Plague Unleashed By D.C. Gomez In this book a plague is unleashed and Death knows who to blame, her sister Pestilence! Borrowing Pestilence's rookie Intern, Eugene, they all try to figure out how the zombie virus is being passed about and how to stop it.
Great news people! Isis and the gang are back! This time instead of witches, Texarkana is about to have a zombie issue. Constantine is not happy, so be sure to avoid using the “z-word” in front of him. Things are about to get rowdy and not in a good way. However, if you’ve read the first book then you will be thrilled to know that the gang is back, and the humor? The humor is on point all the way. So brace yourself for a basketful of shenanigans…oh, and don’t eat the pies. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. LOL!
Plague Unleashed is the second book in Death’s Intern series, and Isis is facing new drama. You get that sense the minute you see this book’s cover. Seriously, you have Isis swinging a machete and she just has this look on her face that says she has zero fucks left to give. LOL! Shit has hit the fan, and the zombies are incoming. Good thing she has a great team having her back, because this is not going to be an easy thing to deal with. Unleash the chaos and dive into the fun!
D.C. Gomez is back with another entertaining addition to the series, and this book is a must-read. Whether you have read the previous book or not, this book is sure to captivate your attention and keep you coming back for more. Readers who haven’t read the previous book will find that they can read book two as a standalone. Granted, it’s more fun if you’ve read book one, but it’s not absolutely necessary. Isis gives readers a brief breakdown and overview of who she is, who Death is, and how she came to hold the job as Death’s Intern.
Quickly the story shifts into what is currently going on. Brace yourself for some laughs. No, seriously. Imagine a person who died while running, and they didn’t realize they were dead, so their spirit? Yeah, it just keeps on going for a run. The whole situation that plays out is beyond hilarious. Poor Isis gets Army flashbacks and everything. Though I doubt the Army had geese. Did we pique your interest? LOL! Keep reading…or go grab the book and dive in. LOL!
Of course, this is just one piece of the drama puzzle that is about to be Isis’s life. Cue something weird going on in the park after the soul’s eventual collection. Honestly, it’s not every day that you see some random guy grab a living squirrel and take a bite out of it. Yikes! Seriously dude! WTF! Was he really that hungry??
It’s easy to write off that one situation as a one-and-done, but when more incidents begin to crop up around town…well, it’s time to call it what it is… a zombie apocalypse. Interestingly enough Constantine is against the z-word because it could mean big trouble. We know what you’re thinking…NECROMANCERS!! Sadly, no. LOL! Apparently, they like living. Not THE living, but just living themselves. LOL! You’ll understand when you read the story for yourself. So, who does that leave? Constantine’s least favorite person…Pestilence. YES! The introduction of a new horseman! Score! So, why does Constantine despise her so much? Trust us on this one…it won’t take long to figure out why.
Seriously, when she says, “Fine. I’m sure it has a plan for you.” In reference to Constantine, our jaw was on the floor. It?! She referred to Constantine as an it!?! If you’re not gasping in horror we just don’t know what to do with you. It’s honestly more of a surprise this particular character doesn’t have more “disgruntled” former employees.
While chaos begins to envelop Texarkana Isis is dealing with her own personal chaos. While the chaos threatening Texarkana is dangerous, the chaos threatening Isis is downright hilarious. Her friends constantly are telling her to be careful. It’s sweet until you realize that they are basically saying that she’s a magnet for trouble. How is half the stuff that happens her fault?! But things just get downright funny when the guys decide that Isis needs to get out and date more. Excuse us…what now? LOL!
If you are snacking while reading this book, carefully put the snacks/drinks away before you get to Isis’s date. We don’t want you to laugh so hard you choke. The one-liners are coming and one in particular had us howling. Isis does learn a good lesson though – never go on a date set up by the guys. They are THE worst “matchmakers” ever. Period.
The bad guy in this book is someone you are absolutely going to love to hate. Granted, you’ll cut her a micrometer of slack when you learn about her “struggle”, but that’s about it. A micro meter and not a micro more. Because seriously, who decides…”I’m going to prove that I’m the best by killing a bunch of people”? Okay… never mind… obviously someone who worked for Pestilence. But you know it’s on when she shoots up Constantine’s car. His response to that incident… absolute gold. But it won’t be long before you’re saying, “Okay, the accountant has GOT to go!”
The cast of characters in this book truly brings it to life. You get the regular gang from book one – Isis, Bartholomew, Constantine, Death, Bob, and Abuelita. But you get some newbies, too. They are familiar to the main cast of characters, but for us readers, we’ll be getting a better idea of who they are. One particular character who is going to stand out is Shorty. Shorty is hilarious! He makes a great addition to the cast and proves himself to be absolutely indispensable.
Author Gomez brings Plague Unleashed to life with a lot of flare, humor, and drama. For readers who are fans of paranormal novels with a healthy dose of humor and page-turning drama this book is not one to be missed. This book will keep you coming back for more, and leave you eager for the next book in the series. Odds are that before this book is finished, you’re going to be counting yourself a fan of Gomez’s books.
Pros: Excellent humor Great cast of characters Unexpected twists Page-turner
Cons: None of note
Lesson of the book: Be prepared for anything and everything, because someone’s rejected “intern” could be out there plotting mass destruction.
‘Death’s job is simple: she delivers souls to their final destination’ – Unexpected fun!
Dominican born Texas author D.C. Gomez studied film and television at New York University, served in the US Army, and now enjoys her best-seller status as an author. Her books may be about dark themes, but her infectious humor makes them thoroughly enjoyable. Her short stories have appeared in collections – CUPID WORE DOGTAGS, FIESTA NIGHTS, TIS THE SEASON – and her novels are in series – CHARLIE’S FABLES, THE CAT LADY, ANOTHER WORLD, THE DARE COLLECTION, THE ORDER’S ASSASSIN, THE ELISHA & ELIJA CHRONICLES, and THE INTERN DIARIES, of which PLAGUE UNLEASHED is the second volume.
Gomez tilts attention instantly as she opens this novel – ‘According to some studies, people have more heart attacks and strokes on Mondays than any other day of the week. It seems that the Monday-morning blues are truly dangerous to your health. I agreed with that sentiment, at least today. I usually didn’t have much to complain about in my job. It wasn’t like I needed to punch a clock Monday through Friday, or as if I lived in a cubicle world. I had a unique position: I was Death’s Intern for North America. I might need to explain that a bit, since that sounds like I am an assassin or mercenary of some kind. We, myself and the other interns, are not allowed to kill…’ Rumination alert!
The provided summary hints at the plot; ‘Isis Black has survived eight months as Death’s Intern. But not even all her training could prepared her for the madness of zombies running loose in Texarkana. “I swear, I didn’t do it. It wasn’t me. I did not start the zombie-apocalypse in Texarkana. But I’m planning to find out who did it, before the whole city is taken over by those mindless souls. Too bad the one person that might have the answer is the one being Constantine despises above all else, Death’s Sister, Pestilence. How can one person be so absolutely despicable? Why does she need ten interns all calling her Mistress? She is evil. Pestilence swears she didn’t cause the Plague. I’m blaming her anyway. Now all I need is more time and less five-year-olds trying to eat their teachers’ faces. Scratch that, what I really need is a new job.”
The author continues her investigation of the concept of Death and the interaction between life endings and soul capturing in this ongoing series. She provides a stage for a cast of inimitable characters, both super-natural and strange-natural, whose interactions provide one fine-tuned rollicking tale - the initial adventure of a series that now numbers six volumes! For those who love humorous paranormal fiction, this is a series to explore! Recommended.
✨Plague Unleashed (The Intern Diaries Book 2) byD. C. Gomez✨
My ratings - 5/5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
📚The Fascinating characters that you need to find out about and a plot with a lot of space for development convey the story. Paranormal story with characters that are composed with such style that you end up made up for lost time in their every day lives as though you were watching a show on television
📚Characters from her past novel again go to her guide. The creator's positive and hopeful viewpoint is noticeable in the improvement of these characters into great and beneficial individuals. That is by all accounts the mystery of her composition. Amidst a zombie end of the world, the characters draw strength from adoration and steadfastness to one another. That kindness win over evil is never in question. These are not broken individuals, they are acceptable individuals who discover goodness amidst hardship.
📚Her unbelievable creative mind gives us a cast of incredible characters, every better time than the last. We follow Isis in a constant battle to save the city from the retribution of a disdained representative of Pestilence, Death's sister. Isis follows bogus leads as the circumstance becomes progressively frantic. At last, the peak comes as 10,000 individuals, potential zombies casualties, swarm into town for the yearly College Bowl. Among the numerous apparatuses available to her, Isis utilizes a goliath moving robot to get the circumstance leveled out.
📚This is a decent perused and I strongly suggest it.
This novel's unique blend of humor and supernatural mythos was on point. The author did an incredible job of world-building in this narrative, with the small town of Texarkana not only bringing a more intimate setting to the larger-than-life narrative but also becoming quite vast in nature when the grand scale of this storyline comes to fruition.
Yet for me personally, it was the combination of rich character dynamics and deep-rooted mythos that the author crafted that made this story so brilliant. The inclusion of other powerful entities besides Death being expanded upon in this narrative and the inclusion and teases of other supernatural creatures and mythologies made the cohesive nature of the story feel pretty epic. All the while, the author brought some heart and humor to the situation with the cast of characters, for whom they found love and friendship amongst one another that kept them together and fueled their mission to help those affected by these supernatural threats.
The Verdict
Action-packed, captivating, and entertaining, author D.C. Gomez’s “Plague Unleashed” is a must-read paranormal and humorous fantasy novel and a great second novel in The Intern Diaries series! The breathtaking imagery and tension the author layers into the narrative enshrines the mind-blowing mythology the author builds upon from the first book and leaves readers eager for the third book in the series.
As a Texarkana resident, I will never look at the town the same way again. Despite the rather grim sounding title, this is a fun, upbeat tale. Gomez again has Texarkana invaded by supernatural forces. This time, she is joined by the intern from another of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. And this time the threat is zombies, not witches. Characters from her previous novel again come to her aid. The author’s positive and optimistic outlook is visible in the development of these characters into good and productive people. That seems to be the secret of her writing. In the midst of a zombie apocalypse, the characters draw strength from love and loyalty to each other. That good will triumph over evil is never in doubt. These are not broken people, they are good people who find goodness in the midst of tribulation. Her incredible imagination gives us a cast of outrageous characters, each more fun than the last. We follow Isis in a non-stop fight to save the city from the vengeance of a scorned employee of Pestilence, Death’s sister. Isis follows false leads as the situation grows increasingly desperate. Eventually, the climax comes as 10,000 people, potential zombies victims, swarm into town for the annual College Bowl. Among the many tools at her disposal, Isis uses a giant dancing robot to get the situation under control. This is a good read and I highly recommend it.
This book is the second in the series (3rd if you count the novella and I do!) These books just keep getting better! I absolutely love and adore the characters this author has come up with. You have Isis Black that is Death’s intern. She helps souls to there final place with compassion…. And tons of humor! Constantine is a 5000 yr old talking cat that is the boss of this lovable group. (Friend and the original employee of Death) He is sassy and no nonsense… teddy bear on the inside… deep down lol Bob is the Reaper’s cook, mechanic, driver, strong arm, lovable Jack of all trades with connections guy. He was a former homeless veteran that Isis saves in the first book. Bart is a 12 yr old boy genius and Death is his guardian. Isis treats him like a little brother. Bart is super sweet… cares about everyone…. And knows how to get you anything you need. These three Are Surround be other characters that compliment them and make a huge different kind of family. With this book expect action, humor (sometimes dark and twisty lol), family bonding, oh and did I mention they are fighting a zombie apocalypse in this installment! This book has a little bit of everything! It’s also suitable for most all ages I’d say. No cussing, spice, or graphic violence. Just good fun and adventure.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Plague Unleashed. I did not read the first book in the series but did not feel I missed anything by picking up with book 2. As I am sure book 1 did, book 2 does a great job of bringing to life a mix of folklore and different cultural beliefs about spiritual things in a way that makes it all believable. I love how DC Gomez has made Death an entity that works from a place of caring and those working for her are compassionate people. With customers like The Devil himself, Death needed non-judgmental types to deliver souls. Her ragtag crew meets the mark. Isis is a badass and doesn't know, which makes her lovable and relatable. I look forward to seeing her grow even more into the gifts being Death's Intern has bestowed on her. Her new little family is such a wonderful hodgepodge of misfits that you want to know more about. For the record, I wouldn't mind having a cat like Constantine. Looking forward to book 3! NOTE: The author did provide me with a copy of this book to provide an unbiased review.
This is the 3rd book that I’ve read by the author and consider me a fan. Her signature humor, attention to the detail of her characters, and her stories just make me happy.
This is the second in The Intern Diaries, and Isis still has not read her manual! Granted, she’s been working non-stop since taking on the position of Death’s Intern, but this girl needs some serious downtime. This story starts about eight months into her position as the intern, and Isis, Bartholomew (boy genius), Constantine (talking mob boss cat), and even Bob (security expert) have returned for more “fun” in Texarkana, TX. Maybe fun isn’t the right word since Zombies have descended on the city, and Death isn’t going to be happy if she hears that. All that said, Isis is going to figure this new crisis out using her moxie and her newly acquired talents, thanks to being associated with Death, and save her town if it kills her. And it just might.
I really love this series, and Plague Unleashed reminded me exactly why. Isis has quickly become one of my favorite characters—she’s smart, sarcastic, and somehow always manages to hold it together even when things are completely falling apart. Watching her deal with a zombie outbreak in her own hometown made the stakes feel so much higher, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages.
I especially liked the way humor was woven into all the chaos—it kept the story from getting too heavy and made the action even more fun. The mystery with Pestilence kept me guessing, and I enjoyed seeing how the supernatural family drama unfolded.
While this book wasn’t flawless, it was still such a fun ride. Every time I finish one of these, I’m reminded how much I enjoy this world and can’t wait to dive back in.
OMG…LOVE this series! It is hilarious! In book two people are turning into zombies! Isis and her cohorts have to discover the reasons why. Isis is her usual Klutzy self. She attracts trouble everywhere she goes. She cannot even go on a cheesy date without him turning into a zombie~ Pestilence makes an appearance in this book. Eugene is introduced in this book as well! Isis and the gang are after someone who is making people into zombies and they do not know how it is happening. They go through the paces in this one to find out~ Discover how they work around Pestilence’s rules, how they work together to stop those infected and how they hope to capture who is responsible. You will not want to miss this latest installment but be prepared to laugh your way through the book!
Texarcana is in a zombie apocalypse. What is causing it?? How can Isis and her family, Constantine, Bartholomew, Bob, Shorty, and Eugene, backed up by Eric and Death, put an end to this. Bart is building a robot to enter in the College Bowl competition. It will be a great help, but how?? Shorty is becoming a valuable asset as the clean up crew. Eugene is on loan from Death's sister, Pestilence. He is a great chemist. Constantine is as good as only a century's old car can be. Bob has taken on cooking for the family as well as being Isis's sidekick. He's great at gluten free cooking. Eric is still their hand to hand combat trainer among other things. Hail, hail the gangs all here. A delightful book. Highly recommended.
Book 2 in The Intern Diaries definitely keeps the love for this series growing. I absolutely adore Isis, Bob, Bart and Constantine and the way they work together.
Pestilence is a welcome additon to the insane train and the fact that she is woman power and all her interns are men is fantastic. It adds great friction between her and Death and the whole zombie plague.
Speaking of... ZOMBIES!! Yes, this totally had me at zombies 😂😂 Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with me and my love for the Cray Cray. Maybe I would make a good intern for Death? 🤔🤔🤔
This author's humor is on point with how I am and I absolutely love the laughs between the gruesome. Can't steal my heart better than this 😂😂 I will read whatever D.C. Gomez sends out in the world.
Another wild and fun fantasy ride! I loved all the found family themes! I would like to see more women in the fam tho! I hope there is more Eric × Isis to come! This book also seemed like a tourist pamphlet for Texarkana!
12/9/23 I got to meet the author she was so kind, and she signed my book!

In this second book of D. C. Gomez's Intern Diaries, Isis Black and the gang have a zombie plague to overcome.
We get introduced to Death's sister, Pestilence, who's crew of all male scientist, create the world's ills. I enjoyed the obvious rivalry between the two of them.
I love the way Gomez writes dialog! It's worth saying in this review as well. The flow and clever banter is very entertaining.
This could be a stand alone book but personally, I could not just walk away from these characters. (Starting the third book next!)
I recommend this to people who enjoy urban fantasy and also for someone that just needs a great distraction from real life.
Now that she’s sort of getting the hang of being Death’s intern, Isis is exhausted but mostly happy. She’s finally found a place where she belongs and she has a purpose. Her job isn’t always easy, though. Especially not when she starts seeing… zombies around town? Now she has to prevent a zombie apocalypse and possibly even worse: meet Pestilence, Death’s sister.
I’m a little bit obsessed with this series. I love everything about it. The moody teenager, the talking cat, the homeless allies, Death, Pestilence, and Jake. What’s not to like?
I live near TEXARKANA, so it was awesome to read about how a zombie apocalypse could shake down in the area. Gomez uses real life in a way that makes her stories seem like they really could happen. #2 was every bit as entertaining as the first and I am looking forward to what the next has to offer: maybe a trip both of the river to Broken Bow for a Bigfoot adventure?
Loving this series. I just loved the conversation between Isis and Eugene after Isis went on the blind date from hell.
“Eugene was inspecting William very closely. “What happened to his face? That bruise looks fresh.” “I slammed his head on the table,” I replied almost to myself. Unfortunately they all heard it, and they were staring at me.”
Still laughing at this, how many blind dates end with one person turning into a Zombie.

This is a great read It's good because you don't have to have read The first book, Death's Intern to follow the story all thought it does help to see the characters in the first book so you can get a better grip on the world the author wrote as well as adding a fuller picture to all the main crew at Reaper Inc
I just cannot get enough of Isis and the gang. DC Gomez has captured some of the most intriguing characteristics of living in Texarkana, Texas and Arkansas. It amazes me how the author infuses this fun series with some of the more quirky characters. The details really help me as a local to feel like I am in the story witnessing it even if it is fantasy.
A very fun and entertaining book. Had many humorous parts, which is a plus for me. Love zombie books, and am very pleased with how this book was written. Thought all the characters were well thought out, and I was able to enjoy the book from the first chapter to the last.
I loved this smart, funny, thoroughly entertaining story about Death's newest intern and the whole team working in Texarcana. There's loads of action when a zombie virus gets loose in the city and the team has to track it down and stop it or lose the souls they're supposed to reap. A great read.
What can I say but another great novel. Death's intern, Isis, is one of the coolest women on the planet or in any universe. I love the mix of humor and the interplay between Death and Pestilence. Please read the series and you'll grow to love it too. Enjoy!
I rated it a five because Amazon rating system doesn't allow for a higher rating, great story with heart interesting characters, to me everything in the story connects without a bunch of fluff great job D. C.
Better then the first book, but it’s still a simplistic Jim Butcher style story. The main character, Isis Black, does more in this story but still really doesn’t do a lot.
This is the second book in this series of books by this author. If just joined this series there are Five books and too short stories in this series also and this is has the four horsemen of the Armageddon.
I really liked this book. The main character is strong and continues to find her confidence. She evolves throughout the book and begins to realize her worth and importance of her time in Death's community.
I would like to thank DC Gomez and Goodreads for my copy of Plague Unleashed. I loved it so much. Very light hearted with nice clean humor. Loved the story , can't wait to read the rest!
Death’s Intern vs Zombie apocalypse? Who will win? Our wonderful band of misfits are back for another hilarious adventure with Death’s sister unwilling helping out. Can’t wait for the next book!!!!
This is one of those series whe re I have to get the next one as soon as I finish one. I've loved these first two books and am looking forward to the others!
