces and appreciate the return of Jillian Santora, Gwen's sassy spitfire of a bestfriend. I can't wait for the next book in this delightful new series! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

I got hooked on Jennifer Dawson's book through Crave, and read all of her Undone series quickly followed by Love and Other Disasters. In a genre chock-full of quick, throw-away read-and-forget books that scratch an itch, or let you relax without being mentally taxing, she stands out for writing stories that stay with you. Cold Hearted Bastard continues this trend. I have trouble saying that it's her best book to date, but only because I am so firmly attached to the characters she brought to life in the Undone series. I have no compunction however with calling Cold Hearted Bastard to be smack on the same level. Her heroes and heroines are all strong, complex, and flawed. Most importantly, they resonate with you even if their life circumstances are miles away from your own.
First of all, I'm delighted to see Gwen step forward and claim her own story after being in the background of the Undone series. I love seeing the reverse of the friendship between her and Jillian. As for Jackson, he really is a guy you love to hate. He makes you grind your teeth together. And Jennifer manages to perfectly pitch the tension of the novel that you spend a large portion of the book wondering what secret he's hiding without ever tipping over that line of frustration of "oh enough already, just tell us the big damn secret". And when it does come, it really takes your breath away. I had all sorts of theories but I wasn't prepared for what actually happened. The story instantly took on an additional poignant element, breaking new ground that the Undone series didn't touch.
One of the strong aspects of character exploration in this story is of course Jackson's character and how it was shaped by his childhood and how that continues to drive his persona and his choices. Anything more than this would be a spoiler but this to me was one of the strongest pillars of the story and has much to do with the big twist.
Beyond the big reveal, Jennifer also finds the perfect balance of tension in the relationship between Jackson and Gwen, throwing obstacles and stubborness in their way without becoming absurd. Eventually when Jackson makes his decision to pursue Gwen, she does not capitulate easily and I liked that. I liked that she felt the need to protect herself. It added that extra element of realism to the relationship which faced significant real-life problems that couples often struggle to overcome.
Finally, I have to tip my hat to Jennifer for managing to so elegantly write a book where cooking turns into a sexual metaphor. Before Jackson and Gwen give in to their chemistry, they cook for each other, and before they manage to do anything more than make out, you feel like they've exchanged the most intimate parts of themselves through their food. It has the potential to be so corny but Jennifer makes it a delicate and vulnerable act. Almost as any artist sharing their creation with another person whose opinion means more to them than they would like to admit - she makes the Jackson's sandwich for Gwen take on so much more meaning than just a nice gesture.
I had very high expectations for this book, and I'm delighted to say they were fully met. I can't wait to read more. The secondary characters are intriguing in their own right and I look forward to hearing their stories. Beau in particular, I believe, deserves his own much-delayed, happy ending. The plot is not over-contrived, and as will all of Jennifer's books, the character development is what drives the story, not sex. Don't get me wrong, the chemistry in the book is scorching and explosive, but it's like... a garnish to a perfectly balanced plate. Not the main feature. Hahaha see what I did there? Culinary puns.

This a book that I picked up and couldn’t put down. The storyline kept me engaged wanting to know what happened next. It ticked all the boxes!
I really don’t want to include any spoilers so I am just going to say what I got out of the story. It was about taking chances and accepting reality. Finding love and fighting for it. The importance of family and friends and finally it was about love in many different forms.
This is definitely a book that I will read again and for me it it was a 5/5 book.

Jennifer Dawson has done it again! She's created another 5-Star read that I absolutely love! She has a way of creating characters that I just fall in love with. I felt like I became part of Gwen and Jackson - like I was experiencing everything they were. From the very beginning of the book, I could see them ending up together (even though it's a romance and you kind of already guess that they will get their HEA). The situations they found themselves in just seemed so them and they just seemed to connect and be at peace in each other's presence. The sex is hot and the food descriptions are mouth-watering. If you've read anything by Jennifer, you won't want to miss this book! If you've not read Jennifer's book, this is a great place to start. You can go back afterward and catch up with all her other works of art.

This was soooooo good until the story reaches day five and then bang! The heroine admitted she's falling for our brooding hero. Like nooooo! Why would you add this instant love bullshit into the mixed and ruin a perfectly fine story?!
The banter, sexy ass chemistry, oozing tension that could be cut with a knife and the overall direction the story was going was perfect until we hit that mark. It was so disappointing because I was hoping for built-up, more heart to heart conversations and as much I hate to say it, I was let down by how quickly their feelings developed.
Now I know I sound absurd but I have never been a fan of instant love romances and am immediately turned off when I come across it in any book, popular or not. This unfavorable trope can easily make or break a novel, hinder reading experience and general thoughts on the characters and their relationships for me
Nonetheless, after that instant love shit hit the fan, it just felt like I was just going through the motions. I was no longer invested in Jackson and Gwen's story and the secret out hero was hiding but would still recommend this novel because if you ignore that particular trope that makes me stir crazy, it has all the elements that make a good romance contemporary read.

He may be a Cold Hearted Bastard, but Jackson McKay is a red hot lover! The chemistry between him and Gwen Johnson is just jaw-dropping, jealousy-inducing hormones in overdrive. Seriously. So much heat.
They couldn’t even look at each other without wanting to rip each other’s clothes off, for crying out loud. I spent the first half of the book wondering if they could stop long enough to form a conversation.
But then the twist in the tale happened, and oh my goodness, I didn’t see it coming. The reason that Jackson wouldn’t allow feelings to interfere with the chemistry; the reason he kept his emotions shut off. And my heart broke a little for him.
Once that side of him cracked a little, it was a revelation. Watching him come to terms with his emotions, still trying to deny them right to the end, was fascinating to read, and so well done. The whole relationship between Jackson and Gwen became real, but not perfect.
I really, really enjoyed this book. I cheered for the Happy Ever After because it was so thoroughly deserved after all the struggles.

He makes the rules. She's about to break them all. Dawson makes a cold heart a temptation not to be missed. Jackson and Gwen are a match made in fire. He knows how to keep his cards close and she thrives at keeping him on his toes. It's a fight to the finish and the culmination is explosive.

Cold Hearted Bastard
is a romance novel written by Jennifer Dawson. It is the first book in the Bastards Series. The story follows Gwen and Jackson. They are both celebrities in the culinary world. Gwen is a chef and the owner of one of the best restaurants in Chicago. And Jackson, he is a genius, a chef of world renown. However, six years ago, Jackson went off the grid. No one knows why he's disappeared. A few restauranteurs have sought him out throughout the years, but he had turned down all offers to come back and cook for them. Gwen has a plan. She's confident she can convince him to come work for her. Little does she know that meeting Jackson will change her life forever.
This is my first time reading about chefs, so that's new. However, many tropes are still here. One is even „hinted“ in the title. I didn't mind the tropes all that much since the plot wasn't as formulaic as in some of the previous books I've read.
I think the characters were fine. I actually really enjoyed Gwen, which is a bit surprising since I often find female protagonists annoying. But, Gwen was fine! I liked how ambitious, strong-minded and intelligent she was. And, I think most importantly, I liked that she fought back. She didn't let Jackson give her shit and manipulate her all the time. Which is rare in romance novels! However, I must be really self-destructive, but at the end of the book, I almost wished Jackson and Gwen wouldn't get back together. I was bitter the whole time he was trying to get her back and really rooted for her when she rejected him. The grand gesture was incredibly cringy... I know, I know, it was supposed to be, and he planed it that way... but why? I was so annoyed with the two final chapters!
A bit of a spoiler... but, I didn't like it when she decided to move in with him leaving her friends and family. She left everyone she loved, the city she loved, the restaurant... for what? A man who she in actuality couldn't know if he was going to snap again and push her away? Gross. I get that she loves him and all that, but is that risk worth taking? Are there no less drastic ways to start that relationship? They know each other for barely three weeks!!! Gross. I am so disappointed. I don't completely blame the author for this unrealistic behaviour since there are in reality stupid people who act like this but come on... I could actually vomit. If one of many family members or friends tried to pull something like that off I would literally try to punch some sense into them.
Gwen has worked for years to build her life and career just to meet some bloody hillbilly bastard and throw it all away? Even after he acted as an absolute dickhead to her? The writing. It was enjoyable. Not the best I've read, but it wasn't boring or tiresome to read. I was entertained and hooked throughout the whole book. Well, at least until the main conflict escalated. The writing itself didn't get worse then, my annoyance was caused by the reasoned mentioned in the last few paragraphs.

This is my first time reading about chefs, so that's new. However, many tropes are still here. One is even „hinted“ in the title. I didn't mind the tropes all that much since the plot wasn't as formulaic as in some of the previous books I've read.
I think the characters were fine. I actually really enjoyed Gwen, which is a bit surprising since I often find female protagonists annoying. But, Gwen was fine! I liked how ambitious, strong-minded and intelligent she was. And, I think most importantly, I liked that she fought back. She didn't let Jackson give her shit and manipulate her all the time. Which is rare in romance novels! However, I must be really self-destructive, but at the end of the book, I almost wished Jackson and Gwen wouldn't get back together. I was bitter the whole time he was trying to get her back and really rooted for her when she rejected him. The grand gesture was incredibly cringy... I know, I know, it was supposed to be, and he planed it that way... but why? I was so annoyed with the two final chapters!
A bit of a spoiler... but, I didn't like it when she decided to move in with him leaving her friends and family. She left everyone she loved, the city she loved, the restaurant... for what? A man who she in actuality couldn't know if he was going to snap again and push her away? Gross. I get that she loves him and all that, but is that risk worth taking? Are there no less drastic ways to start that relationship? They know each other for barely three weeks!!! Gross. I am so disappointed. I don't completely blame the author for this unrealistic behaviour since there are in reality stupid people who act like this but come on... I could actually vomit. If one of many family members or friends tried to pull something like that off I would literally try to punch some sense into them.

Jackson is an in demand former chef who returned home because it was something he had to do. Many restaurant owners and high powered food industry personnel have come to Louisiana to try and lure him to the big city restaurants. He is a self proclaimed man whore who lets each conquest know exactly where he stands beforehand, to give them a chance to decline the encounter. He can’t be involved right now, he has more important things in his life to focus on. But when a tall redhead walks into his bar he feels the connection instantly. He knows she will be the one to break him.
Gwen is used to getting what she wants, when she wants it. And right now she wants Jackson to be the head chef at a new restaurant she wants to open. When she sees him in person though she realizes all the photos she’s seen haven’t done him justice. Their eyes lock across the bar and she feels it through her entire body. This isn’t going to end well.
Jackson and Gwen realize a few things; they have amazing chemistry, they want more than one night, and neither is going to change their minds about her proposition. Gwen knows that Jackson won’t leave his hometown but she doesn’t know why. They decide to make the most of their 2 weeks and that’s it for their relationship. Gwen falls fast though going against her better judgment and decides to leave early. Jackson’s family steps in as they’ve never seen Jackson so affected by a woman. 1st read I've read of Jennifer's ... holy hotness (chemistry here and back, and back again!!) a very steamy hot read. love the cover. Are redheads always so brave and bold? bad news, i wonder?? i would think they are just has bad or evil and other colors of hair do ladies?? depends on the person and how they are in their lives, right??! I enjoy Jennifer's writing style. Just the way she does describe situations : such as : "Whiskey-colored eyes, high cheekbones, full lips, and dirty blond hair." It just gives u the best visuals, like u r watching it all happen in real life happening right in front of you. so cool!! Even when certain words are used "womanizer" (Britney Spears??! it is just plain scary when google corrects your English ... apparently i spelled Brittany wrong??! who knew??! that is so freaky!! google u r too in my mind or my fingertips on the computer??!) not like the author meant to ...but i get a certain song in my mind... bet that will happen with you too?!? Great ending. Love these characters, the banter ... look forward to book 2 and even more from this series. Must read ... great writing. well written. loved it ... need more from this series asap! please.

Gwen finally gets her HEA!
Unfortunately this one didn't quite work for me. I love a good "bastard" hero but he has to have redeeming qualities for me to believe in the romance. Jackson didn't quite redeem himself in my eyes; I didn't enjoy his push-and-pulling and how he treated Gwen. Even though I liked his grovelling, it was too late for me to change how I feel about him, and in the end I was left with the feeling that Gwen deserved better.

- The sexy times A+++
- Crave gang cameos! I MISS THIS BUNCH. Gonna go reread their books.

November 3, 2019This writer was another friend recommedation. You'd think I'd learn. Said 'friend' is no doubt yukking it up at my expense right about now - because there is no way she would have said, "You should check out so-and-so" unless she was taking the piss.
I DNF'ed at the 3rd chapter. These two were disgusting. The only things that set them apart from 2 swine rutting in the mud were the abilities to walk upright and to speak with words.
Although, come to think of it, they didn't do much of that, either. Grunting, moaning and sucking sounds don't actually count as words in the English language.
First, we have the 'hero' telling us he's so awesome and skilled he can have any. woman. he. wants - but they can't have him. He just shags them and then bails in the night whilst they sleep! He doesn't even wait till morning.
Coward much?
But no, according to auld Mr Pump-n-Dump, women only get the one and done because they all think they are going to be the One To Change Him.
And we can't have that.
This male narrative is one reason why I HATE dual POV. I'm supposed to think this guy - who only sees women as good for one thing - is a hot, swoon-worthy hero and root for him and the heroine?
Um...no.
It gets worse as the reader is then treated to the internal dialogue of the heroine as she explicitly outlines how she 'abused' her body embarrassingly as she masturbated over and over all night. The writer also very thoughtfully included descriptions of the h's slickness and how she smelled like she was in heat 🤮🤮.
WTF??
Sounds more like a hygiene issue to me, and pretty goddamned repulsive to boot.
Come on! This crass filth is what passes for romance now?
Sorry, but no.
And that doesn't make me a prude. It simply means that my standards soar over that of an animal or a f*cking she-primate with swamp crotch.
And mind you, these oh-so-romantic incidents occur BEFORE the pair even. exchanged. names 🙄.
I estimate this book is probably 85% f*cking, 10% foreplay and 5% resting between.
All sex, no substance and unlikable one-dimensional characters nobody can relate to. I think the book title should be changed to The Spunktrumpet and The Misogynist.
Much more apt.
People do not behave like this. Chemistry or attraction doesn't work like this. And if a woman is able to masturbate to orgasm 10 TIMES IN A NIGHT and then start again in the morning, then she needs to see a doctor, pronto.
A.) because she has a brain tumour that is causing her to over-produce sex hormones or B.) she has some outlandish form of OCD.
OR - C.) she is a shifter that becomes one of those wee creatures that multiply in droves, like a rabbit.
I like stories that emphasise the emotional and intellectual interaction of a couple. Intimacy is fine - on the back burner. An occasional treat scattered throughout.
There was nothing intellectual or emotional here - unless violent repulsion with nausea counts as an emotion.
Nah, this book was just porn, and I need not bother myself with this writer ever again.

You ever just know when you start a book that you are going to love it? Like in the first couple pages, it has you right away? Well, I knew Cold Hearted Bastard had me in the first few lines! And, I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.
Jennifer Dawson has a new series called the Bastard Series. Cold Hearted Bastard starts the series with a BANG. The chemistry between Jackson McKay and Gwen Johnson smolders from their first meeting. He is gorgeous; some say genetically blessed. Once hailed as one of the culinary masters of the generation, he was constantly photographed with beautiful women. She is stunning; the restaurant darling of the Chicago scene.

This book appears to be just about a strong willed woman and man who want each other sexually and are expected to combust when they come together, but the more you read, the story about a man and woman who intend to use each other, becomes so much more. Each character has so much more depth and layers than you expect and knocks you off your feet. It is like traveling down a tunnel with many twists and turns and you never know what to expect when you get out. jennifer Dawson succeeds in making you feel deeply for these characters and hungry for more.

I’m always up for the snark.The way the plot unfolded was so quickly, Jackson and Gwen relationship is more based on sex and I just couldn't connect with characters.

This book had me tingling all over, in a good way! Sexual tension and attraction explodes right from the start. I love how Jackson and Gwen are both strong, determined people, which makes them fighting their attraction all that much hotter. Under all the steamy, hot, scenes is a beautiful, fierce love story. I would definitely recommend reading. I have loved all of Jennifer's books that I have read.

Jennifer Dawson writes compelling anti-heroes, and I fell hard for her latest one in Cold Hearted Bastard. He’s a world-renowned chef, who is sexy, gruff, moody and sometimes a jerk. He suddenly fled his glamorous lifestyle and the public eye in order to return to his small Louisiana hometown, and no one knows why. She’s a brilliant restaurateur and chef from Chicago, who wants to convince him to work for her. They both believe that they’ll be the victor in this showdown but neither can control their smoking hot attraction. Make sure to have a fan close, because you will need it while reading this enemies-to-lovers romance.

This book was great! At first it seemed the typical romance, but as you get into it, we see a shift that makes it different. At first Jackson makes it very hard to like him, but we eventually see why he was so resistant to relationships and it is so easy to understand where he is coming from. Gwen is great. She is strong, determined, and very self aware. I loved her confidence. This twist itself had a twist which made the story that much better. I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Delicious food, delicious chemistry and delicious hot scenes, this book packs a hot punch from the very beginning and never lets go. Jackson’s broodiness and cockiness matched against Gwen’s persistence and sass makes for an outstanding book. The sensual build up will leave you panting (much like Jackson and Gwen) for more! The characters are dynamic and as the story unfolds you understand how they came to their idiosyncrasies and you love them even more. As per the usual, Ms. Dawson absolutely knocks it out of the park.
I basically started this book and did not put it down until it was done and then I was sad that it was over. The dynamic between Gwen and Jackson (and then his family) is everything great and leaves you wanting more.

This is a love story full of obstacles and obstinate people and a twist that is very unusual but very compelling and sweet. Make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand as you may well find yourself crying, I know I did more than once sometimes because it is sad and sometimes because it is so lovely; and I guarantee that at the end you will be feeling aaahh! A beautiful love story with hints of humour, full of passion and eroticism and well worth reading.

He tells them in advance but they rarely listen. They think that makes him a bastard and maybe it does but it also makes him honest.
It's not a book about the south without a meddling family. His is great and if my family is any indication, very true to life. They scheme and when nothing else will do, they push the issue. It leads to a lot of fun, but they also hold the key to the mystery.
Gwen Johnson is a Chicago chef, restauranteur, and happens to be bored silly. She wants a new challenge, something that causes her to jump out of bed in the morning. Her life is too routine. She decides that she needs a new restaurant. In opening her new venture she has researched chefs and wants Jackson. She won't take no for an answer, so she tracks him down with the full support of her best friend, Jillian. She is always there, providing comfort, laughter, and a boot in the ass when necessary.
The push/pull was delicious agony. It was highlighted and showcased expertly. Neither were willing to give an inch and it leads to angry words, hurt feelings and a big blow up complete with a slamming door. Never fear though, there is an HEA worthy of the book.
I have to confess something before we go any further. I read Mrs. Dawson's books because I love her style. They're filled with conflict and drama and plenty of steam. And that's great! But the real reason I read her books is because she makes me laugh like a lunatic that's just escaped the asylum. I did it again with this book. The car scene just outside the bar, their blunt conversations, the dinner closer to the end of the book...I laughed so hard I'm sure my neighbors thought a hyena was roaming loose in the neighborhood.
I did find a few instances of words in the wrong places or skipped altogether but they were minor. For instance, leaving a the out or mixing up the order of words like saying, "Door open the please.". Minor and easily understood. This is a new book and these things are common. I don't deduct points for that in new releases.
Otherwise, this is a technically flawless book with two perfectly flawed people, steamy sex galore, and so many funny exchanges, I laughed until I cried and ached.
Can I recommend this book? Omg, yes! It was heartbreaking, hilarious, and hard to put down. I read it in one sitting and enjoyed myself so much I was upset it ended.

The push/pull was delicious agony. It was highlighted and showcased expertly. Neither were willing to give an inch and it leads to angry words, hurt feelings and a big blow up complete with a slamming door. Never fear though, there is an HEA worthy of the book.
I have to confess something before we go any further. I read Mrs. Dawson's books because I love her style. They're filled with conflict and drama and plenty of steam. And that's great! But the real reason I read her books is because she makes me laugh like a lunatic that's just escaped the asylum. I did it again with this book. The car scene just outside the bar, their blunt conversations, the dinner closer to the end of the book...I laughed so hard I'm sure my neighbors thought a hyena was roaming loose in the neighborhood.
I did find a few instances of words in the wrong places or skipped altogether but they were minor. For instance, leaving a the out or mixing up the order of words like saying, "Door open the please.". Minor and easily understood. This is a new book and these things are common. I don't deduct points for that in new releases.
Otherwise, this is a technically flawless book with two perfectly flawed people, steamy sex galore, and so many funny exchanges, I laughed until I cried and ached.
Can I recommend this book? Omg, yes! It was heartbreaking, hilarious, and hard to put down. I read it in one sitting and enjoyed myself so much I was upset it ended.

Cold Hearted Bastard is the first book in the Bastard Series by Jennifer Dawson. Meet Jackson McKay. There's only one thing you need to know about me. I'm a cold hearted bastard that will never love you the way you deserve. And I'm sorry to say, bastard beats nice guy, every time. I never lie. Never deceive. I lay out exactly what will happen. My only promise is that I'm a one-night stand. That this is will be our first and last time together. Then I stand back and let them walk. But they never do. Because they all want to believe they will be the one to change me. And, Gwen Johnson, the woman that will be his demise. There's only one thing you need to know about me. What I want, I get. End of story. I didn't come to own one of the best restaurants in the city of Chicago before the age of thirty by taking no for an answer. And what I want is for this cold hearted bastard, and culinary genius, to work for me. I don't care how difficult he is. I'm going to figure out what makes him tick, what he needs most, and then I'm going to go in for the kill. The way I see it, you either own it, or it owns you.
Cold Hearted Bastard is a contemporary romance that focuses on two successful adults that know what they want, and will not be sidetracked- at least not until they see each other. Everything has always come easy come easy for Jackson, and when he retreated to his hometown he still received offers to come work his magic for them. Gwen has worked hard and gotten to the point where most things come easy for her as well. When the two mean there are fireworks, verbally and physically. I like that they are honest with each other about the attraction and what they can offer each other, well for the most part. There was plenty of heat, but I like that they talked and did other things as they got to know each other. Jackson's big secret, as well as the fears and insecurities the two have, are well done and I was curious to see how they would come together. I really liked how honest they were with each other about how they felt, except for when they weren't because of the conflicts. There were moments that I wanted to kick one or both of them but while I disagreed with then or thought they were missing the big picture, the reactions in question were always in line with the character. I also liked the variety of secondary characters, some of which fans of the author will recognize from previous books.

If you are looking for a hot read with two determined main characters, then this book is for you.
Jackson McKay's culinary skills are beyond amazing. He was on his way to being one of the best chef's in the nation, until he fell in love with his new daughter. Moving back home was a no-brainer, knowing that his family would provide a ton of support and love. Jackson is a very private person and sharing his life with someone is something he has no desire to pursue. He has become a love 'em and leave 'em type guy, and always ensures his "dates" that he is unavailable for anything more than one hot night of sexual passion. Then Gwen Johnson pops into his workplace, and all bets are off.
Gwen is a successful chef and restaurateur in Chicago. She wants Jackson for her latest culinary endeavor, and will do whatever it takes to employ him. Gwen always gets what she wants and Jackson is it. Little did she know that he would become much more than a conquest.
