Describe Jake Hopkins in two words? Boozing womanizer. So, maybe he solved cases with a precision not seen since Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. It didn't matter. The guy was a grade A prick. And killing him was the best decision I ever made—until it wasn't. It was supposed to be a good move for me—a way of showing that I wasn't one to back down. I never imagined it would cause such a visceral reaction...among my readers. I didn't get it. He was barely tolerable most of the time and his death opened the door for a new detective—maybe one who had her act together. I never would've guessed that he'd show up on my doorstep, begging for a second chance, or that he'd look even better than I ever imagined. Characters die and everyone moves on—that's the way it works. Sometimes it's even necessary for the story to progress. When the hate mail gives way to something more sinister, Jake insists that he's just the man to handle the case. He vows to keep me safe in exchange for his life. The problem isn't resurrecting him. No, my problem is much worse. How do I stop myself from falling in love with a fictional character?

Shannon is a born and raised Texan. She grew up inventing clever stories, usually to get herself out of trouble. Her mother was not amused. In junior high, she began writing fractured fairy tales from the villain's point of view and that was the moment she knew that she was going to use her powers for evil instead of good.

In 2003, she moved to Denver and met the love of her life. After some relentless stalking and a few well-timed sarcastic remarks, the man eventually gave in to her charms and wifed her so hard. They welcomed a son in 2007 that they named after their favorite Marvel superhero, Spiderman.

Sick of seeing beautiful mountains through their window every day, the three escaped back to the desolate landscape of the west Texas desert in 2009. She welcomed her second son not long after and soon realized that being surrounded by three men was nothing at all like she'd imagined in her fantasies.

After an unplanned surgery in 2014 and a long pity party, she decided to pen a novel about the worst thing that could happen to a person in order to cheer herself up. She's twisted like that. Thus, From This Day Forward was born and the rest, as they say, is history.

Not only does Shannon enjoy stalking people, she also has a fondness for being stalked. Visit her at www.shannonshaemyers.com to keep up with her latest schemes and shenanigans.

I honestly don't know where to start with this book. It was certainly a mixed bag. When I read the blurb, I was super excited because it sounded unique and original (and it got an extra star just for that reason). And the idea itself IS very unconventional; unfortunately, the execution fell short for me.

I think I'll break it down into positives and negatives...

POSITIVES
-- Original idea.
-- The writing was quite good.
-- There was some laugh out loud moments.
-- I loved Hayden (most of the time).
-- No OW or OM drama.
-- Fun secondary characters.

NEGATIVES
-- The plot was ALL over the place.
-- The pace was very slow moving and the book too long.
-- No logical explanation for book characters coming to life!! I get I was supposed to suspend my disbelief, but I figured we would get some sort of logical reason that explained why several book characters just became real breathing people...but nope. *shrug*
-- Up until 85% Jake was an immature douche. I just never warmed up to him.
-- The ending felt rushed and a bit too "out there" and "over the top" for me.

So yea, as you can see a complete mixed bag. A fantastic original idea let down in the execution.

Ok I love the idea that all my book boyfriends are all out there somewhere in the world. This was such an original romance. I know there are a few movies with this concept but this is the first book I’ve read with this trope. Throw in a couple mysteries to unravel and I was hooked from page one. I love the writing style and the humor (I think I had a grin on my face for most of the book.) One of the main things that had me reading as fast as I could was the ever present question of how would they be getting a HEA. He’s a book character that she killed off and he’s somehow knocking on her door and demanding to be brought back. But if he gets his way and is put back into the story then he’ll be gone as soon as she figures out how to resurrect him. Right? Not to mention he’s a fictional character so she know she should definitely not be lookin for more with him even if he has more layers to him then she knew about. I don’t know what else to say except why haven’t I read this author sooner? Such a fun Rom-Com

I have never read anything like this before. Myers delivers something new and unique. I was beyond intrigued after reading the blurb and once I started reading, I was extremely impressed with how easily I was swept up into the story.

Initially, I wasn’t sure how things were going to work, but they just did. It all just made sense and I was easily able to suspend belief. The story was fun, exciting, and pretty sexy too. I enjoyed the characters immensely. I loved their banter and their attraction. The mystery also gave the story a different dimension, as well as the whole overall feel of adventure when you throw in a fictional character who’s come to life!

If you’re looking for something different give this one a try. This was my first book from Myers and I absolutely loved it. I’m excited to see that it is the start to a series. I will definitely be on the lookout for future releases. Luckily, it looks like she has quite a few books out already so I have plenty to read while I’m waiting.

Protagonized by Shannon Myers is a KNOCKOUT of a read! It a read that kept me entertained to the very end.

This book was hilarious. Like laugh-your-socks-off funny. I was laughing with tears falling from my eyes, and after reading such heavily-themed novels, this was just the pick-me-up I needed.

I loved the idea of this novel so much! It was so original! When I'd read the novel, I just had to give it a try, and I don't regret it at all. I'd never come across a novel like this before, and I loved it's originality. it was phenomenal.

Protagonized was also a touching read. It had bits of everything: Drama, tension, humour and sweetness. All of this was blended with the perfect balance, and I fell in love with it.

I'm also in love with the characters. Hayden and Jake were perfect, and I absolutely loved them together.

Protagonized is the perfect rom-com that will cheer you up instantly. It had a little bit of everything, and is hilarious! Worthy of more than five stars. Absolutely perfect.

Don't we all read to escape from real life into a fantasy world?

Don't we fall in love with some of these characters sometimes?

But what happens when one or more of these characters come and join you in the real world?

Whoops, right? WTH?!!

Well, to be honest, that's the most interesting blurb I have read lately but I really wonder how the writer is gonna pull it off...

******************************

Updates:

There are more books in the series, and as far as I have learnt, although this doesn't end in a cliffhanger, one needs to read the following books to get all the answers because there is not a good explanation of how it happens in Book 1.

I will wait for more reviews before I dive in, no matter how interesting the idea is.

Ms. Myers has done it again. She stated going in that this was something very different for her, and it is, but in the best kinds of ways!

This is a hilarious love/hate exploration of what it's like to be a writer, make a decision to kill off a character and face the interesting consequences when that character comes to life wanting to be written back in! Jake and Hayden are quite the match, in wits and snark and chemistry. There's something really special about the fun you can have when reality and fiction intersect.

As someone who also writes, the idea that you don't actually know everything about the characters you've created is interesting and terrifying - and who has wondered where characters go after they are killed off?

Fast-paced entertainment with an element of slow-burn love-to-hate romance. Great side characters (Aaris and Bootsy are just the cat's pajamas and worthy of so much more than this little mention) and great drama with a dash of suspense.

You won't ever regret picking up a Shannon Myers novel! Just go get it!

Nothing could have prepared me for this laugh out loud masterpiece! I found myself laughing over all the witty banter, nodding in agreement at the totally relatable inner thoughts, and stressing over the ‘will they or won’t they’ the entire book!
Everyone reads to escape into a fantasy world, to be the characters they love. So what happens when those characters join you in the real world?
The answer is you love them even more!
I can’t say enough good things about this book! The author knows how to draw you in and keep you glued to your kindle!

I grabbed this book as soon as I read the blurb - it seemed very interesting and it just grabbed my notice.

And I enjoyed it. The hero once he appeared in "real life" seemed different to when he was a "fictional" character to me.

I really liked the heroine, I liked the hero, the story was original. It was an entertaining, funny lighthearted read.

But as a person who gets twitchy when timelines don't add up in books, or things are left unexplained, this book has driven me mad!

No explanation is given AT ALL to just how Jake appeared in real life, along with his car, and seemingly references and legal status given his ability to get a job.

So while I enjoyed it, liked the characters, Max being a firm favourite I am left scratching my head!!

Fanciful? Perhaps. Original plot? Certainly. Entertaining? Absolutely! Some may scoff at the premise of this story, but I found it to be quite clever and entertaining. Unless particular attention was paid throughout the entire story, much of the story’s nuances would be lost and/or overlooked...thereby leaving much confusion as to the plausibility of the ending.

I found the characters, in their infinitely quirky personalities, to be charming and often times endearing. The dialog was quick and sharp...and as mentioned above, if the minutiae of the author’s intentions for her characters were not paid strict attention to, the story could get away from you and leave you with what some reviewers described as “unsatisfied”, or “confused” with the ending...and the moments leading up to it. The banter was at its snarky best when Jake and Hayden were at odds over plot points...these were also at the same time, some of the most hilarious moments as well.

All in all, I’m looking forward to the continuation of the uniqueness of this series Jessa’s story.

I loved the unique concept behind this story - the idea of having characters pop out of stories and enter real life is both exciting and a little scary. Shannon Myers pulled off a subtle worldbuilding within this book, where the characters writers create have their own separate reality, and they can come and go as they please. I found it funny how she created a retirement home for killed off characters, which is full of George R. R. Martin protagonists and a whole lot of villains. So much creativity packed into this book!

The end is nigh for Detective Jake Hopkins, successful detective and womanizer. His creator, Hayden Michaels, has had enough writing about a character who disgusts her but her fans swoon over. She wants to write cozy mysteries, with zero sex and a strong female lead, so she kills off Jake at the end of her latest book. Problem is, this really makes her fans angry. And no one is more angry than Jake, who shows up on Hayden's doorstep with a pair of handcuffs and a demand for a better ending, preferably one where he lives. Hayden at first refuses, but as strange things start happening and Jake takes over as her protector, she realizes there might be more to her character than she thought. Sure, she created him...but what if everything she knew about him was a lie?

As I said before, I loved the premise of this book! The idea that characters come to life is what drew me to this book in an instant, and it kept my attention throughout the story. While I didn't feel much of a connection to Hayden, I really liked Jake Hopkins and over time I grew to like Hayden too. She was super quirky, and Jake helped keep her feet on the ground. And at the same time, Jake was super full of himself at first, and Hayden knocked him down a few pegs. They were pretty immature at times, and that was the only reason I wasn't entirely onboard with their relationship initially, but I saw how they complemented each other as they spent more time together. I was worried how the story would wrap up, since Jake was fictional, but it was a great happy ending.

Since this is the first in the series, I'm excited to see where Shannon Myers takes it from here. So many possibilities!

Protagonized by Shannon Myers is the story of Jake Hopkins and Hayden Michaels.
Hayden is a writer who's family doesn't believe in her and when she goes to kill of a popular charcter Jake Hopkins in her books, her fans are upset. Feeling somewhat out of sorts with all that is going on she is stunned to open her door to a man asking for her with her book in his had. It turns out he is claiming to be Jake Hopkins.
This is defiantly a different take on a romance but none the less it was one book that I enjoyed seeing how there story was going to play out. Totally enjoyed it.

Protagonized straddles the line of many genres: fantasy, comedy, romance, suspense. But the blurb is a little misleading. It seemed like a quirky fantasy mystery: an author kills off the detective in her books and suddenly he appears in real life at her door and helps saves her from danger. I thought it would be a lot more entertaining and funny but many times it fell into the ditzy, silly, eye-roll comedy instead. The story has no real direction with tropes from every genre popping up and then going away just as quickly.

The main character, Hayden, is the most annoying person and her personality traits keep changing. At 30% in we find she's an empath but this is the first time we even see a hint of it and it wasn't shown, but told. I didn't mind Detective Jack Hopkins so much; he had a few good scenes and lines, but not enough for me to forgive the main character's flaws.

The thing is, I think Myers can actually write, I just felt that this story missed it mark.

This is the first book I've read by Shannon Myers, and it did not disappoint. The characters are witty and funny. The story had a few twists and they played out really well.
Hayden Michael's is a writer, a cat lover, enter her cat Bootsy whom she spoils. She's worried about everyone else's feelings and will even fib to not hurt someone's feelings. Her family emotionally beat her down, her writing is not a real job, be more successful like your brother, etc. She's written around six or so books and five of them sold like crazy, the sixth One in a he Chamber, well not so much. She killed off her main character Detective Jake Hopkins in a “Jake Hopkins Mystery” so where does the series go from there? Her fans are not happy with her choice and the agent she was trying to get told her no due to her killing off the main character in the series. Career suicide.

Jake Hopkins was a fictional character in Hayden Michael's last three books, until Hayden had him pushed from a 30-story patio. Jake is now knocking on her door to get her to bring him back into his story.

Some things start to happen around Hayden, a brick thrown at her window, attempted poisoning via weed in a cup cake, which Jake ate even though it was meant for Hayden, someone is trying to scare Hayden into doing something and Jake is going to protect get until she gets him written back into his own story.

The attraction between Hayden and Jake is smoldering, it's a love hate kind of thing or more to the point they hate to love each other. Jake is having feelings for Hayden and Hayden is head over toes in love with Jake. And everyone loves Bootsy, Hayden's cat, who a friend of Jake's, Max introduced Bootsy to Bob Ross Painting Videos seems the cat has not been the same since, she's so calm now.

Can fiction and reality live together? It's worth getting a copy of this book to find out.

Not what I was expecting and not for me...I liked the premise of fictional characters coming to life but I didn’t relate will to Hayden or Jake or their interactions and pretty much didn’t get “it” at all. I mean, I could follow the story, kind of, but it was silly and all over the place and not very deep and… Anyway, I almost didn’t finish it but decided to skim to see what would happen and though there seems to be a HEA I am still having trouble figuring out how the plane of humans and fictional characters manages to intersect and interact...guess one has to suspend believe completely. I am sure there are some readers who love this book and believer there is a reader for every book...that said...I would like to thank NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

Ok, let me start off by saying this book was completely different and wholly original but it was also weirdly hypnotic. Crazy, mind-blowing and unique this book took me on a wild adventure that had me fascinated right from the blurb!

Shannon Myers took this book idea of stories and characters coming to life and turned it into something fascinating. The craziness of characters coming to life was a heck of a curve ball and was strangely cool and appealing to me. I liked how the story flowed and how almost..."out there" this book seemed. I found it really neat and enjoyed it. I liked that it was so completely different than the average story and the fact that I wasn't sure where the story would take me was refreshing. I can't wait to see what else is next!

Wow, Protagonized is completely different from what I was expecting.

I didn't knew Shannon Myers, neither researched before (which already proved to be a mistake several times), but, reading the blurb, I thought I'd like the book.

I started reading and realized the book was nothing like I was expecting. But wasn't bad either. On the contrary, the book is super cool. Protagonized is really crazy and made me happy.

Hayden and Jake are awesome. Their relationship is excellent.

Bootsy is a crazy lady. All books should have an animal.

Protagonized is a fun reading with great characters.

Thank you Shannon

Protagonized é bem doido e me deixou feliz.

A Hayden e o Jake são espetaculares. A relação deles é excelente.

A Bootsy é uma moça doida. Todos os livros deveriam ter um animal.

Protagonized é uma leitura divertida com ótimos personagens.

Obrigada, Shannon.

This book was such a delight to read. I was entertained from start to finish—it was practically impossible to put it down. My eyes are bleary as I am writing this but it was worth it.

I loved a lot of things about this book but I am only going to mention few things that I really liked.

Going into this book, I knew that Hayden was not going to be anyone’s cup of tea. She was too quirky, too different, too random and too much of everything! But these reasons were exactly why I fell in love with her. Even when she was way too ridiculous to be real, she somehow felt real. Her struggles were so relatable and at one point I had to stop and muttered to myself, “I felt that.”

I loved that the author magnified Hayden’s struggle with her height because I do not think that has ever been pushed in books. Yeah height is such a petty thing to be insecure over and people not taking you seriously because of your height is such a first world’s problem. But I think the author did a great job highlighting it without making it seems to be petty. There was this one scene that occurred in the book with the heroine, where a waitress poking fun of her height that was eerily similar to one of my experiences. I totally felt her pain then.

In terms of the book’s concept, I found it to be original and to be frank I went into this book without knowing what it was about, so when I got to the part where Detective Jake Hopkins was knocking at her door, I was completely floored. It was a complete mindfuck moment, that’s for sure.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a laugh and a good time.

5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review

This story was new, it was different, and it was refreshing. You must go into this book with an open mind. It’s not like anything I’ve read! I loved the plot and the thought that went into Protagonized. Shannon Myers was able to write a story that not only kept me entertained, but left me wanting more. I loved Hayden and Jake. I'm trying to writer this review without giving anything away. There is a major plot twist in this book and I want you to fall in love with the story as much as I did.

Hayden is an author, who's kind of stuck. She been successful, but now she needs help. Reviews for her last book are less than stellar and her words aren't flowing like she's used to. Jake is looking for redemption. Redemption that only Hayden can give to him. It was fun to watch these two fall into a "norm" for them. It was fun watching them explore. Most of all, it was fun to see Hayden become so much more.

I loved this story. I loved the idea behind it. At times parts were slightly far fetched, but then again what good is a story if it doesn't make you use your imagination. Please read with an open mind! Shannon's work only gets better with each book. I loved how she made me fall for Jake, even when I wanted to knock him upside the head at times. I loved falling in love with another one of her amazing characters. Please check out Protagonized.

Okay so I started this book because well I kept seeing it. When I first saw it I was skeptical because I just didn’t see how Jake coming to life was believable. But I kept seeing it on my various social media profiles and I struggled because I love Shannon’s other books. So I decided to give it a go. I wasn’t expecting to love it or read it in one day. However, I loved the story! The concept is so interesting.
Hayden kills off Jake not thinking fans would care and it causes a host of problems the largest one being Jake himself. He somehow entered into the real world and demands Hayden fix what she did to him. Over the course of her trying to return him to the story many things happen including love. I don’t want to get into it because I hate spoilers!

While Shannon never explained how Jake went from a fictional character to a living, breathing one out in the real world, the story was compelling. I felt the plot progressed and was cohesive. I also felt like Jake was a really cool character/idea. It just goes to show even if you imagine the character it doesn’t mean the author knows everything about them.

I just think this book was so cool and I look forward to seeing what the author will come up with next.

I was totally drawn to this book by the blurb, it’s a unique story line that I couldn’t resist.
The story follows Hayden, a writer who decides to kill off one of her more popular characters womaniser, detective Jake Hopkins. No one is happy with this turn of events, her fans are angry but Jake is livid but happens when he turns up on Hayden’s doorstep with handcuffs demanding she bring him back to life? When strange things start to happen to Hayden, Jake becomes her protector and vows to solve the mystery. Soon Hayden realised there’s more to the detective than she first thought and what happens when she catches feelings for him? You will have to read to find out!

The story was totally unique and kept my attention, Hayden was a bit quirky and at first hard to like but over the course of the book she grew on me. Jake, well he was a surprise, I wanted to hate him but he was actually quite growly and captivating! I did wonder how the author would bring the story together, but she did a wonderful job.

After reading the blurb on this one, I knew it was one I had to read. There was something refreshing about it that made it stand out in a crowd of hundreds of other new releases. But when you have high expectations of a read, you enter with a slight trepidation that it won't match your expectations. This one certainly didn't disappoint.

When author Hayden kills off her main character, she certainly doesn't expect him to turn up at her front door demanding she bring him back. Yep, slightly crazy and it is a concept that makes you doubt reality. However, what an amazing ride this was. Jake and Hayden spend most of their time seemingly fighting over the plot or whoever is out to scare Hayden but this all a facade to fight their attraction for each other.

This was such a quirky read with plenty of laugh out loud moments, tension and sexual heat between the characters. I loved the banter between all the characters.

4 1/2 Fictional Stars!

Hayden is a mystery writer who kills off the main character (Detective Jake Hopkins) in her newest series and the readers are angry ... but not as angry as the detective himself! When he knocks on Hayden's door and demands that she rewrites the book and NOT kill him off, Hayden is taken aback and thinks she's going crazy. But it doesn't take her long to fall for her own fictional character.

This book is so different! I thought ... it's gonna be so far fetched, how is this gonna work? But I was pleasantly surprised. This book had me laughing out loud and rooting for Hayden and Jake to get together. Hayden was just so cute and always tried to please everyone ... but herself. And Jake ... who wouldn't want him to be real? Talk about character's coming to life on the pages of a book!

Protagonized by Shannon Myers a five-star read you will make you come to life. This was one of my most anticipated reads of this year and I’m glad to say that it will be one of the best. The moment this one dropped on my kindle, I had to start, and I was so hooked I decided that sleep is for wimps. The whole premise of this book was one that I was so excited about, and it done so well. Hayden is someone who’s live you will get sucked into and at times she annoyed me, but I didn’t care I needed to get deeper into her story, I will even own up to the fact I adore Bootsy and I’m so much more a dog person than cat. Detective Jake Hopkins is a character that will make you scream and chuckle in the same moment. I can’t wait to read more from this series.

This book was so much fun and a very unusual story! If you are someone who needs for the story to be rooted in reality then this book is obviously not for you..I mean right from the blurb you can see Jake is a fictional character and Hayden is the writer who created him and killed him off!
I absolutely adored it!
Hayden is a bit out there lol but that's why I love her..she talks to herself and wear only cat shirts..oh man the things she dreams of.
Jake is an enigma..in the way that he might or might not be exactly as she created him.
I also loved that there is a story in the story..
Very interesting and entertaining!

This was my first read by this author and after reading I'll definitely be picking up more of her book. This book was nothing like I have read before and that is what makeshift so awesome. Hayden is an author of a hit detective novels star Jake but after a live hate relationship with her lead character she decides to kill him off and no one likes that very much. When her character Jake actually shows up in real life she thinks she's losing her mind. Now I'm not going to go into too much because this is something you just have to read. But these two together were a perfect match. The ending was amazing it tore me up but then it out me back together. It has a lot to love!

Now this is entertaining! Fictional character shows up on your door step?!
Hayden Michaels is a writer, who just recently killed off her main character. People are NOT happy. Including the real life Jake Hopkins.
She things he's imagining him showing up until her friend tells her she can see him.
Jake just wants Hayden to fix his stony and bring him back to life.
It's funny, adorable and very interesting take on if you brought you're book boyfriend to life. A definite page turner!

I liked that this was a different concept, however I didn't like it, I didnt like the characters and couldn't connect to them, and honestly I just could not connect with the book. I started and stopped and started again, and finally just couldn't do it..Sorry folks hate giving bad reviews or soso ones but it was not for me

I adore Shannon's books and this one wasn't an exception. It is funny, sweet and everything you could want from a book boyfriend. I loved Hayden and Jake, I loved the chemistry, the plot of him wanting his character brought back to life. Haven't we all wished at some point a book boyfriend that our favourite authors have killed off to not have died? This delivers all the goods. I cannot wait to see what comes next!
